It just hadn’t been a very good week. On Tuesday, Sam’s father lost his job. Then on Wednesday, Sam’s mother announced that the rent (房租) on their apartment was going up. Now it was Friday, and Sam received an invitation from Rosa to her birthday party.
Sam knew Rosa from Adventure Club. He knew he would enjoy Rosa’s party, but he didn’t want to go without a gift. What could he possibly buy her with the little bit of money he had? Sam knew he couldn’t ask Mom or Dad for any money—not this week!
Later that afternoon, Sam noticed a second-hand book sale going on. He went there and had a quick look. Two books caught his eye. The first was a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods, and the second was a book about woman explorers. “Rosa would like these,” Sam thought, “but would it be tacky (蹩脚的) to give her second-hand books for her birthday?”
Sam decided that a second-hand gift was better than no gift at all. Besides, Rosa supported recycling in that way. So, she would probably like it. With his last dollar, Sam bought the books and went home. He felt a little better.
The party was on Saturday. Rosa opened all her gifts and thanked everyone for the nice things they had given her. She paused when she opened Sam’s gift, which made him wonder if she liked the books, but nothing was said.
When Sam got home, he opened his e-mail and found this note from Rosa.Dear Sam,
Of all the gifts I received today, yours was the nicest. How did you know I would love a book about woman explorers and a cookbook of Puerto Rican foods? Now I have something to read that will inspire me to follow my dream of becoming an adventurer, and I have a book that I can share with my grandmother. She is getting older and wants to be sure her granddaughter knows how to make the wonderful foods of Puerto Rico. Thank you so much.
Love,
Rosa

A spoon of pickles (榨菜) can sometimes make a meal taste way better. Recently, a new type of pickle is being discussed: “digital pickled vegetables”. It stands for the videos people watch while eating that make their food more delicious.
______①______. The topic received more than 16 million clicks on Sina Weibo and about 100,000 people joined in the discussion. Instead of having a good time with friends and family during a meal, many young people in China keep their eyes on TV shows or short videos. Many believe that their food is tastier with the digital pickles.
______②______. Can this habit influence your diet? According to a research paper published in 2019, you may eat more without noticing it. The international research team asked 62 volunteers to follow different eating habits on four different days. The habits included eating while looking at the mobile phone, reading magazines and without distraction (干扰). After studying their diets, the team discovered that eating with a distraction increased caloric intake by about 15 percent.
______③______. To find out the reason, the team invited two groups of people: one group ate while listening to sounds about another person eating and the other listened to sounds that helped them imagine themselves eating. The results showed that the second group ate less since they paid more attention to their meals. When eating with the “digital pickles”, our attention can be distracted, which leads to eating more than expected.
______④______. A research project led by the University of Sussex, UK, pointed out that activities which need lots of attention trick many people into overeating. The team invited 120 people to do different tasks while providing them with drinks and snacks. “Our study shows that if you’re eating or drinking while your attention is distracted by a difficult task, it is less possible for you to tell how full you feel,” one of the researchers Martin Yeomans explained.

33.What can we know from Paragraph 3?

C.Different eating habits made little difference to people’s diet.

35.What is the best title for the article?
A.Finish tasks while eating B.Imagine yourself eating
C.Eat less and exercise more D.Enjoy dinner with a show

King Uther died. Since he had not left a son, it seemed that there was going to be a bloody fight to see who would be the next King.
Merlin, the great wizard, called a meeting of all the important people in the country to decide how they should choose their King. In the churchyard was a large stone that had not been there before. Stuck into the stone was a large sword, and written on its handle in letters of gold were these words “Whoever can pull this sword out of this stone is the true King.” So all the important people who thought they had any right to be King tried to pull the sword out of the stone, but none of them succeeded. Finally they decided to hold a large fighting competition so that the knights could try each other’s strength and fighting ability.
Sir Ector heard about the competition and came to London, with his two sons Kay and Arthur. Kay hoped to win the competition and became famous. Arthur was just there to help support Kay, and to manage his horse and weapons. But just as they were riding to the competition, Kay realized that he had left his sword at the place where they were staying.” “Go and get it for me, boy!” he said to Arthur — not very politely.
Arthur ran back to the place they were staying, but it was locked — everyone had already gone to see the competition. What could he do? As he was wondering what to do, he looked around and saw the handle of a sword on the other side of a wall. He jumped over the wall and took hold of the sword. Then using his mind to focus his strength as Merlin had taught him to do before, he easily pulled the sword out of the stone.
Since he was in a hurry, he did not look at the sword too carefully, but rushed back to give it to Kay. Kay was just going to say “You stupid boy! This isn’t mine! When he noticed the words on the handle, Kay went to his father, Sir Ector, and said, “You see, I have the sword, and that means that I am the true King!”
Sir Ector led both Kay and Arthur back to the place where the sword had been found. Then he called all the important people to come and see what had happened. When they were all there, Sir Ector asked Arthur to put the sword back into the stone. People all tried to pull the sword out of the stone, but no one could. Then Arthur pulled it out as easily as taking candy from a baby. After they had gone through this several times, some people there asked Merlin how this boy could be the true King. 51 new data (数据) from the UK, a lot of older people enjoy reading books that are classified (分类) as “young adult”, or “YA”. YA fiction is usually intended (为……所用) for people aged between 12 and 18. However, a new report has 52 that three-quarters of YA readers in the UK are adults, and almost one-third are aged over 28. So why do adults enjoy fiction that is 53 teenagers?
The report said it may be because adults are now “growing up more slowly”, so those aged over 18 feel that the themes of YA books still relate to their lives. YA fiction may give them comfort as they delay “adult life”, the report said.
However, some of those who enjoy YA books say there are 54 other reasons why they like them. Some think that YA are just another genre (体裁) to enjoy—and there are examples of good YA fiction and bad YA fiction. 五、阅读填空(共20小题;每小题1分, 满分20分)

It is impossible to name all Chinese customs in a single article. Even so, in this passage we bring you several Chinese customs and traditions that you should know. Here we go!
Chinese usually do not show their feelings openly, also avoiding any unnecessary body touch. The Chinese see badly that people kiss each other on the face, even if they are women. In fact, shaking hands was also not so acceptable in the past. For them it is enough to make a small nod when greeting. As the country gradually lets western traditions in, people are used to shaking hands to greet.
Many food manners must be followed strictly at meals. Some details should be paid much attention to by both guests and hosts. In China, the older guests are always seated first, and then others can take their seats. Food manners are also very important. You should never serve yourself a drink, it should be served by someone else. Chopsticks should never be placed upwards in food. And to eat you must put your mouth close to your own bowl.
The Chinese have the habit and skill of being able to sleep anywhere at any time. It doesn’t matter if it’s on the break from work, in the middle of the street or waiting in a supermarket. This Chinese custom has nothing to do with laziness, quite the opposite. In China, sleeping for a short time in public places is considered a symbol of effort. For example, a photo of a sleeping doctor in the corner of the operating room spread quickly and wildly online. Thousands of netizens (网民) gave the photo a “like” to show their respect to the doctor. So, this person has been putting a lot of effort into his work and it is right that he should sleep as he likes.
Many of you have already known it’s polite not to open gifts in public. But that’s not the only important thing to know when receiving gifts in China. For example, the Chinese will always refuse your gift up to three times to show they are well educated. But in the end, they’re willing to accept it. And remember not to receive the gift with only one hand.
