Born into a family of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners (从业者), 26-year-old Ismail Daurov from Kazakhstan has wanted to follow in his father’s and grandfather’s footsteps and become a practitioner of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) since he was a child.
So when a TCM clinic (诊所) that was jointly built by local and Chinese health workers officially opened about a year ago in Astana, capital of Kazakhstan, Daurov jumped at the opportunity to work there.
“Many Kazakh patients had already looked for other means—even traveling to other countries- to find treatment for their diseases before visiting us, and they were amazed at the immediate results of TCM therapies (疗法) such as acupuncture, cupping and massage, Daurov said.
Li Honggang, a hospital manager from the Xi’an TCM Hospital, working alongside with Daurov, said that because of the country’s cold, windy climate and a traditional diet heavy in beef and lamb, a large number of patients suffer from diseases like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, lower back and leg pain. TCM treatments can play a perfect role in treating these diseases.
“Despite the language barrier (障碍), local patients give us a thumbs-up to express their thanks,” Li said. “Moreover, sometimes we ask them how they learned about the clinic, and many of them say through word of mouth.”
“I am deeply moved by the interest of Kazakh people in TCM,” said Daurov. As for the, future, Daurov hopes more TCM experts from China will come to share their knowledge and experience with Kazakh people, helping build more TCM clinics and expand their services in Kazakshstan. “I want to be a bridge between TCM and Kazakhstan,” he says. “I want to help my people understand and appreciate this ancient wisdom so that they can live healthier and happier lives.

Everyone has their own way of dealing with heartbreak. Some turn to friends for support; some turn to TV streaming services and some turn to ice cream and sweets. But what if you could check yourself into a retreat for a long weekend of “therapy (心理治疗)” as well as beautiful views, all with the purpose of healing (治愈) your broken heart?
The Heartbreak Hotel, run by counseling psychologist Alice Haddon, is offering just that. Launched in late 2021, the residential retreats, specifically designed for women, are held at Barsham Barns, a private home located on the coast of UK county Norfolk.
The Heartbreak Hotel was dreamed up by Haddon, who had taken a break after the death of her mother, and found herself rethinking the way that therapy is conducted traditionally. Through her personal experience, Haddon realized that there were few services available for women struggling to overcome different types of heartbreak. She began exploring the possibility of a new way of therapy that could provide what women really needed.
With her friends on board, Haddon put together the hotel with an all-female team. “This space is really a recovery and self-discovery away from the heartbreak and towards a fresh start,” Haddon says. “We have a specialist working on helping our guests who need professional support,” Haddon adds. “We also encourage our guests with similar experiences to sit together and talk, which we call a group therapy session.”
Aside from that, those who check into The Heartbreak Hotel will also benefit from a menu of plant-based, heart-healing nutritious and delicious meals, as well as fireside gatherings and walks along some of Norfolk’s beautiful beaches.
According to Haddon, every guest may hold a different story. But whatever their reason for checking in might be, the team ultimately have the same aim for every heartbroken guest who walks through their doors. “Our mission at The Heartbreak Hotel is for our guests to leave feeling strong and free to act according to their own love values and needs,” says Haddon.

A company in San Francisco, California, has found a way to turn used plastic bottles into women’s shoes. Every day, millions of Americans drink water and other liquids from plastic bottles. More than 60 million of them are thrown away each day. Many of the plastic bottles end up in landfills (垃圾填埋场) or are burned with other waste products.
A San Francisco start-up company called Rothy’s, however, turns this plastic waste into environmentally friendly shoes. Roth Martin, the company’s co-founder, explains how they turn plastic into soft material for women’s feet. They take the plastic, clean it, and break it down into small pieces. Then they press them through a device (装置) that makes soft fibers (纤维). Those fibers are then combined together. This is done by a 3D machine. It is designed to reduce waste while making the shoes. The processed stuff and the inner part of the shoes are then attached to the shoes’ outer part, called the sole (鞋底). This outer sole is also made from eco-friendly material.
Rothy’s shoes are sold online. They are flat shoes, with different colors and designs. They cost either $125 or $145 per pair, depending on the design. After American actress Gwyneth Paltrow discovered them last year, the demand for the shoes grew. Martin says there is no shortage of material to fill that demand. “We’re not going to run out of water bottles any time soon, so we have a limitless supply of material, and I think that is a good sign for our future.” When the environmentally friendly shoes wear out, customers can return them at no cost to a company that uses the recycled material to make other products.
For now the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international transport in the near future.

“as a second language”意为“作为第二外语”。故填as。

故填who/that。

故填to use。

When I was 15, my parents divorced. I moved in with my dad in a new neighborhood, but he was always so busy and had little time for me. It seemed that the only time he ever spoke to me was to be demanding or critical. I began to hate coming home from school every day. I sank further into my low self-esteem (自尊) and was overwhelmed (充溢) with feeling unappreciated and lonely.
On my 16th birthday, my neighbor’s good friend Ethel came to celebrate my birthday and brought me good news, which was undoubtedly a very happy thing for me. Since she started college, she has hardly returned home. She said she saw some teenagers participating in a public speech competition in town, and she thought I should give it a try too. She told me that she firmly believed that I could perform on stage like other children because she had seen the humorous skits (幽默小品) I performed for my family during Christmas.
I was a little surprised. Me? Onstage? In a public speaking contest? To agree would be contrary to my entire shy personality. But Ethel was so confident and seemed really serious. Feeling her strong belief, I went against all odds (逆境) and agreed to enter the contest.
All that winter, twice a week after dinner, I took three different buses for the three-hour round-trip to practice in town, where the competition would take place. I was taken by an energy I had never felt before. The hours and the difficulties no longer mattered. Although my dad really did love me and wanted the best for me, he disapproved of this new dream, fearing it would take away from my homework time and affect my marks. But I remained a top performer in school and never missed a day.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

With joy, I quickly rushed down to greet my dad and Ethel.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Four months later, the big night arrived. Despite my long-time battle with low self-confidence, nervousness still seized me in front of so many people. Taking a deep breath, I regained my calmness and stepped onto the stage while familiar lines of my speech began to whirl in my mind. When I was about to start, I caught sight of Ethel, and, surprisingly, my dad, who unexpectedly took the time to come to watch, looking at me with expectation. Filled with energy, I wore a big smile and poured out every sentence with fluency. No sooner had I finished the speech than I received warm applause.
With joy, I quickly rushed down to greet my dad and Ethel. His previous critical words were replaced by an excited “congratulations” along with a rarely-seen thumbs-up. Tears filled his eyes, seemingly reflecting complex emotions. Next to him, Ethel’s face flashed with a warm and comforting smile, reminding me of everything that I had gone through. Through their proud expressions, I could tell that it was the effort of us all, either visible or invisible, that drove me to the destination where my shyness had disappeared.

For now, the shoes are only available to be shipped in the United States. However, the company says it will add international transport in the near future.
12. How are used plastic bottles usually dealt with?

D. The company has plans to offer its products outside the United States.
