Lebanese filmmaker Nadine Labaki has become the first female artist in the Arab world to be nominated (提名) for an Academy Award, or Oscar.
Labaki directed the film Capernaum, a film about a Syrian refugee (难民) boy and a Kenyan baby who live without parents on the streets of Beirut. It was nominated for best foreign language film.
Labaki will be one of the few female directors to compete for an Oscar this year. She told the Associated press, “I wish there were a lot more women filmmakers this year represented, nominated in the Oscars. But I am sure in a few years we wont be having this problem anymore.”
Unlike in the West, women filmmakers are industry leaders in Lebanon.
Capernaum received a 15⁃minute standing ovation (热烈欢迎) at this years Cannes Film Festival. It won the Jury Prize—the third⁃highest award given at Cannes.
The United Nations has publicly praised the film, Lebanons Foreign Minister said.
Capernaum put a Lebanese touch on the international film industry.
The Oscar nomination of Capernaum is the second for Lebanon in two years in the film group. It demonstrates the countrys rising star power.
Labaki called making the movie a life⁃changing experience. She said Capernaum helps humanize the real struggles of refugees only briefly talked about in the news.
We cant help but acknowledge that there is a fear of refugees in general around the world and there are these walls we are building, and this fear that keeps growing, Labaki said.
Capernaum will compete against four other films for the Oscar, including awards season favorite Roma. Directed by Mexicos Alfonso Cuaron, it earned 10 Oscar nominations, including for best picture.

Deep in the middle of Sri Lanka, a massive column of rock reaches out from the green tropical forest. It is 660 feet tall and features frescoes (壁画), graffiti, and landscaped gardens.
The rock is known as Sigiriya and holds a special place in the islands cultural history.
It was established as the stronghold of a king over 1,500 years ago, and today the Sigiriya complex stands as one of the earliest preserved examples of ancient urban planning.
Located in the Central Province, the column of rock is somewhat central to the country. The rock is known as Sihagiri, meaning “Lion Rock”, a nod to the giant animal carved from stone which greeted visitors at the entrance.
In 476 B.C. King Dhatusena ruled over Sri Lanka. One of his illegal sons, Kashyapa, wanted the throne (王位). Kashyapa overthrew Dhatusena and drove his brother Moggallana to Southern India. Kashyapa crowned himself king in 477 B.C.
King Kashyapa chose Sigiriya as his palace because its position was an advantage to the defensive stronghold, offering fantastic 360⁃degree views. Plans to build a city quickly unfolded and after several years, the Sigiriya complex had become a business center for the new king.
Sigiriya was both a palace and a fortress (堡垒); the overall complex featured five gates and measured just under 3 km by just over 1 km. The site plan consisted of a fort, an upper palace on the top of the rock, and lower palaces at ground level. The king also constructed gardens throughout, and for protection a river with walls surrounded the complex.
Frescoes decorate the western side of the rock, along with the mirror wall, a brick face covered in a highly⁃polished white plaster. When new, the wall was said to be able to produce reflections. Over time the Mirror Wall became a graffiti board, covered in verses written by visitors. Known as “Sigiri Graffiti”, some of the messages date back to the 8th century C.E.

Next time you find yourself tending to your flower garden, you may want to stay quiet. The flowers are listening.
Israeli scientists discovered that the plants hear bees approaching and attempt to lure them in with sweeter nectar (花蜜). In several experiments, they found that playing audio recordings of buzzing bees around certain flowers will cause the sugar concentration in the nectar to rise by about 20% in less than five minutes. Such a rapid reaction by plants to sound had never previously been reported. Just to compare, the researchers also tried a higher frequency noise—like that made by a mosquito or a bat—and the flowers did not respond.
The authors point out that the behavior is actually in line with the natural order of things, considering that a plants ability to sense its environment and respond to it is critical for its survival. So, it would seem that plants have some sort of consciousness.
This is not the first time that plants have reacted to the sound around them. In a 2009 study, the researchers found that womens voices help make plants grow faster. In that experiment, tomato plants were found to grow up to two inches taller when they were tended to by a female gardener.
What if we told you that a potato chip bag left on the floor of a break room could listen in an office gossip? As people were talking around the potato chip bag, they were sending tiny sound vibrations (振动) into the air. Those vibrations then hit lifeless objects around the room. Now imagine if you had a camera that was zoomed in one of those objects extremely closely. In theory, you could actually see the object move along with the vibrations. You could then feed that video into a computer program that could translate the vibrations and you can play back the audio of the conversation that just took place.
So the next time youre at the botanical garden or in a grocery aisle, be careful with what you say. Someone—or something—might be listening.

13.What is vital for plants to survive?
A. The soil they depend on to grow.
B. The audio recordings played to them.
C. The identification to the sound frequency.
D. The power to sense and react to the environment.
答案与解析 D 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“a plants ability to sense its environment and respond to it is critical for its survival”(植物感知周围环境并对它作出反应的能力对于它的生存很关键)可知,植物对环境的感知和反应能力对生存很关键。故选D项。
14.What can speed up the growth of plants?
A. Womens voices. B. The strength of the vibration.
C. The species of the young plant. D. The number of the music played.
答案与解析 A 细节理解题。根据第四段第二句“In a 2009 study, the researchers found that womens voices help make plants grow faster.”(在2009年的一个研究中,研究者发现女性的声音能帮助植物长得更快)可知,女性的声音可以加速植物的生长。故选A项。
15.What is the main idea of the text?
A. Plants may have the ability to listen.
B. Sound vibrations can be processed into an audio.
C. Buzzing bees can increase the production of nectar.
D. The frequency of vibration determines plants growth.

How to Overcome Shyness
Have you ever found it embarrassing to talk in front of the public? In fact, a great number of people are struggling with shyness. 1
● Act confidently.
Confidence comes through action, learning, practice, and mastery. Remember when you learned how to ride a bike? It was terrifying at first, but after you just went for it and tried it, you got it, and felt confident. Social confidence works the same way. 2 Remove avoidance and you will overcome your anxiety.
● Engage yourself.
This means participating in small talk in the checkout line and talking to strangers at bars, stores, sporting events, and the gym. Additionally, approach the individuals by whom you are attracted romantically. Talk to them. Ask them to dance. Ask them out on dates.
Life is short. Who cares if you get rejected? There are seven billion people on this planet. Youre not expected to like or be liked by all of them. 3
● 4
Join a club, a sports team or an outdoor activity. Pick up a new project or learn a new skill. Do something to get out of your comfort zone. Part of overcoming shyness is about developing confidence in several areas of your life and not letting anxiety, fear of failure, fear of rejection, or fear of humiliation get in your way. By practicing new activities, you are confronting your fear of the unknown and learning to handle that anxiety more effectively.
● Talk it out.
