B If Natalie Morales had to describe her mom in just one word, she would pick: survivor. That’s because her mom, Penelope Morales had a tough childhood. “Her mother wasn’t ready to be a mom and gave her up to her grandmother,” says Natalie, “I think she often felt in life like she wasn’t wanted and wasn’t loved.” Penelope Morales put herself through college and it was there that she met Natalie’s dad, who was serving in the military. They fell in love and married, and her life as a military mom of three children became a great adventure. “She basically raised us moving from place to place. I was born in Taiwan, China, but we lived in Panama, Brazil and Spain. And my mom was the constant,” says Natalie, “She would always make sure that when we got home from school, we felt like we had our number-one fan, our champion right there, waiting for us.” Along the way, Natalie learned many things from her mother, which she carries on in her role as a mother of two sons. As a Mother’s Day gift, Natalie treated her mom to a day of pampering (宠爱). “I want my mom to feel like a queen,” she says. And as part of the surprise, Natalie brought along an old photo of her mother, which she wanted to recreate. “I think it was taken in the mid-60s. So she was in her early to mid twenties. She’s just absolutely a beautiful woman. But she’s looking in the mirror. It’s like not knowing really her future, but knowing where she’s come from,” describes Natalie. “That picture just speaks so much to me. I want her to see what she created in that mirror, and that she gave us all something so great.” “It’s just an amazing experience to take this picture and have Natalie do it. I could never imagine in my entire life,” says Penelope Morales, who adds that she’s very proud of her daughter, “All I want her is to be happy and to raise her children the same way,” she says. 41.What can be inferred about Natalie’s mother? A.She survived an adventure fortunately. B.Her mother gave her up because of poverty. C.At college she met her husband, a schoolmate. D.Her mother felt that she was nothing. 42.What did Natalie learn from her mother? A.Giving children great love. B.Moving house constantly. C.Always picking up children from school. D.Often taking children on adventures. 43.What did Natalie do on Mother’s Day? A.She treated her mother to a big meal. B.She took her mother to take pictures. C.She pleased her mother by polishing an old photo. D.She gave her mother a big surprise with her sons. 44.What can we say about the gift Natalie gave her mother? A.It was expected. B.It was a success. C.It made her mother dependent on her. D.It brought tears to her mother’s eyes. 45.What does the author mainly want to tell us in the passage? A.Natalie loves and respects her mother very much. B.Natalie’s mother has suffered too much all her life. C.Natalie’s mother thinks highly of her daughter’s gift. D.Natalie’s “survivor” mom deserves the special Mother’s Day gift. C The human brain remembers negative experiences more easily than positive ones. Our brains have developed in this way because threats, like dangerous animals, have a more immediate effect on people’s survival compared to positive things like food or shelter. As a result, you clearly know what makes you unhappy, but do you know what makes you happy? Research suggests that our level of happiness depends partly on factors we cannot control—our genes and our life circumstances. But our level of happiness is also partly shaped by the choices we make. If you’ve been chasing wealth, fame, power and some material things, you may be looking for happiness in the wrong places. Psychologists suggest that the following habits can make people happier. People who own close relationships tend to be happier than those who do not. The number of our friends is not the most important. What matters is the quality of our relationships. Relationships that bring happiness usually consist of the sharing of feelings, acceptance, mutual respect and trust. People who exercise regularly can improve both their physical and mental well-being. Some research has shown that exercise can be as effective as some medicine in treating depression. If we are so interested in an activity, we may lose track of time, and we can be in a state of flow. The activity could be playing the piano, surfing the Internet or playing a game...People who experience flow in their work or life tend to be happier. People are more likely to be happy if they know what their advantages are and can use them regularly. People are especially happy when they can set goals and use their strengths to achieve them. People, who think positively by being grateful, mindful and optimistic, are more likely to be happy. Being grateful means being thankful. Being mindful means considering, focusing on, and enjoying the experiences of the present moment. Being optimistic means being hopeful for the future. 46.Why do human brains remember negative things more easily? A.Because negative things have more immediate effects on our lives. B.Because human beings choose to remember negative things well. C.Because our ancestors were unable to find enough food for living. D.Because there are too many dangerous wild animals in the open. 47.According to the passage, what may our level of happiness be shaped by? A.The wealth we earn B.The social environment C.Our realized goals D.Our academic performance 48.Close relationships that can bring happiness require people to ________. A.share the feelings of each other B.work hard for the same goals C.trust each other unconditional D.share the same habits 49.People are more likely to be happy at work ________. A.if they can do something else at the same time B.if they exercise regularly C.when they feel time goes fast D.when they know they’re working on what they’re good at 50.What does the passage mainly talk about? A.Why it is hard for some people to be happy. B.Why people remember negative things easily C.What makes people negative D.What makes people happy D What is your calling? What is your purpose in life? What did you come to this world to do? Every day we read about how we should find our purpose and pursue it throughout our lives in order to find meaning and contentment. There are even scientific studies that show people who view their work as a calling rather than just a career or a job have a higher life and work satisfaction. So, what exactly is this calling? I’ve personally struggled with this concept for many years. I knew that happiness not only came from a present state of joy, but also from the pursuit of an objective that gave me something to pursue. That is, until I found myself feeling empty despite my achievement of those goals. And as I reflected on these feelings of emptiness and boredom that had arisen despite my successes, I realized something. Meaning and satisfaction come from a personal devotion to what we do and the intrinsic (固有的) fulfillment we get from it. It has nothing to do with financial gain, social advancement or any other type of external reward or motivation. It is about doing something that we love. It is about focusing our efforts and spending our time on passions that light the spark inside of us and allow us to share with the world the unique gifts we possess. I had never before stopped to think about what I found intrinsically rewarding or fulfilling. Financial gain and external recognition were pretty much the only drivers I knew. More so, I thought this calling meant having one passion we were born with to pursue relentlessly (不懈地). So, I spent some years trying to find this long-lost purpose of mine. I discovered during that time passions I had no idea I even had. Yet, I wasn’t sure how to make them into my life purpose. I searched for an answer but couldn’t find it. It wasn’t until I came to understand the truths about our purpose in life that I was able to find my place in this world. Our purpose can consist of various things that make us feel alive. As we grow and evolve throughout the different stages in our lives, we may discover new passions and desires that change our sense of purpose and calling. We all have a longing for lives that give meaning to our existence. The difference lies in how we go about accomplishing this. We must each find our own “shine” and then shine on. 51.According to the passage, the calling refers to________. A.one’s view about careers B.a task one has to carry out C.a life-long career one chooses D.a strong desire or sense of duty to do a job 52.Which of the following belongs to the author’s previous drivers for finding fulfillment? A.Financial gain and external recognition. B.Pursuing passions relentlessly. C.Discovering new passions. D.Finding purpose in life. 53.What is the real purpose in life according to the author? A.Trying to do everything that you can. B.Trying to achieve your ambitious goals. C.Doing meaningful things with your passion. D.Doing something that can be successful easily. 54.According to the 5th paragraph, we know that________. A.the author spent some years making changes B.the author used to think he had no passion at all C.the author didn’t know how to search for the life purpose D.the author has known his passions since he started to work 55.What conclusion can be drawn from the passage? A.It’s wise to give up discovering our one true passion. B.It’s useless to pursue financial gain and external recognition. C.It’s necessary to find our own calling and pursue it with vigor. D.It’s important to share our passion with the world without stopping. One hot August afternoon, Deena Hoagland and her son Joe sat on a floating platform at Dolphins Plus, a marine center in Key Largo, Florida. Nearby, a large dolphin circled, occasionally lifting its head through the water to observe them. Suddenly, the dolphin threw water on them. Three-year-old Joe, who had a stroke (中风) six weeks earlier, smiled and laughed for the first time since. Joe was born with a rare heart condition and spent much of his first three years in hospitals. After several heart surgeries, the last one led to a stroke, which left him unconscious for eight days As a result, he lost movement on one side of his body and couldn’t see out of one eye. Feeling hopeless and deeply saddened, Joe became despondent and lost interest in everything, even his favorite toys. Doctors suggested placing him in a full-time rehabilitation center. Deena refused and decided to try dolphin-assisted therapy. She called Dolphins Plus and got permission to bring Joe. To the surprise of Lloyd Borgas, the owner, Deena arrived with Joe minutes after the call. Borgas was unsure about the wisdom of his generosity but led them to a platform where Joe met Fonzie, a playful dolphin. Joe’s reaction to Fonzie was positive, and Deena brought him back daily. Joe slowly began to recover from his depression. With each visit, he regained some movement on his left side. Trainers encouraged Joe to swim with Fonzie, and by mid-September, he was swimming with his new friend. Trainers challenged Joe to feed Fonzie with his left hand, helping him regain strength. Over the next two years, Joe fully recovered. Now a healthy teenager, Joe frequently visits Fonzie and helps his parents with Island Dolphin Care, a program Deena started to help other special-needs children. The program has been successful, helping many children and their families. Deena emphasizes that while dolphins have no special healing powers, the joy and laughter they bring to children can feel magical. 56.Why did Joe smile and laugh for the first time since his stroke? B.Why people remember negative things easily C.What makes people negative D.What makes people happy 【答案】46.A 47.B 48.A 49.D 50.D 【分析】这是一篇说明文。 根据文章第一段内容“Our brains have developed in this way because threats, like dangerous animals, have a more immediate effect on people’s survival compared to positive things like food or shelter. As a result, you clearly know what makes you unhappy, but do you know what makes you happy?(我们的大脑是这样发展的,因为与食物或住所等积极事物相比,威胁,比如危险的动物,对人类的生存有更直接的影响。因此,你很清楚什么让你不快乐,但你知道什么让你快乐吗?)”可知,是因为消极的事物或危险对生存有更直接的影响,所以人类的大脑更容易记住消极的事情。故选A项。 47. 根据文章第二段内容“Research suggests that our level of happiness depends partly on factors we cannot control—our genes and our life circumstances. But our level of happiness is also partly shaped by the choices we make.(研究表明,我们的幸福程度部分取决于我们无法控制的因素——我们的基因和我们的生活环境。但我们的幸福程度也部分地受到我们所做的选择的影响。)”可知,幸福程度受到基因,生活环境,以及所做的选择的影响。选项B“The social environment(社会环境)”与属于生活环境之一,符合原文表述。故选B项。 48.细节理解题。根据文章第三段内容“Relationships that bring happiness usually consist of the sharing of feelings, acceptance, mutual respect and trust.(能带来幸福的关系通常包括分享感受、接受、相互尊重和信任。)” 故选A项。 49. 根据文章第六段内容“People are more likely to be happy if they know what their advantages are and can use them regularly. People are especially happy when they can set goals and use their strengths to achieve them. (如果人们知道自己的优势并能经常利用它们,他们就更有可能快乐。当人们能够设定目标并利用自己的优势去实现它们时,他们会特别高兴。)”可知,当人们能够知道自己的优势,并利用它们实现目标,就会有幸福感。由此可推知,当人们认识到,工作时就是在做自己擅长的事情,他们更有可能在工作中感到快乐。故选D项。 50.主旨大意题。通读文章内容可知,文章第一段末尾句内容“As a result, you clearly know what makes you unhappy, but do you know what makes you happy?(因此,你清楚地知道什么让你不快乐,但你知道什么让你快乐吗?)” D“What makes people happy(什么让人快乐)”贴合主题,概括了文章的主旨大意。故选D项。 D What is your calling? 根据第一自然段“There are even scientific studies that show people who view their work as a calling rather than just a career or a job have a higher life and work satisfaction.  (甚至有科学研究表明,将工作视为一种使命而不仅仅是一种职业或工作的人,他们的生活和工作满意度更高。)”以及第四自然段“ More so, I thought this calling meant having one passion we were born with to pursue relentlessly (不懈地). (更重要的是,我认为这种使命感意味着拥有一种与生俱来的激情,那就是坚持不懈地追求。)”可知,使命感指的是强烈的工作欲望或责任感。故选D。 52.细节理解题。根据第四自然段“ Financial gain and external recognition were pretty much the only drivers I knew. Yet, I wasn’t sure how to make them into my life purpose.  (在那段时间里,我发现了我甚至不知道自己有过的激情。然而,我不知道如何让它们成为我的人生目标。)”可知,根据第5段可知,作者过去认为他一点激情都没有。故选B。 55.推理判断题。根据最后一段“We all have a longing for lives that give meaning to our existence. The difference lies in how we go about accomplishing this. We must each find our own “shine” and then shine on. (no more than 10 words) 57.What difficulties did Joe experience after his surgery? (no more than 15 words) 58.What does the underlined word “despondent” in Paragraph 2? (1 word) 59.What is the main idea of Paragraph 4? (no more than 10 words) 60.Do you want to make friends with an animal? Please give your reason(s). (no more than 20 words) 【答案】56.Because the dolphin threw water on them. 57.Joe couldn’t move one side and had trouble seeing. 58.Hopeless / Depressed / Sad / Unhappy. 59.Joe improved physically and emotionally by spending time with Fonzie. Or: Joe got better by spending time with Fonzie. Or: Joe was healed by being with Fonzie. 60.Yes, because animals offer love, companionship, and comfort during stressful times. Or. No, because I feel more connected to people and prefer human relationships for support and companionship. 【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了Deena的儿子Joe因心脏病手术中风后情绪低落,在海豚Fonzie的陪伴下逐渐康复,Deena还启动项目帮助其他特殊需求儿童。 56.考查细节理解。根据第一段中“Suddenly, the dolphin threw water on them. Three year old Joe, who had a stroke (中风) six weeks earlier, smiled and laughed for the first time since.(突然,海豚向他们喷水。六周前中风的三岁的乔自那以来第一次开始微笑,并开怀大笑起来)”可知,Joe自中风后第一次微笑和大笑是因为海豚向他们喷水。故答案为:Because the dolphin threw water on them. 57.考查细节理解。根据第二段中“As a result, he lost movement on one side of his body and couldn’t see out of one eye.(结果,他身体的一侧失去了活动能力,一只眼睛也看不见了)”可知,Joe手术后身体一侧无法活动,一只眼睛视力有问题。故答案为:Joe couldn’t move one side and had trouble seeing. 58.考查词句猜测。根据划线词前“Feeling hopeless and deeply saddened(感到绝望和极度悲伤)”和其后“lost interest in everything (对一切都失去了兴趣)”可知,Joe手术后非常悲伤,对一切都失去了兴趣,由此推知,他变得绝望、沮丧、悲伤和不开心,这就是划线词despondent可能的意思。故答案为:Hopeless/Depressed/Sad/Unhappy. 59.考查主旨大意。根据第四段“Joe’s reaction to Fonzie was positive, and Deena brought him back daily. Joe slowly began to recover from his depression. With each visit, he regained some movement on his left side. Trainers encouraged Joe to swim with Fonzie, and by mid September, he was swimming with his new friend. Trainers challenged Joe to feed Fonzie with his left hand, helping him regain strength. Over the next two years, Joe fully recovered. Joe improved physically and emotionally by spending time with Fonzie.  Or: Joe got better by spending time with Fonzie.  Or: Joe was healed by being with Fonzie. 60.考查开放性题目,可根据自己的想法作答。我想选择和动物交朋友,是因为动物能给予爱、陪伴和安慰;我不想和动物交朋友,是因为更愿意与人建立关系。故答案为:Yes, because animals offer love, companionship, and comfort during stressful times. They fell in love and married, and her life as a military mom of three children became a great adventure. “She basically raised us moving from place to place. I was born in Taiwan, China, but we lived in Panama, Brazil and Spain. 第三部分:写作 第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分) 阅读短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。 One hot August afternoon, Deena Hoagland and her son Joe sat on a floating platform at Dolphins Plus, a marine center in Key Largo, Florida.
