MOTHER OF TEN THOUSAND BABIES
“Life is precious<1>.…To a person ①nothing is more precious than their life, and if they entrust<2> me with that life, how could I refuse that trust, ②saying I'm cold, hungry, or tired?” These words of Dr Lin Qiaozhi give us ③a look into the heart of this amazing woman, and what carried her through<3> a life of hard choices.
①nothing is more precious than their life是否定词和比较级连用表示最高级的含义,相当于their life is the most precious。
②saying I'm cold, hungry, or tired是现在分词短语作伴随状语。
③此句中,the heart of this amazing woman和what carried…
As a five-year-old girl,Lin Qiaozhi was deeply affected<4> by her mother's death. At age 18, instead of following the traditional path of marriage<5> ④like the majority<6> of girls, she chose to study medicine.“Why should girls learn so much? ⑤Finding a good husband should be their final goal!” her brother complained<7>,thinking of the high tuition<8> fees<9>. She responded<10>, “I'd rather stay<11> single to study all my life!”

Eight years later, Lin graduated from Peking Union<12> Medical College (PUMC) with the Wenhai Scholarship<13>, ⑥the highest prize given to graduates. She immediately became ⑦the first woman ever to be hired<14> as a resident physician<15> in the OB-GYN department of the PUMC Hospital. Within six months, she was named a chief resident physician, ⑧a position<16> that usually took four years to achieve. She greatly impressed her American colleagues<17>, ⑨who invited her to stay.Dr Lin, however, rejected<18> the offer. She wanted to serve the women and children at home.
