My earliest reading memory takes me back to being five years old, sitting in my grandfather’s cozy study. He would read to me from his French-translated copy of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. I was so familiar with the stories that I could correct him word-for-word if he tried to change something.
Growing up, my favorite book was Ray Bradbury’s Something Wicked This Way Comes. It was a treasure for an imaginative and lonely child like me. The book was filled with magical elements: a magical carousel, monsters, and the charming scent of autumn leaves lying in the sun. The language was as crisp and sweet as an October apple, awakening in me a deep passion for words and the magic they could bring out. I’ve reread it regularly and it never fails to satisfy me.
In my adult years, I revisited Emily Brontë’s Wuthering Heights. When I first read it at 16, I perceived it as a love story. However, rereading it as an adult, I was struck by how different it seemed to me, and how much of the humour I’d missed. Now I love its poetry. And the love story not only exists between the characters but between Brontë and the North York Moors.
James Joyce’s Ulysses was a book I came back to after 40 years. Initially, at 15, I found it ugly, depressing, and dull, and I hated it. It took me four decades to return to it, and this time, I found myself understanding and beginning to appreciate it. I could see the details, the mythic parallels, the references to different writing styles, and the groundbreaking technique.
Though some exceptional books can develop and grow alongside us, others fall by the wayside. I’ve revisited so many childhood favourites only to find the magic gone, but I’m usually happy to leave the book behind. I’ve taken from it what I need.
4. What was the author’s earliest reading memory?
A. Copying the stories of Rudyard Kipling.
B. Reading Something Wicked This Way Comes.
C. Studying Ulysses for writing styles.
D. Listening to The Jungle Book in French.
5. Which part of Wuthering Heights gave the author a different feeling as an adult?
A. The complex plot. B. The characters.
C. The humour and poetry. D. The love story.
6. What do the underlined words “fall by the wayside” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Remain unchanged over years. B. Lose their original attraction.
C. Gain widespread popularity. D. Are left by the side of the road.
7. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. The Changing Power of Reading
B. The Development of Reading Taste
C. The Lifelong Journey of Rereading Classics
D. The Childhood Memories in Reading Habits

What a Messy Desk Says About You
For some time, psychologists have been studying how personality traits affect health and health-related choices. Not surprisingly, they have found that people blessed with innate conscientiousness, meaning that they are organized and predictable, typically eat better and live longer than people who are disorderly. They also tend to have immaculate offices.
What has been less clear is whether neat environments can produce good habits even in those who aren’t necessarily innately conscientious. To find out, researchers at the University of Minnesota conducted a series of experiments. In the first experiment, they randomly assigned a group of college-age students to spend time in two office spaces, one of which was very neat, the other wildly cluttered (乱堆) with papers and other work-related stuff. The students spent their time filling out questionnaires unrelated to the study. After 10 minutes, they were told they could leave with an apple or a chocolate bar. Those students who sat in the orderly office were twice as likely to choose the apple as those who sat among the mess.
A second experiment, however, found that working in chaos has its advantages, too. In this one, college students were placed in a messy or a neat office and asked to dream up new uses for Ping-Pong balls. Those in messy spaces generated ideas that were significantly more creative, according to two independent judges, than those in offices where stacks of papers and other objects were neatly arranged.
The results were something of a surprise, says Dr. Vohs, the leader of the study. Few previous studies found much virtue in disorder. The broken window theory, proposed decades ago, holds that even slight disorder and neglect can encourage indifference and poor discipline.
But in the study by Dr. Vohs, disordered offices encouraged originality and a search for novelty. In the final portion of the study, adults were given the choice of adding a health “boost” to their lunchtime smoothie that was labeled either “new” or “classic.” The volunteers in the messy space were far more likely to choose the new one; those in the tidy office generally chose the classic version. “Disorderly environments seem to inspire breaking free of tradition,” Dr. Vohs and her co-authors conclude in the study, “which can produce fresh insights.”
The implications of these findings are also practical. “My advice would be, if you need to think outside the box for a future project”, Dr. Vohs says, “then let the clutter rise and free your imagination. But if your primary goal is to eat well or to go to the gym, pick up around your office first. By doing this, the naturally messy can acquire some of the discipline of the conscientious.”
8. The underlined word “immaculate” in paragraph 1 probably means ______.
A. messy B. tidy
C. terrible D. comfortable
9. Which of the following can best explain the broken window theory?
A Chaos begets chaos. B. Misfortune may be an actual blessing.
C. Bad news has wings. D. When a door shuts, a window opens.
10. Which of the following will Dr. Vohs probably agree with?
A. More virtue exists in organized people.
B. Creativity results from tidiness and discipline.
C. Disorderly surroundings help to create new ideas.
D. Workers’ good habits guarantee the success of a project.
11. What can we conclude from the study results?
A. The naturally neat people tend to be very creative.
B. A messy office will cause quite low working efficiency.
C. Environments can affect people’s way of thinking and behavior.
D. People’s personalities are determined by their working environments.

If you live in Shanghai, you might have to take a "lesson" in sorting garbage, as the city recently introduced new garbage-sorting regulations. It's now required that people should sort garbage into four categories, namely recyclable, harmful, dry and wet waste. However, if people fail to sort their garbage properly, they can be fined up to 200 yuan. More cities are introducing similar regulations, following the practice in Shanghai. By the end of 2020, garbage-sorting systems will have been built in 46 major Chinese cities, including Beijing and Shenzhen, reported People's Daily.
According to a study by the Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy, under the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, over 90 percent of the public believe that garbage sorting is important for the protection of the environment. However, garbage sorting is still a big problem in China. Only 30 percent of participants said they think they are adequately sorting their trash, the study noted.
According to Xinhua News Agency, it's partly because many people lack the willingness to sort their own waste, In the past. Some previous garbage regulations didn't give clear fines for people who failed to sort garbage. "It's a must to have a legal guarantee to promote garbage sorting." Liu Jianguo, a professor from Tsinghua University, told China Daily. He also added "the importance of the new regulations in Shanghai is to change the past voluntary action into compulsory action for everyone.
Aside from China, many other foreign countries have also introduced garbage-sorting regulations. In Japan, waste sorting has become a basic survival skill, reported Xinhua. There is a fixed time for disposal of each kind of garbage and littering can result in high fines and even jail time. In Germany too, people are asked to sort waste into specific categories, reported HuffPost. For example, in Berlin, people have yellow bins for plastic and metals and blue bins for paper and cardboard.
12. What can we learn from paragraph 1?
A. All the cities use the same regulations as Shanghai.
B. Shanghai works as a pioneer in garbage sorting.
C. Poisonous waste belongs to four categories in sorting.
D. People will be fined not less than 200 yuan.
13. Which statement is true according to the passage?
A. Not all the public attach importance to garbage sorting.
B Garbage-sorting system have been built in 46 major cities.
C. People may be put in prison because of littering in Germany.
D. People aren't fined clearly if they fail to sort garbage now.
14. What can be inferred from Liu Jianguo's words?
A. The sorting action should be changed from compulsory to voluntary.
B. He thinks highly of the legal regulations in garbage sorting.
C. There is a growing concern over garbage sorting worldwide.
D. Legal guarantee is a must to promote garbage sorting.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Regulations Are of Great Importance
B. Shanghai Puts Garbage-sorting Into Practice
C. Cities Get Serious About Waste
D. Garbage Is Hard to Recycle Appropriately

On a sunny afternoon, her favourite neighbour, Mrs. Baker, visited her.
“I need your help, Callie,” Mrs. Baker said. “Do you know the empty lot (空地) down the street?” Callie nodded, smiling. The place is a mess, covered with rubbish. “The city is letting us use the lot for a community garden,” she explained. “We need help to clean up the lot on Saturday.”
“Sure, Mrs. Baker! ” Callie said cheerfully. “I will be happy to help you!”
Mrs. Baker looked pleased and said, “Thanks, Callie. We want to get the garden planted before summer. By then, adults and children in our community will have a good place to go.”
At school the next morning, Callie’s best friend Tamara was waiting for her in their classroom. Tamara said excitedly, “My mum bought tickets to go to Fun World this Saturday. She has an extra one for you!” The girls had been waiting for months for the new amusement park to open.
Callie sighed and worried about her problem for the rest of the day.
Her mother noticed her mood when she arrived home. “Did something go wrong at school?” her mother asked.
Callie explained her problem. “What should I do, Mum?” Callie asked.

【答案】4. D 5. C 6. D 7. C

【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“When I first read it at 16, I perceived it as a love story. However, rereading it as an adult, I was struck by how different it seemed to me, and how much of the humour I’d missed. Now I love its poetry. And the love story not only exists between the characters but between Brontë and the North York Moors.(当我16岁第一次读到这本书时,我认为这是一个爱情故事。

A. Chaos begets chaos. B. Misfortune may be an actual blessing.

Professor Lewina Lee from Boston University said: “Our findings speak to the possibility that raising levels of optimism may promote longevity and healthy aging. ”And she advises that pessimists could benefit from doing things like imagining a future where everything turns out well.
But if you’re a ‘glass half empty’ type of person, could seeing the world through rose-tinted glasses work for you? Every bean has its black. ____19____. Some people say it’s best to celebrate the positives and ignore the negative parts of our lives.

Callie was a high school student. Living in a quiet and warm community with her parents, Callie was keen (热衷的) on various volunteer activities in the community, and almost no one in the community didn’t know her.

Callie spent the rest of the evening thinking about her decision. She wanted to go to Fun World, but in the end, she decided that her promise to her neighbour was more important. The next day at school, Callie apologized to Tamara and told her that she would not be able to go to Fun World. Tamara tried to understand, but Callie could tell that she was disappointed. The girls hardly spoke for the rest of the week. They kept silent with great care.
On Saturday, Callie met Mrs. Baker at the empty lot. “Hi, Callie,” her neighbour said, “thank you for helping us today.” “You’re welcome,” Callie said. Callie smiled as she walked across the lot with a large rubbish bag. “Do you need any help?” a voice behind her asked. Callie turned, surprised to see Tamara. “I want to help you. My mum said she would take us to Fun World next weekend.” With joint efforts, they finished the cleaning. Both Callie and Tamara have learnt that once a promise is made, it needs to be kept.
