It is believed in some ways that the daughter is father’s lover. But my experience has taught me in a different way. For a long time, my father has been a very vague (模糊的) figure to me. He was a man of few words, tall but slim and nothing else.
When I was in primary school, my father was never there to pick me up, and he never came to any of my parent-teacher meetings. He was always busy doing projects. I remember when I was in middle school and my head was badly hurt in a PE class. During my operation, my father was still busy with his work. This hurt me most. At that moment, I thought my father as a cold-blooded man who did not care about me at all.
But things seemed different. I would give a speech at my high school graduation ceremony (毕业典礼). My father, once again, couldn’t attend it because he had a business trip in a place outside the city. “Don’t come. I will be nervous if I see you.” I told him.
I remember my speech was successful. After the ceremony, I was about to leave. I suddenly noticed a man sitting in a corner of the hall. It was my father! I was so surprised that I rushed to him with tears running down my face. “Well done.” he said. His eyes were also filled with tears.
Later, I knew that my father had managed to finish his work by staying up late, and he drove for eight hours to get back. He sat in the corner because he didn’t want me to see him. My father remembered every word in my speech.
For much of my life, I described my father was a cold-blooded man who only cared about his work. But when I thought deeply about this, it was clearly not true. At my graduation ceremony I could feel my father’s deep love. The fact is that seeing is not believing, and seeing may not be the fact if we don’t perceive (感知) the world with our hearts and minds. Life is full of love, but sometimes our eyes have trouble seeing it.
29. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. The writer’s father was in the hospital during her operation.
B. The writer’s father attended her high school graduation ceremony.
C. The writer’s father sometimes picked her up when she was in primary school.
D. The writer’s father went to parent-teacher meetings when she was in primary school.
30. The writer rushed to her father with tears running down her face because _________.
A. she gave a speech successfully B. the graduation ceremony was over
C. she was so nervous that she couldn’t help crying D. she was touched to find her father cared about her
31. What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to (指代)?
A. That my father was always doing projects. B. That my father was a cold-blooded man.
C. That my father sat in the corner of the hall. D. That my father’s eyes were filled with tears.
32. What’s the best title of the passage?

C. Seeing is not believing D. A wonderful speech
【答案】29 B 30. D 31. B 32. C

【31题详解】

C
There are 8 billion humans on Earth. The sun is 150 million kilometers away. The universe (宇宙) may have 200 billion trillion (万亿) stars...
As scientists explore the world with more and more advanced (先进的) tools, the numbers used are also becoming bigger. Recently, scientists added four new names for really big and really small measurements (度量): ronna (1027), quetta (1030), ronto (10-27) and quecto (10-30).
Do you find these numbers too big to make sense (有意义)? Don’t worry. Almost all human brains have a problem dealing with big numbers. “While living and evolving (进化), our ancestors (祖先) had no need to develop such a skill,” US mathematician Spencer Greenberg told the science website Gizmodo. Early humans only needed to understand small quantities (数量), like the number of people in the clan (族群), or how many animals they had caught. “So it’s not important to differentiate large from very large from an evolutionary perspective (进化的角度).”
However, there are some methods that can help us better understand big numbers. One way is to turn big numbers into something you are familiar with. For example, if imagining 400, 000 people is too hard, you can think that an average soccer stadium can hold around 40, 000 people. Then 400,000 people mean 10 soccer stadiums of people. Or if you have 1, 000 yuan, then a millionaire (百万富翁) has 1, 000 times more money than you.
Needless to say, there are limits to these methods. “This is why we often just ‘do the math’,” said Greenberg. “We can work with large numbers in calculations (计算) and get useful answers. We just can’t necessarily understand the numbers throughout that process (过程).
33. What might one quetta refer to?
A. One followed by 30 zeros. B. A decimal point (小数点) followed by 26 zeros.
C. One followed by 27 zeros. D. A decimal point (小数点) followed by 29 zeros.
34. According to Paragraph 3 we can learn that _________.
A. there were no large numbers in ancient times
B. ancient people didn’t need to understand big numbers
C. human brains don’t have a problem dealing with big numbers
D. big numbers appear throughout human evolution
35. According to the story, we can understand big numbers by ________.
A. comparing the numbers to money
B. imagining how many people there are on Earth
C. thinking about how many soccer stadiums we have
D. turning them into something we are familiar with
36. What can we infer from the story?
A. Math is the best subject for us to understand the world.
B. People cannot understand numbers by doing calculations.
C. Extremely large numbers cannot be calculated.
D. Calculations help us deal with large numbers.
【答案】33. A 34. B 35. D 36. D

Have you ever tasted a kind of snack, which is also of the traditional Chinese of forms of art—sugar painting.
Sugar painting started from the Ming Dynasty and became popular in the Qing Dynasty. At that time, many people made a living through sugar painting, setting up stalls(货摊)in crowded streets, in front of theatres and busy public places. And now it can still be found in many areas of China.
The sugar painters usually sit before a wooden table. On the side, there is a wooden plate with a revolvable arrow(可旋转箭头)on it. The plate is painted with different pictures such as a dragon, a bird, a flower and so on. After paying, the customers turn the arrow and wait till it stops. The picture pointed by the arrow is the one the painters will make.
Sugar painting is very different from normal painting. The sugar painters use syrup(糖浆)as the material, a spoon as the “paintbrush”, and a smooth slab(台面)as the “paper”. To make the syrup, they have to make sugar hot before painting. Since the syrup may become solid(固体的)if it cools, the painters have to produce the work very quickly.
D The writer’s father went to parent-teacher meetings when she was in primary school.
A. My busy father B. Life is full of love
C. Seeing is not believing D. A wonderful speech
34. According to Paragraph 3, we can learn that _________.
A. there were no large numbers in ancient times
B. ancient people didn’t need to understand big numbers
C. human brains don’t have a problem dealing with big numbers
D. big numbers appear throughout human evolution

They move the spoon full of the syrup up and down, left and right. Soon a sugar painting of an animal, a flower or a bike is done.
The number of sugar painters is getting smaller. However, some of them still insist on this art. They make their efforts to hold different activities such as offering classes and giving speeches. Now, sugar painting has already been listed as National Non-Material Culture Heritage.
