Young people spending hours staring at screens means half the world may need glasses within 30 years. Phone and computer screens increase the risk of short-sightedness among children and young adults, say scientists.
Researchers have found high levels of looking at a phone or tablet (掌上电脑) is linked with around a 30 percent higher risk of short-sightedness (近视), also known as myopia. But when it is together with too much computer use, which risk rose to around 80 percent.
Staring at a screen continuously for hours on end causes focusing fatigue. To avoid this, many eye experts suggest the“20-20-20 rule”—looking away from your phone/computer screen every 20 minutes and focusing on an object at least 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
Smartphone blindness happens when people lie on their side at night, with one eye against the pillow (枕头) and the other staring at the smartphone screen. While one eye adjusts to the dark, the other eye gets used to the bright light of the high-resolution screen.
Most monitors (显示器) let you adjust the color temperature by hand. It’s best to use a warmer(yellowish) color temperature in dark rooms and a colder (bluer) color temperature in bright rooms.
Professor Bourne from Anglia Ruskin University said: “Our study shows a potential (潜在) link between screen time and myopia in young people, and it is clear that more research is needed to further understand how digital devices can affect our eyes and vision (视觉).” The study was published in The Lancet Digital Health.
19. What does this passage mainly talk about?
A. The causes of short-sightedness. B. How to protect our eyes.
C. A research finding. D. Smartphone blindness.
20. How do the scientists support their opinion in paragraph 2?
A. By listing numbers. B. By comparing facts.
C. By giving an example. D. By explaining the reasons.
21. What do you think the underlined word fatigue in the second paragraph might mean?
A. increase B. tiredness C. difficulty D. improvement
22. Which of the following is TRUE?
A. Half of the young people around the world need glasses.
B. Scientists have found out how digital devices affect our eyesight.
C. Using smartphones or computers continuously increases the risk of myopia.
D. The more quickly you get used to the screen, the better you can protect your eyesight.

Young people spending hours staring at screens means half the world may need glasses within 30 years. Phone and computer screens increase the risk of short-sightedness among children and young adults, say scientists.
Researchers have found high levels of looking at a phone or tablet (掌上电脑) is linked with around a 30 percent higher risk of short-sightedness (近视) also known as myopia.
Professor Bourne from Anglia Ruskin University said: “Our study shows a potential (潜在的) link between screen time and myopia in young people, and it is clear that more research is needed to further understand how digital devices can affect our eyes and vision (视觉).” The study was published in The Lancet Digital Health.
