For animals living on the land, they face no special challenge when they need to stop running out for flying animals who move at much higher speeds, they must be careful about how they land. Hitting the ground, or even water, at full flight speed would be quite ____11____. Before touching down, they must reduce their ____12____ in order to land safely. Both bats and birds have mastered the skill of landing. In the past it was believed that there was ____13____ difference between bats and birds. This belief was based only on guessing, because for years ____14____ had actually studied how bats move their wings. In recent years, researchers have ____15____ a number of interesting facts about bat flight. Bats are built differently from birds, and their wings include their front and hind limbs (后肢). This makes their limbs work more difficult and they are not very good at flying over longer distances. However, they are much better at ____16____. People can hear certain parts of a whale song, so scientists use special tools to record and study the songs. Over years, they’ve noticed that the songs have changed in pitch. Pitch describes how high or low a sound is. Emma Leroy and a team of scientists now think they know why. They’ve studied more than a million songs from five groups of whales. The songs were recorded in the southern Indian Ocean over a period of seven years. Last fall, the team’s report came out in the magazine Oceans. It tells why the pitch of whale songs has gotten lower: whales aren’t singing as loudly as they used to. ▲   Leroy’s study puts forward two hypotheses (假说). The first is that there are more whales. Starting in 1985, the International Whaling Organization made rules against catching whales. As the whale population has increased, whales have begun to live closer together. And if the whales are closer together, they don’t have to sing loudly to communicate. The study’s second hypothesis is that the pitch of whale songs has dropped because of the weather change. An increase of carbon dioxide (CO₂) has made ocean water more acidic (酸性的), changing its sound carrying result. Now the songs can be heard from farther away, so the whales don’t have to sing loudly. “The increase of CO₂ is good news for whale communication,” Leroy says. “But for the environment, it is not good at all.” More acidic water could be harmful to some ocean life. Leroy says that checking either hypothesis would need more research. “We would need to understand and how the blue whales sing the song,” she says. But that would mean studying each single whale. It’s hard to do and also very expensive. Scientists will continue to study whale songs and each study adds to people’s understanding. “Maybe our hypotheses will be checked in 10 years.” Leroy says.“Science is often a journey.” 24. Which of the following sentences can be put in the ________ in Paragraph 3? A But do people know how often whales sing songs? B. Then what might happen to the scientists? C. So why are whales singing more softly? D. And when do whales start to move in different places? 25. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 5 refer to? A. The change of whale population. B. The increase of CO₂. C. The increase of acidic water. D. The change of whale communication. 26. What can we infer from the passage? A. Whale communication has a bad influence on life. B. Whales sing loudly because of their increasing population. C. Weather change influences how far the songs can be heard. D. Scientists have checked the exact reasons why whales communicate. 27. What does the passage mainly talk about? A. How Leroy and her team wrote the report. B. How the ocean was polluted. C. Why the whale population increases. D. Why the sound of whale changes. 【答案】24. C 25. B 26. C 27. 根据“It tells why the pitch of whale songs has gotten lower: whales aren’t singing as loudly as they used to.”以及“Leroy’s study puts forward two hypotheses (假说). The first is that there are more...to sing loudly to communicate.”可知,提到鲸鱼歌声的音调降低是因为它们不再像以前那样大声唱歌,紧接着提出两个假说解释原因。故选项C“为何鲸鱼唱得更轻柔?”符合。故选C。 【25题详解】 词义猜测题。根据“ ‘The increase of CO₂ is good news for whale communication,’ Leroy says. ‘But for the environment, it is not good at all.’ ”可知,CO₂的增加导致海水酸化,Leroy认为这对鲸鱼交流是好事,但对环境不利。故“it”指代前文的“CO₂的增加”。故选B。 【26题详解】 推理判断题。根据“The study’s second hypothesis is that the pitch of whale songs has dropped because of the weather change. An increase of carbon dioxide (CO₂) has made ocean water more acidic (酸性的), changing its sound carrying result. Now the songs can be heard from farther away, so the whales don’t have to sing loudly.” D。 C The lantern fair in Zigong, Southwest China’s Sichuanprovince, which boasts a history of more than 1,000 years, is once again attracting visitors with its dazzling lanterns. Coveringan area of nearly 37 hectares (公顷), the 30th International Lantern Show kicked off in Zigong on February 2nd and received around 450,000 visitors during the Spring Festival holiday from February 10th to 17th. To mark the Year of the Dragon, many of the lanterns at the show feature the Chinese sign of the zodiac (生肖), but there are also a wide variety of other lantern designs to meet different needs. Visitors who prefer traditional lanterns can find lanterns with flowers and birds, legendary figures, and landscapes, while lanterns with modern topics such as cartoon characters, cultural trends and online games are gaining popularity among young people. In addition to the extremely beautiful things made by hand modern technologies such as 3D printing and artificial intelligence (AI) have also been used to make the lanterns more vivid and wonderful. The lantern show is also accepting the idea of environmental protection. For example, a dragon lantern measuring over 200 meters long was made by bundling together some 200,000 used water bottles. A set of lanterns recreating the famous Chinese statue “Bronze Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow” from the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD) was created by using 21 different kinds of waste materials, including tires, leather and plastics to form its decorations (装饰). This year’s show received more than 3,000 children’s artworks from around the world. Some of the art pieces were turned into lanterns by skilled artisans. The 30th International Lantern Show will run until July 30th. The sets of lanterns will be updated to keep up with other traditional Chinese festivals, such as the Qingming FestIval and the Dragon Boat Festival. Visitors can also enjoy folk arts, and Chinese music performances during their lantern-viewing tours. 28. How does the writer develop the idea in Paragraph 1? A. By listing numbers. B. By telling a story. C. By comparing differences. D. By making an example. 29. How many topics of the lantern show are mentioned in Paragraph 2? A. Six. B. Seven. C. Eight. D. Nine. 30. How does the lantern show express the idea of environmental protection? A. By making large lanterns. B. By using the modern technologies. C. By using waste materials. D. By recreating the famous Chinese statue. 31. What is the purpose of writing the passage? A. To introduce the Lantern fair in Zigong. B. To suggest we need to protect the environment. C. To show the importance of the Year of the Dragon. D. To tell the visitors to watch the show during other festivals. 【答案】28. A 29. B 30. C 31. A set of lanterns recreating the famous Chinese statue ‘Bronze Galloping Horse Treading on a Flying Swallow’ from the Eastern Han Dynasty (25-220 AD) was created by using 21 different kinds of waste materials, including tires, leather and plastics to form its decorations (装饰).” A。 D It was weeks before we heard from Squire Trelawney again. All this time, I had lived at the doctor’s, my mind full of ideas about what the coming voyage (a long journey on a ship) might bring. I was so excited that I wasn’t too bothered about being away from home and my mother. The letter from Squire Trelawney came when Dr. Livesey was in London, arranged (安排) for a doctor to take over his practice while he was away. Since the letter was addressed to both the doctor and me, I opened it nervously, and read the following: Old Anchor Inn, Bristol March 1st, 17 Dear Livesey, All is ready! My man Blandly has found us a beautiful ship, the Hispaniola. And we’ve had no trouble gathering together an excellent crew of men. Once words spread about our plan to look for treasure, many people had all sorts of interest in the voyage. Our luckiest find was the cook, Long John Silver. He’s a one-legged man that runs an inn (小旅馆) here, and knows all the best seamen around. It was through him that we found most of our crew. He wished to join our voyage as well, and sad that, although he had only one leg, he could make up for it with his cooking; so I hired the poor man. And now you and Jim should come to Bristol as soon as possible. The two of you are all we need to complete our crew. —Trelawney My happiness was now complete. I sent a message to London to inform Dr. Livesey of the news, and then prepared my bags that night. In the morning, I boarded with Tom Redruth, one of the Squire’s servants responsible for watching over me, and we headed for Bristol. 32. Why did “I” feel so excited before receiving the letter from Squire Trelawney? A. Because there was no one to bother “me”. B. Because “I” was expecting the coming voyage. C. Because “I” had never lived at the doctor’s before. D. Because “I” wanted to see the home and “my” mother. 33. Which of the following in the dictionary can best explain the underlined word “spread” in the letter? Spread n.[C, U]; v.[V] spread; spread ① To open something that has been folded so that it covers a larger area than before. ② To move your arms, legs, fingers, etc. far apart from each other. ③To be known by or used by more and more people. ④ An increase in the amount or number of something that there is. A. ① B. ② C. ③ D. ④ 34. What can be known about Long John Silver? A. He was the cook with only one leg. B. He ran an inn in order to know more seamen. C. Many other seamen introduced him to Trelawney. D. He was one of the best seamen and wished to join the voyage. 35. In which tone did Trelawney write the letter? A. Rude. B. Joyful. C. Nervous. D. Who says you can’t play with your food? Or, play your food? For the Vegetable Orchestra, vegetables are the start of a whole new kind of music. ②The Vegetable Orchestra (管弦乐队) was started in Vienna, Australia, in 1998 and organizes concerts around the world. Its members play carrots, bell peppers, tomatoes, sweet potatoes and pumpkins, all fresh from local markets. ③The day before a concert, the members will spend the whole day preparing. First, they carefully pick vegetables for their texture (质地), size and shape. All of these influence the sound. Next, they get to work with knives and other tools to cut, carve, and make holes in new instruments from a lot of mixed vegetables—almost 45 kg of them. The end results? The perfect instruments that can play some really fresh sounds. Once the instruments are ready, they are covered with damp cloths to keep them from drying out. ④And then it’s time to play! The orchestra plays their own kind of jazz music. Some of the orchestra’s pieces are old, while others are improvised (即兴创作的), making each concert completely new. What happens to all these vegetable instruments after each concert? They are cut into pieces and cooked into soups for all to enjoy. So a cook and band member is quite needed. ⑤Besides the cook, other members also come from different backgrounds, including musicians, artists, engineers, writers and doctors. They often give classes to teach children and adults how to make their own instruments from vegetables. ⑥Do you want to get a try? How many different sounds can you make in your kitchen? 36. It is a good idea to make recordings of oral history conversations so that they can be kept and listened to in the future. C The lantern fair in Zigong, Southwest China’s Sichuanprovince, which boasts a history of more than 1,000 years, is once again attracting visitors with its dazzling lanterns. In addition to the extremely beautiful things made by hand, modern technologies such as 3D printing and artificial intelligence (AI) have also been used to make the lanterns more vivid and wonderful. B. My man Blandly has found us a beautiful ship the Hispaniola. 32. Oral history means listening to these stories and asking questions of the people who remember them. It is a good idea to make recordings of oral history conversations so that they can be kept and listened to in the future. This can be done with a sound recording device (设备) or an app on a smart phone. As well as historical events that affect a whole country, local events are also important. Examples could include flooding, the new buildings, or a person making a big change or having strong influence on a particular area. Neal Foster, who creates the popular Horrible Histories Live stage shows, thinks oral history is important.“Nothing competes with hearing history from people who went through the experience.
