Roadkill is a common sight to highways and sometimes in cities. It refers to animals being hit by vehicles (车辆). A study in 2023 measured, for the first time, the damage China’s fast-developing road network is having on animals in urban (城市的) areas.
Previously, research in China had focused on roadkill in nature reserves. Li Zhongqiu and his team from Nanjing University’s School of Life Sciences looked at the problem in cities, where roadkill could have an even larger impact.
They chose Nanjing, with over 9,700 kilometers of paved (铺好的) roads, as the study subject. Nine roads, including three national highways, totaling over 224 kilometers, were watched every two weeks for a year.
The team recorded a total of 249 individual (单独的) roadkill cases. Birds accounted for nearly half the total, making them the most susceptible group to roadkill. Cats, dogs and blackbirds were the three most commonly killed animals.
“This may be due to the large number of stray (流浪的) cats and dogs in urban area,” Li said. “Abandoned (被抛弃的) pets are more likely to wander into traffic.” Also, there are many blackbirds in East China that are attracted onto roads by insects like flies, leading to more accidents.
Roadkill incidents (事件) happen more often in November and January, the team found. This maybe because, for some warm-blooded animals, food is harder to find at this time so they have to go out and search for food more.
Roadkill has resulted in the decline (下降) of urban animal populations and “must be taken seriously”, Li said. The researchers also call on policymakers to put forward related traffic regulations (条例) and animal protect rules, such as speed limits and traffic controls.
7. What is the focus of the study conducted by Li Zhongqiu and his team?
A. Damage caused by building highways.
B. Roadkill in urban areas.
C Roadkill in natural reserves.
8. What does the word “susceptible” in Paragraph 4 most likely mean?
A. Unaffected. B. Acceptable. C. Easily influenced.
9. What do researchers suggest doing to reduce roadkill in cities?
A. Increasing the number of traffic lights in rural areas.
B. Setting speed limits and controlling traffic in cities.
C. Sending stray animals back to nature reserves.
10. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Study uncovers influences of roadkill.
B. Rising concerns for nature reserves.
C. Increased awareness for stray animals.

第一节(共5小题:每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
As a young child, I was pretty lazy when it came to doing chores. If my parents asked me to do something, I would do it—not a problem. But I always needed to be told to do things that I could easily see. That undoubtedly annoyed (使厌烦) my parents.
Every Saturday afternoon, my mother drove me to another town for a piano lesson. During my half-hour lesson, she’d rush to the nearby market and buy a week’s food. Considering my mom drove me twelve miles there, twelve miles back, paid for my lesson, and bought me a candy, I should be thankful enough to help her bring the food into the house without being asked. But I didn’t.
With homework weighing heavily on my mind and with “me” still the center of my world, I generally just brought in a small bag and then ran to my room, shut the door and started doing my homework.
Gradually, my “not helping” became a bigger and bigger problem for me because what I learned at school made me realize that I was avoiding responsibility. I wanted to change.
So one Saturday I made a decision. Getting off the car, I didn’t go away directly but helped my mother. I’m sure Mom thanked me that day, but what I remember most is the valuable sense of satisfaction I felt after helping her. Unknown to her, I’d already decided to offer help every Saturday. From that day on, I really did.

【答案】例文
Dear Mike,
How is everything going? This term, our school has offered two labour courses.
In the chores course, we learn how to make traditional food like dumplings and recycle the waste. As a result, we can practice some basic life skills and help protect the environment. And we also have a vegetable-planting course, which aims to help us study plants and know about farming.
As for me, I choose the vegetable-planting course because I want to know more about farming and get close to nature. Under the guidance of our teachers, we purchased seeds, planted, watered and fertilized them, as well as transplanted them to guarantee the survival of vegetables. No pains, no gains. Through the hands-on experience, not only do I gain a sense of achievement, but I also appreciate that labour itself is a kind of enjoyment and a must for our personal growth.
Do you have labor courses? Can you tell me something about them? Looking forward to your reply.
Yours,
Li Hua
