I knew I would not see an actual person named Ellie at Ellie's Eatery because, like most new restaurants these days, Ellie's is a robo-restaurant.
When I walked in, a cute little manager robot appeared, looking rather like a toaster with lively blue eyes.It showed me to a nice table in the back. The menu monitor popped out of my table and showed me pictures of my dining options.I tapped my choices and clicked OK, and the screen slid back down.
I watched as full plates rode the conveyer belts that moved along each aisle(过道) of tables. In just a few minutes, my appetizer stopped at my table, and I took it from the belt.Later, I placed my empty plate back on the conveyer belt, and it was taken away into the kitchen to be cleaned.
I watched the little toaster showing customers to tables while I ate my main course. The food was tasty, but I was starting to feel annoyed because dealing with robots always makes me feel inhuman.Pretty soon, I wanted to talk to someone real, even if it was just a few sentences.
So when my dessert arrived, I took action.I dropped my plate on the floor with a satisfying crash.I was so happy when I saw the manager toaster's shining red eyes—at last, a real live person would arrive!
But instead, a crew of two robots quickly appeared.A robot broom rushed over and started to sweep the pieces of the broken plate into a robot garbage can. They finished and moved back into the kitchen. My plan to get a little reality into Ellie's Eatery failed sadly.I hope the restaurant trend ends soon.I want to deal with people again!

Robots are now not merely the favorite image of science fiction. They are already widely used to perform simple repetitive tasks and in industries where work must be performed in environments hazardous to humans, because it can prevent people from suffering harm or loss.Robots may be equipped with the equivalent(对应物) of human senses such as vision, touch and the ability to sense temperature. Some are even capable of simple decision-making and current robotics research is aimed at inventing robots with a degree of self-sufficiency.
Modern robots are like very young children who are just learning to walk. It's fun to watch them fall over, but deep down we know that if we laugh too hard, they might develop a complex emotion and grow up to start World War Ⅲ.None of humanity's creations inspires such a confusing mix of amazement, admiration and fear.We want robots to make our lives easier and safer, yet we can't quite bring ourselves to trust them. We're crafting them in our own image, yet we are terrified that they'll replace us.
But that fear is no barrier to the field of robotics.Robots have finally grown smart enough and capable enough to make their way out of factories and labs to walk and roll and even leap among us.You may be worried that a robot is going to steal your job.But you may be more likely to work alongside a robot in the near future than have one replace you.The rapidly developing relationship between humans and robots is so complex that it has started its own field, known as human-robot interaction. The challenge is that it's easy to adapt robots to get along with humans—but it's another issue to train humans to get along with machines.
The machines promise to change virtually every aspect of human life, from health care to transportation to work. One thing is clear:The machines have arrived. Now we have to figure out how to handle the responsibility of having invented a new species.

You might think people all over the United States have Wi-Fi—wireless Internet service—and mobile phones. But there is no such service in Green Bank, West Virginia, a tiny town four hours from the US capital, Washington D.C.Fewer than 150 people live in Green Bank, which has two churches, an elementary school and a public library. It is also home to the largest radio telescope in the world.
There is a ban on Wi-Fi in Green Bank, along with anything else that can create electromagnetic(电磁的) waves.Officials say the waves could disturb the signals the telescope receives.
For many Americans a visit to Green Bank is a little like returning to the 1950s.To get there, you must read road signs because there is no GPS service in the town.People can connect with the Internet through telephones, but wireless service is not allowed.
The observatory(天文台) is one of the largest employers in the area. The National Science Foundation(NSF) spends about $8.2 million a year to operate the observatory, telescope and educational center.
Jonah Bauserman is a technician. If he supposes there is a signal that is not allowed in the zone, he drives to the house where the signal is coming from and checks it.But once a week, when the device is cleaned, some banned devices are allowed near it.
People in the town respect the work of the scientists. And they say they are happy to live without Wi-Fi and mobile phones.“You know, instead of sitting here with our phones and other devices, we're out fishing, hunting and going to each other's houses.” Everyone knows each other and communication is almost always face to face.

How to Write Short Stories in English
Study these vital steps below and write your own short stories in English.
Create reasonable, detailed characters.Name your characters.Work in their ages and details about their appearance in fine ways.Don't give us uncertain, shadowy, formless characters. 1 Whether they like them or hate them, feel sorry for them or cheer them on, is up to you, the writer.
2 Decide on which tense you will use for your main story, and stick to that throughout. Many authors use past tense for their stories. If your story is happening in the present moment, you can use present tense. However, when writers write an entire story in present tense, it can be confusing and off-putting for the readers.
Use believable, brief dialogue.Conversation makes your story come alive. It adds depth to your characters and the readers can understand their feelings through what they say. It's important to keep your dialogue as natural-sounding as possible, but at the same time, it has to be brief and add to the meaning of the story. 3
Your story must make complete sense. 4 Then characters must conflict, overcome an obstacle or solve a problem of some sort.Don't make big plot jumps.Don't leave out important details.Make sure your story facts are believable and congruent(一致的).
5 Will you use the first person, or third person expression? Whichever you choose, stick to it throughout. You can't, furthermore, refer to your readers as “you”, and then “we” and then “one”.You have to keep the expression consistent, and use the same pronoun and its variants throughout your story.
A.Use the correct tenses.
B.Edit your story carefully.
C.Keep your point of view consistent.
D.So you should make every word count.
E.Above all, things must happen in your story.
F.Generally, your readers need to relate to them.
G.Both spelling and grammar errors distract from the reading experience.
空格处应解释原因,F项(一般来说,你的读者需要与他们产生共鸣)符合语境,且其中的relate to them和空后的like them or hate them, feel sorry for them or cheer them on相呼应,故选F项。
2.答案 A
