Once upon a time, there lived a farmer who grew very good corn. Each year, he would take part in the state farmers’ fair and win a top award for his corn.
The story of the farmer’s success reached the ears of a reporter who wanted to interview the farmer. While he was learning about the farmer’s growing skills, he found that the farmer shared his best quality seeds (种子) with his neighbors.
“How can you afford to share your best corn seeds with your neighbors when some of them might go to the fair as well?” the reporter asked.
“Why wouldn’t I?” the farmer replied. “The wind picks up pollen (花粉) from the corn and moves it from field to field. If my neighbors grow poor quality corn, cross pollination (授粉) will finally degrade (降低) the quality of my corn too. If I am to grow high quality corn, I must help my neighbors grow good corn too.”
The farmer’s answer made the reporter understand how aware the old farmer was about connections in life.
It is the same with our lives. Those who want to live in peace must help others around them to live in peace too. Those who wish to be loved must first learn to love others too. Those who wish to live well must help others live well too, as the value of our lives has something to do with the lives we touch.

A. was good at growing corn B. gave poor quality corn to his neighbors
C. had no growing skills D. organized the farmers’ fair every year

A long time ago, people were very different from the way we are now. Over time, the human body changes to adapt to (适应) a new way of life. Can we expect the human body to change in the future? For sure. The development of technology is changing how we live. What kind of changes can we expect?
In the future, people will probably be even taller. Most of us now have much better food than people in the past and we grow more. However, our muscles will not be as strong as now because we won’t do a lot of physical work.
We are already using our feet less and our hands more. So we can expect that our legs will get shorter and our feet smaller, and at the same time our fingers will get longer. And our fingers and our eyes will both get better because they’ll have to do more work together.
It’s very possible that people will have four toes, not five. The little toe really isn’t needed any more, so it will probably disappear sometime in the future.
Now, what about the mouth? It’ll get smaller, perhaps, because technology improvement will mean that we don’t need to talk so much, and also because our teeth will get smaller.
Last but not least, people won’t have much hair on their bodies as now, as we don’t need it to keep ourselves warm any more.
Will all these things happen? If so, when? These are questions no one can answer for sure.

A. give some advice B. dig the topic
C. introduce the following parts D. show the writer’s worry

In 1674, I was born on my father’s small farm in Nottinghamshire, England. I was the third of five sons. My childhood was very happy. I liked going to school and learning new things. But I often used to daydream about going to sea.
One day, Father asked, “Lemuel, have you thought about your future? I think you would be a good doctor.”
I wanted to please him, so I said, “Yes, Father. I’ll go to Cambridge University and study medicine.” But as I spoke I was thinking, “At university I can also learn things that will be useful to a sailor.”
After several years of study, I became a doctor. Not long after, I asked my sweetheart, Mary, to marry me. Before long, we had children, a boy and a girl. They gave us great joy. I enjoyed being a doctor for the first few years. But then I became bored, and ideas of travel filled my mind. I imagined going to far-off places and seeing wonderful new things.
“Mary,” I said one day, “I need more adventure in my life. The captain of a ship about to sail has offered me a job as the ship’s doctor. I don’t know how long the journey will lake, but I promise I will return. And when I do, I’ll tell you and the children all about my adventures.”
So in 1699, I set sail on the Antelope from Bristol. That city is a large and very old port (港口) in the southwest of England. The captain was a good man and had sailed a great deal!
“Welcome aboard. Doctor Gulliver,” he said, “First we’ll be sailing down the Atlantic Ocean and around the coast of Africa. Then we’ll sail through the Indian Ocean to the South Seas.” Our journey went well until one morning, somewhere near Tasmania in the South Pacific Ocean.
“I don’t like the look of those clouds,” the captain said, “I think a storm is coming.”
Within an hour, a big storm began. The sea rose in great, angry waves much taller than the Antelope. The wind, now as strong as a hurricane, made a terrible sound.
“The wind is blowing the ship off course!” shouted the captain. “Look out!”

Can you imagine a world without insects? Without ants or flies in your house, it might sound great. However, the results may be out of imagination.
The number of insects has dropped by half in the past few years, according to a British biologist Dave Coulson. You may think small insects are not important. But in fact they are the main part of the species(物种)on Earth.
Insects are indeed on the way to extinction, according to the first review of insect population. The researchers say the main reason for this is the use of pesticides(杀虫剂)because they destroy insects’ living areas. Also, weather change is another important cause.
“Unless we change our ways of producing food, insects will go down the way to extinction in a few years,” the researchers wrote in the review. “This will have huge influences on the planet’s ecosystem(生态系统).”
We need insects to pollinate(授粉)crops. They also break down(分解)dead plants and animals, which can keep the soil healthy. Without insects, many animals would have nothing to eat and die of hunger. Then, the ecosystem would be off balance.
“If the number of insect species keep dropping, this will have bad influences on both Earth’s ecosystem and the survival of us humans,” said one of the writers of the review.
“The first step to stop this is to let more people understand the values of the natural world,” he suggests. “The best place to start is from our children, who should realize environmental protection from an early age.”

A. pollution B. death C. harm D. protection

You arrive at the mall anxious to buy your favorite CD or the coolest computer game. Nothing will stop you, not even the price—even if you don’t have enough money. Mom or Dad will use a credit card (信用卡) to pay. But wait! Is using a credit card really that simple? There are some things you should know about using credit cards before you go shopping.
___23___ Credit card companies lend you money, which you are expected to pay back. They don’t lend you money just to be nice, however. In fact, they make billions of dollars this way.
You spend 45 dollars buying a pair of jeans on a credit card. Then about a month later, the credit card company sends you a bill for 45 dollars. ___24___ But what if you can’t pay the whole bill? Usually, you are allowed to pay part of it. Let’s say you pay $10 the first month. Now the credit card company begins to get money from you. They charge extra money, called interest (利息), on whatever part of the money you didn’t pay.
Now the $35 you still have on your bill begins to grow. Even if you don’t buy anything more, by the time you get your bill the following month, you will have more than $35 to pay back. And every day, interest keeps adding ups. ___25___
But the good news is that a credit card is convenient. ___26___ Besides, the credit card companies also offer extra services. For example, if something you bought online with your card stops working in a short time, the company may give your money back.
___27___ They spend more money than they can afford to pay back. Knowing how to use credit cards wisely will be necessary and help you to be a smart shopper.

例文
Travelling
Travelling is a wonderful activity. When you feel tired from studying, visiting beautiful places allows you to enjoy nature’s beauty. You can breathe fresh air, meet different people, and even make new friends. Spending time with friends while travelling helps you take care of each other, which is good for both your body and mind.
However, travelling sometimes brings challenges. For example, the weather might change suddenly—sunny mornings could turn into rainy afternoons. But don’t worry! With proper preparation, these problems can be solved. Before travelling, always check the weather forecast and pack necessary items like umbrellas or jackets. During the trip, follow safety rules: don’t litter, stay away from dangerous areas, and keep your belongings safe. In short, travelling opens our eyes to the world’s wonders and teaches us to adapt.
As long as we plan wisely, it will always be an unforgettable experience!

11. From the story, we know that the farmer ________.
A. was good at growing corn B. gave poor quality corn to his neighbors
C. had no growing skills D. organized the farmers’ fair every year
12. The farmer’s corn grew well partly because ________.
A. his neighbors also grew good corn B. his neighbors gave him the best seeds

C Helping others is good for ourselves. D. Loving others makes life more colorful.
B
14. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 1 is to ________.
A. give some advice B. dig the topic
C. introduce the following parts D. show the writer’s worry
15. Which of the body parts might get smaller according to the passage?

C. Unknown questions. D. Technology improvement.

In 1674 I was born on my father’s small farm in Nottinghamshire, England.
“Look out!”
—Adapted from Gulliver’s Travels

20. The underlined word “extinction” means “________”.
A. pollution B. death C. harm D. protection
21. Paragraph 5 is mainly about ________.
A. the reason for producing food B. the problem of animals and plants
C. the way to keep soil healthy D. the importance of insects
22. From the passage, we can know ________.
A. insects may destroy the balance of the ecosystem
B. ants and flies are the main part of the species on Earth
C. humans’ actions influence the number of insects
D. weather change has little influence on insects

A. It is sometimes the only way to pay when you shop over the Internet.
B. You’d better borrow money from friends instead of using a credit card.
C. Using a credit card is a way of borrowing money to buy things.
D. Some people get themselves in trouble with credit cards.
