Read about Jack.
B
Jack is an inventor. He sees a problem and comes up with a way to solve it, just like most inventors do. But Jack is not your typical inventor. When he was 15, not even out of high school yet, he did what most people never do. When a close family friend passed away due to pancreatic cancer, he decided to try to find a way to detect cancer earlier and to increase chances of survival. In Jack’s words, “The fact that a hundred people die every day from the disease motivates me to not only work on my project, but also raise awareness of the need for more funding for research and for open access so more people can learn and innovate.”
69
Reading
Challenge
Read about Jack.
B
How did Jack find a way to do it? He was able to create a tool, a stick-like sensor, that detects an increase of protein. This increase in protein is related to the presence of certain cancers in their early stages. The earlier it is caught, the better the chance for a cure. This tool works for not only pancreatic cancer, which Jack’s family friend passed away from, but also lung and ovarian cancer. The test takes about five minutes and only costs three cents to make.
70
Reading
Challenge
Read about Jack.
B
Jack holds an international patent on his cancer detecting device and hopes that it will be available in the next ten years. He thinks the same detection method he invented could be applied to almost any disease. When asked what advice he would give to other people who want to make a difference, he said, “If I could have people do one thing, it would be to believe in the power of citizen scientists to innovate solutions to problems in their health and environment.”
