Do flying cars only exist in dreams of a far-off future? Well, the future may be closer than you think. Let’s take a look at some modes of transport that we could be using in the future.
Flying taxi
Slovakian engineering company AeroMobil has designed the world’s first 4-seater flying taxi. AeroMobil’s AM Next is a hybrid - half supercar, half lightweight aircraft. It’s able to transform between the two modes of transport in fewer than 3 minutes as its wings move into the appropriate positions. It is expected to be released in 2028 and will be able to fly a distance of up to 500 miles (about 800 kilometers) between major cities.
Gyroscopic transport
Gyroscopic (陀螺的) transport is a revolutionary new mode of transport that is being planned. It is the use of large pods supported by flexible legs that transport passengers over existing roads. These legs can adjust their length according to traffic demands and to allow passengers to board. The whole structure is balanced on gyroscopes, which allows the main pod to maintain its orientation while moving.
One of the best elements of this mode of transport is that it can operate over existing infrastructure. Dahir Insaat, a company looking to find the future of transportation, has already built a model system that could one day be used in cities, according to The Times of India.
Hyperloop
Hyperloop (超级高铁) has created a lot of excitement recently and received backing from many influential people in the tech world. Elon Musk, CEO of Space X, is one of the main proponents (支持者) of the hyperloop. He has suggested it could ease traffic in Los Angeles, US.
The hyperloop is an ultra-high-speed public transportation system in which passengers travel in autonomous electric pods at about 965 kilometers per hour, according to the website of Musk’s tunnel excavation (挖掘) firm, Boring Company. Using pressurized (密封) underground tunnels, people, goods and even vehicles can travel quickly. “You just drive on, and the pod departs,” Musk told Bloomberg Businessweek.
Virgin Hyperloop, a US transport technology company, conducted its first human trials of a hyperloop system in November 2020. The hyperloop system managed to reach speeds of up to 172km/h, according to The Guardian. The hyperloop is set to be introduced in various cities all across the world in the near future.
36. What do we know about AeroMobil’s AM Next?
A. It will be the world’s first flying car.
B. It could be in use in just 2 years’ time.
C. It can fly a maximum of 800 miles each trip.
D. It can switch between modes within 3 minutes.
37. What is an advantage of gyroscopic transport?
A. It can travel either above or below ground.
B. It can travel independent of traffic flow on the roads.
C. It’s quicker and cheaper to build than other vehicles.
D. It can hold more passengers than other forms of transport.
38. What is Elon Musk’s attitude toward the hyperloop?
A. Doubtful. B. Worried. C. Critical. D. Positive.
39. According to the passage, which company has conducted the first human trials of a hyperloop system?
A. Boring Company. B. Virgin Hyperloop.
C. Space X. D. Dahir Insaat.
40. What potential advantage of the hyperloop compared to traditional modes of transportation can be inferred from the passage?
A. Faster travel speeds. B. Longer travel distances.
C. Reduced energy consumption. D. Lower operational costs.

Every November, as Thanksgiving Day approaches, one memory comes to my mind. At my big Turkish family’s get-togethers, baklava (果仁蜜饼) is the norm at the dessert table. There’s rolled baklava, nut-filled baklava and chocolate-dipped baklava.
One year, though, back when I was in high school, my cousin Johnny decided to change things up a bit. He showed up at my parents’ house for Thanksgiving with two items that had never been served before - apple pie and a can of cream.
Those two items caused one of the biggest arguments. I distinctly remember my mom and aunts whispering in the kitchen.
“Apple pie?” one of my aunts said. “How to do with this?”
I can still recall my mom’s puzzled expression at it all. If there’s one thing in this world my mom distrusts, it’s fruit-filled desserts, a no-no in our cuisine culture. “Why would you bake fruits into a dessert when you can cat them fresh?” she often says.
The cream only made things worse. My mom didn’t want to hurt Johnny’s feelings. In a true act of love, she put the pie out on the dining room table, accompanied by the cream. It went mostly untouched.
Nowadays, things are different. We actually have pie at Thanksgiving - my mom regularly makes pie (the fear of fruit-filled sweets continues, but desserts topped with fruits or nuts have been given the okay). We still laugh about the drama caused by Johnny’s apple pie. I’ll never forget it. It wasn’t just about the pie for me. Growing up, I: sometimes felt like an outsider because of my culture. That Thanksgiving, though, was one of the first times I realized that my family’s oddness was actually a good thing. It’s what made us. What about you? Which Thanksgiving sticks out as your most memorable one?
41. The purpose of the first paragraph is to introduce ______.
A. the unique family tradition B. different kinds of baklava
C. the background of the story D. the customs of Thanksgiving Day
42. Johnny’s apple pie ______.

C. Humorous and caring. D. Considerate and flexible.
44. What does the underlines word “oddness” in the last paragraph mean?

B. The author is aware of the importance of customs.

Teens and younger children are reading a lot less for fun, according to, a Common Sense Media report published Monday.
While the decline over the past decade is steep for teen readers, some data in the report shows that reading remains a big part of many children’s lives, and indicates how parents might help encourage more reading.
According to the report’s key findings, “the proportion (比例) who say they ‘hardly ever’ read for fun has gone from 8 percent of 13-year-olds and 9 percent of 17-year-olds in 1984 to 22 percent and 27 percent respectively today.”
The report data shows that pleasure reading levels for younger children, ages 2-8, remain largely the same. But the amount of time spent in reading each session has declined, from closer to an hour or more to closer to a half hour per session.
When it comes to technology and reading, the report does little to counsel parents looking for data about the effect of e-readers and tablets on reading. It does point out that many parents still limit electronic reading, mainly due to concerns about increased screen time. The most hopeful data shared in the report shows clear evidence of parents serving as examples and important guides for their kids when it comes to reading. Data shows that kids and teens who do read frequently, compared to infrequent readers, have more books in the home, more books purchased for them, parents who read more often, and parents who set aside time for them to read.
As the end of school approaches, and school vacation reading lists loom (逼近) ahead, parents might take this chance to step in and make their own summer reading list and plan a family trip to the library or bookstore.
46. What is the Common Sense Media report probably about?
A. Children’s reading habits.
B. Quality of children’s books.
C. Children’s after-class activities.
D. Parent-child relationships.
47. Where can you find the data that best supports “children are reading a lot less for fun”?
A. In Paragraph 2. B. In Paragraph 3.
C. In Paragraph 4. D. In Paragraph 5.
48. Why do many parents limit electronic reading?
A. E-books are of poor quality.
B. It could be a waste of time.
C. It may harm children’s health.
D. E-readers are expensive.
49. How should parents encourage their children to read more?
A. Act as role models for them.
B. Ask them to write book reports.
C. Set up reading groups for them.
D. Talk with their reading class teachers.
50. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. The decline of reading among teenagers and its causes.
B. Strategies for parents to encourage their children to read more.
C. The impact of technology on children’s reading habits.
D. A report revealing reading habits of children and teenagers.
D
There’s a popular saying that if only one voice is allowed to exist; then that one voice must be lie. This quote couldn’t be more relevant now, as many businesses and platforms are using shady practices to silence negative feedback and ensure only those voices benefiting them remain. This practice is so-called “artificial review boosting”, and has been influencing objectivity in reviews ever since.
Its origin dates back to the 20th century when businesses would hand out free samples to obtain a better reputation. However, the practice rises to a new extreme with the emergence of e-commerce platforms. Many online businesses do whatever it takes to ensure high-rating scores, either through giving bonuses and rewards to customers who leave a good review or through bothering and threatening those who leave a negative one. This behavior is not only morally corrupt but also illegal, and it is absurd that many consumers feel they can’t leave negative feedback out of fear that businesses will cause troubles.
It’s apparent that this problem is getting out of hand, but how can we fix it? Regulator intervention would certainly help. There should be a tougher crackdown on illegal practices, and e-commerce platforms should be required to protect the privacy of their users. Nevertheless, this is just a small part of the changes needed, as the rating system as a whole needs restructuring. Because this system rewards dishonest sellers rather than those selling quality products, and e-commerce platforms, with their profits unaffected, turn a blind eye to its faults.
Against all odds, honest feedback has persisted and people who voice their true opinions still exist, but they are becoming rarer. There’s an old saying that if you put a frog in boiling water, it will leap out, but if you cook the frog slowly in warm water, it won’t notice being cooked alive. We consumers are just like frogs — it’s easy for us to fight together against terrible acts robbing our freedom, but we often ignore when the same freedom is gradually taken from us. There will be no grand coup de grace (致命一击) that ends honest feedback. Companies will just let it fade away slowly but we mustn’t allow that to happen because consumers play a more important role in keeping honest feedback.
51. Why does the author quote a saying in the first paragraph?
A. To define artificial review boosting.
B. To praise businesses and platforms.
C. To lead in the discussion of a social phenomenon.
D. To contrast negative feedback and positive feedback.
52. How did businesses ensure a good reputation in the 20th century?
A. By giving coupons.
B. By rewarding customers.
C. By threatening customers.
D. By giving samples away.
53 Which of the following practices is mentioned as a way businesses use to boost their reviews artificially?
A. Giving rewards to customers who leave positive reviews.
B. Providing free samples to gain a better reputation.
C. Running advertising campaigns to increase visibility.
D. Offering discounts to frequent customers.
54. Who plays the most important role in keeping honest feedback according to the passage?
A. The regulator. B. E-commerce platforms.
C. Sellers. D. Consumers.
55. What’s the author’s attitude toward “artificial review boosting”?
A. Supportive. B. Skeptical. C. Negative. D. Neutral.

Putting down the book I was reading, I turned to my mum Phyllis.
“Next year, when I go to high school...,” I started, thinking of all the novels I’d soon be devouring. But before I could finish my sentence, Mum cut me off.
“There will be no high school,” she said. “We don’t have money for uniforms or school shoes or books.”
It was 1963; I was 12 and had spent the whole of primary school not wearing any shoes, but I dreamed of being a teacher. My family were very poor and my three older siblings hadn’t gone on to high school. Two of them had started work and my older sister stayed home to help mum look after the younger kids. Two weeks before I turned 13, I started cutting threads off shirts in a clothing factory where I met George and later we married.
In time, we had our three kids Darcy, Georgina and Kelly. George found work on cattle stations so we moved to the outback in Western Queensland. I taught our three kids during their primary school years and that scratched my teaching itch a little, but the desire to study more never left me.
“When we retire, I want to go to university,” I told George.
I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it. After 40 years in the outback, we retired in 2015 and I seized my chance. At the age of 66, I enrolled in a program with the University of the Sunshine Coast called the Tertiary Preparation Pathway which helped mature students prepare for university.
Next, I enrolled in a BA majoring in English. Walking onto campus that first day in February 2017, it was clear I was the oldest student there but that didn’t put me off in the slightest. My biggest challenge wasn’t the course work; it was the technology. My grandchildren constantly sent me encouraging messages saying, “We’re so proud of you, Granny” or asking how I was doing.
At last, I passed all my subjects with flying colours and when I was invited to graduate, I cried. I couldn’t believe I’d done it. Wearing my black robe and hat, I marched in to Johnny Farnham’s The Voice. I’ll never forget that feeling, waiting in the wings backstage for the Dean to call my name.“This is a wonderful achievement,” he told me as he handed my degree. I couldn’t agree more.

A. ruined the festival atmosphere B. challenged family traditions
C. resulted in a family quarrel D. contributed to a heavy meal
43. Which of the following is the best description the author’s mom?
A. Serious and honest. B. Generous and strict.
C. Humorous and caring. D. Considerate and flexible.
44. What does the underlines word “oddness” in the last paragraph mean?
A. Strangeness. B. Chance. C. Culture. D. Habit.
45. What does the underlined sentence imply in the last paragraph?
A. The author is at ease with his family members.
B. The author is aware of the importance of customs.
C. Cuisine culture helps shape our identity.
D. Culture shocks make a harmonious family.
C 42. B 43. D 44. A 45. C
根据第一段“Every November, as Thanksgiving Day approaches, one memory comes to my mind. At my big Turkish family’s get-togethers, baklava (果仁蜜饼) is the norm at the dessert table. There’s rolled baklava, nut-filled baklava and chocolate-dipped baklava. (每年11月,随着感恩节的临近,一段记忆浮现在我的脑海里。在我的土耳其大家庭聚会上,果仁蜜饼是甜点桌上的标配。有卷果仁蜜饼、坚果果仁蜜饼和巧克力果仁蜜饼。)”可知,作者在开篇讲述一段记忆浮现在我的脑海里,即要讲述一段回忆,因此第一段的目的是介绍接下来的故事回忆的背景。故选C。
【42题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Those two items caused one of the biggest arguments. I distinctly remember my mom and aunts whispering in the kitchen. (这两点引起了最大的争论之一。我清楚地记得妈妈和阿姨们在厨房里的窃窃私语。)”可知,Johnny的带来苹果派不符合我们的感恩节传统,所以引起争议。故选B。
【43题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“My mom didn’t want to hurt Johnny’s feelings. In a true act of love, she put the pie out on the dining room table, accompanied by the cream. It went mostly untouched. (我妈妈不想伤害约翰尼的感情。出于真正的爱,她把派和奶油一起放在餐桌上。它基本上没有受到影响。)”可知,妈妈考虑到Johnny的感受,把苹果派放在餐桌上,因为妈妈灵活的处理方式,我们的感恩节也并未收到影响。由此推断妈妈是一个善解人意并且思维灵活的人。故选D。
【44题详解】
词句猜测题。根据最后一段“We actually have pie at Thanksgiving—my mom regularly makes pie (the fear of fruit-filled sweets continues, but desserts topped with fruits or nuts have been given the okay). (事实上,我们在感恩节会吃馅饼——我妈妈经常做馅饼(对水果馅的甜食的恐惧仍然存在,但水果或坚果馅的甜点已经被允许了)。)”可知,我们通常在感恩节吃馅饼,但这次却打破惯例接受了Johnny的苹果派,这是一件令人费解的事,但我们对苹果派的接纳意味着我们接纳善意,这是一件美好的事情。由此推断划线单词含义是“奇怪”。故选A。
根据最后一段“It wasn’t just about the pie for me. Growing up, I: sometimes felt like an outsider because of my culture. That Thanksgiving, though, was one of the first times I realized that my family’s oddness was actually a good thing. (这不仅仅是因为那块派。成长过程中,我有时因为自己的文化背景而感到自己是个局外人。然而,那个感恩节是我第一次意识到,我家的独特之处其实是一件好事。)”可知,这种饮食文化差异正是构成他们家庭特点的一部分,也是他们家庭独特性的体现,所以划线句意思是这就是我们的特点,暗含的意思是饮食文化有助于塑造我们的身份。故选C。

53. Which of the following practices is mentioned as a way businesses use to boost their reviews artificially?
A. Supportive. B. Skeptical. C. Negative. D. Neutral.
C 52. D 53. A 54. D 55. C
根据第一段“There’s a popular saying that if only one voice is allowed to exist; then that one voice must be lie. This quote couldn’t be more relevant now, as many businesses and platforms are using shady practices to silence negative feedback and ensure only those voices benefiting them remain.(有一句流行语说,如果只允许一个声音存在;那么那个声音一定是谎言。这句话现在再贴切不过了,因为许多企业和平台正在使用不正当的手段来压制负面反馈,确保只有那些对他们有利的声音存在。)”可知,作者在第一段引用一句谚语是为了引出关于一些企业和平台使用不正当手段来压制负面反馈的社会现象的讨论。故选C项。
【52题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Its origin dates back to the 20th century when businesses would hand out free samples to obtain a better reputation.(它的起源可以追溯到20世纪,当时企业会分发免费样品以获得更好的声誉。)”

根据最后一段“We consumers are just like frogs—it’s easy for us to fight together against terrible acts robbing our freedom, but we often ignore when the same freedom is gradually taken from us. There will be no grand coup de grace (致命一击) that ends honest feedback. Companies will just let it fade away slowly but we mustn’t allow that to happen because consumers play a more important role in keeping honest feedback.(我们消费者就像青蛙一样——我们一起反抗剥夺我们自由的可怕行为很容易,但当同样的自由逐渐被剥夺时,我们常常视而不见。不会有任何致命一击来终结诚实的反馈。公司只会让它慢慢消失,但我们绝不能允许这种情况发生,因为消费者在保持诚实的反馈方面发挥着更重要的作用。)”可知,消费者在保持诚实的反馈方面发挥着更重要的作用。故选D项。
【55题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“This practice is so-called “artificial review boosting”, and has been influencing objectivity in reviews ever since.(这种做法被称为“人工提升评价”,并且自那时起就一直影响着评价的客观性。)”可知,作者认为这种做法影响着评价的客观性,再根据最后一段“Companies will just let it fade away slowly but we mustn’t allow that to happen because consumers play a more important role in keeping honest feedback.(公司只会让它慢慢消失,但我们绝不能允许这种情况发生,因为消费者在保持诚实的反馈方面发挥着更重要的作用。)”

56. Why couldn’t the author go to high school? (no more than 15 words)
______________________________________________________________________________________
57. What is the meaning of the underlined word “with flying colours” in the last paragraph? (No more than 1 word)

根据第三段““There will be no high school,” she said. “We don’t have money for uniforms or school shoes or books.” (“不会有高中,”她说。“我们没钱买校服、鞋或书。”)”可知,作者不能上高中是因为他们没钱买校服,鞋或书,即他们很穷。故答案为:Because her family didn’t have money for uniforms, school shoes or books. /Because her family was poor.
根据划线单词的下文“and when I was invited to graduate, I cried. I couldn’t believe I’d done it. (当我被邀请毕业时,我哭了。我简直不敢相信我做到了。)”以及““This is a wonderful achievement,” he told me as he handed my degree. (“这是一项了不起的成就,”他在递给我学位证书时对我说。)”可知,我被邀请毕业,并得到了校长的认可,由此推断我成功通过考试,因此划线单词的含义是“成功地”。故答案为:Successfully.
【58题详解】
考查细节理解。根据第五段“I taught our three kids during their primary school years and that scratched my teaching itch a little, but the desire to study more never left me. (我在孩子们上小学的那几年里教他们,这多少满足了我一点教学的愿望,但我渴望继续学习的热情从未减退。)”可知,当作者搬到西昆士兰的内陆时,因为需要教三个上小学的孩子,所以自己通过多学习来教孩子学习。故答案为:By teaching her three kids during their primary school years.
根据第六段“At the age of 66, I enrolled in a program with the University of the Sunshine Coast called the Tertiary Preparation Pathway which helped mature students prepare for university. (66岁那年,我报名参加了阳光海岸大学的“高等教育准备课程”项目,该项目旨在帮助成熟学生为进入大学做好准备。)”可知,作者在阳光海岸大学报考了高等教育预备课程,这个项目可以帮助成熟的学生为大学做准备。故答案为:She enrolled in the Tertiary Preparation Pathway helping mature students prepare for university.
根据第三段““There will be no high school,” she said. “We don’t have money for uniforms or school shoes or books.” (“不会有高中,”她说。“我们没钱买校服、鞋或书。”)”及最后一段“At last, I passed all my subjects with flying colours and when I was invited to graduate, I cried. I couldn’t believe I’d done it. (最后,我以优异的成绩通过了所有科目,当我被邀请毕业时,我哭了。我简直不敢相信我做到了。)”可知,作者小时候因为贫穷而不能继续求学,但自己并未放弃,而是持续学习,最终大学成功毕业的故事。这个故事教会了我们,我们永远不要放弃梦想,要坚持梦想并为之努力,直至梦想成真。或虽然作者面临各种挑战,因为贫穷不能接受教育,但并未停止学习,从未放弃梦想。故答案为: (Open) We should keep up with our dream and try to make it one day. /The author faced challenges, including poverty and lack of education, but she never gave up on her dream.
