Unit 3Could you please clean your room?
Most children don’t enjoy doing chores. They like playing computer games rather than cleaning the rooms. But in Australia, Jim and Robert’s mother, Mrs. Black, has good and proper methods to get their children to do housework.
Here is an example.
“Mom, have you worked out next week’s chores? Let Jim and me choose the cards. I can’t wait. It’s fun! ”
When Robert shouted out, his mother had already put all the cards on their big table. On the cards, there are some words like these, “sweep the floor, clean your bedroom, help mom cook, wash vegetables, make beds, feed the fish, cut the wood, clean the bathroom” and many others, Jim and Robert chose two cards for each day from Monday to Friday. Then they would hang them on the weekday task board. Jim likes to clean the bathroom, so he picked up the card “clean the bathroom”. Robert loves to make the bed so he picked up his favorite card. Jim again picked up “wash vegetables” and Robert chose “feed the fish”. Soon the two boys were happy to take away all the cards.
To help the children do chores, their mother thought hard and figure out this idea. Of course, the parents did the chores at weekends and left Jim and Robert two days free.

“Time to wake up!” I pull the pillow over my head. It isn’t time to wake up already, is it?
“Come on, get out of bed,” says Dad. “I need your sheets.” Oh, right. It’s Saturday. Laundry day. Dad has a new idea. He doesn’t use the dryer anymore, at least in summer. Instead, I have to hang all the laundry on a clothesline in the backyard. It seems like a lot of work. And it means I can’t sleep in on Saturday.
Dad gets the washing started early. That way all the clothes can dry by the end of the day. “Up,” says Dad as he starts pulling the sheets off the bed. I drop off the bed onto the floor. “Go hang these!” Dad drops a wet sheet on me. It’s so cold! What a way to wake up!
After I hang up the sheet, I come inside and find Dad in the kitchen. He’s made pancakes. Dad sits down across from me. “Why so sad?” “Stupid laundry,” I said. “It takes forever!” “Well, you know we have to do laundry, right?” “Yup.” “And you realize that I collect the laundry, wash it, take it off the line, fold it, and put it away?” I am starting to feel guilty. “And you have to help out around here, right?” “I know, Dad. I also know that by hanging the laundry instead of using the dryer, we can save more energy. And that means we spend less and pollute less.” Dad is glad that I remember all that.
I’m quiet for a minute. I think I have to stop complaining(抱怨)about hanging the rest of the laundry.

I have three children and I make them do housework. However, my mother-in-law (婆婆) doesn’t agree with me. She thinks I’m too harsh. In her opinion, parents shouldn’t be too strict with children. It is adults’ job to do housework.
I think our family is made up of five family numbers. No one in the family is more important than others, so each member should help with chores. I don’t ask my children to do the same chores, because their ages are different.
At the end of the day, after they finish playing with their toys, I ask them to put the toys away. If they don’t, they will have to say goodbye to their toys. I expect my children to set the table at night and help fold their own clothes. I don’t think I’m asking too much.
I know they are tired after a long day’s study at school, but that’s life—harsh but real. I don’t want to pay them for doing some chores. They live in the house, so they should help out with some things in the house. No one is going to pay them for cleaning up their rooms later in life and I’m not about to start doing it now.
Some parents protect their children too much from anything unpleasant (使人不愉快的) and make their children’s lives too comfortable and safe, but I’m not interested in that way. I hope my children are able to look after themselves and can be independent early.

Many parents make their children do chores around the house. For some families, teaching children what to do and how to do chores is easy. But in other families, getting children to do some housework can be a very big problem.
