The best museums in Washington, D. C.
Visiting the best museums in D. C. can get a bit overwhelming, and we’re here to guide you to the galleries and spaces you can’t miss — whether you’re into modern art, pop culture, African American history or old nuclear missiles. Trust us, there’s something for you.
National Museum of African American History and Culture
The most iconic museum in D. C., the National Museum of African American History and Culture, has eight floors of fascinating historical exhibits. Here, you’ll find tributes to historical figures, moments, and events that have shaped America’s past and present day.
National Museum of African Art
The museum opened in 1987, and its primary focus is ancient and contemporary work from sub-Saharan Africa. The museum draws visitors into different aspects of African art and culture. The rich ceremonial garb and textiles, including blankets made in Mali and embroidered hunters’ shirts, are a must-see.
National Museum of Natural History
It is iconic on the Mall. The museum boasts longtime favorites like the Hope Diamond, which has drawn crowds for over sixty years, and state-of-the-art exhibits like the Hall of North American Mammals. The recently renovated Hall of Fossils is a must-see — visitors may feel as if they’ve traveled back in time. But don’t worry, these dinosaurs don’t bite. Dinosaur fossils are posed interacting with each other, even engaged in life-and-death battles.
Smithsonian American Art Museum/ National Portrait Gallery
The National Portrait Gallery and American Art Museum take up two sides of the same interconnected building. Among the most notable portraits are Gilbert Stuart’s seminal “Lansdowne” portrait of George Washington and Andy Warhol’s iconic Marilyn. The Portrait Gallery houses the only complete collection of the U. S. Presidents’ portraits, while the American Art Museum houses prominent works by American artists, including Edward Hopper and Georgia O’Keefe.

“There is no way I can live out of a suitcase!” I thought as we packed up our home in Venice, Italy. At fourteen years old, I couldn’t imagine leaving my friends, school, and all my “stuff” behind to travel the world full-time with my family.
At the time, we were all going in different directions - my sister and I were stressed and focused on school and were rarely home and my parents were focused on work. It felt like we never saw each other even though we lived under the same roof.
That was when my mom had the idea of dropping everything to travel the world and reconnect as a family. Although I absolutely loved the idea of traveling the world freely, I couldn’t imagine leaving my life behind.
To my surprise, during the travel, we have learned the most important moments in life aren’t when we get new gifts or things, but when we live happy moments with our family and friends. We know now that experiences are the best treasures.
As we travel, we barely carry anything with us except the essential things like clothes and toiletries (洗漱用品). We each carry a backpack and all five of us share two suitcases for clothes. After buying new souvenirs or new clothes, we give some of our old things away to people in need.
At the beginning, it was difficult for us to get used to never having a closet, constantly changing hotel rooms, and never fully unpacking before we were back on the road. But over time we have learned to appreciate the value of having less - the freedom to live for experiences and the joy of traveling “light” in mind, body, and spirit.
We now know that experiences and memories are the most valuable things in life and that they can only be acquired when we let go of our need for possessions and focus on what really matters in life - enjoying our lives each day with the people we love.
24. How did the author feel about the idea of traveling the world initially?
A. Anxious and fearful. B. Unwilling and doubtful.
C. Enthusiastic and excited. D. Unconcerned and confused.
25. Why did the family decide to travel the world?
A. To strengthen family bonds. B. To escape their current life.
C. To achieve a family dream. D. To experience different cultures.
26. What do the family do with their old clothes after acquiring new ones?
A. They throw them away. B. They keep them as souvenirs.
C. They donate them to poor people. D. They exchange them with local people.
27. What do we know about the family from the last paragraph?
A. They value new experiences over material belongings.
B. They realize happiness is based on certain possessions.
C. They find having enough supplies is key to a happy trip.
D They cherish collecting items more than building bonds.
C
Middle-age and older adults with long-term loneliness are at higher risk of stroke (中风) than those who do not report being lonely, according to a new study. Researchers found the risk of stroke among lonely adults was higher regardless of co-existing depressive symptoms or feelings of social isolation (孤立).
“Loneliness is increasingly considered a major public health issue. Our findings further highlight why that is,” lead author YeneeSoh, a research associate said in a press release. “Especially when experienced chronically (长期), our study suggests loneliness may play an important role in stroke incidence, which is already one of the leading causes of long-term disability and mortality worldwide.” Those who experienced situational loneliness - a temporary loneliness due to a change in circumstances - did not have an increased stroke risk, suggesting that the impact of loneliness on stroke risk occurs in the long term. The study followed nearly 9,000 stroke-free adults who were aged 50 or older for 10 to 12 years.
Results showed those who experienced chronic loneliness had a 56% higher risk of stroke than those who consistently reported not being lonely, independent of social isolation, depressive symptoms, body mass index, physical activity and other health conditions.
Previous research has linked loneliness to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, but the new study is one of the first large-scale, long-term studies to examine the association between loneliness changes and stroke risk over time.
“These study findings are consistent with other research that has shown that loneliness has been linked to poorer health,” said Dr. Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a professor who was not involved with the study.
“It’s also consistent with other research that shows that the harmful effects seem to be most associated when it is persistent or chronic over time,” she continued. “Because this study looked at loneliness at multiple times to determine whether there were changes, and whether it was consistent over time, it found that persistent levels were associated with the worst outcomes. If we fail to address their feelings of loneliness, there could be serious health consequences.”
28. What’s the main impact of loneliness on health according to the study?
A. Loneliness is only a concern for young adults.
B. Chronic loneliness increases the risk of stroke.
C. Situational loneliness has no effect on stroke risk.
D. Loneliness is not considered a public health issue.
29. How does the author develop the second paragraph?
A. By making comparisons. B. By giving more examples.
C. By reasoning and analyzing. D. By describing important events.
30. What does the study say about loneliness and health?
A. Loneliness is unrelated to health. B. Depression alone raises stroke risk.
C. Loneliness causes stroke on its own. D. Exercise cancels out loneliness’ effect.
31. What is the significance of the study’s long-term follow-up of participants?
A. It confirms that situational loneliness is a permanent state.
B. It shows that the impact of loneliness on health is immediate.
C. It demonstrates that physical activity is the key to reducing stroke risk.
D. It allows for the examination of the long-term effects of loneliness on stroke risk.
D
Researchers from the University of Cambridge and the British Antarctic Survey tracked fire activity over the past 150 years by measuring CO trapped in Antarctic ice. This gas is released, along with smoke, by wildfires, cooking and communal fires.
“We’ve been missing key information from the period when humans started to dramatically change Earth’s climate; information needed to test and develop climate models,” said Rachael Rhodes, lead author of the study. The new CO record fills that gap in time. The researchers charted the strength of biomass (生物量) burning between 1821 and 1995 by measuring CO in ice cores from Antarctica. The layers of ice inside these cores formed when snow was buried under subsequent years’ snowfall, enveloping pockets of air that directly sample the atmosphere’s composition at the time.
“It’s not common to find ancient gases trapped in ice cores for the most recent decades,” said Ivo Strawson, lead author of the study. “We need information on the atmosphere’s composition following the beginning of industrialisation to reduce uncertainties in climate models, which rely on these records to test or drive their simulations (模拟).”
A major difficulty with taking gas measurements from very young ice is that pressurised air bubbles (气泡) haven’t had time to form under the weight of more snow, said Strawson. To get around this problem, the researchers studied ice from locations where snow falls rapidly. They also developed a new analysis method, which melts ice continuously while obtaining the air.
The result showed that the strength of biomass burning has dropped steadily since the 1920s. That decline, said Rhodes, coincides with the expansion and intensification of agriculture in southern Africa, South America, and Australia during the early 20th century. With wild lands transformed into farmland, forest cover was limited and in turn fire activity dropped.
One assumption made by many climate models is that fire activity has increased along with population growth. But Rhodes disagreed. “Our work adds to a growing mass of evidence that this assumption is wrong, and the lists of historic fire activity need to be corrected so that models can accurately reproduce the variability we see in our record,” he said.
32. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The role of CO in developing new climate models.
B. The significance of CO records in climate modeling.
C. The methods used to measure CO levels in ice cores.
D. The impact of biomass burning on air quality and health.
33. Why is obtaining CO measurements from young Antarctic ice challenging?
A. Young ice is too thin to hold enough detectable gases.
B. The ice’s composition is too complex to be analysed.
C. Young ice lacks the necessary air bubbles for analysis.
D. The ice’s quick melting makes it impossible to store gases.
34. What does the underlined part “coincides with” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
A. ends with B. corresponds to C. contributes to D. conflicts with
35. Which statement about the existing climate models will Rhodes agree with?
A. They are outdated and require correction.
B. They are based on scientific measurements.
C. They fail to account for the variability in fire activity.
D. They accurately predict the impact of biomass burning.

I got out of a taxi after a tiring day at school, thinking about what I had learned. When I looked for my phone to pay the driver, I couldn’t find it. I felt scared and searched my bag and pockets quickly. The taxi driver, a friendly-looking older man, saw that I was upset.
“Is something wrong?” he asked, sounding worried.
“I... I lost my phone,” I said, feeling both shy and nervous. “I can’t pay you.”
The driver’s face became gentle. “Don’t worry about the money now. Let’s find your phone,” he said kindly, like a light in my difficult moment.
We went back over where I had been, and the driver waited as I looked all around the taxi. My heart was beating fast, and I was scared about losing my phone, which had all my important contacts and memories.
After looking everywhere, the driver said, “Maybe you left it at school? I can take you there.”
I was unsure, not wanting to be a bother, but he said, “It’s no problem. We’ll find it.”
As we went back to the school, I felt thankful for this stranger’s kindness. The lights of the city passed by quickly as we drove, and I thought about what I would do if I couldn’t find my phone.
When we got to the school, it was very quiet and dark. We looked in the classroom where I had been, but we didn’t find it. I started to feel hopeless, but the driver stayed hopeful.
He used his phone to call my number, and we heard my phone ringing under the seat! There was my phone, hidden with some books! I felt so relieved and happy.
“Thank you so much!” I said, almost crying from being so happy.
The driver smiled and said, “You don’t need to thank me. I’m just glad we found it.”

B They realize happiness is based on certain possessions.
C. They find having enough supplies is key to a happy trip.
D. They cherish collecting items more than building bonds.
【答案】24. B 25. A 26. C 27. A

【32题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“We’ve been missing key information from the period when humans started to dramatically change Earth’s climate; information needed to test and develop climate models…The new CO record fills that gap in time.(我们一直缺少人类开始剧烈改变地球气候时期的关键信息;这些信息是测试和开发气候模型所需要的……新的二氧化碳记录填补了这一时间空白。)”可知,第二段主要讲的是二氧化碳记录在气候建模中的意义。故选B。
【33题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“A major difficulty with taking gas measurements from very young ice is that pressurised air bubbles haven’t had time to form under the weight of more snow.(从非常年轻的冰层中测量气体的一个主要困难是,在更多积雪的重压下,加压气泡还没有时间形成。)”可知,年轻的冰层缺乏分析所需的必要气泡,所以从中获取二氧化碳测量数据具有挑战性。故选C。
【34题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第五段“The result showed that the strength of biomass burning has dropped steadily since the 1920s. (结果表明,自20世纪20年代以来,生物质燃烧的强度稳步下降。)”及“South America, and Australia during the early 20th century. With wild lands transformed into farmland, forest cover was limited and in turn fire activity dropped. (随着荒地转变为农田,森林覆盖受到限制,火灾活动随之减少。)”可知,荒地转变为农田是农业的扩张和集约化,即农业的扩张和集约化导致森林减少,火灾活动减少,因此生物质燃烧的强度也随之下降,即荒地森林的下降对应着生物质燃烧强度的下降。由此推测划线单词的含义“对应的”。故选B。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Our work adds to a growing mass of evidence that this assumption is wrong, and the lists of historic fire activity need to be corrected so that models can accurately reproduce the variability we see in our record.(我们的工作为越来越多的证据增添了力量,证明这个假设是错误的,历史火灾活动的清单需要被修正,以便模型能够准确地再现我们在记录中看到的变异性。)”可知,罗兹认为现有的气候模型已经过时,需要修正。故选A。

【答案】Paragraph 1:
On the way back to my house, we had a pleasant conversation. The ride back was full of friendly talk and laughter. It’s very different from the quiet ride we had before. When we got to my house, I gave him the money for the ride and more to thank him for his time and help. “Keep the extra money,” I said, feeling very thankful. He said: “Think of it as a good thing I did today.”
Paragraph 2:
As I watched the taxi go away, I thought about what had happened. I knew that sometimes, people we don’t expect can teach us important things about caring and being human. This wasn’t just about finding a lost phone; it was about connecting with another person, no matter the language or culture. In the end, I didn’t just find a phone; I found a valuable lesson about being kind and the power of helping others. A lesson I will always remember.
