Do we really need real dubbing artists in the age of artificial intelligence? Indeed, many have harbored doubts about the future and necessity of real dubbing (配音) artists. Yet for Kathryn Lin, a leading dubbing artist from China’s Taiwan island, the profession means the shared happiness of generations of audiences on both sides of the Taiwan Strait.
Born in 1975, Lin was frequently chosen by her school to take part in various speech contests. Unfortunately, in her first year of college, her family faced a major financial crisis, and she had no choice but to drop out of college and take up part-time jobs in shops and restaurants. The chance to join the dubbing industry came when the dubbing artists’ union on Taiwan island wanted to recruit students for dubbing performances, and she made it.
Since she was a newcomer to the industry, she had to complete her apprenticeship (学徒期) before getting real work, which usually takes three to five years of hard work, but Lin achieved that in less than two years.
“After working for a few years, I realized that the job was not just about bread and butter,” she said, stressing that the popular characters she has dubbed for have given her “a lot of insight into life and intriguing experiences”. Talking about the Chinese mainland’s animation market, Lin said mainland productions have a lot of original elements. Mainland animations “are a cultural blend of the East and the West, and the style inspires me a lot when dubbing.”
In her spare time she also attends lectures to help young criminals, and children who have dropped out of school. “They might have been under stress or were really confused before breaking the law, or might have dropped out of school for family reasons,” she said.
When it comes to AI dubbing, Lin said she is “actually trying to be less pessimistic… I think it’s a future trend.” Lin believes dubbing artists can transform themselves by, for instance, teaching the art of dubbing to younger people, publishing books, teaching in schools and giving lectures.
24. What made Lin take up dubbing?
A. Her family’s request. B. Her school’s recommendation.
C. The dubbing union’s recruitment. D. Her keen interest in the dubbing industry.
25. What do we know about mainland productions in Lin’s eyes?
A. They are fully original.
B. Their style can greatly inspire viewers.
C. Their figures are appealing and thought-provoking.
D. They feature a combination of the East and the West.
26. Which of the following best describes Lin?
A. Diligent and thoughtful. B. Talented and generous.
C. Competent and easy-going. D. Outgoing and humorous.
27. What did Lin think of dubbing in the future?
A. She is pessimistic about AI dubbing.
B. AI dubbing will substitute for dubbing artists to an extent.
C. AI dubbing will merely make up a small part of the industry.
D. Dubbing artists won’t be replaced as dubbing represents shared happiness.

You’ll find it at the doctor’s office, at the gym, and in online calculators: the body mass index, or BMI. It has been ever-present since its introduction in the 1970s. But this metric (度量标准) of a “healthy weight” has come under examination in the past decade or so, and with good reason. The relationship between physical well-being and BMI is complicated, and it’s often not a good indicator of your overall health, experts say.
BMI is a simple measurement calculated by dividing a person’s weight (or mass in kilograms if using metric) by their height. For decades, clinicians have used BMI to put our weight into different categories: underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. Twenty-five is the magic number: at this number or higher, you fall into the overweight or obese category.
Some population studies have associated having a high BMI with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, Type II diabetes, and other endocrine disorders. However, it may not be weight alone that plays into these negative health effects: research shows the societal shame people with high BMI have could also contribute to poor health outcomes.
Other studies have failed to find a strong correlation between BMI and health. People who are lean can be unhealthy, and people who have a BMI over 25 can have some health markers, says Fatima Stanford, an associate professor at Harvard Medical School and obesity medicine physician at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Then why do we still rely on BMI? One reason is that it’s a relatively simple measurement to take. This makes the metric easily accessible to practitioners without specialized training, says Eleanna De Filippis, a physician at the Mayo Clinic. Stanford says that extremely low or high values of BMI could be an indicator of potential health issues despite its early introduction, but values around 25 to 30 are difficult to interpret without other health metrics.
However, there are big issues with only using BMI, to assess health. BMI can’t tell what percentage of a person’s weight is from their fat, muscle, or bone. That’s why muscular athletes often have a high BMI despite having little body fat, De Filippis says. It’s also possible to have poor health measures, like high blood pressure and cholesterol, and be at a “normal” BMI, Stanford says.
28. What do we know about BMI?
A. People within normal BMI range can be unhealthy.
B. Experts suggest using BMI to imply our overall health.
C. People who have a BMI of 26 fall into the obese category.
D. People don’t often use BMI to measure their health nowadays.
29. What does the underlined word “correlation” in paragraph 4 mean?
A. Assumption. B. Connection. C. Correction. D. Distinction.
30. Why does Stanford think BMI is widely used?
A. It is scientific and reliable in many cases.
B. It is easy to use for those without much training.
C. It is still an accurate indicator of your overall health.
D. It could be of some use in indicating health problems.
31. What’s the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To introduce to readers what BMI is. B. To argue that BMI should not be used widely.
C. To inform readers of the shortcomings of BMI. D. To encourage readers to abandon the use of BMI.
D
Why are some of us good at math, or writing, while others excel at art or basketball? What causes the differences? Are they largely determined by the genes (nature) we inherit (遗传) from our parents? How much does the social environment (nurture) have to do with it? If you were a scientist interested in these questions, wouldn’t you love to study identical twins?
Over the last 10 years, a team of scientists led by psychologist Thomas J. Bouchard Jr. has studied about 65 pairs of identical twins who were raised apart. The scientists bring each pair of twins to the University of Minnesota for a week of intensive testing. They record the twins’ height, weight, eye color, ear shape, and head length. Meanwhile, they give the twins IQ and personality tests.
Bouchard’s team has been startled by the similarities between twins raised apart. The twins often have surprisingly similar gestures and postures, for instance. And they have led remarkably similar lives. Adult identical twins also tend to have similar medical histories, developing the eye disease glaucoma at the same time, for example.
“The coincidences are not surprising,” some critics of the Minnesota study say. They argue that everyone’s life has so many details that a number of coincidences are bound to exist. What’s more, for every coincidence discovered by a pair of identical twins raised apart, the critics could point to a vast number of undiscovered differences.
According to Bouchard, they find that genes play a big part in shaping our personalities - helping to determine whether we respect tradition and like to follow rules or not. The team has reported that intelligence also seems to be influenced much more by genes than by environment. Despite being raised by different families, separated identical twins earned identical or nearly identical scores on adult intelligence tests.
Other scientists, however, disagree. “How can you study whether intelligence is inherited when there are so many different ways just to define intelligence?” The problem applies to other traits (特征), they say.
Bouchard himself makes the point that even the most closely matched twins are different from each other. So even though genes may have a strong influence over our lives, they’re not the only influence. Our day-to-day experiences help to shape us too.
32. Why are scientists so interested in studying identical twins raised apart in different environments?
A. Because it can be studied with a week of intensive testing.
B. Because this group of twins have the most striking similarities.
C. Because it is a good way to measure the effects of nature and nurture.
D. Because there has already been a lot of research on identical twins raised together.
33 What do critics of the Minnesota study say about the similarities between twins raised apart?
A. They are merely coincidences.
B. They are overstated to some extent.
C. They are nothing compared with the differences.
D. They are too common to deserve any serious consideration.
34. Which of the following statements would Bouchard agree to?
A. Similarities go hand in hand with differences.
B. Nature has a notable influence over our lives.
C. Intelligence is something inherited rather than acquired.
D. Environment plays a bigger part in personal development.
35. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Inherited Genes Favor Twins B. Environment Tells Apart Twins
C. Science Looks Twice at Twins D. Physical Traits Come to Twins
Drinking coffee has been linked to a reduced risk of developing type II diabetes, neurological conditions such as dementia, and even death. ____36____
How decaf compares to regular coffee
The good news is that many of coffee’s health benefits are still found in decaffeinated (脱咖啡因) coffee. The reason for this is thought to be due to the levels of antioxidants (抗氧化剂) in coffee beans, many of which remain even after the caffeine has been removed. Reduced though, the overall levels of antioxidants are still high. ____37____
The pros and cons of caffeine
Researchers found a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease and death in all coffee drinkers, which included people who drank decaf. Also, caffeine can help alleviate migraines (偏头痛).
____38____ In the short-term, consuming too much caffeine can cause jitteriness, sleep disruptions, headaches, or a racing heart. Long-term, consuming too much caffeine can lead to withdrawal symptoms, such as headaches, if a person tries to stop.
____39____
One of the reasons that the health benefits of coffee have been debated for so long is due to the fact that its consumption can often go hand in hand with other habits. Researchers found coffee drinking was associated with a higher rate of smoking cigarettes—and that the health risks they faced such as lung cancer were due to smoking rather than coffee. Another study found, regular coffee consumption is associated with a reduced amount of weight gain over time. ____40____ This held true whether people were drinking regular or decaf coffee. “Having unsweetened coffee seems to be the way to go,” Ball says.
A. Context matters.
B. The hidden cause and effect.
C. The effects of caffeine can vary, however.
D. That can translate to real benefits for decaf drinkers.
E. Physicians should stop telling patients to stop drinking coffee.
F. But only if drinkers had their coffee black or with cream, but no sugar.
G. But as people increasingly turn to decaf, are they still getting those same benefits?

It was a sunny day. Anabia, an 11-year-old girl, was excited because today was the drawing contest at her school. Anabia was really good at drawing and usually got the highest marks in art. Her teachers would often ask her to make posters for school plays and call on her during free periods to help with cuttings, drawing, shading, colouring and much more. There was an art competition taking place in school and Anabia had worked really hard and wanted to win it. But there was one thing that was disturbing her today.
Recently, a new girl, Rida, had joined her class. She was also interested in art but she was not as good at drawing as Anabia was. Miss Saima, the art teacher, helped Rida and taught her tips and tricks to improve her drawing skill. And now Rida was also considered among the best artists in grade six.
Rida was quick, smart and intelligent. Anabia became jealous of Rida’s intelligence and felt that the new girl would be tough to beat.
So that day, for the art competition, Miss Saima took all the students to the art room, told them their roll numbers and gave important instructions. Anabia’s roll number was 16, while Rida was number 17. The bell rang, indicating the beginning of the contest. Miss Saima wrote on the board: make a scene of a sunset with a flowing river and a sailing boat.
Anabia knew that the best tools to make a sunset were oil pastels (油画棒). Anabia started to look for her oil pastels in her art bag. Then, after looking through the bag, she remembered that she had left them at home. Immediately, she got up to tell Miss Saima.
Miss Saima was disappointed at Anabia’s carelessness and told her that she could not help her, as it was her responsibility to come prepared for the contest that had been announced a week in advance. Anabia’s best friends were also there, but none of them offered to share anything, much to Anabia’s surprise and disappointment.

M: So Barbara, you’re famous as a journalist and you’ve written nickel and diamond. Based on your research, could you start by telling us why you do secret investigations?
W: Sure, interviews are fine, but sometimes you need to experience it yourself. By putting yourself in the situation you’re investigating, you can then write from a more informed point of view.
M: I see. So what did you do?
W: Well, I worked as a waitress, a hotel housekeeper, a nursing home assistant and a supermarket clerk. I spent a month in each low paid job, working in Florida, Maine and Minnesota.
M: Well, that’s a lot of different jobs and places. What exactly did you find out?
W: Well, first the rents were very high and the wages were so low. Also, you have to be a hard worker. Interviewing people is one thing, but actually doing the job day to day shows you exactly how hard these people’s lives are.
M: Hum and of course, Nicol and Diamond went on to be a very popular book. It was a new York times bestseller.
W: Yes, I was really surprised at all the interest. I think it really opened people’s eyes a first hand account like that. I hope my book can attract more attention so as to improve the situation of people in low paid jobs.

B 18. B 19. C 20. A
Considering gardening, people tend to picture an elderly man or woman in front of their house. Yet a recent study among 2, 000 young people aged between 18 and 34 has revealed that gardening is becoming increasingly popular among young people. Kev Smith, who organized the survey, said that the study showed that gardening suits everyone, whatever their age. On average, young adults spend around two hours per week taking care of their plants. Two thirds of participants also said that they love shopping for gardening items, including plants, seeds and tools. Naturally, the item that is bought most frequently is gardening gloves, probably the item that is most frequently used to. The most popular place to grow plants is on the kitchen windows, while living rooms, bathrooms and balconies are also popular locations. The study also found that 60% wish they had access to more outside space than they do at present. However, 78 percent believe you do not actually need a big outdoor area to experience the benefits of gardening. Gardening is brilliant for our minds. It includes concentrating on what you are doing right now, repetitive actions and using all your senses like touch and smell.

In her spare time, she also attends lectures to help young criminals, and children who have dropped out of school.
B Their style can greatly inspire viewers.
C 25. D 26. A 27. B

Some population studies have associated having a high BMI with increased risk of cardiovascular disease Type II diabetes, and other endocrine disorders.
A 29. B 30. D 31. C

33. What do critics of the Minnesota study say about the similarities between twins raised apart?
C 33. A 34. B 35. C

根据文章第一段“Why are some of us good at math, or writing, while others excel at art or basketball? What causes the differences? Are they largely determined by the genes (nature) we inherit (遗传) from our parents? How much does the social environment (nurture) have to do with it?
根据第四段““The coincidences are not surprising,” some critics of the Minnesota study say. They argue that everyone’s life has so many details that a number of coincidences are bound to exist. What’s more, for every coincidence discovered by a pair of identical twins raised apart, the critics could point to a vast number of undiscovered differences. (“这些巧合并不令人惊讶,”明尼苏达研究的一些批评者说。他们认为,每个人的生活都有很多细节,因此必然存在一些巧合。更重要的是,对于一对分开抚养的同卵双胞胎所发现的每一个巧合,批评者都可以指出大量未被发现的差异)”可知,一些批评者认为这只是巧合。故选A。
根据最后一段“Bouchard himself makes the point that even the most closely matched twins are different from each other. So even though genes may have a strong influence over our lives, they’re not the only influence. Our day-to-day experiences help to shape us too. (布沙尔自己也指出,即使是最匹配的双胞胎也会彼此不同。因此,尽管基因可能对我们的生活有很大的影响,但它们并不是唯一的影响。我们的日常经历也有助于塑造我们)”可推断布沙尔会同意自然对我们的生活有显著的影响。故选B。
【35题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“Why are some of us good at math, or writing, while others excel at art or basketball? What causes the differences? Are they largely determined by the genes (nature) we inherit (遗传) from our parents? How much does the social environment (nurture) have to do with it? (为什么有些人擅长数学或写作,而有些人擅长艺术或篮球?是什么导致了这些差异?它们在很大程度上是由我们从父母那里继承的基因(天性)决定的吗?社会环境(教养)对其有多大影响?)”及最后一段“So even though genes may have a strong influence over our lives, they’re not the only influence. Our day-to-day experiences help to shape us too.

G 37. D 38. C 39. A 40. F
上文“Drinking coffee has been linked to a reduced risk of developing type II diabetes, neurological conditions such as dementia, and even death.(喝咖啡与降低患II型糖尿病、痴呆症等神经系统疾病甚至死亡的风险有关)”说明咖啡对健康有多方面的积极影响。
上文“The good news is that many of coffee’s health benefits are still found in decaffeinated (脱咖啡因) coffee. The reason for this is thought to be due to the levels of antioxidants (抗氧化剂) in coffee beans, many of which remain even after the caffeine has been removed. Reduced though, the overall levels of antioxidants are still high.(好消息是,咖啡许多健康益处仍然存在于无咖啡因咖啡中。其原因被认为是由于咖啡豆中抗氧化剂的含量,其中许多即使在去除咖啡因后仍然存在。尽管有所减少,但抗氧化剂的总体水平仍然很高)”说明脱咖啡因咖啡仍然保留了咖啡中的许多抗氧化剂,虽然抗氧化剂的水平有所降低,但总体上仍然很高。空处承接上文,D项中的That指代前文中的“the overall levels of antioxidants are still high”,说明这就是脱咖啡因咖啡对于饮用者有好处的原因。
以及下文“In the short-term, consuming too much caffeine can cause jitteriness, sleep disruptions, headaches, or a racing heart.(在短期内,摄入过多的咖啡因会导致紧张、睡眠中断、头痛或心跳加速)”说明摄入过多的咖啡会带来负面的影响。
