Wildlife conservation programs are a great way to get involved in the preservation of endangered species, as well as learn how you can help protect them. If you are a wildlife lover, here are some programs you can choose.
●Animal Rescue Project, South Africa
You will be working with experienced conservationists in Cape Town. A significant challenge is to find new homes for homeless dogs and cats. The project comprises two sections: a fully equipped animal hospital and an adoption center focusing on securing new homes. Due to limited funding, the center can only afford a small number of permanent staff, relying heavily on wildlife lovers to assist with daily tasks and provide hands-on care for these animals.
●Sea Turtle Conservation Project, Sri Lanka
Recent years have witnessed a significant decline in the sea turtle’s numbers due to numerous commercial fishing. As a wildlife lover, your role extends to supporting hatcheries (孵化场) in their conservation efforts. Additionally, your involvement helps these hatcheries with funds, as we provide a placement fee for each wildlife lover, enabling them to generate additional income.
●Wildlife Conservation Program, Australia
You will be engaged in activities such as animal feeding, cleaning, maintenance, and enrichment. This program provides an incredible opportunity to gain firsthand international work experience. For you, this program is an excellent choice. Not only will you contribute to a noble cause, but it also offers a fantastic opportunity to meet people from around the world.
●Marine Conservation Program, Bali
You will be working in Tianyar, where the reef is now in a worsening state. The project was initiated to rest ore and conserve Tianyar’s coral reef, not only to protect its remarkable and delicate ecosystems but also to secure a sustainable future for the residents.

I used to believe that only words could catch the essence (本质) of the human soul. The literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions themselves. Words were everything.
That belief changed.
In an ordinary math class my teacher posed a simple question: What’s 0. 99 rounded to the nearest whole number? Easy. When rounded to the nearest whole number, 0. 99=1. Somehow, I thought even though 0. 99 is only 0. 01 away from 1, there’s still a 0. 01 difference. That means even if two things are only a little different, they are still different, so doesn’t that make them completely different?
My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation (等式) : 1= 0. 9, which could also be expressed as 1=0. 99999… repeating itself without ever ending.
There was something mysterious but attractive about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were connected by an equal sign.
Lying in bed, I thought about how much the equation paralleled our existence. The left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there is that gap in between life and death. The right side means a time and space full of limitless possibilities, and endless opportunities into the open future.
So that’s what life is. Objective but imaginative. Unchangeable but limitless. Life is an equation with two sides that balances itself out. Still, we can’t ever truly seem to put the perfect words to it. So possibly numbers can express ideas as equally well as words can. For now, let’s leave it at that: 1= 0. 99999… and live a life like it.
4. What does the author emphasize about words in paragraph 1?
A. Their wide variety. B. Their literary origins.
C. Their different sounds. D. Their expressive power.
5. What made the author find the equation attractive?
A. The repetition of a number. B. The difference between the two numbers.
C. The question the teacher raised. D. The way two different numbers are equal.
6. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “paralleled” in paragraph 6?
A. Measured. B. Mirrored. C. Composed. D. Influenced.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Perfect Equation. B. Numbers Build Equations.
C. An Attractive Question. D. Words Outperform Numbers.
D 5. D 6. B 7. A

根据第一段“I used to believe that only words could catch the essence (本质) of the human soul. The literary works contained such distinct stories that they shaped the way we saw the world. Words were what composed the questions we sought to uncover and the answers to those questions themselves. Words were everything.(我曾经相信,只有语言才能捕捉到人类灵魂的本质。文学作品包含了如此独特的故事,它们塑造了我们看待世界的方式。文字构成了我们试图揭示的问题,以及这些问题本身的答案)” 可推知,在第一段作者主要强调了语言的表达力量,故选 D。
【5题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段“There was something mysterious but attractive about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were connected by an equal sign.(这个方程式神秘而迷人。左边是不变的、客观的:里面有一个没有尽头的数字。右边是无穷无尽的东西,数字无限重复。然而,不知怎么的,这两个相反的东西被一个等号连接起来了)”可知,作者觉得这个等式很迷人,因为数字虽然不同,但是却被等号连接起来了。由此可知,让作者觉得这个等式迷人的是两个不同的数相等的方式。故选D。
【6题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词下文“The left side of the equation represents that sometimes life itself is so unchangeable and so clear. The concrete, whole number of the day when you were born and the day when you would die. But then there is that gap in between life and death.(等式的左边表示有时候生命本身是如此的不可改变,如此的清晰。你出生的日期和你死亡的日期的具体整数。但是生与死之间有一段距离)”可知,作者躺在床上思考的是这个等式与我们的存在是多么相似,划线词paralleled的意思是“与……十分相似”,和 mirrored意思相近,故选B。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是第四段“My teacher answered my question by presenting another equation (等式): 1= 0. 9, which could also be expressed as 1=0. 99999… repeating itself without ever ending.(我的老师给出了另一个等式:1=0. 9,也可以表示为1=0. 99999… 不断重复,没有尽头)”和第五段“There was something mysterious but attractive about the equation. The left side was unchangeable, objective: it contained a number that ended. On the right was something endless, number repeating itself limitless times. Yet, somehow, these two opposed things were connected by an equal sign.(这个方程式神秘而迷人。左边是不变的、客观的:里面有一个没有尽头的数字。右边是无穷无尽的东西,数字无限重复。然而,不知怎么的,这两个相反的东西被一个等号连接起来了)”可知,本文主要讲的是作者在数学课上学了一个等式后的一些感悟。由此可知,最恰当的标题是A 选项 “The Perfect Equation(完美的等式)”。故选A。

Researchers at MIT created a high-tech pill that starts to vibrate (震动) once it makes contact with liquid (液体) in the user’s stomach and make him or her feel full. The pill was reportedly thought up by Shriya Srinivasan, currently an assistant professor of bioengineering at Harvard University.
VIBES, short for Vibrating Ingestible Bio Electronic Stimulator, was only recently made public in a study published in the Science Journal, but it is already being announced by the media as the future of weight loss. Although it has yet to be tested on humans, trials on pigs have achieved very hopeful results. After about 30 minutes of VIBES activity, pigs consumed on average almost 40 percent less food in the next half hour than they did without the smart pill. Apparently, the novel device works by activating stretch receptors in the stomach, modeling the presence of food. This in turn signals the brain to increase the levels of hormones (激素) that make us feel full. The vibrating stimulator, which is about the size of a vitamin pill, is powered by an encased battery and activated either by the stomach liquid breaking down the coat around the pill, or by an incorporated timer. After producing the desired effect, the pill exits the body with other solid waste.
The good news is that it is expected to have a cost within dollar range, and researchers say that it may eventually be possible to implant the stimulator and thus remove the need for people to constantly take it.
“Our study demonstrates the effectiveness of a low-cost, non-operative method to reduce food intake and calorie consumption. The device functions effectively in the stomach, leading to fullness,” said Giovanni Traverso, co-author of the study. “The device has the potential to offer more options for weight loss treatment. However, future studies will need to explore its effects on human body before it’s available for patients.”
Researchers are now exploring ways to increase the producing of VIBES pills which could enable clinical trials in humans.
8. What is the outcome of taking the pill?
A. Food storage. B. Recovery of users. C. Liquid production. D. A sense of of fullness.
9. Which aspect of the device is mentioned in paragraph 2?
A. Its testing history. B. Its side effect.
C Its working principle. D. Its intelligence.
10. What is the researchers’ final goal of the device?
A. To fix it in human body. B. To destroy the coat around it.
C. To produce stomach liquid with it. D. To remove solid waste from it.
11. What is Giovanni Traverso’s attitude towards the future of the device?
A. Worried. B. Watchful. C. Doubtful. D. Confused.
D 9. C 10. A 11. B

We learn about the world through the knowledge accumulated (积累) over thousands of years. Standing on the shoulders of great men, we don’t have to experience endless trial and error (试错法), just as the wheels do not have to be reinvented each time to run a car. But where does our ability to learn from others come from?
A study led by Markus Paulus, professor at Loyola Marymount University, shows that the ability has its roots in earliest childhood. “It’s generally assumed that children’s ability to imitate (模仿) is inborn, but according to our observation, children imitate because they themselves are imitated by caregivers. This interaction enables a cultural shift of knowledge, which, through generations’ efforts, leads to the development of human beings,” says Markus Paulus.
In this research, Paulus recorded the interaction between mother and child over several months. The babies came into the lab for the first time at the age of 6 months, while their final visit was when they were 18 months old. As they engaged in various play situations, the interactions and imitations of mother and child were analyzed. The long-term study showed that the more sensitive a mother was in her interactions with her six-month-old child and the more often she imitated the baby, the greater the child’s overall ability was at the age of 18 months.
Paulus’ research shows that mutual (相互的) imitation is the key of knowledge shift, through which children successfully learn various skills, such as how to use objects, waving and acquisition of language. “This interaction is the nucleus of learning and, finally, gives rise to developmental success of human.” says Paulus.
“Cultural learning is an essential part of human development, and it is rooted in the imitation of others, particularly our caregivers during our earliest childhood,” says Paulus. “Through this, we learn from each other and pass on knowledge to the next generation, so certain actions or techniques do not have to be constantly invented again.”
12. Why does the author mention the example of wheels?
A. To praise the invention of car wheels. B. To describe the process of trial and error.
C. To emphasize the necessity of new tools. D. To show the importance of prior (以前的) knowledge.
13. What can we learn about Paulus’ research?
A. Children’s imitation was recorded by mothers.
B. Sensitive mothers encouraged children’s imitation.
C. Children’s ability was analyzed through interaction.
D. Effective interaction promoted children’s development.
14. What does the underlined word “nucleus” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Key. B. Result. C. Aim. D. Content.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. How to Interact with Children? B. Why does Development Matter?
C. Imitation: The Engine of Development D. Cultural Learning: The Root of Imitation
D 13. D 14. A 15. C

根据第一段“We learn about the world through the knowledge accumulated (积累) over thousands of years. Standing on the shoulders of great men, we don’t have to experience endless trial and error (试错法), just as the wheels do not have to be reinvented each time to run a car. But where does our ability to learn from others come from? (我们通过几千年积累的知识来了解世界。站在伟人的肩膀上,我们不必经历无尽的尝试和错误,就像汽车的轮子不必每次都重新发明一样。但是我们向别人学习的能力从何而来呢?)”和第二段“It’s generally assumed that children’s ability to imitate (模仿) is inborn, but according to our observation, children imitate because they themselves are imitated by caregivers. This interaction enables a cultural shift of knowledge, which, through generations’ efforts, leads to the development of human beings(一般认为孩子的模仿能力是天生的,但根据我们的观察,孩子模仿是因为他们自己被照顾者模仿。这种相互作用使知识的文化转变成为可能,通过几代人的努力,导致人类的发展)”可推知,作者提到轮子的例子是为了强调先前知识的重要性。正是站在巨人的肩膀上,我们不必再重新进行研究和试验。故选D。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The long-term study showed that the more sensitive a mother was in her interactions with her six-month-old child and the more often she imitated the baby, the greater the child’s overall ability was at the age of 18 months.(这项长期研究表明,母亲在与6个月大的孩子互动时越敏感,她模仿孩子的次数越多,孩子在18个月大时的整体能力就越强)”可知,Paulus的研究表明,妈妈越频繁地模仿孩子,孩子的发育水平越好。
故选A。
根据最后一段““Cultural learning is an essential part of human development, and it is rooted in the imitation of others, particularly our caregivers during our earliest childhood,” says Paulus. “Through this, we learn from each other and pass on knowledge to the next generation, so certain actions or techniques do not have to be constantly invented again.”(“文化学习是人类发展的重要组成部分,它植根于对他人的模仿,尤其是我们童年早期的照顾者,”保卢斯说。“通过这种方式,我们相互学习,并将知识传授给下一代,因此某些动作或技术不必不断地重新发明。”)”结合文章主要讲述了模仿在人类进化中的重要性,强调了模仿对于人类进化的推动作用。因此,最佳标题应该是C项“模仿:发展的引擎”。故选C。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When I was seven years old, my family moved from Mexico to America. In Mexico, I was a cheerful girl who loved making people laugh with my jokes and inventing fun games to play with my friends. However, when I arrived in America, I found it hard to fit in, and I became quieter.
We lived in a small house with a modest yard where we grew vegetables-my responsibility. While I took pride in watching them grow, there were times when I dreamed of having a beautiful garden like my schoolmate Luella’s, with its delicate tulips (郁金香). Although Luella lived in the same neighborhood as me, we barely knew each other.
It was after a tornado that Luella and I finally became close friends.
The tornado struck on a Sunday afternoon. The gentle breeze transformed into a strong wind, and thick gray clouds filled the sky. Gradually, the tornado took shape, starting as a thin rope and growing into a large black funnel (漏斗). My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Terrified, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.
As I stepped outside I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing Luella’s garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, her family seemed to be away at the time, and no one was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the tulips and debris (碎片) spread everywhere. I could only imagine how heartbroken they must feel seeing this.
Then my mom’s usual words rang in my ear, “It is more blessed to give than to receive,” and my family started to think about how we could help.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
Just at that moment, Luella’s family returned in their car.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’s sorrow for her lost garden.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Just at that moment, Luella’ family returned in their car. Empathy surged within me as I saw their shock and disbelief. Approaching Luella, I tightly held her hands and said, “I’m so sorry for your loss, but thankfully you’re all right.” She weakly nodded, still puzzled by the shocking scene. My family volunteered to help clean up the mess, cutting down the branches and removing the fallen trees. To lift Luella’s spirits and give her comfort, I tried my best to cheer her up while tidying the garden with her, during which my own joyful personality seemed to revive a bit.
Even after the debris was cleared, I could still sense Luella’ sorrow for her lost garden. My heart went out to her, knowing how much she had cherished those tulips that she had devoted so much energy to. Determined to restore the beauty of the garden, I suggested we rebuild the garden, which Luella delightedly agreed. Carefully planted and watered, the new tulip seedlings once again filled the garden, which symbolized the beginning of our friendship, as well as the turning that I finally got embraced by this new environment. My mom was right: it’s more blessed to give than to receive because when you give, you may receive something unexpected in return.

In an ordinary math class, my teacher posed a simple question: What’s 0. 99 rounded to the nearest whole number?
A Their wide variety. B. Their literary origins.
C. Their different sounds. D. Their expressive power.
5 What made the author find the equation attractive?
A. The repetition of a number. B. The difference between the two numbers.
C. The question the teacher raised. D. The way two different numbers are equal.
6. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “paralleled” in paragraph 6?
A. Measured. B. Mirrored. C. Composed. D. Influenced.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. The Perfect Equation. B. Numbers Build Equations.
C. An Attractive Question. D. Words Outperform Numbers.

VIBES short for Vibrating Ingestible Bio Electronic Stimulator, was only recently made public in a study published in the Science Journal, but it is already being announced by the media as the future of weight loss.
C. Its working principle.
A. Worried. B. Watchful. C. Doubtful. D. Confused.

As I stepped outside, I witnessed the extent of the damage the tornado had caused to our neighborhood.
