If taking part in a race is one of your New Year’s goals, why not get started straight away? Here’s our pick of the best, fastest, toughest and most enjoyable UK races this January.
Lyle Mile Challenge
Fort Matilda, Renfrewshire, 1 January
For some reason, RunKeeper marks the route for this race as “easy”. Nothing could be further from the truth. A mile is never an easy distance to race, and this mile goes several steps further. Every inch of the route is uphill, starting at just above sea level near Fort Matilda train station. Once you catch your breath, you’ll be rewarded with a fantastic view across the water to Kilcreggan, weather permitting.
Romsey 5 Mile
Romsey, Hampshire, 19 January
There aren’t a lot of five mile events out there to choose from, so this fast and flat event attracts a large number of runners from the super-speedy to the normal-speedy like the rest of us. This popularity can make the start a bit crowded but the runners will spread out soon, allowing you to enjoy a well-supported and well-organized race in the nice area of the Broadlands Estate.
First Chance 10K
Exeter, Devon, 5 January
This 10K is fast and flat, so a good time should be possible, even if the sandy surface might not be quite as quick as tarmac (柏油路). You’ll mostly be following the various branches of the River Exe just outside Exeter. This course will be absolutely wonderful on a cold winter’s morning.
Windmill Way Wander 2025
Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, 18 January
There are options for every distance from 5K to 47K, but note that this event is not flat just because it’s on roads. Road conditions differ almost constantly, but with a generous seven-hour time limit you don’t have to rush if you don’t want to.
1. What is special about Lyle Mile Challenge?
A. It is upward and tough. B. It needs special weather.
C. It is an easy race in fact. D. It takes place near a sea.
2. Which race may offer the longest distance?
A. Romsey 5 Mile. B. Lyle Mile Challenge.
C. First Chance 10K. D. Windmill Way Wander 2025.
3. What do Romsey 5 Mile and First Chance 10K have in common?
A. They are fast and flat. B. The roads are crowded all the way.
C. They are held on the same day. D. The runners should be super-speedy.
B
One tap of my stick, and the buffalo (水牛) moved forward. I guided them along the road, through the heart of the village. We walked past mud homes and villagers working on their crops. This was life in a small village in Sindh, Pakistan.
Months flew by as I watched over the buffalo daily until Uncle visited. “Brother, you must send Rasool Bux to school. Herding buffalo is not in his future,” Uncle said. My father was persuaded finally. The following week, I started primary school. By the end of the year, I was among the top students in the school and determined to study at a university in Karachi, a big city over 150 kilometers away. “Look at this guy! He will go to study in Karachi?” My classmates laughed and made jokes.
The challenges life set before me didn’t weaken my determination. I turned to writing as a way out. I got published and won competitions, gaining recognition and confidence to keep moving forward.
I began college studies when I was hit with another roadblock. My father couldn’t afford my further education. I decided to find a part-time job. My handwriting was good, and I had developed a passion for calligraphy, so I tried my luck with a leading daily newspaper.
One fine day, I took a bus to Hyderabad alone, a city that lay fifty kilometers from my village. Guided by kind strangers, I presented my calligraphy skills at the newspaper’s counter and was offered an internship (实习) with pay. This was one of the happiest days of my life.
Within a year, under the guidance of senior calligraphers, my skills improved, along with a good salary. Many instructors helped me realize my dreams, leading to an editorial position, advertising work, and the most wonderful milestone of all, an MBA in marketing and advertising from a Karachi university.
Now, when I reflect on the laughter and doubtful glances of the village students, their opinions hold no weight. What truly matters is that I followed the dreams and struggled for them. Just as I guided the buffalo with my stick, I went through challenges and hardships, guiding my life’s course.

6. Why does the author mention the internship experience in Hyderabad?

A growing interest in exotic pets is drawing young people to pet cafes and social media. Even on a weekday, Kitty Zoo, a pet cafe in Changzhou, Jiangsu, which was founded just two months ago by Tang Rong, attracts a crowd of visitors, all eager to meet its star, a capybara named Jilizhazha.
The term “exotic pets” refers to animals beyond traditional companions like cats and dogs. They are relatively rare or unusual to keep, not native to the owner’s locals. On the platform Xiaohongshu, the “exotic pets” has got over 360 million views, showing pet owners caring for popular animals such as capybaras, raccoons.
23-year-old Jiang Tao began raising raccoons at home last April inspired by their classic imagery on a popular childhood snack in China. Today, Jiang Tao has over 500,000 followers on Douyin, with his most attractive content centered on his raccoons.
While raising exotic pets brings unique experiences, the owners advise to think twice before we bring these animals home. For Jiang Tao, the primary cost of raising raccoons comes from their destructive nature. “One of them knocked over my TV, costing me 2,000 yuan,” he recalled with a laugh.
In addition to managing their wild behaviors, pet owners must also create specific living environments and provide daily care for these unique animals. Capybaras, for example, need regular baths in special pools, and their living spaces must be heated during winter, according to Tang. She explained that a typical male capybara can weigh up to 50 kg and eat a lot, producing a large amount of waste. “Unless you have a large yard or enough space, keeping a capybara indoors isn’t practical,” she advised.
Moreover, Huang Yuan, a senior doctor at a pet hospital in Wuhan, highlighted important consideration for exotic pet owners: the limited access to hospitals equipped to treat exotic animals. For example, only about 20 out of the 300 to 400 pet hospitals in Wuhan are currently equipped to treat exotic animals professionally.
So while exotic pets charm us, we must remember: behind every cute exotic pet lies devotion few are ready for.
8. What do we know about Kitty Zoo?
A. It closes on weekends. B. It is a popular social media.
C. It is where visitors rest. D. It has a star pet named Jilizhazha.
9. Which of the followings belong to exotic pets?
A. Cats. B. Rabbits. C. Raccoons. D. Chickens.
10. What can we infer about the exotic pet owners?
A. They prepare TV sets for them. B. They take much energy for them.
C. They put them in pet hospitals. D. They keep them indoors all the time.
11. What is the author’s attitude towards raising exotic pets?
A. Supportive. B. Cautious. C. Objective. D. Doubtful.
D
You probably know better than to eat a strawberry straight from the box without washing it. Fruits and vegetables are often coated in harmful pesticides (农药) to prevent pests when they’re growing. These chemicals are not exactly safe for human either. And while you probably wash off your produce before eating it, even a thorough wash with water isn’t enough to properly get rid of all the pesticides.
In the new study published in the American Chemical Society’s journal Nano Letters, experts find that simply washing your fruits and vegetables “cannot wholly remove pesticides” because they can actually “enter inside of fruit through the skin.” The pesticides left behind on the skin of produce are fat-soluble (溶脂的), which basically just means they aren’t as easy to get rid of.
That doesn’t, however, mean you have a life of pesticide-full apples and oranges. “The research suggests that peeling (削皮) can effectively remove nearly all pesticide remains, contrasted with the frequently recommended practice of washing,” study co-author Professor Ye said.
If you’re not planning to peel your fruit and vegetables, Professor Ye suggests soaking (浸泡) the produce in a solution (溶液) of salt, a solution of soda, or a solution of vinegar. “This will help to remove many of the pesticides found in produce.”
“The waxy layers (蜡质层) of produce hold on to pesticides and are very difficult to remove using water alone,” said Dr. Bryan, food scientist and author of 150 Food Science Questions Answered. He stressed, “Chemical treatments are needed to effectively remove the waxy layers. However, peeling remains the most effective way to remove a large concentration of pesticides.”
While you’re not going to die over one unwashed blueberry, long-term pesticide consumption can increase your risk of cancer and cause birth problems, immune system disease, and other diseases, according to Dr. Bryan.
12. What can we learn about fruits and vegetables according to the text?
A. They go bad easily. B. They have harmful chemicals.
C. They are ruined by pests. D. They can be eaten without washing.
13. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. What pesticides are. B. How the new study is conducted.
C. Why pesticides are hard to remove. D. Where the new study is published.
14. What is the most effective way to deal with apples with pesticides?
A. To peel them. B. To clear the waxy layers.
C. To have a thorough wash. D. To soak them in a solution of salt.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. The ways to wash fruits and vegetables.
B. The differences between organic fruits and chemical fruits.
C. The long-term risks caused by eating fruits with pesticides.
D. The suggestions to kill off pesticides in fruits and vegetables.

A. To tell his professional growth.
B. To show off his calligraphy skills.
C. To offer his solution to difficult situations.
D. To emphasize his travel experiences.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. All is well that ends well. B. Where there is a will, there is a way.

23-year-old Jiang Tao began raising raccoons at home last April, inspired by their classic imagery on a popular childhood snack in China.

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. A 15. D

【16题详解】
根据前文“New year, new you! As you set your New Year Resolutions, improving your English level is an excellent goal. (新的一年,新的你!当你制定新年计划时,提高你的英语水平是一个很好的目标。)”以及后文“Here are four tips to help you succeed in keeping your English language New Year Resolution! (这里有四个建议,可以帮助你成功地坚持你的英语新年决心!)”可知,前文提出把提高英语水平作为一个目标,后文提出坚持学英语的建议,所以空处应是过渡句,G项“English can seem difficult, but it is not very hard to learn (英语似乎很难,但学起来并不难)”承接上文,并通过论述难易,引出下文,符合文意。故选G项。
【17题详解】
设空为本段小标题,根据后文“You might want to improve quickly by studying English for eight hours a week. But if you have a busy social or work life, such a great goal might not last through the year. Take time to be honest with yourself. If you are realistic about your goal to study English, small efforts will add up over time.

根据本段小标题“Prepare study resources (准备学习资源)”可知,本段主题是准备学习资源,所以E项“There are thousands of tools to study English (学习英语的工具有成千上万种)”符合本段主题。故选E项。
【20题详解】
根据前文“Whether you want to study English with a large group, or just in a one-on-one class, you’d better have a regular class time. (初学者可以学习正确的发音和语调,高级学生将通过以母语水平和速度进行定期对话来提高他们的能力。)”可知,前文讲述有一个固定的上课时间,后文讲述好处,所以F项“Every student benefits from the guidance of a teacher (每个学生都受益于老师的指导)”承接上文,并引出下文,符合文意。故选F项。
