Amsterdam, the capital and most populous city in the Netherlands,is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world, famous for its beautiful canals, top art museum, cycling culture, and Red Light District. Here are some of the key points to remember as you plan your trip to Amsterdam.
Must-See Attractions
Most visitors begin their Amsterdam adventure in the Old Centre, which is full of traditional architecture, shopping centers, and coffee shops. You’ll also want to check out Amsterdam’s Museum Quarter in the South District, which is great for shopping at the Albert Cuyp Market and having a picnic in the Vondelpark. The top museums to visit are the Rijksmusuem, the Ann Frank House, and the Van Gogh Museum. The Canal Ring is a UNESCO World Heritage Site that was originally built to attract wealthy home owners and is a popular place for celebrity spotting and nightlife today.
Transportation
Travelers should be aware that Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is one of the busiest airports in the world. This airport is located about 15 kilometers southwest of city center. You can catch a train from Schiphol to Amsterdam Central Station, which has many connecting routes. It’s typically not a good idea to drive a car to the city center because traffic is heavy and parking is difficult to find.Cycling is incredibly popular here, and it’s easy to find cheap bike rentals around town.Amsterdam has a flat terrain(地形) and is a great city to explore on foot.
Money Saving Tips
Unless you really want to see the tulips(郁金香) blooming, avoid booking between mid-March and mid-May.This is when hotel and flight prices rise.
Look for accommodations in Amsterdam’s South District, where rates are generally cheaper than in the city center.
Buy train tickets at the machine instead of the counter to save a bit of money.
Instead of hiring a tour guide, hop on a canal boat. They’re inexpensive and will give you a unique point of view of the city.
Check out our homepage to view price comparisons for flights, hotels, and rental cars before you book.

If you thought that your child’s academic performance is based simply on the number of hours spent on studying, you are wrong. Good grades are a result of multiple factors, everything from the child’s brains to the environment they are in. And one of the major, mostly ignored, influencing factor is physical health. Physical activity and health actually can improve a person’s ability to learn. According to the National Academy of Medicine, exercise can improve a child’s cognitive abilities, health, and academic performance significantly.
According to a study by the University of British Columbia, regular aerobic exercise betters the functioning of the hippocampus, the area of the brain involved in learning and memory. Other forms of exercise like balance exercises, muscle exercises, and resistance training did not have the same result on the brain.
The effect of exercise on memory and thinking is both direct and indirect. Directly, regular exercise gives the ability to increase the release of growth factors. These growth factors are chemicals in the brain that affect the growth of new blood vessels, the health of brain cells, as well as the survival of new brain cells. On the other hand, getting enough exercise will improve sleep quality and mood. It will also reduce stress and anxiety.
It is believed that the benefits of exercise during the school day are greater than those coming from increasing class time. Furthermore, the greatest cognitive benefits from physical education have been seen to come about when physical education was given either in the first half of the day or midday rather than at the end of the day.
In order to get the children moving, rest time, PE classes, biking or walking to school should be promoted (推动). Activities like after-school sports that used to be held at school should be restarted. Physical activity should not be seen as a dispensable choice but as an important educational concern.
24. Which of the following exercises is best for learning and memory?
A. Regular aerobic exercise. B. Balance exercise.
C. Muscle exercise. D. Resistance training.
25. How does exercise influence thinking indirectly?
A. By releasing growth factors in large numbers.
B. By influencing the growth of new blood vessels.
C. By affecting the survival of new brain cells.
D. By improving a person’s mood and sleep quality.
26. What does the underlined word “dispensable” mean in the last paragraph?
A. Unique. B. Unnecessary. C. Unusual. D. Universal.
27. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Mental health should never be ignored.
B. Physical education class is really a good option.
C. Exercise may bring about good academic grades.
D Different exercises have different results on the brain.
C
If you often exercise, there is a good chance for you to be more creative, according to a study of the links between physical activity and imagination. The study finds that active people come up with more and better ideas during tests of their inventiveness.
It has been proved that physical activity influences our thinking. Many studies show that our brains go through changes in response to physical activity, for during exercise our brains take in more blood, oxygen and nutrients (营养物), thus producing more new brain cells than those who don’t exercise. In this way, exercise raises our moods (情绪) and is likely to improve our abilities to reason and remember.
However, creativity is an abstract (抽象的) thinking skill, whose relationship with exercise has not been clear. Some past research suggested exercise does not directly affect creative thinking.
To learn more about how being active could possibly affect creativity, researchers at the University of Graz tracked the normal activities of a group of healthy adults. They equipped these volunteers with activity trackers for five days. Then they asked them to visit the lab. The researchers then rated their output on its creativity and other measures. The volunteers also completed standardized questionnaires about their moods.
The scientists found that the most active of the volunteers proved to be also the most creative, especially if they often walked or exercised properly. They are also likely to be in high spirits, although their moods were highest if they took part in energetic activities, rather than average ones. However, the link between activity, creativity and moods was light. This suggested that it was not improved moods, but physical activity, that had a greater influence on creativity.
The study didn’t take people’s whole lives into account and cannot tell us how exercise and other activities might shape creativity, if not by raising moods. But the results do suggest that active imaginations start with active lives.
28. How does physical activity change our brains?
A. By making more brain cells. B. By responding to thinking.
C. By supplying more nutrients. D. By increasing blood pressure.
29. What does Paragraph 4 mainly focus on?
A. The purpose of the study. B. The process of the study.
C. The findings of the study. D. The subjects of the study.
30. What do we know from Paragraph 5?
A. Those doing more energetic exercise are the most creative.
B. People’s moods are closely connected with their creativity.
C. Exercise plays a more important role in shaping creativity.
D. Effortless physical activities make people more creative.
31. What is the most suitable title for the passage?
A. Is Exercise Good for Your Mental Health?
B. Can Exercise Make You More Creative?

We all want to give our kids the best possible advice, but when it comes to what path they should explore after education and what career possibilities are out there, where should we start?
“For parents, the most important thing is to keep options open and to understand that equipping them with life skills are important,” says secondary school teacher David Earl.
Your kid will probably have some idea of the terms “growth” and “fixed mindset”. Simply put, the central idea of the growth mindset (思维模式) is that intelligence (智力) and ability can be developed, and children who have this idea will try to seek opportunities to push themselves, understanding that they are likely to achieve what they want if they persevere. This challenges a fixed mindset, the idea that a child’s ability is limited and set in advance.
Help your kid prepare for closed doors, tough interviews, rejection letters by encouraging them to embrace them and understand that none of them is failure. Remind them of things they’ve overcome, suggesting they view every negative experience as a chance to learn and grow, rather than an end point.
Employers lay stress on all kinds of life skills, including problem-solving, leadership and creative thinking. So getting your children to think about those skills is helpful. Barclays LifeSkills has listed skills important for individuals in their future careers — communicating through videos and audio, rather than writing, and working with people from different generations and backgrounds.
Good grades and passing examinations may seem like the most important thing to your kid right now, but try to encourage them to also think of longer-term goals. By thinking of a long-term goal, you may be able to find areas they need to improve.
Thinking about the future can be challenging, but it’s important that your kid understands that the next step is just that one small step. It doesn’t have to be anything as huge as what career to pursue or which course to take. This is a team effort: Ask teachers, friends, or turn to experts for tips.
32. What does the growth mindset stress?
A. A child’s ability can be improved. B. Success comes only from good grades.
C. One’s intelligence stays unchanged. D. Children should avoid challenges to succeed.
33. Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “embrace” in Paragraph 4?
A. Ignore. B. Measure. C. Perform. D. Accept.
34. Which of the following might the writer agree with?
A Children should consider long-term goals instead of good grades.
B. It’s parents’ responsibility to choose their children’ future careers.
C. It’s a life skill to get along with people from different backgrounds.
D. Children should be independent of their parents as early as possible.
35. Who is the above passage mainly intended for?
A. Children. B. Parents. C. Employers. D. Teachers.

D. Different exercises have different results on the brain.
A 25. D 26. B 27. C

根据划线单词句子中“…but as an important educational concern. (而应被视为一个重要的教育问题。)”由此可知,该句为体育活动不应被视为可有可无的选择,而应被视为一个重要的教育问题。故可猜测划线单词dispensable为“可有可无的,不需要的”意思,结合选项B项Unnecessary“不必要的”意思一致。故选B项。
【27题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及第一段中“According to the National Academy of Medicine, exercise can improve a child’s cognitive abilities, health, and academic performance significantly. (根据美国国家医学院的研究,锻炼可以显著提高孩子的认知能力、健康状况和学习成绩。)”可知,本文主要讲述了身体活动和健康可以提高学习能力,而定期的有氧运动可以改善大脑的功能,增强学习和记忆能力。因此这篇文章主要讲的是锻炼可以带来好的学习成绩。故选C项。

A The purpose of the study.
C. What Makes You More Imaginative?
D. How Exercise Improves Your Mood?
A 29. B 30. C 31. B
根据第二段中“Many studies show that our brains go through changes in response to physical activity, for during exercise our brains take in more blood, oxygen and nutrients (营养物), thus producing more new brain cells than those who don’t exercise.( 许多研究表明,我们的大脑会对体育活动做出反应而发生变化,因为在锻炼过程中,我们的大脑会吸收更多的血液、氧气和营养,从而产生比不锻炼的人更多的新脑细胞)”可知,体育活动通过产生更多的脑细胞来改变我们的大脑。故选A项。
根据第四段“To learn more about how being active could possibly affect creativity, researchers at the University of Graz tracked the normal activities of a group of healthy adults. They equipped these volunteers with activity trackers for five days. Then they asked them to visit the lab. The researchers then rated their output on its creativity and other measures. The volunteers also completed standardized questionnaires about their moods.(为了进一步了解活跃如何影响创造力,格拉茨大学的研究人员追踪了一组健康成年人的正常活动。他们给这些志愿者配备了5天的活动追踪器。然后他们请他们参观实验室。然后,研究人员根据他们的创造力和其他指标对他们的产出进行评级。志愿者还完成了关于他们情绪的标准化问卷)”可知,本段详细描述了研究过程,包括给志愿者配备活动追踪器、让他们访问实验室、对创造力和其他指标进行评分以及完成标准化情绪问卷等。因此,本段重点介绍了研究的过程。故选B项。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段中“However, the link between activity, creativity and moods was light. This suggested that it was not improved moods, but physical activity, that had a greater influence on creativity. (然而,活动、创造力和情绪之间的联系并不紧密。这表明,对创造力有更大影响的不是情绪的改善,而是体育活动)”可推知,运动在塑造创造力方面发挥着更重要的作用。故选C项。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,结合第一段中“If you often exercise, there is a good chance for you to be more creative, according to a study of the links between physical activity and imagination. (根据一项关于体育活动与想象力之间联系的研究,如果你经常锻炼,你很有可能变得更有创造力)”以及全文内容可知,文章主要围绕体育活动与创造力之间的关系进行阐述,介绍了相关研究及其发现。因此,B项“运动能让你更有创造力吗?”最能概括文章主旨,最适合作为本文标题。故选B项。
D
A. Children should consider long-term goals instead of good grades.
B. It’s parents’ responsibility to choose their children’ future careers.
C. It’s a life skill to get along with people from different backgrounds.
D. Children should be independent of their parents as early as possible.
35. Who is the above passage mainly intended for?
A. Children. B. Parents. C. Employers. D. Teachers.
A 33. D 34. C 35. B

根据第三段中“Simply put, the central idea of the growth mindset (思维模式) is that intelligence (智力) and ability can be developed, and children who have this idea will try to seek opportunities to push themselves, understanding that they are likely to achieve what they want if they persevere.(简而言之,成长心态的核心思想是智力和能力是可以培养的,有这种想法的孩子会努力寻找机会来推动自己,他们明白如果他们坚持不懈,就有可能实现他们的目标)”可知,成长心态强调的是孩子的能力是可以提高的。故选A项。
划线词embrace后代词“them”指代上文中的“closed doors, tough interviews, rejection letters (闭门羹、艰难的面试和拒绝信)”,结合下文“understand that none of them is failure”和“suggesting they view every negative experience as a chance to learn and grow, rather than an end point.(建议他们把每一次负面的经历都看作是一个学习和成长的机会,而不是终点)”可知,文中提出要让孩子们正确看待“闭门羹、艰难的面试和拒绝信”之类的负面经历,不要把它们看作是失败,要看作是一次成长的机会,即要接受负面经历。
根据第五段中“Barclays LifeSkills has listed skills important for individuals in their future careers — communicating through videos and audio, rather than writing, and working with people from different generations and backgrounds.(巴克莱生活技能列出了个人未来职业生涯中重要的技能——通过视频和音频进行交流,而不是写作,以及与来自不同年代和背景的人合作)”可知,作者会赞同与来自不同背景的人相处是一种生活技能。
根据第一段中“We all want to give our kids the best possible advice, but when it comes to what path they should explore after education and what career possibilities are out there, where should we start?(我们都想给孩子最好的建议,但当涉及到他们受教育后应该探索什么道路,以及有什么职业可能性时,我们应该从哪里开始呢?)”以及第二段中“For parents, the most important thing is to keep options open and to understand that equipping them with life skills are important(对父母来说,最重要的是保持选择的开放性,并理解为他们配备生活技能很重要)”可推知,这篇文章主要是为父母写的。故选B项。

Swim safely!
Swimming is great exercise, and a trip to a pool or beach is a good way to have fun with friends in summer. ____36____, so it’s important to stay safe as you do it. Here are a few things you can do to swim safely.
____37____. Don’t swim unless there is a life guard at work. If you’re on a beach near the ocean, this is especially important. In some places fast-flowing water can move swimmers away without warning. So if a sign says “no swimming”, pay attention to it.
Be careful when diving(跳入)into the water headfirst. ____38____. In natural water, don’t dive unless you know that the water is deep enough. Or you could hurt your head on the bottom, causing injury or death.

One possible version:
Dear Sir/Madam,
I have learned from a newspaper that six bear species in the world are dying out as a result of human activities, so I’m writing to ask you to take immediate measures to protect the bears.
One of the reasons why bears are often killed is that some parts of bears can be used as expensive medicine. In addition, many habitats of bears are being destroyed, so they are losing their homes. It’s high time we took immediate measures to save bears. I think more reserves for them should be set up so that they can live freely. Besides, laws should be passed to prevent people from killing bears. I would appreciate it if you could take my suggestions into serious consideration.
Please give a hand to the endangered bears. They need help to survive.
Yours sincerely,
