Taking pride of place on its west coast is UNESCO-listed Gros Morne National Park. The park’s calling card is an ancient treasure — the Tablelands, a plateau pushed up by tectonic (地壳的) plate shifts and one of only a few places in the world you can walk on the earth’s mantle (地幔). Best for soft adventure: Thousand Islands One of Canada’s smallest national parks, Ontario’s Thousand Islands is located in a region of the same name, and made up of 21 islands and numerous smaller islands in the St. Lawrence River. Formed from the worn-down peaks of ancient mountains, much of it is open for camping — a popular, family-friendly option here. Best for a national park pilgrimage: Banff Canada’s first national park, Banff sits in the palm of the snow-dusted Rocky Mountains and has drawn travellers to its natural hot springs since it first opened in 1885. Those mineral baths also inspired the construction of the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel, a 135-year-old, Scottish baronial-style castle. The action here centres around the skiing town of Banff, but the mountains are home to wildlife such as moose and grizzly bears. Best for wildlife: Jasper Banff’s northern, lesser-visited neighbour, Jasper, is double its size and the largest national park in the Canadian Rockies. A hiker’s region of wild peaks, it’s hard not to bump into wildlife here. Elk, bighorn sheep, and wolves are abundant. Time your visit for spring or autumn when wildlife-watching is at its peak. Non-hikers can enjoy cable-rides for valley views and star-gazing at night — Jasper is the second-largest Dark Sky Preserve, in the world. 1. What makes Gros Morne National Park attractive geologically? A. The availability of camping. B. The Tablelands, an ancient plateau. C. The presence of natural hot springs. D. Its location in Newfoundland and Labrador. 2. Where can you find a family-friendly camping option in Ontario? A. In Banff National Park. B. In Jasper National Park. C. In Thousand Islands Park. D. In Gros Morne National Park. 3. What do Banff and Jasper have in common? A. Their hot season is spring. B. Their hot springs attract tourists. C. They have a history of over 100 years. D. A wide range of wildlife can be found there. B When I was a little girl, I liked drawing, freely and joyously making marks on the walls at home. In primary school, I learned to write using chalks. Writing seemed to be another form of drawing. I shaped individual letters into repeating lines, which were abstract forms, delightful but meaningless patterns. In secondary school art was my favourite subject. Since I loved it so much I thought I was good at it. For the art standardized (标准化) exam I had to present an oil painting. I found it difficult, but still hoped to pass. I failed, with a low grade. I’d been over-confident. Now I’d been declared talentless. But other channels of creativity stayed open: I went on writing poems and stories. Still, I went to exhibitions often. I continued my habitual drawing, which I now characterised as childish doodling (乱画). In my 30s, I made painter friends and learned new ways of looking at art. However, I couldn’t let myself have a go at actually doing it. Though these new friends were abstract painters using oil paints, or were printmakers or sculptors, I took oil painting as the taboo (禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice. One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so convincing that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Accordingly, I started by experimenting with water colours. Finally, I bought some oil paints. Although I have enjoyed breaking my decades-long taboo about working with oil paints, I have discovered I now prefer chalks and ink. I let my line drawings turn into cartoons I send to friends. It all feels free and easy. Un-anxious. This time around, I can accept my limitations but keep going. Becoming a successful painter calls for being determined. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments. 4. What did the author think of her drawing before the standardised exam? A. Discouraging. B. Meaningless. C. Satisfying. D. Empowering. 5. In her 30s, the author ______. A. avoided oil painting practice B. searched for a painting career C. took oil painting seriously D. began water colours as a hobby 6. What attracted the author to oil paintings at last? A. Her ambition. B. Her dream. C. Her grade. D. Her taboo. 7. What can we learn from this passage? A. Practice makes perfect. B. It never rains but it pours. C. Dreams are the reflections of realities. D. Strong will can move mountains. C The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust is looking to hire five people — a base leader, a shop manager, and three general assistants — to work at the “Penguin Post Office” in Port Lockroy, Antarctica. The five-month project is open to UK residents over the age of 18. It will begin in early October 2024 and last until March 2025. Responsibilities will include organizing the over 80,000 letters and postcards sent by the 18,000 tourists or so. Employees will also help sell postage stamps, run the small gift shop, and look after the aging building. But their most important duty will be to keep track of about 1,500 penguins. Exciting as it may sound, the UK Antarctic Heritage Trust warns applicants that the jobs are not for the weak-hearted. Even during summer, temperatures on the icy continent can drop as low as -5℃. Additionally, the five people will live in a single bedroom with a tiny gas-powered kitchen. They will use a camping toilet, which must be emptied daily. There is limited phone and Internet access and no running water. Visiting ships offer workers showers every few days. But in poor weather conditions, they may have to do without a shower for extended periods. Emergency medical services could take up to a week! However, the biggest challenge will be the smell of penguin waste that will surround them for five months! Despite these difficulties, the positions, which open up every summer, receive thousands of applications each year. Camilla Nichol, the Trust’s CEO, is not surprised. She believes that for the right individuals, the jobs provide a unique opportunity to live in a landscape that makes people feel the beauty and power of nature. 8. What do we know about the “Penguin Post Office”? A. It’s open to all British. B. It will run for half a year. C. Its employees will mainly interact with tourists. D. Its positions are only available in the summer of Antarctic. 9. What will challenge applicants most? A. The low temperature. B. No water for a shower. C. The smell of penguin waste. D. Limited access to the Internet. 10. What can be inferred about the project from the passage? A. It is well received. B. It is open throughout the year. C. It needs five more general assistants. D. It offers jobs for the heat-resistant. 11. What’s mainly talked about in the passage? A. Difficulties of living in the Antarctic. B. Individuals wanted by penguins. C. Benefits of working in the Polar Area. D. Challenges penguins are facing. D A research team co-led by a physician-scientist at the University of Arizona College of Medicine — Tucson ’s Sarver Heart Center found that a group of artificial heart patients can regenerate heart muscle, which may open the door to new ways to treat and perhaps someday cure heart failure. According to official statistics, heart failure affects nearly 7 million U.S. adults and is responsible for 14% of deaths per year. The only treatment for advanced heart failure, other than a transplant, is pump replacement through an artificial heart, called a left ventricular (心室的) assist device, which can help the heart pump blood. Sadek led a collaboration between international experts to investigate whether heart muscles can regenerate. The project began with tissue from artificial heart patients provided by colleagues at the University of Utah Health and School of Medicine. The investigators found that patients with artificial hearts regenerated muscle cells at more than six times the rate of healthy hearts. “This is the strongest evidence we have, so far, that human heart muscle cells can actually regenerate, which really is exciting, because it strengthens the thought that there is an intrinsic capacity of the human heart to regenerate naturally,” Sadek said. “It also strongly supports the view that the inability of the heart muscle to ‘rest’ is a major driver of the heart’s lost ability to regenerate shortly after birth.” “It’s not clear why some patients respond and some don’t, but it’s very clear that the ones who respond have the ability to regenerate heart muscle,” he said. “The exciting part now is to determine how we can make everyone a responder, because if you can, you can essentially cure heart failure. The beauty of this is that a mechanical heart is not a therapy we hope to deliver to our patients in the future — these devices are tried and true, and we’ve been using them for years.” Next, Sadek wants to figure out why only about 25% of patients are “responders” to artificial hearts, meaning that their heart muscle regenerates. 12. What is the significance of the new finding according to the first paragraph? A. To help doctors implant artificial hearts in operations. B. To assist researchers to develop artificial heart muscle. C. To help find approaches to treating and even curing heart failure. D. To assist scientists to find new ways to regenerate heart muscle. 13. What is the only treatment for advanced heart failure besides a transplant? A. To implant an artificial heart to replace pump. B. To help the heart pump blood through the body. C. To regenerate the heart muscle by taking medicine. D. To replace patients’ hearts with real human hearts. 14. What does the underlined word “intrinsic” in paragraph 4 probably mean? A. Endangered. B. Acquired. C. Inborn. D. Implanted. 15. What will Sadek study next? A. To figure out why the human heart fails to rest. B. To develop a new artificial heart for “responders”. C. To find the best cure for heart failure for “responders”. D. To work out why heart muscle regenerates merely in some patients. Learning a foreign language is crucial, yet many individuals consider it impossible to master another tongue. As someone fluent in 10 languages, I can witness the advantages of bilingualism. ____16____. Initially, it’s essential to dispel (消除) four prevalent misconceptions about acquiring new languages. Learning a new language can be tough. The truth is that it’s only hard if you don’t really want to learn. It takes some time, but it’s not really complicated. The main things you need to do are listen and read. ____17____. I’ve done it lots of times. Before you know it, you’ll feel really proud of yourself for understanding another language. ____18____. Nonsense. As a matter of fact, whoever wants to learn can learn. In Sweden and Holland most people speak more than one language. They can’t just all be gifted at languages. Foreign athletes in North America usually learn to speak English faster than people in more formal learning environments. In language learning it is attitude, not aptitude, that determines success. You have to live where the language is spoken. Some immigrants to North America never learn to speak more than halting (结结巴巴的) English. ____19____. In 1968, I learned to speak Mandarin fluently while living in Hong Kong, where few people spoke it. With the Internet, language content is available to anyone with a computer, and you can download it to your iPod and listen. Where you live is not an obstacle. Only children can learn to speak another language well. Recent brain research has demonstrated that our brains remain active well into old age. Adults who lose their eyesight have to learn a new language, braille. They have already had a wide vocabulary in their native language. ____20____. The only thing they need is just the willingness to have a shot. A. Trust me, it’s really straightforward. B. However, they found it tough to learn the new language. C. You need to have a natural talent for picking up languages. D. We just need to change our approach to learning languages. E. Therefore, they are more likely to be better at the language than kids. F. You must attend formal classes for language learning instruction. G. I invited my best friend Jane to have a walk in the nearby park. We spent the whole morning happily, catching up on our stories and appreciating the refreshing scenery. To my amazement, she gave me an iron heart-shaped decoration and I hung it on the key fob (钥匙扣) with my keys. Time flew. We had to wave goodbye. At the front door, I dug around in my pockets for the keys. No luck. I returned to the paths we’d taken immediately. I spent an hour looking, brushing aside tall grasses, but the keys remained lost. I was beginning to get upset as I thought of the consequences of losing them, so I continued to retrace our steps, but it was all in vain. At home again, I pulled the backup key from its hiding place, let myself in the house, and fell on the couch in exhaustion. I began to think about my lost keys. The house key wasn’t that important as I had an extra. The mail key was a big deal because getting a new one took a lot of time. I had a spare motorbike key, but it had no remote control. Now my iron heart! It was precious beyond measure. Just thinking of it being gone forever made tears come to my eyes. That night, it turned colder and began to snow. The night was peaceful until I heard the horrific screech (尖叫) of my motorbike alarm blasting from the yard. I rushed to the motorbike, inserted the key and finally the alarm stopped. I felt my face burning as I thought of my angry neighbors. I went back in the house but it alarmed again. I stopped it, went back inside, and the alarm rang again. I repeated the process. Surprisingly, the next sound was the front doorbell. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Thrilled and amazed, I took the keys in my hands. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 听力1-5 ABCAC 6-10 CACCA 11-15 CBCCA 16-20 ABABC 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $ 吕梁市2024—2025学年高二第一学期期末调研测试 英语试题 (本试题满分150分,考试时间120分钟。 1. C 5. A 6. B 7. 由文章第二段中“In secondary school art was my favourite subject. Though these new friends were abstract painters using oil paints, or were printmakers or sculptors, I took oil painting as the taboo (禁忌) high form I wasn’t allowed to practice. (三十多岁的时候,我交了一些画家朋友,学到了欣赏艺术的新视角。然而,我还是不敢真正尝试画画。虽然这些新朋友有的是使用油画颜料的抽象画家,有的是版画家,还有的是雕塑家,但我把画油画当作一种禁忌,认为自己不被允许去尝试这种高级的艺术形式)”可知,在30多岁时,作者避免练习油画。故选A。 由文章第四段“One night, in my early 40s, I dreamed that a big woman in red approached me, handed me a bag of paints, and told me to start painting. The dream felt so convincing that it shook me. It was a form of energy, giving me back something I’d lost. Accordingly, I started by experimenting with water colours. Finally, I bought some oil paints. (在我四十出头的一个晚上,我做了个梦,梦里一个穿红衣服的高大女人向我走来,递给我一袋颜料,让我开始画画。这个梦太真实了,让我深受触动。它就像一股能量,让我找回了失去的东西。于是,我开始尝试用水彩作画。最后,我买了一些油画颜料)”可知,是梦让作者开始尝试画油画。故选B。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是由文章最后一段“Becoming a successful painter calls for being determined. I realised I was always afraid of wanting too much. That dream reminded me that those fears and desires could encourage me to take risks and make experiments. (要成为一名成功的画家需要有决心。我意识到自己一直害怕有太多的欲望。那个梦提醒我,那些恐惧和渴望可以激励我去冒险和尝试)”可知,文章主要讲述了作者从儿时热爱画画到后来不敢尝试油画,再到最后勇敢尝试并享受画画的过程,体现了作者坚强的意志,“Strong will can move mountains (坚定的意志可以移山)”符合题意。故选D。 C The UK Antarctic Heritage Trust is looking to hire five people — a base leader, a shop manager, and three general assistants — to work at the “Penguin Post Office” in Port Lockroy, Antarctica. 8. D 9. C 10. A 11. C 13. A 14. C 15. 根据第一段“A research team co-led by a physician-scientist at the University of Arizona College of Medicine — Tucson ’s Sarver Heart Center found that a group of artificial heart patients can regenerate heart muscle, which may open the door to new ways to treat and perhaps someday cure heart failure.(由亚利桑那大学医学院图森萨维尔心脏中心的一名内科科学家共同领导的一个研究小组发现,一组人造心脏病人可以再生心肌,这可能为治疗心脏衰竭的新方法打开大门,也许有一天可以治愈心脏衰竭。)” 根据第二段“The only treatment for advanced heart failure, other than a transplant, is pump replacement through an artificial heart, called a left ventricular (心室的) assist device, which can help the heart pump blood.(除了移植之外,晚期心力衰竭的唯一治疗方法是通过人工心脏替代泵,称为左心室辅助装置,它可以帮助心脏泵血。)” 故选A。 根据第四段划线单词前文“This is the strongest evidence we have, so far, that human heart muscle cells can actually regenerate, which really is exciting(这是迄今为止我们所拥有的最有力的证据,证明人类心肌细胞实际上可以再生,这真的很令人兴奋)”及后文“the human heart to regenerate naturally(人的心脏自然再生)”可知,人类心脏本身具有再生能力,这是天生自带的能力。 根据最后一段“Next, Sadek wants to figure out why only about 25% of patients are “responders” to artificial hearts, meaning that their heart muscle regenerates.(接下来,Sadek想弄清楚为什么只有大约25%的病人对人工心脏有“反应”,这意味着他们的心脏肌肉再生了。)” Learning a foreign language is crucial, yet many individuals consider it impossible to master another tongue. G. On the contrary, we meet people in Asian countries who speak fluent English. D 17. A 18. C 19. G 20. 【16题详解】 根据上文“As someone fluent in 10 languages, I can witness the advantages of bilingualism.(作为一个能流利说 10 种语言的人,我可以见证双语的优势。)”以及下文“Initially, it’s essential to dispel (消除) four prevalent misconceptions about acquiring new languages.(首先,消除关于学习新语言的四个普遍误解是很重要的。)” 【17题详解】 根据上文“The truth is that it’s only hard if you don’t really want to learn. It takes some time, but it’s not really complicated. The main things you need to do are listen and read.(事实是,只有当你真的不想学习时,学习一门新语言才会很难。这需要一些时间,但并不复杂。你需要做的主要事情就是听和读。)”以及下文“I’ve done it lots of times. Before you know it, you’ll feel really proud of yourself for understanding another language.(我已经做过很多次了。在你意识到之前,你会为自己能理解另一种语言而感到非常自豪。)”可知,此处是在强调学习语言其实很简单。而A选项“Trust me, it’s really straightforward.(相信我,这真的很简单。)” 故选A项。 【18题详解】 根据下文“As a matter of fact, whoever wants to learn can learn. In Sweden and Holland most people speak more than one language. They can’t just all be gifted at languages. Foreign athletes in North America usually learn to speak English faster than people in more formal learning environments. In language learning it is attitude, not aptitude, that determines success.(事实上,任何想学习的人都可以学习。在瑞典和荷兰,大多数人会说不止一种语言。他们不可能都有语言天赋。在北美的外国运动员通常比在更正式的学习环境中的人学英语更快。在语言学习中,决定成功的是态度,而不是天赋。)”可知,这一段主要是在反驳“学习语言需要有天赋”这一观点。而C选项“You need to have a natural talent for picking up languages.(你需要有学习语言的天赋。)” 【19题详解】 根据小标题“You have to live where the language is spoken.(你必须住在说这种语言的地方。)”、上文“Some immigrants to North America never learn to speak more than halting (结结巴巴的) English.(一些移民到北美的人除了结结巴巴的英语之外,从来没有学会说更多的英语。)”以及下文“In 1968, I learned to speak Mandarin fluently while living in Hong Kong, where few people spoke it.(1968 年,我在香港生活时学会了流利地说普通话,而在香港很少有人说普通话。)” 而G选项“On the contrary, we meet people in Asian countries who speak fluent English.(相反,我们遇到一些亚洲国家的人,他们能说流利的英语。)” 【20题详解】 根据上文“Recent brain research has demonstrated that our brains remain active well into old age. Adults who lose their eyesight have to learn a new language, braille. They have already had a wide vocabulary in their native language.(最近的大脑研究表明,我们的大脑在年老时仍然保持活跃。失去视力的成年人必须学习一种新语言——盲文。他们在母语中已经有了广泛的词汇量。)”可知,此处是在说明成年人学习语言的优势。而E选项“Therefore, they are more likely to be better at the language than kids.(因此,他们比孩子更有可能擅长这门语言。)” I used to avoid talking with strangers when I was young. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Surprisingly, the next sound was the front doorbell. Being prepared for a sea of criticism, I opened the door slowly and turned on the light with apologies ready. To my great surprise, in the light snow stood a girl, a neighbor from several streets away. With a small familiar object in her gloved hand, she grinned from ear to ear. “Sorry about all the noise, but I had to depend on the remote control in your key fob to find your home,” she explained. “Oh, my goodness! My keys!” I cried. She handed the keys over, the heart sparkling. Thrilled and amazed, I took the keys in my hands. What a clever neighbor and how timely the help! “Thank you so much. You really saved me from a huge trouble,” I said, feeling an overwhelming sense of appreciation. With a simple “Glad I could help.”, she stepped towards the door and waved goodbye. The snow was still blanketing the ground, but my heart was swelling with warmth. Sometimes, what warms our heart is just a warm-hearted and clever neighbor. 依赖:depend on/rely on ②.大叫:cry /scream ③.帮助:help/aid 情绪类 ①.惊讶:surprise/astonishment/amazement ②.
