“Hello everyone, my name is Zhang Jianna. I’m a worker from Chaoyang Sanitation…”
Recently, a video of Zhang became popular online. Many people were shocked at her fluent (流利的) English and wondered how she had such great English skills. Actually, behind this is a long journey of persistence (坚持).
Zhang comes from a village in Hebei Province. In 2012, she got the job as a sanitation worker in Chaoyang District, Beijing. One day, she met a foreigner. The foreigner spoke a lot of unfamiliar words to her. She didn’t know what to do because she couldn’t understand what the foreigner said. Soon, the foreigner found that Zhang didn’t understand his words. So, he pointed to the street and gave her a thumbs-up while saying, “Good, good!” Zhang suddenly realized that the foreigner was cheering her for keeping the street clean, but she couldn’t say anything to express herself.
This unusual experience touched Zhang, and she made up her mind to learn English. Then, Zhang found her children’s textbooks and started her learning journey. However, learning English at an older age was difficult. Zhang would easily forget the words she learned. But she didn’t flinch from facing up to the challenge. She used all her free time to learn and memorize the words over and over again. Finally, her hard work paid off. So far, she has learned around 3,000 English words and has been able to communicate fluently with foreigners. Zhang said, “Persistence is the key to learning English. Learn step by step and learn every day.”
Now, Zhang’s amazing journey leads to a new goal. She says she wants to introduce her hometown in English to draw more tourists one day.

①Global warming is like a fever for our Earth. It happens when our planet gets hotter because there’s too much of a gas called carbon dioxide (CO₂) in the air. Cars, factories, and even cutting down trees can make this gas.
②Think of Earth wearing a big blanket (毯子); the more carbon dioxide in the air, the thicker the blanket gets. This blanket keeps Earth warm, but if it gets too thick, Earth can get too hot. That’s why we need to keep the blanket just right, not too thick and not too thin.
③When Earth gets too hot, ice at the top and bottom of the world starts to turn into water. This is a problem because animals like polar bears and penguins (企鹅) need the ice to live. It’s also bad because it can make the ocean water rise, and that can flood places where people live.
④The good thing is, there are many clever people coming up with ideas on how to cool our planet down. Helping Earth feel better can start with steps as simple as recycling our trash, enjoying a bike ride instead of taking a short car trip or choosing toys made from materials that are good for the planet. All of us can be Earth’s doctors in a way, making sure it doesn’t get too hot with too heavy a blanket. It’s very important that every one of us takes part in caring for our big home, keeping it just cool enough and just warm enough. After all, taking care of Earth is like taking care of our big family house—it keeps us all safe, healthy and happy.
10. What does carbon dioxide in the air act like?
A. A bet. B. A hamlet. C. A pair of glasses. D. A blanket.
11. What does the word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The rise of sea water. B. The loss of trees.
C. The increase in carbon dioxide in the air. D. The lifestyle of people living in those areas.
12. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. Earth’s fever is dangerous for all living things.
B. People are creating new gases to warm the planet.
C. Polar bears and penguins are helping to save Earth.
D. Steps everyone can take to help cool down the planet.
13. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Animals and Global Warming B. Cooling Down Our Earth
C. The Trouble with Carbon Dioxide D. How to Make Earth’s Blanket Thicker

The subway train is running fast. A boy is reading a book carefully in his seat in the subway while many other people are checking their phones.
To encourage reading, a Chinese company started a book-sharing activity. They put over 10,000 books around the underground, in taxis and on planes in Beijing. Since the activity started, it has earned the support of many people, even some popular celebrities (名人). The book-sharing activity, however, drew much more criticism (批评) than praise because some books were left untouched, or taken away by cleaners. People also complained that they couldn’t reach the books-the underground was too crowded.
________ “I think most people may end up taking selfies (自拍) when they pick up the books and posting on WeChat Moments. After that, they will just bring the books back home and put them on their bookshelves,” wrote one Weibo user.
Some pointed out that some celebrities who supported the activity didn’t seem to be reading much. They just wanted to draw others’ attention. Isn’t it embarrassing that the activity is supported by celebrities who don’t read a lot?
“The book-sharing activity is not at all a bad thing. Over the years, everybody has been busy with work. They don’t have time for reading,” said a famous Chinese writer. “However, it doesn’t mean we should do nothing to encourage reading.”

A. Working is more important than reading. B. The sharing books cause traffic accidents.
C. Chinese people take too many selfies. D. We shouldn’t give up encouraging reading.
17. What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. To show people the value of reading. B. To ask people to return the books on time.

The earliest form of writing appeared about 5,500 years ago. In the past, handwriting was an important subject in school. Now, many students sometimes do homework on a computer and turn in their tasks online.
Many people think typing (打字) is quick and easy to read, while writing by hand may take longer than typing. But others say writing with a pen and paper is more valuable.
Writing by hand has big advantages. Research shows that when we write down ideas with a pen or pencil, we make the brain active to help us learn, remember and think. Writing by hand let s people show their own creativity, because no two people have the same handwriting. Writing by hand can also help people focus their attention. When using a computer, people can go online or play computer games easily.
Handwriting may be pretty, however, people can get their ideas and thoughts down more quickly when they type. Typing can also make it easier for people to change. Once something is written by hand, you can’t delete it. If you want to make a change, you have to write it all over again. What’s more, some people’s hand writing may be hard to read. Typing makes everything clear, and no one will have to worry about their words being clear enough.
42. How long has the form of writing been around?
_______________________________________
43. How is the brain when we write by hand?
_______________________________________
44. How many advantages of typing are mentioned in paragraph 3?

【答案】例文
Hi there, Judy!
I’m looking forward to your exchange visit. Now let me tell you about our school rules.
First, we’re supposed to wear uniforms. They’re comfortable. Second, we can talk freely in group work or when you have questions in class. But I think listening matters before talking. As for the mobile phones, the school is pretty strict. We’re not allowed to bring them to school because the school thinks they will waste our time and influence our study. But the teachers are very friendly and you’ll make friends!
Hope you will have a good time and see you soon!
Love,
Li Xin

14. How does the writer introduce the topic in Paragraph 1?
A. By asking a question. B. By explaining the reason.

A. Most people thought the activity could do little to encourage reading
B. Someone thought most people like taking selfies and writing posts
C. Weibo users thought reading books is less important than taking selfies.
D. Weibo users thought reading books on WeChat is much more convenient
16 What can we learn from the words of the Chinese writer in the last paragraph?
A. Working is more important than reading. B. The sharing books cause traffic accidents.
C. Chinese people take too many selfies. D. We shouldn’t give up encouraging reading.
17. What’s the main purpose of the passage?
A. To show people the value of reading. B. To ask people to return the books on time.
C. To encourage people to stick to reading. D. To advise people not to take selfies.

43. How is the brain when we write by hand?

44. How many advantages of typing are mentioned in paragraph 3?
