You know that classics like Little Women and To Kill a Mockingbird started as novels. But you probably didn’t know that these other famous movies also came from books.
Hidden Figures
This film told the story of real-life Katherine Johnson and other female African-American mathematicians who helped drive the United States into space in the 1960s. It was actually based on a 2016 non-fiction book and the movie did boost sales of the book.
Forrest Gump
The 1994 movie which was based on the book by Winston Groom won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Actor for the star Tom Hanks. Although the movie’s critical and box-office success gave the book a huge boost, it’s the film that made its mark on pop culture history.
The Girl on the Train
Paula Hawkin’s psychological thriller, about a woman on a train who thinks she sees something strange out of the window, was a huge success. But unlike the fast—paced, can’t-be-put-down quality of the novel, the movie was boring.
Field of Dreams
It’s hard to describe the plot of this movie: Ray Kinsella hears a voice telling him to build a baseball field in his Iowa cornfield, and what happens next explores the themes of lost dreams, childhood heroes, and healing the pain of the past. The 1989 movie is based on W. P. Kinsella’s 1982 original, Shoeless Joe, but cuts out some extra characters.
1. Which is the best choice for a person who loves math?
A. Hidden Figures. B. Forrest Gump.

There are lots of scholarship programs in the United States, but Hope Chicago is raising standards.
Through the help of funding (资助) partners, they’ve been able to raise $40 million that will go toward paying the tuition (学费), room, board, and books for thousands of students in Chicago. How are these students chosen? All they have to do is go to one of the five Chicago Public Schools (CPS) that are partnered with the organization.
That’s right-every single student who attends one of these five schools is able to go to one of 20 partnering colleges or trade schools at no cost, including the University of Illinois.
To help encourage students to follow through with their education each child that joins a full-time program may have one parent continue their education for free as well.
The first announcement was at Benito Juarez High School. The students were so surprised by the news that they went almost totally silent and the head teacher, Juan Carlos Ocon, had to repeat what he said.
Upon hearing the news for the second time, a celebration began.
“That’s when the hall of more than 500 students and parents was filled with energy, hopes and dreams,” Juan said. “You could see the tears in the eyes of our students and parents.”
Each person taking part in Hope Chicago is driven by their wish to “reduce economic and social inequality,” said Pete Kaden’s, one of Hope Chicago’s founders.
Hope Chicago hopes to become one of many life-changing organizations to make getting an education easier. In the next ten years, they aim to spend $1bilion to send tens of thousands of students and family members to colleges or trade schools.
“A scholarship program of this size has never been done before, but we are focusing on Chicago’s families most in need,” Pete said. “With that in mind, our goal is to see Hope Chicago positively influence the further education system and serve as a model for the nation.”
4. Who can get scholarships from Hope Chicago?
A. Students, suffering from diseases. B. Students learning in certain schools.
C. Students graduating with honors. D. Students from single-parent homes.
5. How did the students feel after Juan repeated his words?
A. Terribly bored. B. Unbearably sad. C. Completely calm. D. Extremely happy.
6. What is Pete’s attitude toward Hope Chicago?

7. What is a suitable title for the text?

When I was in primary school, I was actually a little shy. One thing that absolutely frightened me was speaking in front of many people, whether strangers or acquaintances. It was my sixth-grade teacher, Mr. Bamick, who helped me overcome that. That year we had to present four oral book reports in front of the class. Some of the kids were even glad to do it, but I was frightened to death. Mr. Bamick recognized my fear, so he told me to do a report on a book that was about something that really interested me. So I did the first report on baseball.
When it came time for me to present it to the class, Mr. Bamick cut me some slack and let me read the report rather than present it from memory. Some of my classmates laughed at me for the presentation, but Mr. Bamick encouraged me. By the end of the year I had completed all four of the oral book reports. It wasn’t easy or comfortable for me, but I did it.
Years later I realized that Mr. Bamick had a great effect on me in sixth grade. One of the opportunities I get when I win a tennis tournament (锦标赛) is to make comments to the fans who attend the match. Some of these are carried live on television and all of them are before thousands of people. It’s still not one of my favorite things to do, but, with Mr. Bamick’s help, I get through it from time to time. Before long, I was asked to bring my favorite childhood teacher to a national event in Dallas. I was excited when Mr. Bamick joined me for the event. It meant a lot to me that he was there.
We all need heroes in our lives. They can be role models or they can be important persons in our world. Mr. Bamick believed in me and helped me to believe in myself. It was he who helped me build the person I became.
8. In what aspect did Mr. Bamick help the author?
A. Improving her learning skills.
B. Winning her classmates’ trust.
C. Encouraging her to read more books.
D. Overcoming her fear of public speaking.
9. What does the underlined part “cut me some slack” mean in paragraph 2?
A. Played a funny joke on the author.
B. Gave the author a feeling of pride.
C. Made the task slightly easy for the author.
D. Asked the author to take part in a competition.
10. What can we infer about the author?
A. She is a spokesperson. B. She is a tennis player.

11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. My best oral book report. B. A typical kid in primary school.
C. My favorite childhood teacher. D. An unforgettable national event.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. C

Years ago, when I was working as a sales manager, there were people on my team who were always the top-performing employees. We all knew how to get the job done, but there were a few who had interpersonal (人际的) skill s and persuasive abilities to land the sales.
To get hired you obviously need to have the necessary skills to complete the required tasks. For example, you’re not going to be interviewed for a position in IT if you don’t know how to work a computer. These kinds of skills are called hard skills. However, many employers are looking for applicants who possess certain soft skills that relate to one’s personality, such as leadership qualities, time management abilities, and communication skills.
The biggest difference between hard and soft skills is how each type of skill is got. While hard skills are abilities learned through education or training, soft skills are more subjective personality qualities that you’re either born with or you develop through life experiences. Hard skills are the technical knowledge you gain through training that get you in the door, and soft skills are the personality qualities that make you a good employee and keep you there.
It’s easy to quantify hard skills because they’re specific and often define the basic requirements of a job. Soft skills are more difficult to measure. But they’re transferable (可转移的) across all industries.
So in addition to hiring people who know what they’re doing, employers look for applicants with a specific set of soft skills that can’t be taught as easily as hard skills. These innate (先天的) personality qualities can be developed, but it takes time, and employers would rather hi re someone who’s already there.
12. Why did the author mention her experience of being a sales manager?
A. To praise her colleagues’wonderful skills.
B. To introduce the topic of two kinds of skills.
C. To stress the importance of interpersonal skills
D. To prove that she has much experience in managing.
13. Which of the following belongs to soft skills?
A. The ability to get knowledge.
B. The ability to interview a leader.
C. The ability to play a computer game.
D. The ability to communicate with others.
14. What is the biggest difference between soft and hard skills?
A. How they are got in our life. B. When they are needed in our work.
C. Which is easier to develop in us. D. Which is more important in daily life.
15 Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Soft skills are as important as hard skills
B. Hard skills can be changed into soft skills
C. Applicants need more soft skills than hard skills
D. Employers put more stress on hard skills than soft skills
【答案】12. B 13. D 14. A 15. A

根据第二段“However, many employers are looking for applicants who possess certain soft skills that relate to one’s personality, such as leadership qualities, time management abilities, and communication skills.(然而,许多雇主希望应聘者具备与个性相关的软技能,比如领导能力、时间管理能力和沟通技巧)”可知,沟通技巧属于软技能,所以D项“The ability to communicate with others.(与他人沟通的能力)”属于软技能。故选D项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“The biggest difference between hard and soft skills is how each type of skill is got.(硬技能和软技能之间最大的区别在于每种技能的获得方式)”可知,硬技能和软技能之间最大的区别在于每种技能的获得方式,就是他们是如何进入我们的生活的。故选A项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段“So in addition to hiring people who know what they’re doing, employers look for applicants with a specific set of soft skills that can’t be taught as easily as hard skills.(因此,除了雇佣那些知道自己在做什么的人之外,雇主们还希望求职者拥有一套特定的软技能,这些软技能不像硬技能那样容易教)”以及纵观全文可知,作者先介绍了硬技能和软技能的定义和区别,然后阐述了软技能在求职中的重要性,并指出雇主在招聘时除了关注求职者的专业技能外,还会考虑其软技能。由此可知,A项“Soft skills are as important as hard skills.(软技能和硬技能一样重要)”适合作本文最佳标题。故选A项。

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a brain disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.

To help encourage students to follow through with their education, each child that joins a full-time program may have one parent continue their education for free as well.
“A scholarship program of this size has never been done before but we are focusing on Chicago’s families most in need,” Pete said.

C. She wants to be a teacher. D. She enjoys commenting on books.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. My best oral book report. B. A typical kid in primary school.

Years ago, when I was working as a sales manager, there were people on my team who were always the top-performing employees. We all knew how to get the job done, but there were a few who had interpersonal (人际的) skill s and persuasive abilities to land the sales.
To get hired, you obviously need to have the necessary skills to complete the required tasks.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Soft skills are as important as hard skills
B. Hard skills can be changed into soft skills
C Applicants need more soft skills than hard skills
D. Employers put more stress on hard skills than soft skills
