“Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. ”
As Robert Frost reminded us, choices are often difficult and will bring both a gain and a loss. Should I spend my Sunday playing golf or taking a day trip to the North Fork with my wife?
If you are a golfer as I am, you will say “Certainly, go playing golf. ” Golf is perhaps the greatest challenge to self-improvement. In golf, every swing is counted and can easily be recalled and reviewed by the golfers as they lie in bed that evening, and therefore, self-improvement is pursued.
Now let us return to the question at hand. You will not be surprised to hear that I did in fact go to the North Fork. But, how has that improved me? Can this be quantified (量化)? In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible, if I average 80 and I shoot a 76, I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my former self and thus feel satisfied.
You may argue that travel is not about self-improvement at all but just about having grand experiences. I beg to differ. It does matter how these things change and improve me. Seeing the folks dancing in the streets should change you. And talking to the manager of the biscuit shop, ought to change you. I think travel does change us, but it’s very hard to say just how. How does one quantify buying a peach at a farm? Or how do you quantify the tasty taste of the scones (司康饼) at a stand?
Reviewers have had a hard time analyzing the meaning of Robert Frost’s poem. To be honest, I would say all of us have a hard time analyzing our wish to travel to faraway places. I am not sure what the answer is to this tricky question. I may not have made any hole-in-ones on the North Fork but I did enjoy those scones.
4 Why does the author quote the poem?
A. To express the meaning of life. B. To explain the challenges the poet met.
C. To show the impact of choices. D. To introduce the general views to choices.
5. What does the author think of playing golf?
A. Its result is measurable. B. It is the most challenging sports.
C. It leads to self-satisfaction. D. It shows the potential for both gain and loss.
6. What is the author’s attitude towards his decision of going to the North Fork?
A. Regretful. B. Unclear. C. Content. D. Doubtful.
7. Which of the following proverb will the author agree with?
A. Rome wasn’t built in a day. B. Every path has its own scenery.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. You can’t judge a book by its cover.
C
Expecting pleasure or pain before tasting hot sauce (酱料) appears to influence how the brain responds to the spicy (辣的) flavour. Brain scans of people tasting drops of hot sauce have revealed how positive and negative expectations can influence brain activity patterns for pleasure and pain.
Yi Luo at East China Normal University and her colleagues employed 47 volunteers — roughly half liked spicy foods and half didn’t — to receive drops of both mild and strong hot sauce in their mouths while lying inside a brain imaging scanner. Computer controlled the liquids sent out not-so-spicy and very spicy sauce, as well as water to clean their mouths, through a bunch of three really long tubes that went right into the participants’ mouths. The researchers conducted one round of experiments without setting expectations. But in the second run, they signaled to participants what intensity hot sauce they would get using different-coloured shapes. An image of two red peppers, for example, signaled the hottest sauce, while one red and one blue pepper signaled the mildest.
The brain scans showed that, for hot haters, the negative expectation of receiving a spicy sample enlarged activity in brain regions that process pain. This provides a “critical warning” for how medical patients’ negative expectations could increase pain, says Luana Colloca at the University of Maryland. By comparison, the positive expectation of receiving a spicy treat boosted a pleasure signature in the brain of hot sauce lovers, but only for the mild version. This represents “parallel subjective realities”, a theory on how expectations shape subjective experiences and perceptions of reality.
“Future studies could investigate how strongly such brain patterns track subjective experiences of pain or pleasure,” says Tor Wager at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. “The broader implications are beyond spicy food,” says Yi Luo. “Understanding how positive and negative expectations influence understanding can inform approaches in medicine. ”
8. What is the research mainly about?
A. How the brain reacts to food. B. How expectations affect feelings.
C. How spicy flavour influences the brain. D. How the brain activity patterns are formed.
9. What can we learn about the experiments in paragraph 2?
A. Participants received three tubes of spicy liquid each time.
B. The second run was conducted without setting expectations.
C. Participants’ brain activities were monitored during the trials.
D. Different images were used to confuse participants’ expectations.
10. What can be concluded from the result of the experiment?
A. Hot haters raise their negative expectations.
B. Participants’ expectations influence their experiences.
C. Hot lovers’ expectations have little impact on the result.
D. Patients’ increasing pain results in their negative expectations.
11. According to the text, which area will the research probably be applied to?
A. Clinical research. B. Psychological test.
C. Medical insurance. D. Restaurant industry.

At a crop breeding (培育) center in Shanghai, researchers have successfully harvested rice that was grown from seeds initially bred on China’s space station, Tiangong. The rice plants have completed a full growth cycle on Earth, maturing after more than 100 days since planting.
This space-to-ground experiment began with 6 rice seeds sent into orbit in 2022 on the Wentian spacecraft. Taikonauts onboard Tiangong bred these seeds into 59, which they returned to Earth. Researchers then selected high-quality seeds, growing them under controlled climate conditions and producing around 10,000 new seeds.
Zheng Huiqiong, a lead researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Center, shared that the team’s findings suggest space-bred seeds can reproduce effectively on Earth, suggesting potential for future space agriculture. Zheng highlighted that the space-bred rice possesses unique traits, such as a higher sugar content, with sugar levels estimated to be five to six times higher than standard rice. The space-bred rice also showed a slight increase in protein content. “That means space-bred rice tastes sweeter and has more energy,” she added.
Space breeding, the method used in this experiment, exposes seeds to space radiation and microgravity, generating gene mutations (基因突变). These mutations are carefully assessed upon the seeds’ return to Earth, sometimes resulting in advantageous traits like shorter growth times, improved disease resistance, and higher output. Zhao Hui, an expert in China Academy of Space Technology, emphasized the safety of space-bred food, explaining that unlike genetically modified crops, space-bred seeds naturally mutate without introducing foreign genes. However, the space-bred rice has fewer leaves, which complicates close planting. Researchers are planning further studies to understand these leaf traits and explore possible genetic changes.
The Tiangong rice experiment marked a milestone for crop science, as it was the first time that rice had completed a full life cycle — from seed germination (发芽) to reproduction — in orbit.
12. What can we know about the space-to-ground experiment?
A. Seeds grown in orbit promise higher crop quality.
B. Seeds bred in space were further grown successfully on Earth.
C New species of seeds grown in space have achieved great success.
D. Climate conditions were controlled when seeds were sent into orbit.
13. What does the underlined words “traits” mean in paragraph 3?
A. Materials. B. Arrangements. C. Disadvantages. D. Characteristics.
14. What does Zhao Hui stress about the space-bred rice?
A. Its security. B. Its artificial process.
C. Its nutrition. D. Its major shortcoming.
15. Which of the following is the best title?
A. Organic Farming: High-quality Planting in Space
B. Space Exploration: A Journey to the Space and Beyond
C. New Planting Approach: Replacing the Traditional Farming
D. Space-to-ground Cycle: Promising Future Space Agriculture

When entering seventh grade, I was excited about many new things, but one thing really bothered me — I started getting acne (长青春痘). Initially, it was just a little, but then, it seemed like overnight, my face was covered with it. I tried to hide it with my hair, but it just wouldn’t work.
I was consumed with worry that my peers would make fun of me. I couldn’t concentrate in class, as my mind was constantly preoccupied with my appearance, causing my grades to slip sharply. I started to feel inferior (自卑的) to my classmates and even avoid interaction with them. I tried to get rid of the acne. I washed my face multiple times a day, using all sorts of acne creams I found. I also avoided snacks that might cause it. But all ended up in vain.
One day, our school announced a sports day and the teacher asked us to form our own teams. As a sports enthusiast, I had been eagerly expecting it, but I was scared that no one would join me because of how I looked. Standing in front of the mirror, I kept imagining how my classmates would react when I asked them to team up with me. The fear of rejection held me back from approaching them.
But then, Kim came to me, “Do you want to join us for the relay race? I’ve seen you run before and you’ve got the speed. If you join us, we’ll have a good chance to win.” In disbelief, I managed to utter “Yes,” still feeling self-conscious but also incredibly grateful.
I together with another three classmates, signed up for the relay race. We trained for it and discussed strategies together, none paying attention to my acne. Because of my advantage in speed, I was even assigned to run the last leg, which was the most crucial part.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

【答案】范文
Then came the long-awaited sports day. My palms were sweaty as I stood at the final position of the track. When the third runner approached, I grabbed the baton firmly and sprinted like the wind. Cheers erupted as I overtook two opponents. Crossing the finish line first, I saw my teammates rushing towards me with joyful screams. To my surprise, classmates patted my shoulder excitedly, their eyes shining with admiration instead of judgment. Kim hugged me, “You’re our superhero!” No one mentioned my acne — they only remembered my flying figure on the track.
The experience was a turning point to my junior life. Gradually I realized people valued my abilities more than my appearance. I started raising my hand in class again and joined the school basketball team. Though acne still occasionally troubled me, I stopped hiding behind my hair. When a new student once asked about my skin, Kim immediately defended, “That’s just his warrior paint from saving our relay race!” We all laughed, and I finally understood true friendship sees beyond surfaces.
