二、读后续写
Possible version 1
Jatin looked up and he saw the other boys rushing ahead. Refusing to give up at this final and key point, Jatin struggled to jump to his feet and ran as fast as he could, though it was so painful for him. Eventually, he was the fourth one to dash across the finish line. Jatin couldn’t help sobbing at the thought of letting his sister down. But much to his surprise, the judge announced the third didn’t belong to the runner who collided with Jatin because he broke the rule and Jatin won the third prize. Jatin felt overjoyed and relieved during the award ceremony, holding the shoes close to his chest.
Filled with pleasure, Jatin walked home in no time. He could not wait to see his sister and share the good news. On his arrival, Jatin found Neha was walking about outside nervously and anxiously. “Neha, see what I have got for you.” Jatin said excitedly, taking the prize out of his bag with his trembling hands. The instant Neha saw the shoes, her face lit up. “Thank you! Jatin.” Tears of joy welled up in their eyes as the brother and the sister hugged tightly together.
Possible version 2
Jatin looked up and he saw the other boys rushing ahead. For a moment, he was in despair. Thoughts of losing the chance to win new shoes for Neha flashed through his mind. But then he remembered his promise. With a surge of determination, he quickly got up and resumed running. Ignoring the pain in his body, he pushed himself harder. He ran with all his might, his eyes fixed on the finish line. As he crossed it, he was exhausted but also filled with hope. When the results were announced, Jatin couldn't believe his ears -- he had come in third!
Filled with pleasure, Jatin walked home in no time. He couldn't wait to tell Neha the good news. When he reached home, he found Neha sitting on the doorstep, looking worried. Jatin rushed towards her, waving the prize in the air. Neha's eyes widened with joy as she saw the new shoes. She hugged Jatin tightly, tears of happiness rolling down her cheeks. Their parents, though surprised at first, were overjoyed to see their children so happy. That evening, the whole family felt a glimmer of hope in their difficult situation, all because of Jatin's determination and love for his sister.

【原文】W: So, what are your plans for this weekend? How about going to see a movie?
M: That sounds like a good idea. Maybe we should go out to eat beforehand.
W: It is fine with me. Where do you want to meet?
M: Let’s meet at Summer House. They’re said to serve healthy food, and not expensive.
2.C
【原文】W: Northwind Airways, good morning. May I help you?
M: Yes, do you have any flights to Sydney next Tuesday afternoon?
W: One moment, please. . . Yes. There’s a flight at 16: 45 and one at 18: 00.
M: That’s fine. I want to make a reservation for economy class ticket at your 18: 00 flight.
3.A
【原文】W: Oh! What are you doing? You can’t throw the recyclable garbage in that red dustbin! It should be put in the blue bin.
M: You mean, I have to put all recyclable stuff in the blue bin?
W: Not all. Plastics go in the blue bin, paper and card in the brown bin, and bio-waste in the green one.
4.A
【原文】M: Hi, Amy. What’s the hurry?
W: Hello, Smith. I’ve heard an art exhibition is being held there. As a student keen on art, I want to visit it. As I happen to have no class this afternoon, I want to stay there for a whole afternoon appreciating the paintings.
M: Well, I don’t like art, as I think it’s boring to learn to paint. Best wishes.
5.C
【原文】W: Henry, I’ve got good news to share. My boss offered me a promotion, and I took it.
M: Are you serious, Emily?
W: Yes, I am really excited.
M: That’s great. Congratulations! You have no idea how happy I am for you. I believe you are the best choice for that promotion. I heard Liza would be promoted to the head of your department before.

【原文】W: Hey, Steve. When is the next time you’re going to play golf?
M: I’m going out this Saturday, but there are already plenty of players this time. Let’s plan for something together next Wednesday. We can go right after work.
W: That sounds good. So I’ll just settle for some reading this Saturday and wait for a golf game with you next Wednesday. We won’t have much time, so let’s play somewhere close to work.
M: How about Bellevue? It’s pretty close.
W: All right. What about 4: 15 pm? I won’t get off until 4: 00 pm.
M: OK. I’ll call you later when I get off work.
W: Sounds good. I’ll see you on Wednesday then.
M: Alright. Have fun on Saturday.

【原文】W: Steve. Is that you? What a surprise to see you here. It’s been a couple of months since I saw you. It’s surprising to see you in such good shape, and have none of the tired look on your face. You must have exercised quite a lot.
M: Well, I just started working out. I joined the Samsung Health Club last month.
W: I should start exercising more. I have a running machine at home. I used to use it, but I already got sick of it.
M: Exercising at home is hard. The environment isn’t suited for exercising. I have a couple of guest passes. If you like, you can use one and checkout my health club.
W: That’s a good idea. Let’s go over the weekend.
M: Great. I’ll call you on Saturday morning.
W: All right.

【原文】W: Did you already take the history exam, George?
M: Yeah. It was hard. When will you take it?
W: I’ll take it tomorrow morning. There is so much material that I don’t know what to emphasize on.
M: For this part of the exam, I suggest you go over the part about the American Civil War. You should also study the impact Martin Luther King Jr. had on American society. But I don’t know whether our teacher Mr. Smith will give you the same exam or not.
W: Hopefully he will use the same exam, because I’m going to spend most of my time studying the Civil War. It is a huge section and that is what he lectured the most on in class.
M: That is probably the best way to go.
W: Alright. Thanks for the information. I’ll go to the library now.
M: Good luck.

M: Sure. I was responsible for the sales service, with about 30 employees.
W: What was the most difficult part of your job?
M: Probably handling angry customers. I needed to make sure they were well taken care of. After all, the customer is always right.
W: That’s how we feel here, too. How long did you work there?
M: I was there for three and a half years. I left the company last month.
W: I see. But the position won’t start until the middle of next month. Would that be a problem for you?
M: No, not at all. In this case, I’ll just spend the time visiting my parents and leading my kids to the beach for fun.
W: That sounds nice. So, why are you interested in this particular position?
M: I know that your company Emoryville has a great reputation and wonderful product. I have thought many times that I would like to be a part of it. When I heard about the opening in Emoryville, I jumped on the opportunity.

【原文】
Historic England is an organization that advises the government on how to look after traditional buildings and places. It has chosen 60 of the best photos from the public for an outdoor exhibition about everyday life called Picturing High Streets. The pictures range from portraits of people to photos of cafes and shops. The exhibition is touring England, starting in Derby from 17 March to 9 April. The photos will be shown in different ways, such as in shop windows and on big advertising boards.
In London, the show will also feature photos by Jamil, who has been working with primary school pupils. Jamil told The Week Junior that a great high street “should be a place where people feel welcome and connected to their local community”. Jamil says that Petticoat Lane, where he took many of his photos, has these important ingredients.

I believe that we can use social media for a lot of great things and it’s important especially for business owners like me. Ever since I started my calligraphy business two years ago, I’ve never spent a day without going on social media, especially a kind of social app on my phone, on which I promoted my products and services and got in contact with possible customers.
Later I found it got in the way of more important things. I hate to say I was hooked by it, but I was. Every time I turned on my phone, I would dive into it. For a long time, I had been ignoring other parts of my life, like my family, my friends and my happiness. One day, I was thinking that a break should have happened long before to me.
Then I decided to remove the app off my phone for a month and only use that on my computer to keep track of my business. I wanted a clean break to reflect and plan for the future.
I had believed that if I spent less time on the platform, I would miss out much. Actually, I was so wrong. During this month off, I became aware that there was much to enjoy in life. I found more time to enjoy my hobbies and contacted my good friends that I had lost touch with. I was refilled with energy in all aspects of my life.
This one month off the app on the phone was healthy for me. If it were not for my business, I would like not to have it on my phone. I downloaded the app again on my phone, but only used it to post my own content. I didn’t intend to paint social media in a negative light, but now I just don’t think the way I was using it was healthy. It’s difficult to find balance, but I’m going to try to do it anyway. I’m going back, but it’s going to be different.
24. What did the author mainly do on social media in the beginning?
A. He connected with his friends.
B. He worked on business activities.
C. He learned calligraphy on his own.
D. He shared advice about keeping fit.
25. What do the underlined words “hooked by” in paragraph 2 mean?
A. Concerned about.
B. familiar with.
C. Addicted to.
D. Frightened by.
26. What did the author learn after removing the social app from his cellphone?
A. It was meaningless to share on social media.
B. There was lots of fun away from social media.
C. The social app contributed little to his business.
D. The social app in the computer was more practical.
27. Why does the author decide to go back to social media?
A. One month away from social media upsets him.
B. He wants to seek more hobbies on social media.
C. He has confidence in balancing social media and life.
D. His friends ask him to communicate on social media.
C
An Inuit-developed app, named SIKU after the Inuktitut (因钮特语) for “sea ice”, allows local communities from Alaska to Greenland to connect traditional knowledge with scientific data to track changes in the environment, and make decisions about how to manage wildlife.
A group of Inuit elders and hunters from Sanikiluaq, Nunavut, thought up the idea for SIKU more than ten years ago to document and understand the changing sea ice they were seeing in southeastern Hudson Bay. The group turned to the local non-profit Arctic Eider Society (AES) to develop a web-based platform.
Over the years, SIKU has developed, and recently, the elders saw that the platform could help address a familiar challenge: sharing knowledge with younger people who often have their noses in their phones. In 2019, SIKU was reintroduced as a full-fledged (全面发展的) social network -- a platform where members can post photos and notes about wildlife sightings, hunts, sea ice conditions and more. The posts tell stories of hunting and traveling; the impacts of climate change and industrial activity; and the traditions, diets and illnesses of local animals.
Inuit communities are already using the app to inform important decisions. In 2021, for example, elders in Sanikiluaq were worried that the local reindeer (驯鹿) population had reduced, so the Hunters and Trappers Association used SIKU to survey hunters and look at recent reported harvest rates. The information led the association to close the hunt for a short time to reduce pressure on the population and to reintroduce hunting slowly when the number of reindeer increased.
Traditionally, Inuit communities shared this information orally. “We have lived in the environment for centuries and know about the wildlife. Now armed with SIKU, information is documented in a way that other people will understand. The advantage of SIKU is that it’s part science and part Inuit knowledge and it supports community-driven research,” says Lucassie Arragutainaq, a co-founder of AES.
28. What was the purpose of developing SIKU in the beginning?
A. To raise money for AES.
B. To pass on Inuit tradition.
C. To attract more visitors to Inuit communities.
D. To record and learn about the changing sea ice.
29. Why is reindeer mentioned in paragraph 4?
A. To further prove the role of SIKU.
B. To advise people to pay more attention to SIKU.
C. To call on visitors and locals to protect reindeer.
D. To tell the benefits of the Hunters and Trappers Association.
30. What is the attitude of Lucassie Arragutainaq toward SIKU?
A. Doubtful.
B. Worried.
C. Puzzled.
D. Supportive.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. SIKU: Overcoming Environmental Challenges
B. SIKU: Informing Decision Of Local Communities
C. SIKU: Joining Traditional Wisdom To Modern Technology
D. SIKU: Advantages Over Other Local Social Media Platforms
D
Male mosquitoes may be nearly as blood-thirsty as females under certain conditions, new research suggests. Male mosquitoes, which are normally disinterested in blood, will take blood meals when they are dehydrated (脱水), the scientist Jason Rasgon of Penn State and his colleagues report in a paper. The finding overturns the idea that only female mosquitoes bite, drink blood and spread diseases. Males may not be totally harmless.
A student in Rasgon’s lab noticed that male mosquitoes would sometimes feed on blood in a tray covered by a thin artificial membrane (人工膜) when researchers took away water. Rasgon wanted to know if thirsty males would try to get blood from a person, so he stuck his hand in cages containing male mosquitoes. Hydrated males mostly ignored him, but dehydrated males would land and examine his skin. One even bit him but hardly got into the first layer of the skin. “I was shocked,” says Rasgon.
Male mosquitoes’ long, tubelike mouth parts aren’t able to bite skin deeply enough to draw blood. But a wound caused by Rasgon’s cat allowed him to test whether males could get blood another way. Sure enough, a dehydrated male mosquito drank blood from the open wound.
In another experiment, male mosquitoes that were genetically engineered to be unable to sense wetness didn’t take blood meals more often when lacking water. Those findings suggest that males may go for blood to satisfy their thirst.
One earlier research paper showed that blood was harmful to male mosquitoes. Scientists thought all male mosquitoes didn’t have the ability to break down blood. But in Rasgon’s experiment, male mosquitoes fed only blood lived as long as those that didn’t get blood, and even a little bit longer.
32. What is discovered in Rasgon’s research according to Paragraph 1?
A. Female mosquitoes may be harmful.
B. Only female mosquitoes drink blood.
C. Male mosquitoes may bite and drink blood.
D. Male mosquitoes are disinterested in blood.
33. How did Rasgon carry out his research?
A. By taking away water. B. By experimenting on himself.
B. By placing his cat in the cage. D. By creating a thin artificial membrane.
34. What didn’t Rasgon expect in his research?
A. Male mosquitoes would be able to bite deeply into human skin.
B. Male mosquitoes would try to drink human blood when dehydrated.
C. Female mosquitoes would become interested in blood when hydrated.
D. Female mosquitoes would prefer water over blood meals when dehydrated.
35. What did one earlier research paper show?
A. Blood would bring harm to male mosquitoes.
B. Blood would make mosquitoes more harmful.
C. Male mosquitoes were able to break down blood.
D. Male mosquitoes fed blood would live as long or longer.

Jatin and his younger sister, Neha, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks (盯着他们).
One day, Jatin took Neha’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed. So he begged his sister to keep it secret. Neha agreed and the two decided to share Jatin’s running shoes. Neha’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Jatin. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Jatin often arrived late and was warned by the school.
A long distance race was going to be held for the boys in the city. When Jatin learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Jatin had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Neha and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided (碰撞) with Jatin from behind and Jatin fell on the ground.
