One evening in my fourth year of a Ph. D., an unexpected call came from Avadhoot’s mother “He’s missing, ” she said shakily. After an argument with his father, he left home. We’d been friends since primary school, and though I was now in a different city, we still met when I visited home. Suddenly, my Ph. D. troubles like endless lab hours, failed experiments, and publication stress seemed insignificant. I was extremely worried. How could he, always so calm and a good listener to my complaints, reach this point?
The Ph. D. journey had been difficult. Experiments progressed slowly, and the competitive atmosphere made me doubt myself. This stress came into my personal life. I became self-centered, consumed by my own challenges. When friends and colleagues told me about their problems, I listened but rarely paid real attention. However, I was lucky to have a friend like Avadhoot. During breaks at home, we walked and talked about traffic and train trips. Gradually, our conversations focused on my Ph. D. problems. I expressed the unfairness of academia. But he rarely talked about his plans. Instead he listened patiently and always encouraged me to push through, reminding me that the journey was just as important as the destination. When asked about his life, he would say simply, “It’s not too bad. ” I admired his quiet strength and sometimes envied what I saw as his relatively simple life.
Then came the call. Days later, he was sound and safe. I learned the truth. Growing up, Avadhoot had faced huge academic pressure from his father. While trying to complete his master’s degree, he had many mental breakdowns and couldn’t finish, instead taking a job at a call center — all without telling his family. When his father finally found out, he felt disappointed and told Avadhoot to leave home immediately. In anger, Avadhoot left and found work at a nearby port as a daily wage laborer. A coworker got him reunited with his family and reconciled (使和解) his father.
I felt guilty. His apparent strength hid a heavy load, and I had been so focused on my own struggles that I had failed to notice or inquire more deeply.

【答案】One possible version
This experience changed the way I interact with friends and colleagues. I realized that everyone has their own struggles, and sometimes they are hidden beneath a calm exterior. I began to pay more attention to the people around me, not just to their words but also to their emotions and the unspoken burdens they might be carrying. I made a point of being more empathetic and supportive, asking more questions and offering a listening ear without judgment. I learned that true friendship isn’t just about sharing successes but also about being there during difficult times. This shift in my attitude not only helped me become a better friend but also improved my relationships with my colleagues.
Now, as a postdoc, I carry these lessons with me and make a conscious effort to listen carefully. In my new role, the pressure is still high, but I no longer let it consume me. I remember Avadhoot’s quiet strength and his ability to find joy in simple things. I try to bring that perspective into my work, focusing not just on the end goal but also on the journey. I also make time to check in with my colleagues, offering encouragement and support when needed. I’ve found that by being more present for others, I’m also more present for myself. This experience taught me that growth comes not only from overcoming our own challenges but also from understanding and supporting those around us.

On a warm summer evening, my wife and I were on our way to the grocery store, when I noticed a man
sitting on the pavement under a street light. Something about him made us stop. He sat motionless with his gaze blankly fixed on an object only he could see. His beard was long and messy, so was the hair on his head. A discarded advertisement banner wrapped rudely around his waist was his only protection. The vacant look in his eyes indicated he was possibly incapable of normal mental function.
We tried asking him a few questions, but he showed no signs of having heard or understood us. He just sat there, staring into the darkness, ignorant of our presence. It was quite apparent that he was a beggar in need of help and we thought a while about what we could do. "He looks starving," my wife remarked, "but there is no point in giving him money." I agreed. "We'll buy him a loaf of bread instead," I suggested.
It took us a while to finish our shopping. When we returned to the spot where we had first seen the beggar, he wasn't there. We looked around, but there was no sign of him. Disappointed, we decided to go home, wondering what to do with the loaf of bread. We'd barely gone a hundred meters when we spotted the beggar in the distance: he crossed the road and was seated with a family of migrant labourers outside a shabby tent. Surprisingly, none of the family members seemed to mind this unexpected guest's presence. In fact, he looked to be quite welcome. The family had accepted him without question, just as if he were a visiting relative or a close friend.

Curious, I stopped my motorcycle and watched with my wife.

These were people who had no roof over their heads.
________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version
Curious, I stopped my motorcycle and watched with my wife. The beggar was now sitting among the family, sharing a simple meal with them. Despite their own lack of resources, the family offered him a place to sit and food to eat. They laughed together, and for a moment, the man’s vacant expression softened. It was as if he had found a temporary home, a place where he was accepted without judgment. My wife and I exchanged glances, realizing that this family, though poor themselves, had shown a kindness that was truly inspiring.
These were people who had no roof over their heads. Yet, they were rich in humanity and compassion. We decided to give the loaf of bread to the family, hoping it could add a little more to their meal. As we handed it over, the family thanked us warmly, and the beggar smiled for the first time since we had seen him. It was a small gesture, but it felt like it made a difference. We left with a sense of fulfillment, knowing that sometimes, the simplest acts of kindness can mean the most.

A Game of Growth
The gym was alive with the sounds of squeaking (嘎吱作响) shoes, bouncing basketballs, and teammates shouting plays. It was game day, and I should have been focused, but my mind was elsewhere. My thoughts dragged me down, and I couldn’t shake the heaviness I felt.
Every time I passed the ball, Ryan, one of our best players, would make some snide (挖苦的) remarks: “Can’t you aim better, Eliot?” or “Guess we know who won’t be taking the game-winning shot today.” His words cut deep, feeding my doubts. I wanted to fire back, but the energy wasn’t there.
Coach Rivera noticed something was off. “Eliot, can I talk to you for a second?” he said after practice. His voice was calm but firm, the way it always was when he saw something wrong. I sighed, knowing I couldn’t avoid the conversation. “Yeah, Coach?” He studied me for a moment, his eyes serious. “You’re not yourself lately. I’ve also noticed there’s tension between you and Ryan. What’s going on?”
I hesitated, then said, “Nothing, I’m fine.”
Coach didn’t buy it. “I’ve been around long enough to know when something’s weighing on a player. You’ re not just dealing with basketball issues, are you?”
I finally admitted, my throat tight and my eyes starting to water, “I have some family problems…my parents had an accident, and I’ve had to take care of them.”
Coach nodded, understanding. “That’s a lot to handle. But Ryan... he’s a tough guy, and you two are teammates, and the team only works if you’ re united. Let’s talk things through.”
The next day. Coach pulled Ryan and me aside. The conversation was awkward at first. Ryan explained that he felt I wasn’t pulling my weight in the games. I told him about my situation though I didn’t go into details.
Ryan’s expression softened. “I didn’t know you were dealing with so much. I’m sorry for pushing you too hard,” he said. “I could’ve handled it better,” I admitted.

With Coach’s help, Ryan and I started working together instead of against each other.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
In the championship game, Ryan passed me the ball for the game-winning shot.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
With Coach’s help, Ryan and I started working together instead of against each other. We found a rhythm on the court that we hadn’t had before. Ryan made an effort to understand my situation off the court and offered his support. Our teamwork improved, and so did our performance. The atmosphere in the gym became more positive, filled with encouragement. It was about overcoming challenges together. Coach reminded us that growth often comes from facing adversity, and through this, we learned lessons beyond the sport.
In the championship game, Ryan passed me the ball for the game-winning shot. Time seemed to slow as I took the shot. It wasn’t just about scoring; it symbolized all we’d been through. The crowd cheered as the ball went in. This victory felt sweeter because it showed our growth and the strength gained off the court. Ryan’s trust during that moment proved we had turned a corner. We didn’t just win a game; we strengthened our bond as teammates and friends.

On September 17, 2022, Jeff Agar, 59, and his son Johnny, 28, set out to begin the first of three parts of the Ironman competition in Cambridge, Maryland. Johnny has cerebral palsy (脑瘫), which makes walking difficult due to muscle weakness. Jeff would act as his son's arms and legs, carrying him through the race. To finish, they needed to complete 140 miles of swimming, bicycling, and running in under 17 hours.
From the day Johnny was born, Jeff and his wife, Becki Agar, refused to let their son's disabilities hold him back. When Johnny was 15, they signed him up with Team Triumph, an organization that helps kids with disabilities participate in endurance sports. "It gave me a new perspective on life," Johnny says. "All these people were pushing themselves to their own goals." Johnny became passionate about racing, and Jeff wanted to be part of it. Jeff, a manufacturing company COO, began waking up at 4 a.m. to run while pushing Johnny in a racing chair. Despite being a former minor league baseball player, endurance sports were new to him. Soon, they were entering 5K races and then Ironman triathlons in 2016. "I wanted to fulfill his dreams," Jeff said. "I started doing things I never would have dreamt."
The race began with a 2.4-mile swim in the Choptank River. Jeff and Becki helped Johnny into a kayak, with one end of a rope tied to a harness (背带) around his back and the other to the kayak. Jeff eased himself into the water. Swimming while pulling another person is tough enough, while the pair struggled to complete the swim in 90 minutes and moved on to the 112-mile bicycle ride. Their custom-built racing chair allowed Johnny to be pushed while Jeff cycled. They completed the ride in about 9 hours and prepared for the final part: a 26.2-mile marathon. They had been competing for 10 hours, leaving another 6.5 hours to make their time.
At mile 19, Jeff began to panic, fearing they were moving too slowly.

【答案】One possible version
At mile 19, Jeff began to panic, fearing they were moving too slowly. His muscles were aching, and his energy was waning, but he couldn’t bear the thought of letting his son down. He knew that every step was a battle against time and exhaustion. Johnny, sensing his father’s struggle, encouraged him with words of support. “You’re doing great, Dad,” he said. “We’ve come this far, and we’re going to finish together.” Jeff took a deep breath and pushed on, drawing strength from his son’s unwavering belief in them. The crowd along the route cheered them on, their voices fueling Jeff’s determination. Mile after mile, they pressed forward, driven by the bond that had brought them to this point.
With just 4 minutes to spare, father and son crossed the finish line together. Exhausted but elated, Jeff and Johnny embraced, their faces beaming with pride. They had faced incredible challenges, but their perseverance and love for each other had carried them through. As they stood among the finishers, they knew that this race was more than just a test of physical endurance—it was a testament to the power of family and the human spirit. Jeff had fulfilled his son’s dreams, and in doing so, had discovered his own strength. “We did it,” Johnny said, his voice filled with emotion. “We did it together.”

When I started my high school journey in an unfamiliar town, everything felt strange, from the sounds on the streets to the color of the sky. Loneliness was my constant companion, a reality that pained me deeply. I was floating in a sea of anxiety, lack of companionship.
Then, Emily entered my world. Our familiarity blossomed during my second week, perhaps because we sat close or had a shared task. I can’t remember how it began, but it changed everything. Emily’s warmth, humor, and approachability were a breath of fresh air. For the first time, I sensed a possibility of belonging.
However, the arrival of Jane, a girl in a wheelchair, broke my newfound balance. I first encountered her in class, who sat beside Emily, occupying my usual seat. Jane didn’t notice me, and I had to find another seat. It happened again and again, and I started to feel anxious. I told myself she was doing it on purpose, trying to push me out and take Emily away. But there’s a thing I had to admit that she always knew how to make people laugh.
I began to hate Jane. She seemed so comfortable and confident making me feel small. I was upset that Emily didn’t notice my unease, and I felt like I was fighting to hold onto the only thing I had. I felt powerless, like I was standing on a shaky edge.
But then, Jane and I started talking. At first, it was just small talk during group discussions or quick hellos. She’d ask questions that bothered me, and I’d answer shortly, trying to end the conversation. But she’d let my words hang, waiting for me to fill the silence, and sometimes I did.
Gradually, our conversations became less unfriendly. Jane’s sharp wit and ability to command a room with her laughter started to grow on me. I found myself laughing along with the group, even when I tried to resist.

An incident brought Jane close to me. During a group project, we were assigned to work together. At first, I was reluctant and kept my distance, but Jane’s enthusiasm was infectious. She encouraged everyone to share their ideas and made sure everyone felt included. When I struggled with my part of the project, she offered help without making me feel inferior. Her kindness and understanding broke down my walls. We ended up finishing the project successfully, and I realized that Jane’s confidence wasn’t meant to overshadow me, but to lift everyone up. By the end of the project, I found myself genuinely enjoying her company.
Emily also became the facilitator of our friendship. She noticed the change in our interactions and encouraged us to spend more time together. She organized small gatherings where we could talk and share our interests. Emily’s support helped me see that there was room for both Jane and me in her life. Gradually, we became a close-knit group, supporting each other through highs and lows. I learned that jealousy and insecurity were unnecessary. Instead of feeling threatened, I embraced the friendship and found that it enriched my life in ways I had never imagined.

My new dog Honey, ran after me as I walked to my car. I’d adopted her only three weeks before, but we’d become nearly inseparable. I’d had an operation a few months back. I figured taking care of a dog would keep me active. Honey followed me like a shadow from the very first day. That morning I decided to take her with me while I went out.
We lived in a remote area up in the hills. I had to drive up the mountain to get to our driveway, which was barely wide enough for one car and ends at a drop- off. I turned around and backed up slowly. Just then, a flash of sunlight blinded me. I put my hand up to shade my eyes. I felt a jolt (颠簸) as the car dropped. Oh, no! The edge! The car slipped into the soft soil and rolled. We landed upside down. I felt a great pain in my chest and leg. I couldn’t move. I looked over to find Honey. Luckily, she was okay. I grabbed my cellphone and dialed 911. Just as I’d feared, I couldn’t get a signal.
I figured we were at least 50 feet down. Robin. my closest neighbor, lived a quarter mile uphill from me and had her own driveway. There was no reason she or anyone else would drive up to my house. And even if someone did, they wouldn’t see us.
Honey barked. At least I could get her out. There was a hole in the driver’s side window. Painfully, I reached over and picked her up. I gently put her head through the hole. “Go home, baby.” She jumped to the ground and ran away.
Now what? Maybe the horn (喇叭). I tried, but couldn’t get it to work. I sat there for hours. The last bit of light disappeared gradually. Now, as the sun set, the air turned cold. So tired. All I had to do was close my eyes ...

【答案】One possible version
Suddenly, I was jolted awake by the noise of a car. I opened my eyes and saw Robin’s car pulling up beside mine. She had found Honey at my house and followed her to the scene. Robin quickly called 911, and soon an ambulance arrived. The paramedics carefully pulled me out of the car and took me to the hospital. I was in pain, but knowing that Honey had led Robin to me made me feel incredibly grateful. I had never imagined that my little dog would save my life.
Back in my sickroom, I asked Robin, “Why did you drive up to my house?” Robin smiled and said, “Honey came to my door, barking and pulling at my clothes. I followed her and she led me straight to your car.” I realized that Honey’s loyalty and determination had made all the difference. She had not only stayed with me during the accident but had also found help when I couldn’t. I was truly blessed to have such a brave companion.

In 2020, when she was just 10 years old, Angela Zhao entered her first piano competition. On the day of the event, each participant had to go up onstage one by one and perform their piece in front of a panel of judges and an audience. At first, Angela was excited and confident, as she had been preparing for months, practicing diligently every day under the guidance of her piano teacher. However, as her turn approached, doubts began to flood her mind. "What if I play the wrong notes? What if I forget the notes? What if I just mess up?" Angela remembered thinking.
As these worries raced through her mind, Angela watched another girl perform. The girl played beautifully. Angela couldn't help but feel kind of jealousy and admiration. Once the girl finished, she walked offstage to where Angela was waiting and did something unexpected.
“She looked at me and smiled with a thumb up," Angela said. The simple gesture took Angela by surprise. "Her smile made me think that today I'm just right and I can perform on the stage." Encouraged by this act of kindness, Angela took a deep breath and walked out to the piano. She sat down, closed her eyes for a moment to steady herself, and then began to play. As her fingers moved over the keys, she felt a sense of calm wash over her. The notes flowed effortlessly, and she lost herself in the music. When she finished, Angela looked up and saw her competitor clapping for her, a genuine smile on her face. Seeing such a show of support has stuck with Angela over the years. “As a competitor, she gave me respect and helped a shy girl to face the stage," Angela said. If she could talk to that girl again, here's what Angela would say: "You changed a moment of my life. And your kind smile remained in my memory. And I'll take that smile as a precious gift."
Several years have passed, but Angela always takes a moment to reflect on the power of a simple smile.

【答案】One possible version
Several years have passed, but Angela always takes a moment to reflect on the power of a simple smile. She realized that a small act of kindness can make a huge difference in someone’s life. Whenever she felt nervous or anxious before a performance, she would remember that smile and feel a sense of calm. It became a reminder that everyone has their own struggles and that a kind gesture can provide encouragement and support. Angela learned that true strength lies not just in talent, but in the ability to uplift others.
Angela's experience also inspired her to help others. She began volunteering at a local music school, teaching piano to children who might not have the opportunity otherwise. She made it a point to offer a smile and a word of encouragement to each of her students, hoping to pass on the same kindness she had received. Angela believes that music has the power to connect people and that a simple smile can create a lasting impact. By sharing her skills and kindness, she hopes to inspire others to face their challenges with confidence and grace.

Peter Potter liked soccer since he was a little boy. His dad would hold his hand and guide him to follow the ball. He got better and better and was good enough to play for his first team when he was six. His wish finally came true when he got his first team shirt.
“I can’t wait for game day!” Peter announced. “We’ll dress up as a team and score so many goals!”
Game day was his favorite day of the week. But there was another soccer day that Peter did not expect. “Huh? Why do we have two schedules?!” Peter was confused. “A practice schedule?!”
Peter’s mood suddenly changed. He didn’t want to have practice days. To him, practices were too hard and boring. It didn’t seem exciting or challenging because it wasn’t a real game. The goals didn’t matter as his team couldn’t win or lose. There was no cheering, or pats on the back (表扬)!
“This isn’t fair!” Peter thought. “I only want to go to games.”
But Peter had to attend the practice sessions too. He couldn’t play games unless he went. And so he did. But you know what? He didn’t do his best. With so little effort, Peter’s skills soon got worse.
One day, Peter’s team played an important game. His team was the better team, and they expected to win. Peter couldn’t wait for that winning feeling! At the very beginning, they had a chance to score. A teammate passed the ball to Peter, who was right in front of the goal. But Peter wasn’t quick enough and lost the ball. Soon, Peter got a second chance. He was all alone in front of the goal. He received the ball and carefully kicked it to score. He tried so hard at that moment, but his aim was off target, and he completely missed it. The ball flew high above the net.
By the end of the game, Peter missed five out of seven chances to score! They lost the game. Everyone was disappointed, even Peter.

【答案】
After the game, their coach Harry needed to talk to Peter. He had already noticed that Peter hadn’t been putting in much effort at practice. “Peter, what happened today?” Coach Harry asked. “And not only today. We need to talk about the practices.” “But I always come to practice. I haven’t skipped even once!” Peter started explaining. “Showing up isn’t enough! You have to try hard. ‘Practice makes perfect!’ remember?” Coach Harry said. Feeling a little guilty for his poor performance, Peter now was encouraged by the coach’s words and decided to train hard.
At the next practice sessions, Peter was always the first one to arrive. Peter trained harder than any of his teammates. He would always arrive earlier and stay longer when everyone left. He even practiced alone during weekends. As time went by, Peter became a better teammate and a better player. Everyone noticed his fantastic skills. Coach Harry was so proud. They won the following big game! After that, Peter kept practicing the same way as his coach had told him and learned that nothing comes so easy.

When Sabrina heard her dad Pete Parker, a coal miner, parking his van (货车) in the garage, she kept switching channels on the TV, hoping he wouldn’t ask her about her upcoming graduation that was scheduled in two days. She feared her dad would ruin her graduation for looking “dirty” and smelling of coal and sweat.
“Hey, sweetheart! Look what I got for you, ” Pete said as he entered, sounding happy. Then he left two packages on the table.
Sabrina was surprised and quickly unwrapped one box and found a beautiful dress inside She loved it very much. Then she opened the other box and saw a new suit in it.

Encouraged by this act of kindness, Angela took a deep breath and walked out to the piano. She sat down, closed her eyes for a moment to steady herself, and then began to play. As her fingers moved over the keys, she felt a sense of calm wash over her. The notes flowed effortlessly, and she lost herself in the music.
