During the week-long National Day holidays in 2024, the mysterious Ailao Mountains in Yunnan Province, southwest China, became very popular.
It started when an online video showed the mountains looking foggy (多雾的). There were warning signs saying “bears nearby”. This made people feel a bit scared but excited. Soon, lots of tourists wanted to see the mountains themselves.
The Ailao Mountains are located in the central part of Yunnan and cover three cities. Some people call these mountains the “Forest of Death” because of the deep valleys (山谷), the thick forests, and the changing weather. The mountains are known as one of the biggest and least touched parts of the world. They are so far away and natural, and there are many “mysterious stories” about them.
The government there said tourists can only visit the opened areas and follow the rules to keep safe. Forests there are so beautiful that tourists will never regret visiting the mountains. But they can’t go deep inside the mountains because there are no roads. The weather there can be very bad, making people feel sick. Also, the magnetic field (磁场) there makes it easy to get lost. It can be very dangerous.
So, it’s necessary to respect (尊敬) nature and follow the rules when visiting such places!

Elephants are the largest living animals on land. They can weigh about 7,000 kg and be 4 meters high. There are two species of elephants—Asian elephants and African elephants.

They live in family groups. Elephants communicate over long distances with very low sounds. People can’t hear them!

Elephants still live in some parts of Africa and Asia, but they have disappeared from West Asia, Java, and most of China. Why are elephants disappearing? One reason is that people have been killing elephants for their ivory. Another reason is that people have been destroying the elephants’ homes to use the land.

Grandma called me in from the yard. “Would you please go to the store for me, Emma? I’m ready to make cakes, but there aren’t enough eggs. Take 20 dollars from my wallet.” I found Grandma’s wallet and put the money in my pocket.
I arrived at the store soon. “Mr. Jenkins,” I said, “Grandma needs some eggs.” Mr. Jenkins set the eggs on the counter (柜台). He smiled at me. “And what else do you need?” I knew what he meant. I was always allowed to pick a piece of candy when I came to the store with Grandma. “How much change do I have from 20 dollars?” I asked. “Seven dollars.” Mr. Jenkins replied. I thought about that quickly. I was sure Grandma wouldn’t care if I spent two dollars. The longer I looked at the candy display, the more certain I became that I needed two dollars’ worth as a reward for coming to the store alone. And I did so.
“Thank you, Emma,” Grandma said when I laid the eggs on the table. “Did you put the change back in my wallet?” “Yes, Grandma.” I replied, hurrying out to the yard. “I hadn’t really lied to Grandma,” I argued with myself. “I did put back all the change I had.”
But I had spent two dollars without Grandma’s permission (允许). The second piece of candy in my pocket didn’t sound like a good idea any more. I knew I had lied to Grandma, and I was unhappy about it. Grandma is so kind that I couldn’t bear to keep anything from her.
When Grandma took the hot cakes from the oven (烤箱), I told her about the candy. She nodded when I finished my story. “I know just how you feel,” she said. “I’m glad you told me about the dollars. You are an honest kid and of course I’ll forgive you.” Suddenly I felt relaxed as though a big stone was gone from my stomach.

The sad news about elephants is that they are endangered, or in danger of becoming extinct. The number of elephants has been decreasing for many years.
