We walked in so quietly that the nurse at the desk didn’t even lift her eyes from the book. Mum pointed at a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to sit down. While I watched mouth open in surprise, Mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop. She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse looked up, Mum nodded and said, “Very dirty floors.”
“Yes I’m glad they’ve finally decided to clean them,” the nurse answered. She looked at Mum strangely and said, “But aren’t you working late?”
Mum just pushed harder, each swipe (拖一下) of the mop taking her farther and farther down the hall. I watched until she was out of sight and the nurse had turned back to writing in the big book.
After a long time Mum came back. Her eyes were shining. She quickly put the mop back and took my hand. As we turned to go out of the door, Mum bowed politely to the nurse and said, “Thank you.”
Outside, Mum told me, “Dagmar is fine. No fever.”
“You saw her, Mum?”
“Of course. I told her about the hospital rules, and she will not expect us until tomorrow. Dad will stop worrying as well. It’s a fine hospital. But such floors! A mop is no good. You need a brush.”

Courage is a huge theme in my life, a quality I constantly seek, appreciate, and analyze. The root of “courage” is “cor,” the Latin word for heart. In the beginning, courage meant “to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.” While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays, I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel.
I recently witnessed an example of true courage. During a mountain-climbing trip with my 15-year-old daughter and some college students, I noticed her struggling to keep up with the group. Despite my suggestions to rest, she persisted until she couldn’t breathe properly.
Panicked, I called out to the front for help, but there was no response, and we had no cellphone signal. Fortunately, two students just came back to check out on us. They offered assistance and calmed us down. As we continued at a slower pace, they shared their own experiences, from starting out as beginners like my daughter to becoming consistently among the first to reach the peak.
“You know,” one of them said, looking at my daughter, “I was just like you when I started.
But with practice and proper pace, you’ll get there too.”
“Yeah, don’t let your lack of experience stop you,” the other added. “It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling or not feeling alright. In fact, it’s important to speak up and ask for help when you need it. That’s how we improve and grow.”
Reaching the mountain top was a huge relief for both my daughter and me. However, the two students addressed the celebrating group directly, emphasizing the importance of staying together in tough environments. Their words led the group to apologize to us for overlooking our struggle.
I was totally amazed at their bravery, and my daughter learned that it’s okay to be the least experienced in a group. Courage, I’ve come to realize, has a ripple effect. Each time we choose courage, we inspire those around us to be a little braver and make the world a little better.
28. Why does the author mention the original meaning of courage?
A. To question the common belief of courage.
B. To argue for the true nature of courage.
C. To show the changing meaning of courage.
D. To compare different interpretations of courage.
29. What did the two students suggest the daughter do?
A. Keep to a suitable pace. B. Seek help whenever possible.
C. Challenge her own limits. D. Stick with experienced climbers.
30. Which action in the mountain-climbing story is an example of true courage?
A. The mother asked the girl to rest.
B. The girl tried hard not to fall behind.
C. The two students pointed out the group’s fault.
D. The group celebrated the reach of the mountain top.
31. What does the author intend to tell us?
A. Kindness connects us all. B. Being a beginner takes courage.
C. We don’t have to be a hero to be brave. D. With courage, everyone can be perfect.
D
Zoos divide opinion: there are those who think it is cruel to keep animals locked up while others believe zoos are essential for the survival of endangered species.
To argue that zoos imprison animals is to misunderstand what zoos are about. Without zoos many of the creatures we love and admire would no longer exist. Every single day, over one hundred animal species vanish. Scientists predict that as early as 2050 one quarter of the Earth’s species will become extinct.
Some animals are in danger because they are hunted. Alarmingly, the population of tigers has already fallen by ninety-five percent. Other species are in danger because of a lack of food. For example, there are fewer than 1300 giant pandas left in the wild.
Zoos have special breeding programmes to help those animals at risk. These breeding programmes are proving extremely successful. As Irene Shapiro from Zoo and Wildlife Support says, “the Puerto Rican Parrot has grown in numbers from just thirteen to about eighty-five and the Golden Lion Tamarin Monkey, which has almost ceased (停止) to exist twenty years ago, has been reintroduced back into the wild.”
Unfortunately, not everyone understands this important role zoos play. For example, Brian Featherstone from the Anti-Zoo Forum says, “I can’t believe we take animals from the wild and put them in cages for the entertainment of the public! We should view them on film or TV in their natural environment.”
However, this misses the point. A zoo does more than display animals to the public. It ensures their survival. Without zoos you would not be able to see many of these animals on TV or anywhere else!
32. What’s the writer’s attitude towards zoos?
A. He shows no opinion either for or against them.
B. He thinks that they are unnecessary and cruel.
C. He believes they play an important environmental role.
D He expresses a desire that more of them be built.
33. The underlined word “vanish” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _______.
A. remain B. disappear C. become rarer D. get killed
34. According to the passage the world’s tiger population _______.
A. will rise by 5% next year B. is relatively stable
C. is 95% smaller than in the past D. has fallen to 95%
35. According to the writer, the most important function of the zoo is to _______.
A. make a lot of money B. entertain visitors
C. ensure animals’ survival D. educate the public

____39____ Information about the artist and when the artwork was created can help you uncover the deeper symbolism present in the work that may not be immediately evident. Last but not least, sharing opinions on art also helps. Try discussing your thoughts on artwork with friends or family who may have different opinions.
1. Which part is object complement (宾语补足语) of the sentence below?
“I found her crying in the garden.”
A. found B. her C. crying D. in the garden
分析句子结构可知,I是主语,found是谓语动词,her的宾语,crying是宾语补足语,in the garden是地点状语。故选C。
2. ——Tom and I went to the gym yesterday.
——_______. Let’s go there together next time.
A. So will I B. So I will C. So did I D. So I did
根据语境以及下文的“Let’s go there together next time.”
3. Only when________the door of the house________that he had left the key in the office.
A. did he arrive at; did he realize B. he arrived at; did he realize
C. did he arrive at; he realized D. he arrived at; he realized
4. ______ the children tracked mud all over them again.
A. No sooner did he sweep the floors clean than B. Hardly had he sweep the floors clean when
C. Barely he had swept the floors clean than D. Scarcely had he swept the floors clean when
sweep the floors“打扫地板”,根据句中tracked可知,句子描述过去的情况,且结合语意,“打扫地板”这一动作发生在tracked之前,为“过去的过去”,应用过去完成时had done结构,A项使用一般过去时,错误;no sooner...than...,hardly...when...,barely...when...,scarcely...when...
5. Opposite the buildings ________ St. Paul’s Church, where you can enjoy some lovely music.
A. stand B. stands C. will stand D. stood
6. It was only when I reread his poems recently _______ I began to appreciate their beauty.
A. so B. as C. when D. that
【答案】D

We walked in so quietly that the nurse at the desk didn’t even lift her eyes from the book. Mum pointed at a big chair by the door and I knew she wanted me to sit down. While I watched mouth open in surprise, Mum took off her hat and coat and gave them to me to hold. She walked quietly to the small room by the lift and took out a wet mop. She pushed the mop past the desk and as the nurse looked up, Mum nodded and said, “Very dirty floors.”
“Yes, I’m glad they’ve finally decided to clean them,” the nurse answered.

During a mountain-climbing trip with my 15-year-old daughter and some college students I noticed her struggling to keep up with the group.
B 29. A 30. C 31. C
根据文章第一段“In the beginning, courage meant “to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.” While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays, I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel.”(在开始,勇气意味着“说出自己的想法,表达自己的心声”。
根据文章第四段“ But with practice and proper pace, you’ll get there too.”” 以及第六段““Yeah, don’t let your lack of experience stop you,” the other added. “It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling or not feeling alright. In fact, it’s important to speak up and ask for help when you need it. That’s how we improve and grow.””(“是的,不要让你的经验不足阻止你,”另一个人补充道。“当你在挣扎或感觉不舒服时,承认是可以的。事实上,当你需要帮助时,大声说出来并寻求帮助是很重要的。这就是我们进步和成长的方式。”)可推知,两位学生建议保持适当的步伐,还建议在必要时寻求帮助。因此“保持合适的速度,与他们所说的是一致的。B项“只要有可能就寻求帮助”有点极端,因为他们说的是“当你需要的时候”,而不是“只要有可能”。故选A。

D. He expresses a desire that more of them be built.
33. The underlined word “vanish” in Paragraph 2 most probably means _______.
A. remain B. disappear C. become rarer D. get killed
34. According to the passage the world’s tiger population _______.
A. will rise by 5% next year B. is relatively stable
C. is 95% smaller than in the past D. has fallen to 95%
35. According to the writer, the most important function of the zoo is to _______.
A. make a lot of money B. entertain visitors
C. ensure animals’ survival D. educate the public
C 33. B 34. C 35. C

根据全文内容,尤其是第二段中的内容“Without zoos many of the creatures we love and admire would no longer exist. (如果没有动物园,许多我们喜爱和欣赏的生物将不复存在)”以及第四段中提到的动物园成功保护濒危物种的例子“Zoos have special breeding programmes to help those animals at risk. These breeding programmes are proving extremely successful. As Irene Shapiro from Zoo and Wildlife Support says, “the Puerto Rican Parrot has grown in numbers from just thirteen to about eighty-five and the Golden Lion Tamarin Monkey, which has almost ceased (停止) to exist twenty years ago, has been reintroduced back into the wild.”(动物园有特殊的繁殖计划来帮助那些处于危险中的动物。事实证明,这些繁殖计划非常成功。正如动物园和野生动物保护组织的艾琳·夏皮罗所说,“波多黎各鹦鹉的数量已经从13只增长到85只左右,而20年前几乎灭绝的金狮狨猴已经被重新引入野外。”)”可以看出,作者认为动物园在环境保护中扮演着重要角色。故选C项。
【33题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线单词的下一句“Scientists predict that as early as 2050 one quarter of the Earth’s species will become extinct.(科学家预测,到2050年,地球上四分之一的物种将灭绝)”可知,科学家预测,到2050年,地球上四分之一的物种可能会灭绝。
根据原文第三段中的内容“Alarmingly, the population of tigers has already fallen by ninety-five percent. (令人震惊的是,老虎的数量已经下降了95%)”可知,老虎的数量比过去减少了95%。故选C项。
【35题详解】
细节理解题。根据原文最后一段中的句子“A zoo does more than display animals to the public. It ensures their survival.(动物园不仅仅是向公众展示动物,它还确保了它们的生存)”可知,动物园最重要的功能是确保动物的生存。故选C项。
