The mystery in northwest China the grand gallery in the desert, the incomparable art, and extensive and profound culture — everything about Dunhuang could take a visitor’s breath away. All these have charmed generations of people, and they have also brought them to form a firm bond with Dunhuang. Fan Jinshi, whose given name means “beautiful poetry” in Chinese, is one of them.
After graduating from Peking University in 1963, Fan had the chance to work in prosperous big cities. However, she determinedly joined the Research Institute on Cultural Relics of Dunhuang (later renamed the Dunhuang Academy), and worked as a guardian of Mogao Grottoes. At the time of her arrival, it was not a comfortable place to live and did not have electricity or running water. All she could see was barren land. She not only had to adapt to the harsh environment, but also had to endure the long-term separation from her family.
But Fan’s devotion to archaeology, protection and management of grottoes never wavered (动摇), and she has made outstanding contributions to the cause of “protecting, studying and carrying forward” Dunhuang Grottoes through her works. Dunhuang is an old person, an extremely vulnerable old person. It has a lot of illnesses. If you are a little careless, it would be gone, Fan says.
Fan has devoted herself to exploring and researching, and she has written valuable archaeological reports. And as a conservationist, she serves to protect the ancient site from erosion, collapsing and overtourism. In her dozens of years of research in Dunhuang heritage conservation, she has led a team dedicated to the preservation of the world’s cultural heritage, actively engaged in international exchange and cooperation in heritage conservation, introduced advanced conservation concepts and technologies, and built “Digital Dunhuang”. She is known as the “daughter of Dunhuang” for her outstanding contributions to the protection of the Mogao Grottoes. The longer she stayed there, the deeper her love has grown for Dunhuang.
Fan has received the nation at honor of “Outstanding Contributor to the Cultural Heritage Preservation” for her substantial contribution to the permanent preservation and sustainable utilization of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang. A minor planet was named after Fan Jinshi at a naming ceremony in Dunhuang to commemorate Fan’s devotion.
24. Why does the author describe Dunhuang’s harsh environment?
A. To highlight the preservation challenges.
B. To contrast with modern living conditions.
C. To illustrate the lack of resources available.
D. To emphasize the remoteness of the location.
25. What motivated Fan Jinshi’s devotion to Dunhuang?
A. Personal fame and recognition. B. Desire for a fashionable lifestyle.
C. Passion for archaeology and culture. D. Family background in Dunhuang studies.
26. What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?
A. Fan Jinshi’s role in international cooperation.
B. The recognition of Fan Jinshi’s achievements.
C. Fan Jinshi’s conservation efforts for Dunhuang.
D. The architectural feature of the Mogao Grottoes.
27. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Failure is the mother of success. B. Devotion leads to great achievement.
C. Youth means limitless possibilities. D. What a man needs most is appreciated.

There’s an ongoing joke in my household. When I win at cards, it means luck. When my husband wins, it means skill. But there are always some questions bursting into my mind: is this also the case that the film industry perceives female film directors? Is it true that when a male director makes a great film, he’s a great director — but when a female director does that, it’s just down to luck or a “team effort”?
There has been much criticism of the Academy Awards in 2023. Danielle Deadwyler and Viola Davis are noticeably absent from Best Actress nominations (提名) and despite Sarah Polley’s Women Talking being nominated for Best Picture, there are no women nominated for Best Director. It’s not just the Oscars. There’s a lack of recognition across the film industry.
According to a 2016 study by Directors UK, the reasons for this bias are complex and exist even when the gatekeepers are women. The same study found women directors were considered less capable. Hiring women in the film industry is often last-minute and relies on “word of mouth”, leading to poor HR practices and nepotism (裙带关系).
Even when a film has been made, the awards selection process involves more prejudice. However, awards really make a difference. They aren’t just about improving chances in the eyes of investors. Women are already behind men in self confidence. The recognition of an award can mean the difference between stopping and continuing.
Luckily, public funding agencies are starting to prioritize films by female filmmakers. However, there’s too much pressure on these agencies to fund films that turn a profit rather than funding new voices. In Scandinavia, funding commissioners (委员) are on short-term contracts to ensure there’s a continual shift in decision-makers. This is something the UK could consider.
28. How does the author introduce the topic of the text?
A. By explaining the fact. B. By raising the doubts.
C. By analyzing the reason. D. By arguing the viewpoint.
29. Why did the Academy Awards in 2023 cause heated discussion?
A. They only focused on commercial value.
B. They ignored the quality of nominated films.
C. There was a lack of a nominee for Best director.
D. Female filmmakers failed to get a fair judgment.
30. What can we know about the women gatekeepers?
A. They are considered to be less capable.
B. They rely on nepotism to win promotion.
C. They also discriminate against female directors.
D. They decide if women in the film industry continue.
31. What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A. Provide practices for reference. B. Make complaints about funding.
C. Describe differences of agencies. D. Accept challenges from filmmakers.
D
The future of space food could be simple and strange. For decades, astronauts have relied mostly on prepackaged food or the occasional grown vegetables during their visits to outer space. With missions beyond Earth’s orbit in sight, a NAS Aled competition is hoping to change all that and start a new era of sustainable space food.
To solve the problem of feeding astronauts on long duration missions, the US space agency started the Deep Space Food Challenge in January 2022, asking companies to propose novel ways to develop sustainable foods for future missions. About 200 companies entered, which were narrowed down to 11 teams in January 2023 as part of phase 2. On November 19, NASA announced the teams that will progress into the final phase of the competition, with some winners to be announced in March. 2025.
All teams had to show systems that could operate for three years and feed a crew of four on a future space mission. The proposals did not need to supply a crew’s entire diet, but they did need to create a variety of nutritious foods to the astronauts.
One company took an incredibly unusual approach to the task. Air Company, base d in New York, designed a system that could use the carbon dioxide breathed out by astronauts in space to produce alcohol, which can then be fed to yeast (酵母) and produce “something that’s suitable for eating”. “It’s making food out of the air.” says Stafford Sheehan, cofound er and chief technology officer of Air Company, “It sounds like magic, but when you see it actually operating, it’s much more simple.”
Interstellar Lab in Florida had a different approach. Its system, called NUCLEUS, is a set of small capsules. Each is self-contained, with its own temperature, watering system. etc. That would allow different vegetables to be planted so that astronauts can easily grow their own food. in space.
While the winning ideas from the Deep Space Food Challenge won’t immediately be used by astronauts, they show what might be possible on future missions. “You’ve got to start years in advance to make sure you have the capability in place when you need it,” says Ralph Fritsche, senior project manager for space crop production at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
32. Why was the Deep Space Food Challenge launched?
A. To find tasty foods for astronauts. B. To found a space food supply center.
C. To develop a new source of space food. D. To attract astronauts to food exploration.
33. Which might be the requirement to become the winning company?
A. Future space missions lasting three years.
B. Entire diets for long-lasting space research.
C. Concrete proposals involving a crew of four.
D. Sustainable supply of nutritious space foods.
34. What do paragraphs 4 and 5 focus on?
A. Process of creating space foods. B. Unique systems of storing foods.
C. Examples of specific space foods. D. Prospects of these food companies.
35. What is the most suitable title for the text?
A. Astronauts produce more space food B. Space explorers face a lack of nutrition
C. Future space missions last even longer D. New types of space foods are on the way

How to criticize constructively
Giving constructive, critical feedback is an art. It’s a way to encourage positive behavior without blaming or attacking the person you’re criticizing. ____36____ You need to remember that everyone is different and you should customize the way you give feedback based on what you know about the person you’re talking to.
Give constructive criticism when you have a good reason to do so. Before you criticize, ask yourself, “What is the point here?” ____37____ If you don’t have a clear objective in mind, you risk overloading the person with additional information, or making them feel like you’ re boxing them in. You may have a specific behavior you want to see changed. For example, your goal may be to get a student to stop shouting out over classmates when they’re excited.
____38____ What you say matters, but how you say it matters a lot, too. If the other person feels like you’re coming from a healthy, friendly place, they’re going to be much more likely to pick up what you’re putting down. So keep your volume down, maintain relaxed body language, and try to make the other person feel respected and appreciated.
Have the conversation in private. Praise in public and criticize in private for the best results. Nobody likes to hear that they aren’t doing a perfect job, so have this conversation privately to put the person you’re criticizing at ease. You could invite the person into your office with a smile on your face, or ask someone to swing by during lunch for a quick chat.____39____
Lead with something admirable. Find something appreciative to say about the other person. ____40____ Leading with a positive note will put the other person in a more receptive place before you get to the heart of the issue.
A. Be conscious of your tone.
B. Point out his fault before praising his hard work.
C. Identify what you’re hoping to get out of the talk.
D. If you criticize a rude staff start by appreciating his passion.
E. It’s essential to master the skills to give constructive criticism.
F. Having a criticism in mind doesn’t mean it needs to be respected.
G. Your criticism is more likely to be productive if nobody else is present.

“Aisha, it’s your turn to read the second paragraph,” Miss Eman said softly. Aisha’s heart raced as she stood up. Her hands shook as she held the book. “One… su… summer, alo… along 1909, the… fa… father…” she stammered (结结巴巴地说), struggling to read as the class burst into laughter, with their giggles (咯咯笑) filling the classroom. “Enough!” Miss Eman called out, silencing everyone in the classroom, and then she gently asked Aisha to see her in the office after school. Embarrassed, Aisha whispered “yes” and dropped into her seat.
After school, Aisha slowly made her way to the staffroom and nervously knocked on the door. Miss Eman invited her in with a warm smile and asked about her reading struggles. Aisha looked down at her hands and explained that she had dyslexia (诵读困难) and that the words jumped around when she tried to read, making it hard for her to focus.
Miss Eman’s face softened with understanding. “Aisha, there’s nothing to be ashamed of. Being different just means you learn in a special way. I’ll bring some special reading material to help you. We’ll work on this together, okay?”
Aisha smiled, feeling hopeful for the first time. The next day Miss Eman handed Aisha a bag full of special books from a reading center designed for students with dyslexia. In the following weeks, Aisha practiced with the materials. Initially difficult, reading soon became less scary, and the words didn’t jump around as much.
A few weeks later, Miss Eman called Aisha to her desk. “Aisha, I’m really proud of your progress. Would you like to join extra reading classes? With a little more help, I know you can do even better.”
Aisha’s eyes brightened. “I’d love to, Miss Eman,” she said.
Miss Eman then called Aisha’s parents to explain the extra reading classes and how they would help Aisha improve her reading. Her parents replied that they fully supported Aisha, as long as she was willing to work hard. Seeing this, Aisha was overjoyed and she was grateful for her parents’ support and Miss Eman’s help.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

The mystery in northwest China, the grand gallery in the desert, the incomparable art, and extensive and profound culture — everything about Dunhuang could take a visitor’s breath away.
D To emphasize the remoteness of the location.
【答案】24. A 25. C 26. C 27. B

根据第二段中“At the time of her arrival, it was not a comfortable place to live and did not have electricity or running water. All she could see was barren land. She not only had to adapt to the harsh environment, but also had to endure the long-term separation from her family. (她刚到的时候,这里的生活并不舒适,没有电,也没有自来水。她所能看到的只有贫瘠的土地。她不仅要适应恶劣的环境,还要忍受与家人长期分离的痛苦)”可知,此处描述了敦煌当时艰苦的生活环境,结合后文提到樊锦诗在这样的环境下坚守并致力于莫高窟的保护工作,可推知作者提到恶劣的环境是为了突出莫高窟保护工作面临的挑战,突显保护工作的不易。故选A项。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“But Fan’s devotion to archaeology, protection and management of grottoes never wavered (动摇), and she has made outstanding contributions to the cause of “protecting, studying and carrying forward” Dunhuang Grottoes through her works. (但她对石窟考古、保护和管理的热爱从未动摇,她通过自己的作品,为“保护、研究、弘扬”敦煌石窟事业做出了杰出的贡献)”和第四段中“Fan has devoted herself to exploring and researching, and she has written valuable archaeological reports. (她一直致力于探索和研究,并撰写了有价值的考古报告)”可知,樊锦诗对考古和文化有着强烈的热情,这促使她投身敦煌的保护工作。故选C项。
【26题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第四段中“Fan has devoted herself to exploring and researching, and she has written valuable archaeological reports. 【27题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,并结合最后一段中“Fan has received the nation at honor of “Outstanding Contributor to the Cultural Heritage Preservation” for her substantial contribution to the permanent preservation and sustainable utilization of the Mogao Grottoes in Dunhuang.(她为敦煌莫高窟的永久保护和可持续利用做出了重大贡献,被授予国家“文化遗产保护杰出贡献奖”)”可知,文章讲述了樊锦诗在毕业后放弃大城市的工作机会,毅然前往敦煌,在艰苦的环境下坚守多年,长期奉献于敦煌保护事业。通过她的努力,她为敦煌莫高窟的保护、研究和传承做出了杰出贡献,获得了国家荣誉,还有小行星以她的名字命名。这充分体现了正是因为奉献,她才取得了如此伟大的成就。故选B项。

【答案】28. B 29. D 30. C 31. A

How to criticize constructively
Giving constructive critical feedback is an art.

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
For the next few months, Aisha attended the extra reading classes. Miss Eman encouraged her every step of the way, and the special books made reading much easier for Aisha. Slowly, Aisha’s confidence grew. When the time came for the reading test, Aisha was nervous, but she knew she had prepared enough. As she started reading the passage, she noticed something amazing: the words didn’t dance or jump anymore. Instead, they stayed still and clear. Aisha smiled to herself as she finished the test.
Paragraph 2:
A week later, Aisha was excited to know that she had scored 40 out of 50 in the reading test. Tears of joy filled Aisha’s eyes as she raced to Miss Eman. Tightly hugging her, Aisha thanked her for her help, saying she couldn’t have done it without her. Miss Eman smiled warmly, her eyes shining with pride, and said it was Aisha’s hard work and determination that had brought her this far. As Aisha looked around the classroom, she noticed her classmates watching her with admiration. Even those who had once laughed at her were impressed by her success.
