In the heart of Yorkshire, Glen Williams’ work connects with the everyday experiences of the working class. His artistic journey began in the 1970s, shaped by the industrial landscape and the lives of those around him. Glen’s story speaks to art lovers, especially those who have walked similar paths, as he brings a deep understanding of community and resilience to his work.
Growing up in a working-class family, he liked to go to school. Art was the very subject that truly excited him and he remembered searching for “any piece of paper or card” to create sculptures, often using the backs of envelopes and cardboard boxes. This resourcefulness remains with him and he continues to include abandoned materials in his art, showing his commitment to sustainability.
His journey as an artist was not always easy. “I didn’t really pick up a paint brush for the next 40 years,” he revealed, as life’s responsibilities, like work and family, took over. Ultimately, he returned to painting while suffering from mental illness. Glen found it very therapeutic (有疗效的) to draw what he was experiencing. He passionately advocated for art therapy, stating, “I think there should be a lot more made of it in society,” stressing the need for creative outlets in mental health.
Growing up in South Yorkshire, Glen lived in a community of miners and steelworkers. “Working-class people feature heavily throughout my work,” he noted, recalling school trips to coal mines and steelworks. This rich background shapes his paintings, which often show the daily lives and struggles of these individuals. He captures their dignity and spirit, inviting viewers to connect with their stories.
His recent exhibition at Huddersfield Art Gallery highlights his focus on people and community. Through his art, Glen invites viewers to reflect on their own memories and experiences, creating a connection that celebrates shared humanity.
24. What influenced Glen Williams’ artistic journey?
A. Art lovers. B. Economic growth.
C. His education. D. His growth background.
25. Why did Glen Williams search for “any piece of paper or card” to create sculptures?
A. Because of his passion for art.
B. Because of his family’s support.
C. Because of its desirable features.
D. Because of environmental worries.
26. Why did Glen Williams return to painting?
A. To advocate art. B. To avoid responsibility.
C. To pursue a dream. D. To seek mental comfort.
27. What do we know about Glen Williams’ art?
A. It helps relate to the working class.
B. It shows the heavy work for workers.
C. It conveys his dissatisfaction with life.
D. It unlocks viewers’ memories of the past.

Every time AI drafts an e-mail or generates an image, the planet pays for it. Making two images can consume as much energy as charging a smartphone; a single exchange with ChatGPT can heat up a server so much that it requires a bottle’s worth of water to cool. At scale, these costs soar.
And a new study in Nature Computational Science identifies another concern: AI’s outsize contribution to the world’s large amounts of electronic waste. AI’s rapid hardware turnover, lasting from 2 to 5 years, exacerbates the issues, with new versions replacing old ones frequently. Asaf Tzachor, who co-authored the new study, says its findings emphasize the need to monitor and reduce AI’s environmental footprint, which includes energy consumption and hardware waste.
Few countries require the proper disposal(处理) of e-waste, and those that do often fail to enforce their existing laws on it. Only 20 US states have e-waste management policies but no federal law. Initiatives like the AI Environmental Impacts Act of 2024 aim to develop standards for AI’s environmental impacts, though it hasn’t been passed. Some companies, however, claim to be taking independent action. Microsoft and Google have promised to reach net zero waste and emissions by 2030.
AI companies have numerous options to limit e-waste. It’s possible to squeeze more life out of hardware, for instance, through regular maintenance and updates. Upgrading and reusing outdated hardware components can also cut waste by 42 percent. Efficient chip and algorithm design further reduce the demand for hardware and electricity. These combined strategies would reduce e-waste by 86 percent.
However, AI products are trickier to recycle because they often contain a lot of sensitive customer data, says Kees Baldé, an e-waste researcher. But big tech companies can afford to both erase that data and properly dispose of their electronics, he points out. “Yes, it costs something,” he says of broader e-waste recycling, “but the gains for society are much larger.”
28. What is the main concern expressed in Paragraph 1?
A. The creation of more smartphones.
B. The negative effects of AI operations.
C. The limitations of current AI capabilities.
D. The need for more efficient cooling for servers.
29. What does the underlined word “exacerbates” in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Worsens. B. Highlights. C. Destroys. D. Expands.
30. What efforts can companies make to limit e-waste?
A. Making laws to manage e-waste effectively.
B. Designing efficient chips for cheap hardware.
C Replacing old hardware components to cut waste.
D. Maintaining and updating hardware for longer use.
31. What would be the best title for the text?
A AI and Sustainability: A Perfect Balance
B. The Digital Age: The Environmental Cost of AI
C. AI and Environment: Charting a Sustainable Path
D. The Green Revolution: Eco-Friendly AI Developments

Imagine the last time you concentrated deeply to solve a challenging problem like a math puzzle or a chess move. Little by little, it seemed that your problem effortlessly resolved itself on the mental blackboard of your mind.
In recent research, my colleagues and I set out to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying these experiences. Specifically, we sought to understand what occurs within the brain when a person engages in abstract and demanding thought.
Previous studies concentrated on brain activity during the brief consideration of problems that take mere seconds to solve. However, our study took a different approach by using more complex math challenges, which are more similar to the tricky puzzles.
We recruited 22 university students to join in math programs. They were asked to solve a series of complex math problems while undergoing functional magnetic resonance imaging (MRI 核磁共振) scans which allowed us to observe changes in brain activity as they handled the problems.
We found the brain regions associated with math processing were highly active during the task, particularly in those with extensive math expertise (专业技能). Furthermore, as the students deeper researched into the problems, their brains showed increased connectivity between different regions, indicating a heightened state of concentration.
The findings could potentially aid scientists in gaining a broader understanding of the power of concentration, which suggest that developing expertise in a particular field can enhance the brain’s ability to concentrate. This may be due to the fact that the brain filters out (滤除) irrelevant information and focuses on the most critical aspects of a problem. Additionally, their extensive experience may have led to the formation of neural pathways that facilitate more efficient problem-solving.
In conclusion, our study provides valuable insights into the neural mechanisms underlying deep concentration and the role of expertise in enhancing this ability. As we continue to explore these phenomena, we may gain a deeper understanding of the cognitive processes that strengthen human performance.
32. What is the main difference of the recent study from previous ones?
A. It focuses on easy problems.
B. It adopts a different strategy.
C. It uses advanced technology.
D. It helps solve math challenges.
33. What is mainly talked about in Paragraph 4?
A. The research tool. B. The research basis.
C. The research subject. D. The research process.
34. What do the research findings suggest?
A. Higher expertise can make the brain more focused.
B. Extensive experience can facilitate problem-solving.
C. Our brain can tell the critical information from others.
D. With the power of concentration comes higher efficiency.
35. What is the purpose of the research?
A. To identify the most effective math learning methods.
B. To promote the use of MRI scans in neuroscience research.
C. To explore the neural mechanisms behind deep concentration.
D. To compare the brain activity of math experts and non-experts.

It was a cold evening. Zahra was going back home after a long day at work. But before returning home, her mother had strictly instructed her to bring certain groceries for the house. She pulled her jacket closer as the cold wind suddenly started to blow. It was around six in the evening and the sky was already a little dark.
She was walking towards the mini-mar t one block away when she heard some giggles. They came from a little girl, who had a wide smile on her face as she gazed at the balloon her mother had just bought her. It was when the mother was busy paying the balloon man and had her back turned on the girl for a few seconds that everything went wrong.
Zahra noticed that a gust of wind made the girl lose her grasp on the balloon which went flying towards the road. The little girl, unaware of the speeding car coming in her direction, ran after the balloon. It all happened as if in slow motion in front of Zahra. Suddenly, she heard the loud honking (喇叭声) of the car and began running towards the girl without hesitation.
She quickly grabbed the girl and they both rolled towards the other side of the road where, luckily, there was grass. Zahra placed one hand on the girl’s head and the other held her tightly by the waist as they went rolling. The crowd immediately gathered around and a young man stepped forward, helping Zahra and the girl stand up from the ground. The young man continued to have them carefully examined, surprised to find both of them uninjured. The driver jumped down out of the car for a quick look. Upon knowing that they were uninjured, he breathed a sigh of relief and apologized over and over again.
After getting a lot of “thank yous” from the mother, Zahra made her way again to the mini-mart near her house.

We found the brain regions associated with math processing were highly active during the task particularly in those with extensive math expertise (专业技能).

【答案】32. B 33. D 34. A 35. C

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Standing on stage, singing a ballad (民谣) at a local Chinese festival, is a core memory for Kien Vuu. ____36____ While he was too young to understand the words, he was always singing Part of the Game, a 1970s song by Hong Kong pop group The Wynners — he did understand how much he loved performing music, especially with his family.
Vuu did not grow up to become a professional singer. ____37____ Later, he was a longevity doctor and also assistant professor of health science at UCLA. Yet he never lost his love for singing, so he made time regularly for karaoke sessions with his own children.
Apparently, for Dr. Vuu, singing with families fosters great affection and shared moments. It also creates an atmosphere where emotions can be expressed freely. ____38____ The moments brought by it are not only a pastime but also a connection to his roots and a bridge to his loved ones.
____39____ Just as Dr. Vuu says, as a doctor and researcher, he has become convinced that having hobbies is an essential part of living and aging well. He easily relates the benefits he gets from singing. In addition to boosting his mood, he says singing helps improve his memory and mental health, lower his stress and even give him a bit of cardio (有氧运动)。
For a small investment, that’s a lot of return. And the best news is that all these great mental and physical health benefits can come from any activity that “lights you up,” as Dr. Vuu puts it. Now, people feel very strongly about the importance of having hobbies, whose benefits are immense. ____40____
A. Hobbies may improve your cognitive health.
B. His work offers several insights into singing.
C. The benefits you reap will depend on your hobby.
D. Instead, he chose medical school and became Kien Vuu, MD.
E. Karaoke is the very thing that lights him up and brings him joy.
F. The positive health outcomes of hobbies are available to everyone.
G. When he was just six years old, he was the youngest of his family band.
【答案】36. G 37. D 38. E 39. B 40. F

【导语】本文是一篇夹叙夹议文。文章主要讲述了Kien Vuu对唱歌的热爱以及爱好对人们身心健康的积极影响。
【36题详解】
上文 “Standing on stage, singing a ballad (民谣) at a local Chinese festival, is a core memory for Kien Vuu.(在当地的一个中国节日上,站在舞台上唱一首民谣,是 Kien Vuu 的核心记忆)”说明Kien Vuu有关于唱歌的深刻记忆。空处和前文为顺接关系,说明他小时候就有唱歌相关经历,同时引出下文。G项“当他只有六岁的时候,他是他家庭乐队里最年轻的成员”符合语境,该项中的“he was the youngest of his family band”和上文中的“ a core memory”相呼应,而“When he was just six years old”和下文中的“While he was too young to understand the words”相呼应。故选G。
【37题详解】
上文“Vuu did not grow up to become a professional singer.(Vuu 长大后没有成为一名职业歌手)”说明他没有成为歌手。空处和前文为转折关系,说明他选择了另一条职业道路。所以D项“相反,他选择了医学院,成为了医学博士Kien Vuu。”符合语境,下文中的“a longevity doctor and also assistant professor of health science at UCLA”证明了Kien Vuu选择了医生这个职业。故选D。
【38题详解】
上文“Apparently, for Dr. Vuu, singing with families fosters great affection and shared moments. It also creates an atmosphere where emotions can be expressed freely.(显然,对 Vuu 博士来说,和家人一起唱歌培养了深厚的感情和共同的时刻。它还营造了一种可以自由表达情感的氛围)” 说明和家人唱歌的好处。空处和前文为顺接关系,举例说明什么样的音乐场合能营造了一种可以自由表达情感的氛围。所以E项“卡拉OK正是让他兴奋并给他带来快乐的事情”符合语境,且下文中的 it指代 “Karaoke”。故选E。
【39题详解】

注意:
1.续写词数应为150词左右;
2.请在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Turning around, Zahra noticed that it was the young man who offered to help.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】When paying for the groceries, Zahra found herself $5 short. Her heart sank as she realized she couldn’t cover the cost of all the groceries. She quickly counted her money again, but the result was the same. Embarrassed and frustrated, Zahra apologized to the cashier and started to put back some of the items she had picked out. But at the thought of her mother’s demand, she stopped. Not knowing what to do next, she stood still there when a low voice said from behind, “I’ll get the check.”
Turning around, Zahra noticed that it was the young man who offered to help. Zahra hesitated for a moment, taken aback by the unexpected generosity. The young man reached for the items Zahra was putting back. “I witnessed your saving that little girl. How brave you are! I just want to pay forward kindness and bravery.” he said. Touched by his words, Zahra accepted his offer with a warm smile. With her groceries in hand, Zahra walked home cheerfully, reflecting how a simple act of kindness should make such a big difference.
