When I arrived in London, I couldn’t speak a word of English. Not even “hello”. I was 18. I’d been working for my dad’s restaurant in Milan and I wanted a new experience. My friend from home lived in London and he used to tell me how incredible it was. I was really bored, so I took my luggage and left.
I was so lost when I arrived at Stansted. To me, English sounded like Chinese. I only arrived with a few hundred pounds. I lived with my friend in East London for a while. I couldn’t find a job for a month. Finally, I found a waiter role in a restaurant. At the time, I had nothing else going on in my life. I used to get up, go to work, and sleep. It was the same thing every day. Then one day on my lunch break, I saw a Gymbox. When I took a look in, there was an amazing Muay Thai (泰拳) class. I used to do boxing when I was 15 but I wasn’t that serious about it. There and then I joined the gym and signed up for the Thai boxing team.
I fell in love with it. I never missed a session (一场) . I started training a lot and the head coach asked me one day, “Do you want to fight?” I knew that’s what I wanted to do. He put me in competitions and I won my first nine amateur games. After watching my progress, he offered to help me fight professionally. However, at one point I had a motorcycle crash and was out for 18 months. This year I’ve fought in Milan and London. I’d say I’m about 12 fights away from becoming a winner.
Sometimes, I can’t believe how far I’ve come from the day I arrived in England. I think everything that’s happened has been because I’m committed. But anyone could do it. If you put in 100%, you’ll get there. I’m just happy because I did a positive thing with my life. It feels good.

6 What influenced the writer’s life most?
A. Joining the boxing team. B. Losing the competition in Milan.

If you find living in modern cities a bit stressful, you should think about our urban wildlife. Trying to adapt to living in built-up areas is having a great effect on birds, foxes ... and even mosquitoes.
Birds have even developed their own “urban music” — a higher-pitched and faster form of their normal song. “They have to cope with loud noise from such things as cars and buses,” Simon Watt, a biologist, told the Cheltenham Science Festival. “In general, we can say that birds in cities have a couple of things in common,” he said. “They tend to use fewer notes and they tend to sing faster. They have their own urban music. This happens across all the species. They sing at different times — at night because they’ve got street lights. They are not quite sure when it’s bedtime. These creatures are getting used to their new environment.”
Pigeons (鸽子) are unable to distinguish between the seasons. Like it or not, they are here to stay. We have built an environment which is perfect for them and they never feel cold in cities. “A high-rise building is pretty much a cliff,” said Mr. Watt. “Furthermore, there is food all over the place and it is warmer.”
Mr. Watt said there is even a kind of mosquito which exists only in the tube, beginning to feed on humans. The mosquito switched from feeding on birds to feeding on humans, rats and mice. He described how urban foxes, while they can get enough food, often live only 15 months — instead of the natural lifespan of up to seven years — because they get hit by cars. Blackcaps used to migrate to Morocco or southern Spain, but the birds have started to come to British cities because of the warmth and people feeding them in their gardens. Mr. Watt said they have developed longer beaks (喙) to help them get nuts from wire cages.
8. What makes birds sing at night?
A. The traffic noise. B. The street lights.
C. The urban music. D. The cool weather.
9. Why do pigeons have difficulty in recognizing different seasons?
A. They become stressed in cities. B. They live in high-rise buildings.
C. They feel warm in cities. D. They can’t tell day from night.
10. What happens to urban foxes?
A. They suffer from cold and hunger.
B. They have started to feed on humans.
C. They have got used to living in busy cities.
D. They lose their lives earlier due to car accidents.
11. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Birds Adjust to City Traffic Noise.
B. Urban Wildlife Has Enough Food.
C. Modern Cities Change Animals’ Lives.
D. High-rises Offer Safer Shelters for Creatures.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. D 11. C

Education officials and industry experts are debating the future of online learning. The discussion is important because hundreds of universities in the United States have recently moved classes online because of the spread of the novel corona-virus (冠状病毒) .
Asha Choksi, the head of research for Pearson Education, said the rise of Internet-based or online study programs has led to major improvements in higher education and it’s actually given a lot more power to students in terms of how, when and where they learn.
Classes meet online through video conferencing. In this way, students can communicate with each other and their professors even when they are far away from school. However, recent research suggests the majority of college students and professors prefer in-person instruction, because they are concerned that companies supervising (监管) online learning programs are not clear about their policies with the schools they serve.
“In-person learning is especially important in fields like healthcare and teaching. Online education can never really take its place,” said Stephanie Hall, a fellow with the independent policy research group The Century Foundation. “Students need to experience what they’re learning about, reading about or hearing about in the classroom. And I don’t know yet the degree to which technology can facilitate that.”
“When schools make agreements with online program managers to run their online programs, they often do not make important information available to students,” Hall said. This includes how much control the company has over the design of the program or whether teachers leading the classes were involved in their design. In addition, many colleges and universities advertise online programs as a low-cost opportunity for students. But in some cases, students attending in-person classes get financial aid and online students do not.
12. What does Choksi think of online study programs?
A. They offer students more choices for their studies.
B. They reform the country’s education system.
C. They provide advanced scientific knowledge.
D. They promote the development of technology.
13. According to most college students and professors, what’s the advantage of in-person learning?
A. It is convenient.
B. It costs less to study.
C. It can better meet school policies.
D. It can improve students’ communication skills.
14. What does the underlined word “facilitate” probably mean in paragraph 4?
A. Change. B. Apply. C. Achieve. D. Control.
15. What is Hall’s attitude towards online education?
A. Hopeful. B. Critical. C. Uncaring. D. Neutral.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. C 15. B

故选A。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“However, recent research suggests the majority of college students and professors prefer in-person instruction, because they are concerned that companies supervising (监管) online learning programs are not clear about their policies with the schools they serve. (然而,最近的研究表明,大多数大学生和教授更喜欢面对面的授课,因为他们担心监管在线学习项目的公司对他们所服务的学校的政策不清楚。)”可知,他们认为这种方式能更好地符合学校的政策。故选C。
【14题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第四段中“Students need to experience what they’re learning about, reading about or hearing about in the classroom. And I don’t know yet the degree to which technology can facilitate that. (学生需要在课堂上体验他们正在学习、阅读或听到的内容。我还不知道技术能在多大程度上促进这一点。)”可知,学生需要亲自体验所学内容,而技术是否能帮助学生做到这一点,作者还不确定。结合选项,facilitate意为“促进,使便利”,与achieve (实现)意思相近。故选C。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“Online education can never really take its place (在线教育永远无法取代它)”和第五段中“When schools make agreements with online program managers to run their online programs, they often do not make important information available to students (当学校与在线课程管理人员达成协议来运营他们的在线课程时,他们通常不会向学生提供重要信息)”可知,他对在线教育的态度是批判的(Critical)。故选B。

Teenagers are not always the easiest people in the world to understand or talk to. They can be complex and moody, with their minds fumbling (摸索) between childhood and adulthood, not to mention strong hormones (荷尔蒙)! ____16____
No matter what their interests are — sports, music, fashion, TV, video games, friends, school work — be open to talking about them. Work on being a good listener and try to show interest in what your teenagers enjoy discussing. ____17____ This ensures that you are giving them enough time and attention to talk about their interests.
Be aware of your own reactions to your teenagers. ____18____ Rather than react emotionally to their actions or words, consider why they are “pushing your buttons”. For example, the answer could be that they feel angry for being late for an important event or simply that they are being moody teenagers. By reflecting on your responses to your teenagers, you can find the root of the problem or issue. This will likely also lead to less fighting and more talking.
____19____ This could be difficult to do, as you may feel you need to serve as a good role model for your teenagers. But acknowledging when you have made a mistake will allow them to see that you are human, and someone they can relate to.____20____ “I’m sorry” are powerful words for a teenager to hear from a parent or an authority figure.
A. Admit when you are wrong, and apologize.
B. Build trust between you and your teenagers.
C. But this doesn’t mean it’s impossible to talk with teenagers.
D. A good rule of thumb is to listen twice as much as you speak.

C“But this doesn’t mean it’s impossible to talk with teenagers. (但这并不意味着与青少年交流是不可能的)”起到了转折的作用,引出下文关于如何与青少年交流的内容。故选C。
【17题详解】
根据空前“No matter what their interests are — sports, music, fashion, TV, video games, friends, school work — be open to talking about them. Work on being a good listener and try to show interest in what your teenagers enjoy discussing. 【19题详解】
根据空后“This could be difficult to do, as you may feel you need to serve as a good role model for your teenagers. But acknowledging when you have made a mistake will allow them to see that you are human, and someone they can relate to. (这可能很难做到,因为你可能觉得你需要为你的青少年树立一个好榜样。但是承认你犯了错误会让他们看到你是一个人,一个他们可以理解的人。)”可知,这里强调要承认自己的错误,让青少年看到自己人性化的一面。A选项“Admit when you are wrong, and apologize. (承认错误并道歉。)”符合段落主旨。故选A。
【20题详解】
根据空前“But acknowledging when you have made a mistake will allow them to see that you are human, and someone they can relate to. Chase counted his New Year gifts one more time as he put a robot-shaped eraser into each envelope. “Twenty-one, twenty-two.”
“Do you have one for everyone in your class?” Mom asked.
“Yep,” Chase said. “I’m ready for the party tomorrow!”
When Chase got to school the next day, he saw a new girl in his classroom. She stood near Ms. Robins and looked around shyly.
“This is Eva,” said Ms. Robins. “Will someone volunteer to show her around today?” Chase raised his hand since he liked showing the new kids around and helping them feel welcome.
“Thanks Chase,” Ms. Robins said. “Now let’s get down to our work.
That’s when Chase realized he didn’t have a New Year gift for Eva. No one else would have one either. Chase pictured his classmates’ desks covered with gifts while Eva’s desk was empty. He felt sad about that.
At break, he was careful not to mention the party as he showed Eva around the playground. At lunchtime, he walked Eva to the lunchroom, still worried about what would happen at the party. This won’t be a New Year’s Day for Eva with no gifts, he thought. Eva had brought a packed lunch, so Chase showed her where she was supposed to sit and introduced her to some of the kids at her table.
While eating, Chase suddenly remembered that kids often included candy hearts with the New Year gifts they exchanged. An idea flooded into his head. He whispered it to the kids around him. Soon everyone at the table was nodding and whispering.
When they were back in the classroom after lunch, Chase told Ms. Robins about their plan. Ms. Robins smiled. “That’s very thoughtful,” she said. “Let’s go for it.”
It was math time, so Chase invited Eva to study with him. He made sure Eva sat with her back to the room so she wouldn’t notice.

【答案】例文:
Meanwhile her new classmates were busy working on something. They gathered all the extra candy hearts and small beautiful things they could find, pooling them together to create a special gift for Eva. Each student also took a moment to write a kind note to her, welcoming her to their class. By the time the project was finished, they had an envelope bursting with small, heartfelt gifts and notes. Ms. Robins watched with a smile, touched by her students’ kindness. A buzz of excitement filled the room as the envelope was handed silently to Chase.
“Here’s your New Year gift, Eva. It’s from everyone,” Chase said. Eva’s eyes widened with surprise and delight as she took the bulging envelope from him. She carefully opened it and began to pull out the notes and candies, her face lighting up with each discovery. The warmth of the gesture made her feel welcome and less anxious about her new surroundings. The other students watched with smiles, happy to see Eva so pleased. All of them couldn’t wait to see her become part of the class in the days to come, feeling proud of coming together to make Eva’s first day special.

4. What had the writer done before he came to London?

B. He had been a professional coach.

5. How was the writer’s life at first in London?

6. What influenced the writer’s life most?
A. Joining the boxing team. B. Losing the competition in Milan.
C. Suffering from a motorcycle crash. D. Being the head coach of the team.
7. What does the writer intend to convey in the last paragraph?
A. Life is not all roses.
B. Difficulties make him stronger.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. Devotion makes him successful.

Like it or not they are here to stay.

Be aware of your own reactions to your teenagers. ____18____ Rather than react emotionally to their actions or words, consider why they are “pushing your buttons”. For example, the answer could be that they feel angry for being late for an important event or simply that they are being moody teenagers.
“Thanks, Chase,” Ms.
