On Christmas Eve when Paul came out of his office, a street urchin(顽童) was walking around the shining car. “Is this your car, sir?” he asked. Paul answered, “Yes, my brother gave it to me for Christmas.” The boy was surprised. “You mean your brother gave it to you and it did cost you nothing? Sir, I wish…” He hesitated(犹豫). Paul thought of course he knew what the boy wanted, but what the boy said surprised him greatly. “I wish,” the boy went on, “that I could be a brother like that.” Paul looked at the boy in surprise, and then he said again, “Would you like to take a ride in my car?” “Oh yes, I’d love to,” the boy answered. After a short ride, the boy turned and with his eyes shining, said, “Sir, would you mind driving in front of my house?” Paul smiled a little. He thought he knew what the boy wanted. He wanted to show his neighbors that he could ride home in a big car. But Paul was wrong again. “Will you stop where those two steps are?” the boy asked. He ran up to the steps. Then in a short while Paul heard him coming back, but he was not coming fast. He was carrying his little crippled(残疾的) brother. He sat down on the step and pointed to the car. “There he is, Buddy, just like I told you upstairs. His brother gave it to him for Christmas and it didn’t cost him a cent. And some day I’m going to give you one just like it. then you can see for yourself all the nice things in the Christmas windows that I’ve been trying to tell you about.” Paul got out and lifted the boy to the front seat of his car. The effect(影响) of a conversation between a child and an adult is about six times as great as the effect of adult speech input alone, the researchers found. “Adults speaking to children helps language develop, but what matters much more is the interaction(交流)”said the study’s lead author, Frederick Zimmerman, an associate professor in the School of Public Health at the University of California, Los Angeles. The researchers also found that TV viewing didn’t have much of an effect-positively or negatively-as long as it wasn’t displacing conversations between an adult and a child. The UCLA study included 275 families with children between 2 months and 48 months old. They represented a variety of incomes(收入) and education. The researchers found that, in an average day, children hear about 13,000 spoken words from adults and took part in about 400 adultchild conversations a day. Factors(因素)positively associated with language development included each additional(额外的)100 conversations a day and each 1,000 word increase in the number of words spoken by adults and heard by children. When looked at alone, TV was negatively associated with language development. But, when the three factors were put together, the only one that stood out was conversation between adults and children. “The more a child speaks and interacts with an adult, the better idea a parent has about where the child is”Zimmerman said.“Although it’s mostly done unconsciously(无意识地),parents will provide more information and correct mistakes. They’ll also tailor their speech to the child. Parents can give a child words by talking to them about what they’re doing, such as I’m putting on your pajamas now. But give your child the opportunity to talk, hopefully without the rest of the noise in the environment.” she added". If parents can spare some conversation time-maybe at bath time or at dinner time-that’s a wonderful thing.” ( )41. The researchers also found that TV viewing ______. A. could have a positive effect on a child’s language development B. had a little effect on a child’s language development C. affected a child’s language development more negatively than positively D. affected a child’s language development both negatively and positively ( )42. Frederick Zimmerman would probably agree that ______. A. parents should let their children talk most of the time. B. children should watch TV programs alone all the time. C. the conversation between parents and children should be twoway D. It’s no good for parents to correct their children’s mistakes when they are speaking ( )43. We can get from the last paragraph that ______. A. parents should let a child repeat what he or she says B. bath time or dinner time is the best chance for parents to talk to a child C. parentchild conversation can be carried out at any proper time D. parents should leave a child talking alone ( )44. For example, someone who likes to spend too much time sitting or lying down while watching television is sometimes called a couch potato. A couch is a piece of furniture that people sit on. Robert Armstrong, an artist from California, developed the term(词语;术语) in 1976. Years later, he listed it as a trademark(商标)with the American government. He also helped write a funny book about life as a full-time television watcher. It is called “The Official Couch Potato Handbook.” Couch potatoes enjoy watching television just as mouse potatoes enjoy working on computers. A computer mouse is the thing that we use to move the pointer on a computer screen. The term became popular in 1993. American writer Alice Kahn invented the term to describe young people who spend a lot of time using computers. Too much time inside the house can cause someone to get cabin fever which isn’t really a disease. However, people can become bored if they spend too much time inside their homes. This especially happens during the winter when it is too cold or snowy to do things outside and even offices and stores are closed. Often children get cabin fever if they cannot go outside to play. So do their parents. Some people enjoy spending a lot of time in their homes to make them nice places to live in. This is called nesting or cocooning. Birds build nests to hold their eggs and baby birds. Some insects(昆虫) build cocoons around themselves for protection. Nests and cocoons provide safety for wildlife. So people like the idea of nests and cocoons, too. The terms became popular over 20 years ago. They describe people buying their first homes and filling them with many things. These people then have children. When these children are grown and have left the nest, these parents will live alone in their empty nest and become empty nesters. ( )46. Teenagers especially need their own personal space at home w 73 they can feel relaxed and private. But, of course, not all teenagers are lucky e 74 to have a room of their own. Where space is short, they often have to s 75 a bedroom with a brother or sister. In that case, it’s a good idea for them to have a special area o 76 corner of the room to call their own. It’s especially important for young people to have somewhere to k 77 their personal things. This may or may not be a tidy place and it is not a good idea for p 78 to try and tell teenagers how to organize their space as this is likely to lead to arguments.
