A child science genius has wowed his professors and classmates by becoming a college graduate at the age of 13. Elliott Tanner recently graduated from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s (学士) degree in physics, with a minor in mathematics.
Elliott’s parents are very proud of the hard work and devotion he showed to get his degree at such a young age and are pleased that he has become an inspiration to lots of people. Elliott’s mom said, “He also inspires us to be better people every day.”
Elliott’s parents first realized their son was gifted at the age of 3, when he displayed amazing language and math skills. It became clear that a traditional education experience would not be a good fit for him. Elliott was then homeschooled by his parents. “Elliott ended up learning and using information quicker than we could provide it,” his mother added.
By age 9, Elliott had already completed most of the normal high school courses, and his parents were struggling to keep up with him. So they sent him to the local community college, where Elliott really developed his passion for physics. “For a long time, I wanted to be a mathematician,” Elliott said. “Then I was introduced to a physics class, and that really inspired me to learn more about the secrets of the world.”
When he was 11 years old, Elliott moved to the University of Minnesota to start studying physics and math. Although his college experience is a little different from that of his classmates, Elliott still hangs out with his peers in the student lounge, discussing homework, debating physics topics or watching movies. Being with people that are just as passionate about physics as he is has been pleasing enough for him.
One of the biggest challenges Elliott and his family have faced is criticism online from people who make judgments about what his life must be like. Many people believe he can’t have many social skills. However, Elliott has always enjoyed interacting with kids his own age. He loves playing with other neighborhood children, and just like the other kids, Elliott goes trick-or-treating on Halloween, but in an academic way: He dresses up as Albert Einstein, his favorite scientist.
Elliott has been accepted into the University of Minnesota’s PhD program and will start his study next year. In the future, Elliott aims to be a professor at the University of Minnesota and become an expert in physics. “I can’t wait to get started,” he said.
24.What did Elliott’s parents do when they realized he was gifted?
A.They sent him to a normal high school.
B.They asked for advice from universities.
C.They taught him by themselves at home.
D.They helped him fit into traditional education.
25.When Elliott moved to the University of Minnesota, he ______.
A.discovered his passion for physics
B.enjoyed staying with his classmates
C.dressed up as Albert Einstein in class
D.refused to play with kids his own age
26.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Elliott has few social skills.
B.Elliott loves exploring the world.
C.Elliott has no talent for language.
D.Elliott hopes to be a mathematician.
27.From Elliott’s story, we know that ______.
A.physics is the most important subject
B.children should be educated at home
C.geniuses need support just as we do
D.the earlier kids start school, the better

The Land Under the Sea
Ten thousand years ago, as the last ice age ended, sea levels around the world were far lower than they are today. Much of the land under both the North Sea to the east of Britain and the English Channel which now separates France and Britain was part of a huge region of forests and grassy plains. Then the climate gradually became warmer and the water trapped in large masses of ice was released.
Now the development of advanced sonar (声纳) technology, known as bathymetry, is making it possible to study this flooded landscape in extraordinary detail. A special echo (回声) sounder is fixed to the bottom of a survey ship and it makes wide sweeps across the seabed. While previous technology has only been able to produce two-dimensional images, bathymetry can now use computers, satellite-positioning equipment and special software to create accurate and remarkably detailed maps. For the first time, an ancient riverbed jumps out of the three-dimensional image. The site of pre-historic settlements can now be pinpointed.
According to expert Linda Andrews, this technological development is of huge significance. “We now have the ability to map the seabed as accurately as we can map dry land,” she says.
Once bathymetric techniques have identified sites where people might have built their homes and villages, divers can be sent down to investigate further. Robot submarines (潜艇) can also be used, and researchers hope they will find stone tools and wood from houses as proof of human activity. The idea shared by many people in Britain of their country as a natural island kingdom will be challenged by the findings: Britain has been inhabited for about 500,000 years and much of this time it has been linked on and off to continental Europe. It remains to be seen how far this new awareness is taken on board, however.
In fact, the use of bathymetry will not be limited to the study of lost landscapes and ancient settlements. It will also be vital in finding ships that have been destroyed in accidents. In addition, commercial applications are a real possibility. Aggregates (骨材) for the construction industry are becoming increasingly expensive, and bathymetry can be used to identify suitable sites for digging for this material. Mapping the seabed will also identify places where rare plants and shellfish are living. Digging at such sites should be prevented, either to work for a profit or to make deeper waterways for massive container ships.
28.How does bathymetry work?
A.It has an echo sounder placed on the seabed.
B.It makes use of a number of different devices.
C.It produces two-dimensional images of the sea floor.
D.It bases its calculations on the location of construction sites.
29.The author believes a better understanding of the settlements on the seabed may ______.
A.attract investment in the research under the sea
B.inspire people to take an interest in modern technology
C.adapt the attitudes of the British to their country’s history
D.receive confirmation of rebuilding ancient man-made objects
30.We can learn that the use of bathymetry will help to ______.
A.identify new species of plants and animals B.provide the precise location of sunken ships
C.evaluate the cost of seeking certain resources D.promote the development of deeper waterways
D
Chemists have spent the past century trying to make plastics that will break down in seawater. As it is, most plastics appear to take centuries to fully degrade in the ocean. But that may change. Scientists have just designed a new plastic that can break down in seawater within weeks, not decades or more.
Back in the 1930s, scientists created a now-popular plastic out of corn and potato starch (淀粉). It’s known as polylactide, or PLA.It’s a polymer (聚合物), which is a molecule made by linking many building blocks — called monomers — into a long string. Scientists had hoped PLA would quickly break down in the environment. And in some places, like compost pits (堆肥坑), it does. But not in seawater. Even after three years in ocean water, PLA remains largely unchanged.
Timo Rheinberger is a PhD student at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. His work on polymers has focused on boosting PLA’s breakdown. As part of that work, he became part of a team that just added some RNA-inspired breaking points to PLA.They put those breaking points in places where monomers in the PLA molecules are linked.
They weakened the links that joined up to 15 percent of a PLA’s monomers. Then, they soaked their samples in artificial seawater and measured how fast these tweaked versions of PLA broke down. The expected final product of PLA’s breakdown was a small molecule called lactic acid. So, they tested for that too.
As the team had hoped, seawater attacked the weakened links between monomers, splitting the polymer chain apart. The more breaking points the researchers added to the polymer, the faster the PLA broke down.
When they weakened 15 percent of PLA’s monomer links, the polymer broke down entirely within just two weeks. When they weakened only 3 percent of the links, the breakdown took about 2 years. This suggests the team can design how quickly PLA will break down in water by adjusting how many weakened links it has.
Mehlika Karamanlioglu teaches biomedical engineering at Istanbul Gelisim University. She, too, has studied environmental breakdown of PLA.“It’s a new approach,” she says of the Dutch technique. Theirs is also “a preliminary study,” Karamanlioglu says. So, more testing must follow. Scientists want to know how the strength of the new PLA compares to old PLA.
Rheinberger agrees. “You need a lot of material to start those studies,” he adds. And so far, his team has made only small amounts of the modified PLA.
Karamanlioglu notes the Dutch team also tested the breakdown of its PLA in artificial seawater. “I wonder if they checked (the water) for pollution,” she adds. If there were microbes (微生物), those microbes may have produced molecules called enzymes that sped up the PLA’s degradation.
31.What can we learn about PLA from the passage?
A.Lactic acid prevents the breakdown of PLA.
B.PLA breaks down faster in artificial seawater.
C.PLA’s breakdown relies on that of monomers.
D.Compost pits are the best places for PLA’s breakdown.
32.What does the underlined word “preliminary” in Paragraph 7 probably mean?
A.Systematic. B.Comparative. C.In-depth. D.Early-stage.
33.What is Mehlika’s attitude towards the findings of the Dutch team?
A.Supportive. B.Doubtful. C.Optimistic. D.Cautious.
34.What can be learned from the last three paragraphs?
A.Mehlika is confident about the application of the new PLA.
B.The cleanness of water also affects the breakdown of PLA.
C.The new PLA has better strength than the old PLA.
D.The new PLA have been produced in large amounts.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有项为多余选项。
Our Fears Can Change the Reality of the Situation
At times, our worries and anxieties can defeat us. In addition, our worries can change our understanding of what is reality and what is not. Here is a brief list of techniques that you can use to help gain a better viewpoint on things during your anxious moments.
35 A person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get their mind off the problem. A person could get some fresh air, listen to some music, or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things.
Remember that our fearful thoughts are made to seem worse and can make the problem worse. 36 When unexpectedly having thoughts that make you fearful or anxious, challenge those thoughts by asking yourself questions that will maintain objectivity and common sense.
Be smart in how you deal with your fears and anxieties. Do not try to deal with everything all at once. When facing a current or upcoming task that makes your anxious, break the task into a series of smaller steps. 37
Remember that all the worrying in the world will not change anything. Most of what we worry about never comes true. 38
It is not easy to deal with all of our fears and worries. When your fears and anxieties have the best of you, try to calm down and then get the facts of the situation. The key is to take it slow. All you can do is do your best each day, hope for the best, and when something does happen, take it easy. 39
A.Take it one step at a time and things will work out.
B.When feeling anxious, stop what you are doing and try to do something relaxing.
C.This will give you the confidence to manage your anxiety.
D.Instead of worrying about something that probably won’t happen, concentrate on what you are able to do.
E.The next time you feel depressed, review your list and think about the good things that you have in your life.
F.A good way to manage your worry is to challenge your negative thinking with positive statements and realistic thinking.
G.Completing these smaller tasks one at a time will make the stress more manageable and increases your chances of success.
第三部分 书面表达(共两节,共32分)
第一节 阅读表达(共4小题,第40、41题各2分,第42题3分,第43题5分,共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求回答问题。
Most research supports the idea that music’s main benefit for students is the uplift of mood and thus of abilities to concentrate on tasks and study for longer periods of time.
What kind of music are we talking about then? Some Drake? Bach? SpongeBob? What’s the magic song? Again, complicated (复杂). You want something that’s going to drop you right into that sweet spot of what is called medium arousal; a playlist that’s too boring might make you sleepy, while a song that’s too exciting might make it harder for you to focus. Songs with 60-70 beats per minute have been suggested to be good for keeping information. Beethoven’s For Elise is an example. Listening to Mozart has also been shown in studies to improve the productivity of its listeners.
There’s quite a bit of controversy on the effectiveness of having music on while you study, even music that puts you in the right mood. A study conducted by the University of Wales found that students consistently performed worse on tests when exposed both to music that they liked and music they didn’t like, meaning that listening to music, regardless of how it made the students feel, was found to be just as distracting as a person talking to you while you’re working.
That same study also found that along with a completely quiet environment, students also performed best when they were played repetitive sounds or sounds of nature.
Another similar study, however, found that while average performance was lower for the music-listening group, the variation in individual scores suggests that the effects of the music vary a lot from person to person, and hence why it’s difficult to definitely say whether music helps or hurts.
There seems to be agreement on one thing at least, which is that music with lyrics (歌词) definitely is a no-go. Processing lyrics means there’s no room in the language processing part of your brain to work on other tasks, especially when this involves reading or writing. The brain, actually, doesn’t have the ability to multitask at all. What you think is multitasking is actually just your poor old noodle rapidly switching between everything, but concentrating on nothing. Sad!
40.What kind of songs can be good for keeping information?
41.Why is listening to music with lyrics not helpful for study?
42.Please decide which part is false in the following statement, then underline it and explain why.
▶The study conducted by the University of Wales found that students performed best when they were exposed to music.
43.Apart from the aspects mentioned in the passage, how can listening to music influence you? (In about 40 words)

“I wonder if they checked [the water] for pollution,” she adds.

Knowing this choice was 6 her, I reached into my pocket and pulled out a D-buck, our class currency(货币). I needed to 7 her cooperation.
“Here, I’ll 8 you for your time.”
She offered an insincere smile, grasped the green paper, and headed off.
I watched closely as the girls talked. When they finally walked back together, I sighed with 9 .
A minute later, Brianna came back and handed me the D-buck.
“I shouldn’t keep this.” Her eyes fell to her feet, 10 radiating from her quiet voice. “I don’t want Molly to think I only went to get her so I could earn a D-buck. She’s my friend.”

【答案】31.C 32.D 33.D 34.B
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍科学家们设计了一种新型塑料,可以在海洋中迅速分解。
31.细节理解题。根据第五段“As the team had hoped, seawater attacked the weakened links between monomers, splitting the polymer chain apart. The more breaking points the researchers added to the polymer, the faster the PLA broke down. (正如研究小组所希望的那样,海水攻击了单体之间薄弱的连接,使聚合物链断裂。研究人员在聚合物中添加的断点越多,PLA分解的速度就越快)”和第六段“When they weakened 15 percent of PLA’s monomer links, the polymer broke down entirely within just two weeks. When they weakened only 3 percent of the links, the breakdown took about 2 years.(当他们削弱PLA 15%的单体连接时,聚合物在两周内完全分解。当他们只削弱了3%的联系时,这种破坏持续了大约2年)”可知,PLA的分解依赖于单体的分解。故选C。
32.词句猜测题。根据划线词后句“So, more testing must follow. (因此,必须进行更多的测试)” 可知,他们的研究只是“初步研究”。由此推知,划线词preliminary与early-stage(早期阶段,早期的)意思接近。故选D。
33.推理判断题。根据第七段“She, too, has studied environmental breakdown of PLA. “It’s a new approach,” she says of the Dutch technique. Theirs is also “a preliminary study,” Karamanlioglu says. So, more testing must follow. (她也研究过PLA的环境破坏。“这是一种新方法,”她谈到荷兰的技术时说。Karamanlioglu说,他们的研究也是“初步研究”。因此,必须进行更多的测试)” 可推断,Mehlika对荷兰研究小组的发现持谨慎态度。故选D。
34.细节理解题。根据最后三段,尤其是最后一段“Karamanlioglu notes the Dutch team also tested the breakdown of its PLA in artificial seawater. “I wonder if they checked (the water) for pollution,” she adds. If there were microbes (微生物), those microbes may have produced molecules called enzymes that sped up the PLA’s degradation. (Karamanlioglu指出,荷兰研究小组还测试了PLA在人工海水中的分解。她补充说:“我想知道他们是否检查了(水)污染。”如果有微生物,这些微生物可能产生了一种叫做酶的分子,加速PLA的降解)” 可知,水的清洁度也会影响PLA的分解。故选B。

【答案】35.B 36.F 37.G 38.D 39.A

(请记住,世界上所有的担忧都不会改变任何事情。我们所担心的大部分事情都不会成真。)”可知,担忧不会改变任何事情,很多担心的事情不会成真。D选项“Instead of worrying about something that probably won’t happen, concentrate on what you are able to do.(与其担心一些可能不会发生的事情,不如专注于你能做些什么。)”与主题一致,我们不应为没有发生的事情担忧,而应该专心于自己能做的事情。故选D项。
39.根据空前的“The key is to take it slow. All you can do is do your best each day, hope for the best, and when something does happen, take it easy.(关键是要慢慢来。你所能做的就是每天尽你最大的努力,期待最好的希望,当一些事情发生时,放松点。)”可知,最后一段对上文内容进行总结,A选项“Take it one step at a time and things will work out.(每次一小步,事情就会成功的。)”内容与上文中的“take it slow”,“take it easy”均是表述出现焦虑的时候,让我们慢下来,别着急,冷静面对,与空前内容吻合且是对上文的总结。故选A项。
【答案】40.Songs with 60-70 beats per minute. 41.Because processing lyrics means there’s no room in the language processing part of our brain to work on other tasks, especially when this involves reading or writing. 42.此题接受两种答案:
▶The study conducted by the University of Wales found that students performed best (students performed worse) when they were exposed to music.
The study conducted by the University of Wales found that students performed best when they were exposed to music (when they were played repetitive sounds or sounds of nature). 43.Music helps me to build social connections. Music sometimes speaks better than words, and I find it easy to befriend someone who shares a similar interest in music. In a way, music brings people together and create a sense of community and shared experience.
根据第二段中“Songs with 60-70 beats per minute have been suggested to be good for keeping information.(每分钟60-70拍的歌曲被认为有助于记忆信息)”可知,每分钟60-70拍的歌曲有助于记忆信息。故答案为Songs with 60-70 beats per minute.
41.考查细节理解。根据最后一段中“There seems to be agreement on one thing at least, which is that music with lyrics (歌词) definitely is a no-go. Processing lyrics means there’s no room in the language processing part of your brain to work on other tasks, especially when this involves reading or writing.(至少有一件事似乎是一致的,那就是带歌词的音乐绝对是不允许的。处理歌词意味着你大脑的语言处理部分没有空间来处理其他任务,尤其是当这涉及到阅读或写作时)”可知,听有歌词的音乐时,大脑的语言处理部分就没有空间来处理其他任务,这种音乐对学习没有帮助。故答案为Because processing lyrics means there’s no room in the language processing part of our brain to work on other tasks, especially when this involves reading or writing.
42.考查细节理解。根据第三段中“A study conducted by the University of Wales found that students consistently performed worse on tests when exposed both to music that they liked and music they didn’t like, meaning that listening to music, regardless of how it made the students feel, was found to be just as distracting as a person talking to you while you’re working.(威尔士大学进行的一项研究发现,当学生听自己喜欢和不喜欢的音乐时,他们在考试中的表现总是更差,这意味着听音乐,不管它让学生感觉如何,被发现就像在你工作时有人和你说话一样分散注意力)”可知,威尔士大学的研究发现学生听音乐时,他们在考试中的表现总是很差;同时根据第四段“That same study also found that along with a completely quiet environment, students also performed best when they were played repetitive sounds or sounds of nature.(同一项研究还发现,在一个完全安静的环境中,当学生听到重复的声音或自然的声音时,他们的表现也最好)”可知,研究发现听到重复的声音或自然的声音时,学生们的表现很好。所以给定句子可以有两种修改方式:1.把students performed best改为students performed worse;2.把when they were exposed to music改为when they were played repetitive sounds or sounds of nature。故答案为The study conducted by the University of Wales found that students performed best (students performed worse) when they were exposed to music.
The study conducted by the University of Wales found that students performed best when they were exposed to music (when they were played repetitive sounds or sounds of nature).
Music helps me to build social connections. Music sometimes speaks better than words, and I find it easy to befriend someone who shares a similar interest in music. In a way, music brings people together and create a sense of community and shared experience.

I’m sorry to hear that you are addicted to video games. I can understand how upset and stressed you must be. It is known to all that playing video games properly can relax the brain, but being addicted to video games can seriously affect our life and study. Here are a few things you can do.
First, if I were you, I would try my best to limit the time spent on video games each day. Another step would be finding purposes in reality, from enjoying face-to-face conversations with your family and friends to taking a walk in the sunshine.
I am sure that with persistence, you’ll definitely get rid of your video game addiction.
Yours
Li Hua
