Last weekend,my husband and I drove a dog to her new home.Typically, when we have a
new dog in the backseat,it's a young dog.But this passenger was a much different
story.Magdalen is a 13-year-old dog.Her owner gave her up temporarily when he was sick, but
when he fully recovered several months later,he said he didn't want her back.He had her since
she was young but now had no place for her.
The family who had given her a temporary home had children and other dogs and was unable
to give her a forever home. When Speak St.Louis, the rescue team I work with, was contacted
about the dog, they offered to take her in.She went to a vet(兽医) for a basic health check. But
the vet didn't have great news. Her mouth was swollen(肿胀的) with all sorts of problems. Two
teeth fell out during cleaning and eleven more had to be pulled out.
Luckily,a good friend of mine,a dog trainer with a soft heart for seniors, had agreed to
adopt Magdalen. On the trip to the trainer's home, the sweet senior looked so relaxed in our
backseat.I felt a great sense of relief and pleasure.
Her owner needed some temporary help when he was sick But I can't imagine why he
wouldn't have wanted her back.I think of my own dog and dogs we lost to old age in the
past. We're family and we stay that way forever. She'd be able to live a good life,I hoped,in her
new home!
4.What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The problems the dog met. B. What the dog needed most.
C. Where the dog was treated. D. The former owners of the dog.
5.What is the author's job probably?
A. Looking for lost dogs owners. B. Looking for homes for dogs.
C. Treating sick dogs. D. Training old dogs.
6.How did the author feel on her way to her friend's home?
A. Hopeful and proud. B. Surprised and curious.
C. Nervous and grateful. D. Relieved and happy.
7.What does the author think of Magdalen's owner giving her up?
A. She thought he made a wise decision. B. She was certain he would regret.
C. She believed it was painful for him. D. She didn't understand his behaviour.

Artificial intelligence—or AI—is the computer code (代码) that allows a machine to do
something that normally requires a human brain. On TikTok,for instance,AI sorts the posts so
高二英语 第 3 页,共 8 页
that the first ones you see are likely to be those you'd prefer. But before an AI can do any of that,
developers must train it.And the training consumes energy.
AI training is powered mostly by fossil(化石) fuels, according to one of the largest
studies of its kind.Less than 25 percent of AIs use low-carbon energy sources such as
hydroelectricity and nuclear power during training. In fact, researchers now worry that training's
appetite for energy could soon become a huge problem. The energy to develop AI comes out of the
electrical net.And in most parts of the world, making electricity emits(排放) carbon dioxide
and other greenhouse gases into the air.
Language-processing AI systems learn by devouring(吞食) texts in a particular
language. This might include"reading"everything ever published online in some language,
including libraries full of old books that have been digitized.Such data-intensive training uses a lot
of energy. To translate between English and Chinese, for example,an AI model may deal with
millions or even billions of translated books and articles. In this way,it learns which words and
phrases match.Later, when given a new text,it recommends its own translation.
In 2019,researchers calculated the impact of developing AI model named Transformer. It
released a massive 626,000 pounds of carbon dioxide. That's equal to the greenhouse gases that
would be poured by five American cars from when they were made to when they were junked.
Today, most AI development happens at data centers. These computer-filled buildings
account for some 2 percent US electricity use and 1 percent of global energy use. Some AIexperts
have sounded an alarm about the threat these energy giants pose.
8.What is AI training mainly energized by?
A. Fossil fuels. B. Solar energy.
C. Nuclear energy. D. Greenhouse gases.
9.What do we know about the language-processing AI systems?
A. They process limited texts. B. They will replace translators.
C. They seldom read digital books. D. They are energy-consuming.
10.Why does the author mention Transformer in paragraph 4?
A. To highlight its significance. B. To speak highly of AI's power.
C. To demonstrate researchers' creativity. D. To stress its effect on the environment.
11.What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. AI's development poses a threat to data centers.
B. The energy consumption of AI can't be ignored.
C. AI is effectively transforming the way we learn.
D. People should take action to reduce gas emission.

Search engines, virtual worlds, the Internet —ever get the feeling you're living in a science
fiction fantasy?Well indeed you are.For more than a century, inventors have been driven to
create what sci-fi writers have boldly imagined before.
As a boy in India,Amit Singhal dreamed of space. "Those were my favorite times as a little
child on a hot summer day, sitting in a room watching Star Trek," he says.Singhal now works
at Google, where he is in charge of maintaining Google's search algorithms (算法). "But my
main job is to dream about what searching would look like a few years from now," he says. And
what do those dreams look like?Singhal was fascinated by the way Star Trek characters simply
高二英语 第 4 页,共 8 页
talk to a computer to find out about almost anything,so now he's working on Google's voice-
recognition search products.
Singhal isn't unique.Scratch the surface (作肤浅的探讨) of many inventors in Silicon
Valley, and there's a kid who loved science fiction underneath. "Teenagers read these things,
they fall in love with the novel, they get inspired by the technology and they keep it in the back
of their minds till they're about 30,and then they build it," technology forecaster (预言家)
Paul Saffo says.
The grandfather of science fiction is probably Jules Verne, whose novels have inspired
whole generations of people. And ever since Verne, there's been a long list of inventions that
come from science fiction.Buck Rogers inspired a generation of scientists excited about space
exploration.William Gibson dreamed up the Internet while writing Neuromancer on a manual
typewriter.Neal Stephenson predicted virtual worlds in his novel Snow Crash. One of his readers,
Philip Rosedale, built the virtual world Second Life based on the "Metaverse" from the novel.
Science fiction helps engineers see the meaning of their work, says Snow Crash author
Stephenson. It makes it "possible for these people to see a realized vision of what all of their efforts
could eventually lead to."
12.What can we learn about Singhal?
A. He has shown less enthusiasm for space.
B. He has strongly criticized the movie Star Trek.
C. He has dreamed of becoming a science fiction writer.
D. He has been exploring future possibilities of search engines.
13.What does Saffo say about science fiction?
A. It plants seeds of creativity in teenagers' hearts.
B. It helps readers understand real human issues.
C. It fails to live up to its full potential.
D. It should be based on scientific facts.
14.How is paragraph 4 mainly developed?
A. By presenting writers' achievements.
B. By analyzing the reasons for technological progress.
C. By making comparisons between fiction and reality.
D. By giving examples of innovations driven by science fiction.
15.What is the best title for the text?
A. Jules Verne imagined the world ahead
B. Science fiction inspires engineers to build our future
C. Why teens are fascinated by science fiction
D. Why science fiction writers are so good at predicting the future

Grandma Johnson came into the kitchen just as Ricky was putting his math notebook back int
