Shao Gang and Shao Qiang — twins born in 1990 in Shandong province — and their 30 male employees all wear uniforms to work. From cleaning oily cooker hoods and fixing cracks in windows, to dusting ceiling lights and even polishing the shell of your pet turtle, they do it all.
The twins originally came to Hangzhou at the end of 2015 to work as e-commerce livestream hosts, but when they turned up to film, they felt uncomfortable. “It was as if there was nowhere to stand because the house was packed so full of products for the livestreams,” Shao Gang said.
Before they opened Hangzhou Shenshi Housekeeping Service Company in May last year, the twins spent 10,000 yuan being trained to clean professionally by a household service company in Zhengzhou, Henan province. Once their company was up and running, they advertised by posting videos on online platforms, which are popular with the younger generation.
Business has been good and can bring in up to 300,000 yuan a month. As a result, the twins have opened new branches and now offer deep cleaning services in Shanghai, Hangzhou, Suzhou and a number of other cities, and have served thousands of customers. Even though many challenges remain in this corner of the service industry — including frequent quality complaints and labor conflicts—the twins have found that demand for their service is growing rapidly, especially among younger clients.
“More than 80 percent of our customers are young people,” Shao Gang said, explaining that even many born in the 2000s who have only just started to work are willing to spend money on deep cleaning. “For the young, who are more concerned with their quality of life, renting a house is not just about finding a place to sleep but about making a home where they can rest and relax, and so they are willing to pay for our services.”
4. What did the twins do to be a male housekeeper?
A. They paid to get professional training.
B. They learned from many women cleaners.
C. They watched a lot of videos on platforms.
D. They ran a successful home service company.
5. What’s the twins’ attitude to the future of male housekeeping?
A. Indifferent. B. Positive. C. Uncertain. D. Worried.
6. Why are the young willing to pay for deep cleaning?
A. They focus on a quality life.
B. They dislike doing housework.
C. They consider it a great fashion.
D. They have little time to deal with it.
7. What can we learn from the text?
A. It is never too late to learn.
B. Where there’s life, there’s hope.
C. Home’s the only castle that needs care.
D. One may distinguish himself in any trade.

Do you want to know how to increase bone density (密度) and why it’s important? We need strong bones to support us and allow us to move. They protect the brain, heart and other major organs from injury. We reach our “peak” bone mass in our late 20s, and we start to lose bone strength as we get older.
If you want to increase bone density, Vitamin C plays an essential role in the production of collagen, which in turn aids bone strength. “By contrast, lifestyle factors, such as stress, physical inactivity, high caffeine and alcohol intakes and smoking can contribute to impaired bone health,” says Hope, a nutrition consultant.
She adds: “Vitamin C is widely abundant in fruits and vegetables and consuming five portions of fruits and vegetables a day is enough to obtain the recommended 40mg per day. Vitamin C is water-soluble and therefore if high doses (剂量) are consumed as a supplement, the body will excrete the additional Vitamin C, which is not required.”
We all know that weight lifting is good for developing muscles, but did you know that it also helps increase bone density? Studies have shown that lifting weights and strength training can aid new bone growth and maintain the existing bone structure. “Weight lifting is a brilliant lifestyle factor that can contribute to supporting long-term bone health as it encourages constant bone turnover. As a result, regular weight lifting can contribute to the development of new bone, which in turn allows the bones to get stronger,” says Hope.
Strength training can particularly benefit elderly women, a study found. The women undertook a strength-training program for 12 months and saw “significant increases” in their bone density in the spine and hips — areas commonly affected by osteoporosis (骨质疏松).
8. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 1?
A. Introduce a topic. B. Give us a warning.
C. Provide some advice. D. Put forward a question.
9. What does the underlined word “excrete” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Take in. B. Pass on. C. Get rid of. D. Make up for.
10. What can weight lifting do according to Hope?
A. Change bone structure. B. Help cure osteoporosis.
C. Allow muscles to turn over. D. Encourage bones to grow.
11. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. What to eat at an old age
B. How to increase bone density
C. Why bone density is important
D. What we should do to keep healthy
D
I’m a glass-half-empty person. That’s not to say there’s no joy in my life; it just doesn’t come as naturally to me as it appears to others. And despite fully meeting the textbook definition of “the opposite of an optimist”, I’ve never thought to label myself a pessimist. But I worry about my gloomy (悲观的) outlook because how strongly our culture emphasizes the value of a positive one. Plenty of news articles present similar ideas in a black-and-white fashion: optimists live longer; pessimism kills.
But some research suggests that things aren’t so simple. In 2016, for example, a study of more than 700,000 British women failed to find a link between happiness and longevity. Could it be that culture plays a role — that British people, overall, are just more tolerant and accepting of gloominess?
Now, new research seems to show that cultural perceptions (感知) of mental states may indeed have an influence. The study authors analyzed health data from 1,017 American and 374 Japanese people.
Even after accounting for things like a person’s age, gender, socioeconomic status, and chronic health conditions, there was a significant difference between the two groups. “American adults who experience high levels of positive emotions, such as feeling’cheerful’ and’extremely happy’, are more likely to have healthy blood-lipid (血脂) analysis,” explains lead study author Jiah Yoo, but the same was not true among Japanese adults. Yoo explains, “In East Asian cultures, people commonly view positive emotions as having dark sides — they may attract unnecessary attention from others, and can be a distraction from focusing on important tasks.”
Past research has reached similar conclusions. In a 2015 Stanford study of 690 Chinese and American participants, for example, the Americans generally sought to maximize positive feelings and minimize negative ones, while the Chinese subjects were more likely to report that they commonly felt mixed emotions.
It’s comforting for me to hear that at least one culture may accept and embrace my gloominess. I need to be gentler with myself. Maybe I don’t need to shoot for delight. Maybe satisfaction can feel just as good.
12. Which country does the author probably come from?
A. America. B. Britain. C. Japan. D. China.
13. What does paragraph 4 mainly intend to tell us?
A. American adults are healthier than Japanese ones.
B. One’s health is involved with many factors.
C. Culture plays a role in one’s attitude towards positive emotions.
D. Health is linked with happiness.
14. What can we know from the text?
A. Never label yourself a pessimist.
B. Optimists don’t always live longer.
C. Positive emotions are essential to culture.
D. Optimists are better at adapting to society.
15 Where is the text probably from?
A A tourist guide. B. A story book.
C. A science magazine. D. A technology report.

This young guy was dressed in black. Nearly everything imaginable was tattooed (纹身).
“How about giving you a hand?” he said.
“Well... I think I can ...” I answered.
“Come on, it will only take me a while.” He took over the job. While watching him I happened to look back at his car and noticed someone sitting in the passenger seat. Thoughts of car robberies flashed through my mind. It began to pour.
“Look, just stop what you’re doing. I appreciate your help. You’d better get going. I’ll finish after the rain stops,” I said.
“Let me help you put your stuff back in the trunk,” he insisted. “Then get in my car. We’ll wait with you.”
“No, really. I’ll take care of everything,” I said.
“Get in,” he said as he grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the car. I jumped into it. “Oh, don’t be scared!” I thought to myself. Wet and tired I settled into the back seat.
Suddenly a weak voice came from the front seat. “Are you OK?” she said as she turned around.
“Yes,” I replied with relief seeing the old woman. It must be his mom.
“My name is Beatrice and this is my neighbor Jeff He insisted on stopping when seeing you struggling with the tire.”
“I am grateful for his help,” I said.

A Indifferent. B. Positive. C. Uncertain. D. Worried.
6. Why are the young willing to pay for deep cleaning?
A. They focus on a quality life.
B. They dislike doing housework.
C. They consider it a great fashion.
D. They have little time to deal with it.
7 What can we learn from the text?
A. It is never too late to learn.
B. Where there’s life, there’s hope.
C Home’s the only castle that needs care.
D. One may distinguish himself in any trade.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. A 7. D

【8题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第一段“Do you want to know how to increase bone density (密度) and why it's important? We need strong bones to support us and allow us to move. They protect the brain, heart and other major organs from injury.(你想知道如何增加骨密度以及为什么它很重要吗?我们需要强壮的骨骼来支撑我们,让我们移动。它们保护大脑、心脏和其他主要器官免受伤害)结合下文对骨密度重要性和如何增加骨密度可推知,作者在第一段引入了骨密度这一话题。故选A。
【9题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“Vitamin C is water-soluble and therefore if high doses (剂量) are consumed as a supplement(维生素C是水溶性的,因此如果服用大剂量补充剂)”和下文“which is not required.(那是不需要的)”可知,如果服用大剂量补充剂,身体会排出多余的维生素C。所以换线词的意思是“排除”的意思。故选C。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第四段“Weight lifting is a brilliant lifestyle factor that can contribute to supporting long-term bone health as it encourages constant bone turnover. As a result, regular weight lifting can contribute to the development of new bone, which in turn allows the bones to get stronger,” says Hope.(“举重是一种出色的生活方式因素,可以促进长期骨骼健康,因为它鼓励持续的骨骼更新。因此,定期举重可以促进新骨骼的发育,从而使骨骼变得更强壮,”霍普说)可知,举重可以促进骨骼生长。故选D。
【11题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文以及根据文章第一段“Do you want to know how to increase bone density (密度) and why it's important? We need strong bones to support us and allow us to move.
15. Where is the text probably from?
A. A tourist guide. B. A story book.
C. A science magazine. D. A technology report.
【答案】12. A 13. C 14. B 15. C

The change in sleeping hours
The graph demonstrates the average hours of sleep of the people from a country over the span from 1986 to 2022. Generally, people in that country sleep less and less. Back in 1986, people slept for about 8.5 hours on average. The number continued to decrease as time went by. In 2022, people slept on average about only 6.8 hours a day.
My quality of sleep is excellent. Every day, I sleep for about 7 hours. I sleep more on the weekend because I always have a long and hard day at school. 47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
I had a flat tire on a country road. I sat for a few minutes complaining. Then I began emptying my trunk to find tools to change the tire.
Darkness began to settle in. The tire was on the passenger side, away from the traffic, but making it difficult to benefit from the headlights of passing cars.
Suddenly a car pulled off behind me. I saw a man approaching me. “Hey, do you need any help?”
“My name is Beatrice and this is my neighbor Jeff. He insisted on stopping when seeing you struggling with the tire.”
“I am grateful for his help,” I said.
“Me too!” she said with a laugh. “Jeff takes me to visit my husband. I placed him in a nursing home and it’s 30 minutes away from my home. Every Monday we have a date.” She laughed. Then Jeff got into the car.

【答案】 “I know people who look like me don’t do nice things,” Jeff said. His voice was sincere, carrying a hint of sadness mixed with determination to break stereotypes. I realized that my initial judgments had been shallow and unfair. Jeff continued, “But I try to show that not all people with tattoos or a certain appearance are bad. I want to be the change.” His words touched me deeply, making me reflect on my own prejudices. I apologized for my earlier suspicions and thanked him again for his kindness.
Finally, the rain stopped. We all got out of the car, and Jeff quickly finished changing the tire. I felt a sense of warmth and gratitude towards him and Beatrice. They had not only helped me in a difficult situation but also taught me an important lesson about not judging people based on their appearance. As I drove away, I vowed to be more open-minded and compassionate in the future. Jeff and Beatrice reminded me that true character lies beyond the surface.
