Octopuses (章鱼) are kind of like aliens. They are amazing in many ways. They have three hearts. They can walk, they can swim, and they can drive themselves forward at high speeds. They can change color and copy what other animals do and they even know how to open screw-top jars (带螺旋盖的罐子) and how to use tools!
Octopuses are mollusks (软体动物). But unlike many other mollusks, they don’t have a shell. This allows them to pass through tiny spaces. Although octopuses mainly eat small fish, they are able to attack and kill small sharks.
One thing that makes octopuses seem like aliens is their blue blood. It is much better at giving oxygen (氧气) in cold and low-oxygen conditions than our red blood. Octopuses lose energy easily. This may help explain their outstanding intelligence: They can’t run after their prey (猎物) for a long time. They must use clever tricks.
As a hunter (捕猎者), an octopus brings its prey under control through the use of a powerful poison (毒素). The smaller the octopus, the stronger the poison. The ten-centimeter-long blue-ringed octopus is so poisonous that it can easily kill a grown man. Octopuses themselves can be delicious prey to many different animals in the ocean, but many of the times they are clever enough to know how to keep themselves safe. With their color-changing skin, octopuses can easily “hide” themselves or flash alarming colors to frighten their enemies away. If that doesn’t work, the octopus will send out a cloud of dark ink and quickly run away.
▲ They can turn in any direction. The arms are too complex (复杂的) to be controlled from a central brain. Instead, they work almost independently. An octopus gives instructions and believes that they will be carried out. This means that the animal doesn’t have a very good idea of where its arms are. They can’t work out the shape of something by feeling it, like we can.
19. What make the octopuses be better at giving oxygen in the ocean?
A. They have three hearts. B. They can use clever tricks.
C. They can kill small sharks. D. They have blue blood.
20. How does an octopus frighten its enemies away?
A. By flashing alarming colors. B. By color-changing skin.
C. By driving at a high speed. D. By running after the prey.
21. Which of the following can be put into the blank ▲ in the last paragraph?
A. Octopuses don’t have a good feeling of the shapes.
B. Octopuses’ arms can get instructions and work well.
C. Instructions from octopuses’ brains can go well.
D. The most amazing part of an octopus is its arms.
22. What’s the best title for the passage?

Habits get created in our brains kind of like the way a groove (沟, 槽) gets cut into a path.
Suppose you ride your bicycle on a path every day. The repeated pressure of your tires (轮胎) on the path wears a groove into it. In time, it’s hard not to ride in that groove. It takes effort to keep your bicycle out of the groove.
Similarly, a habit is cut into your brain. When you do something the same way repeatedly, or for the same reasons, your brain notices. “Oh, this is what we do when we’re avoiding homework? We pick up the phone? Got it.” You get “into the habit” of doing something.
You may even get pleasant feelings from the habit, at least at first. Your brain says, “Ah, fun and relaxation.” or, “I feel calmer. I like this!”
Finally, though, it can seem as if you just end up doing the habit without stopping. You may not know how to get the rewards (奖赏) you want without it.
But you can control your habits! One of the ways is just to notice them at first. Think about what rewards they give you. Joy? Activity when you’re bored? What do you get out of a habit, or what does it help you avoid?
Then think about whether you can get the rewards you want in other ways, without the downstairs you want. For example, instead of avoiding homework, you might deal with the challenge and feel the reward of getting it done! Notice how great it feels when you don’t have it weighing you down. Next time, remind yourself of that great feeling of the pride you felt—when you broke your habit.
When a habit attracts you, take a deep breath. Remind yourself of your goal. Tell your brain, “You’ve got this.” Because, with effort, and maybe some help and guidance, you do! You can make your bicycle stay out of the groove. You may even decide to ride down a different path.
23. What happens when we repeatedly do something according to the passage?
A. We get bored easily. B. It becomes less enjoyable.
C. We forget other things. D. It forms a habit in our brain.
24. What effects do habits have on us at first?
A. They quickly become uncontrollable. B. They provide rewards like fun or relaxation.
C. They help us avoid challenging tasks at once. D. They change the way our brain works over time.
25. What does the underlined “they” refer to in Paragraph 6?
A. Ways. B. Habits. C. Rewards. D. Activities.
26. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. The Management of Daily Behaviors B. The Positive Effects of Daily Activities
C. Understanding and Managing Your Habits D. Methods for Immediate Behavior Improvement

D
It was 10 p.m. on a Wednesday night. Fourteen-year-old Li Gong sat at his desk and stared at a blank sheet of paper. Li had to write a 600-word book report and the deadline was the next day. The problem? He hadn’t read the book. Li opened an AI app on his computer and entered the words “Book report, 600 words, The Old Man and the Sea.” In less than a minute, the boy had his book report.
Several days later, Li was called into his teacher’s office. Unfortunately, his teacher was very familiar with computers and AI apps. One of the apps examined his students’ writing to find cheating (作弊). Li had been caught! But his teacher was kind. Instead of punishing the boy, he explained that while AI apps were a helpful shortcut (捷径) for some things, there was no shortcut to learning. Learning how to write well has great value to understanding a subject and expressing your own ideas about it.
An AI app depends on a collection of information that someone has uploaded onto a computer system. A specially trained algorithm (算法) processes the information to produce the type of writing someone might need. It’s useful for writing business emails, legal documents and even news reports, but it’s not useful for expressing your personal ideas and thoughts.
Writing is the most difficult of all the language skills. You need to be good at grammar and have a good vocabulary. Writing also requires you to think clearly. For example, Li Gong was supposed to read Earnest Hemingway’s The Old Man and the Sea and find out what it was about.
It’s a sad story, but what does it all mean? If Li had read the book and written the book report, he would have learned a lot and had the satisfaction of expressing his own ideas about the story. That’s something AI cannot do.
27. Why was Li Gong called into his teacher’s office?
A. He had the best book report in class.
B. He missed the deadline for his book report.
C. His teacher wanted to praise him for his report.
D. His report was found as cheating through an AI app.
28. What does the sentence in Paragraph 2 mean?
A. Mastering writing skills is less important than learning to communicate orally.
B. Writing is a useful skill for understanding subjects, but not for personal expression.
C. Writing well only helps in better understanding of a subject, not in expressing ideas.
D. The ability to write well is important for learning a subject and sharing personal ideas.
29. According to Paragraph 3, how do AI apps work?
A. AI apps depend on users to write according to certain information.
B. AI apps use information and a computer system to make different writing.
C. AI apps mainly focus on expressing personal thoughts using specific instructions.
D. AI apps use special instructions and information to create writing for different purposes.
30. What may the writer of the passage agree with?
A. It’s necessary to read books for schoolwork.
B. It’s important to use grammar and vocabulary in writing.
C. AI can think clearly and express freely on the computer.
D. AI can’t meet the satisfaction of expressing one’s own ideas about a story.
【答案】27. D 28. D 29. B 30. D

【28题详解】
词句猜测题。根据“AI apps were a helpful shortcut (捷径) for some things, there was no shortcut to learning. Learning how to write well has great value to understanding a subject and expressing your own ideas about it.”可知学习没有捷径,学习如何写得好对理解一个主题和表达你自己的想法有很大的价值,即良好的写作能力对于学习一门学科和分享个人想法很重要。故选D。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据“An AI app depends on a collection of information that someone has uploaded onto a computer system. A specially trained algorithm (算法) processes the information to produce the type of writing someone might need.”可知人工智能应用程序依赖于某人上传到计算机系统上信息集合,一个经过专门训练的算法处理信息,以产生某人可能需要的写作类型。故选B。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据“If Li had read the book and written the book report, he would have learned a lot and had the satisfaction of expressing his own ideas about the story. That’s something AI cannot do.”可知如果李读了这本书,写了报告书,他会学到很多东西,并满足于表达自己对这个故事的想法,这是人工智能无法做到的,所以人工智能无法满足于表达自己对故事的想法。故选D。

A. Dangerous Octopuses B. Hunters in the Ocean C. Amazing Octopuses D. Aliens on the Earth
C
25 What does the underlined “they” refer to in Paragraph 6?
A Ways. B. Habits. C. Rewards. D. Activities.
B He missed the deadline for his book report.
