Language changes all the time. New words and phrases appear and grow. The words used by young people in the UK can be very different from those used by adults. Living in a multi—cultural (多元文化的) society has an effect on language, especially on young people, whose friends are often from a mix of backgrounds.
Young British people use lots of language that you usually can’t find in most dictionaries. These informal words and expressions are known as “slang (俚语)”. It is not possible to make a complete list of modern British slang. By the time the list were finished, it would be out of date! Here are a few examples:
“Sorted!”, “Sound!” and “Cool!” all mean “That’s good!”
“Whatever” means “I don’t care”. (e. g. A: But he says we can’t leave until we’ve finished. B:Whatever. I’m going.)
“He’s fine.” And “He’s fit.” both mean “He’s good—looking.” “Fine” and “fit” can describe a boy or a girl.
However, not everybody likes slang. A school in Sheffield asked its pupils to stop using slang words, such as hiya (hello). The head teacher says that if young people learn to speak “correctly”, this will help them get a place at university.
So, how important is it to understand these slang words and expressions? If you watch movies in English, chat online in English or are interested in English song lyrics (歌词), understanding slang will be very useful. You probably won’t see much slang in your English exam, though.
27.If you are happy for your best friend getting the first prize in a competition, which slang could best describe your feeling?
A.Whatever. B.Fine. C.Hiya. D.Sorted.
28.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.Modern slang changes very quickly.
B.“Fit” is only used to describe boys.
C.Young people always use the same slang as their parents.
D.Understanding slang is very helpful in doing English exam papers.
29.The writer’s main purpose is to ________.
A.explain the best way to learn slang
B.tell readers about British slang
C.discuss that slang should be stopped
D.interest readers with slang words
【答案】27.D 28.A 29.B
根据“‘Sorted!’, ‘Sound!’ and ‘Cool!’ all mean ‘That’s good!’”
根据“It is not possible to make a complete list of modern British slang. By the time the list was finished, it would be out of date!” 故选A。
D
Not long ago, reading the newspaper in the morning with a cup of coffee or in the evening after dinner was common. However, the newspaper industry has been declining (下降) over the past ten years. It’s not only newspapers, though Magazine companies are finding it hard to keep their readers. Buying paper books is also declining as well. Why is this happening? Simply, it’s because of the Internet.
It used to be that newspapers, magazines and books were how people connected to the rest of the world and kept in touch with news and interests. However, with 40% of the world connected to the Internet, the need for the printed word is becoming much lower because it’s easy to find information online. People no longer need to wait for a news or magazine to arrive. They can now find all the information or read material they want on the Internet whenever they want. No longer do people have to turn through large pages in the newspaper or carry magazines around. Anything and everything one might need can now easily be found through a computer or a smart phone. Though books have faced a slower decline, the amount and use of e-books and e-readers have been on the rise. After all, it is much easier to carry an e-book in one’s back pocket or bag than it is to carry a heavy book around. E-books do not take up space in the home and they are also always there when needed.
With fewer readers of printed newspapers and magazines, more advertisers are also moving to the internet and media. As a result, a number of newspapers and magazines have been forced out of business. Some others have even to move online in order to try and keep going.
If this situation continues, the decline of the printed word may lead to a future generation (一代人) that know what it is like to hold a newspaper, magazine or book. To some, it will be a sign of the future. To others, it will be the sad end of a valued tradition.
30.This passage is mainly about ________.
A.what is happening to printed materials B.why e-books become so popular
C.when people began to read less D.why e-books become so popular
31.According to the passage, why did people lose interest in printed texts?
A.People don’t need to pay for books.
B.People can get information from somewhere else.
C.People don’t like all of the advertisements.
D.People get to know everything from advertisers.
32.Which of the following statements are FACTS?
a. 40% of the world is connected to the internet.
b. Some people think e-books are always available when needed.
c. The newspaper industry has been declining over the past ten years.
d. The decline of the printed word will be the sad end of a valued tradition.
A.a, b B.c, d C.a, c D.b, d
33.The overall tone (总基调) of this passage is probably _________.
A.interesting and funny. B.boring and difficult
C.personal and humorous D.serious and scientific
【答案】30.A 31.B 32.C 33.D
根据第一段中的“It’s not only newspapers, though Magazine companies are finding it hard to keep their readers. Buying paper books is also declining as well. Why is this happening?” 故选A。
根据第二段中的“However, with 40% of the world connected to the Internet, the need for the printed word is becoming much lower because it’s easy to find information online…They can now find all the information or read material they want on the Internet whenever they want……Anything and everything one might need can now easily be found through a computer or a smart phone.”
根据第一段中的“However, the newspaper industry has been declining (下降) over the past ten years.”以及第二段中的“However, with 40% of the world connected to the Internet,”可知,在过去的十年里,报业一直在衰退,全球40%的人口已接入互联网,所以C项正确。故选C。

There is a class debate (辩论) about energy next Thursday. I will take part, but first I need to plan and study. We don’t know which side we will be on until the day before. This means we have to prepare to speak for both sides. First of all, I can make a list of energy sources (资源) with its advantages and disadvantages. So it’s time for me to collect information and data for the debate.
For example, we might have to talk about gasoline (汽油) as an energy source. If so, one group would use the information in a science book to say it is made from oil, a fossil fuel Fossil fuels were made from the remains (遗骸) of ancient plants and animals. They formed millions of years ago. However, the other group can argue about a big problem with using fossil fuels—we are using them much faster than it takes for them to form. The argument may come from an interview of a group of scientists who predict that we will run out of fossil fuels in 50 years.
Another source we might need to debate about is wind energy. One group would say that it is a renewable energy source. This is because wind will never run out and it is free. We can interview some experts to get more helpful information. For example, some Chinese experts have said that a large wind turbine (风力涡轮) can make enough energy to power a city. Another benefit is that it does not harm the environment. But the group against using wind energy can use more scientific data on the Internet to argue that it is not as efficient (高效的) as other sources. A scientific website shows that less than half of the wind collected can be changed into electricity. Also, building wind turbines everywhere will cost 600 billion U.S. dollars, according to CCTV news.
We now use more energy than we did in the past. ______________ The debate will be hard, but I know I will be ready, not only for the debate itself, but also for the future energy challenge!
34.Must the writer prepare to speak for both sides?
35.What are fossil fuels made from?
36.According to the passage, how can the writer collect useful information and data for the debate?
37.Add a couple of sentences in the blank of the last paragraph to make the whole passage complete. (No more than 30 words.)
34.Yes./Yes, he/she must. 35.Fossil fuels are made from the remains of ancient plants and animals. 36.By reading science books, interviewing scientist or experts, looking for data on the Internet/online, and watching TV news. 37.We need to think about what we use and how we use them./We need to use energy wisely because there isn’t enough for our future needs.
34.根据“This means we have to prepare to speak for both sides.” Yes./Yes, he/she must.
35.根据“Fossil fuels were made from the remains (遗骸) of ancient plants and animals”可以得知化石燃料是由古代动植物的遗骸形成的。故填Fossil fuels are made from the remains of ancient plants and animals.
36.根据“If so, one group would use the information in a science book…”;“The argument may come from an interview of a group of scientists who predict that we will run out of fossil fuels in 50 years.”;“But the group against using wind energy can use more scientific data…A scientific website shows that less than half of the wind collected can be changed into electricity.”以及“Also, building wind turbines everywhere will cost 600 billion U.S. dollars, according to CCTV news.” By reading science books, interviewing scientist or experts, looking for data on the Internet/online, and watching TV news.
37.根据“We now use more energy than we did in the past.” We need to think about what we use and how we use them./We need to use energy wisely because there isn’t enough for our future needs.

Trouble in my life
Hello, everyone. I’m really happy to share my ideas on trouble in my life with all of you here.
In my opinion, trouble is like a test that helps us grow. Last term I had big trouble in math. I couldn’t understand geometry at all. My test scores kept dropping and I felt so upset. But I didn’t give up. I asked my teacher for help after class and practiced problems every evening. Slowly, I began to see progress. Now I realize that trouble is not scary if we face it bravely.
That experience taught me to stay positive when meeting difficulties. Remember, every trouble can be a stepping stone to success if we try our best!

The best gift I have received
The best gift I’ve received is an English novel called The Hobbit. It was a gift for my 14th birthday from my friend Jimmy. Attracted by its well-designed cover page, I had great interest in reading it.
Though it was the first time I had read an English novel, I found it was not that difficult to understand.
Besides, I was surprised to find English could be so lively and interesting. It completely changed my idea about learning a foreign language. As a result, I made up my mind to read more novels in English.
Reading is always a wonderful time. The more I read, the more I know about the world. I’d like to thank my friend again for his fantastic gift.

A.interesting and funny. B.boring and difficult
C.personal and humorous D.serious and scientific
