Each nation has many good people who help to take care of others. For example, some high school and college students in the United States often spend many hours as volunteers in hospitals, orphanages (孤儿院) or homes for the aged. They read books to the people in these places, or they just visit them and play games with them or listen to their problems.
Other young people volunteer to collect food or money, or they work in the homes of people who are sick or old. They paint, clean up, or repair their houses, do their shopping or mow their lawns. For boys who no longer have fathers there is an organization called Big Brothers. College students and other men take these boys to baseball games or on fishing trips and help them to get to know things that boys usually learn from their fathers.
Each city has a number of clubs where boys and girls can go to play games or learn crafts. Some of these clubs show movies or organize short trips to the mountains, the beaches, museums or other places of interest. Katherine Commale is an 11-year-old girl from Pennsylvania. At the age of five she began raising money to buy nets for children in Africa to help stop the spread of malaria (疟疾).
When she was five, Katherine learnt about malaria in Africa. She learnt that every 30 seconds a child died from this disease. She also learnt that people wouldn’t get that disease if they had enough bed nets. “I was really sad to learn that a child died every half a minute because of malaria.” says Katherine, “I wanted to send nets right away, so that’s what I did.”
Five-year-old Katherine made presentations at churches and schools. She told students and others how important bed nets were for Africans. After people heard the presentations, many of them donated money. Katherine sent the money to NBN. NBN is an organization that sends bed nets to Africa.

A new plan has been made to provide free, comfortable overnight school dormitories (宿舍) for left-behind children living in the poor places.
“Flying Box” is the project of well-known reporter, Deng Fei, and the charity China Youth Development Foundation (中国青少年发展基金会). Deng says that some children in the poor places have to walk for hours every day, just to get to school. As a result, many have started skipping classes (逃课) because it is too tiring. So he and the charity are planning to build dormitories that can be easily built near schools, so children do not have to walk a long way.
The 37-year-old man organized (组织) a number of groups through the Internet to help children. He first started to help the children with their difficulties in April 2011. During a reporting trip to Guizhou Province, he said he was surprised to find that many schools had no restaurants. A second-grade education has not stopped waste collector Jose Gutierrez from bringing the gift of reading to thousands of Colombian children.Gutierrez started collecting books from the waste almost 20 years ago. And now the first floor of his small house is a community library. It has about 20,000 books.
He says books are luxuries(奢侈品)for children in poor neighborhoods such as his. New reading material at bookstores is too expensive. There are 19 public libraries in Bogota. But these libraries are located far away from poorer areas.
The 53-year-old Gutierrez has a love of reading that he says comes from his mother. She always read to him even though she was too poor to keep him in school.
“She used to read the stories every night,” said Gutierrez. He has traveled to book fairs in Mexico and Chile to share his experience of starting a library with discarded(被丢弃的)reading material. “To me, books are the greatest invention and the best thing that can happen to a human being.”
Gutierrez has also received thousands of donated books. He has sent many to other libraries around the country. That is because he does not have room for them all.
Gutierrez likes reading works by authors such as Leo Tolstoy and Victor Hugo. His favorite books include One Hundred Years of Solitude and The General in His Labyrinth by Colombia’s Nobel Prize-winning novelist Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
“There is nothing more beautiful than having a book in your pocket, in your bag or inside your car,” Gutierrez says.
