3. An old gentleman who lives a few doors away from me can always be seen with a bag. He goes out by himself and picks up plastic bottles, plastic bags and pieces of paper everywhere. He does it all carefully and never complains. The children in the nearby school are probably responsible for some of that litter. “There will be some time when they know better,” he said. “It’s just not yet. So, I’ll do it for them.” Well, this morning I was out walking my neighbor’s dog when I saw another neighbor, a much younger man, doing the same thing! He had his two little sons with him and they were having good fun trying to pick up the litter. “What a good job you are doing”, I said to him. “Well, an older fellow in our street does this”, he said. “And my friend and I thought it wasn’t fair that he had to do it all the time, so now we take turns.” Not only was he taking a turn, not only did he have a friend join in as well, but he was passing on the lesson to the next generation (一代)! By the time I had returned the dog to my neighbor, I looked again and his children’s friends had joined in! This man was teaching a whole group of young children to keep their own street clean. An older man had set an example for him and now he was passing it on—the next generation is doing what he did and the generation to come after that! 1.The old gentleman picks up the litter _____. As a volunteer teacher, I travelled a long way to a small village school in Longzhou, Guangxi. On my way there, I thought about the village, the school, and the children there. However, my heart sank when I arrived there. It wasn’t what I expected. It didn’t look like a school at all. The school had only 3 rooms, one for Grades 1, 2 and 3, and another for Grades 4, 5 and 6. There was a third one for me. The children welcomed me warmly on my first day. They asked me a lot of questions, and I told them stories and my life in Shanghai. The next day, I gave them a test to find out their level. To my surprise, although (尽管) the test was very easy, over half of them failed it, yet they all wanted to learn new things. I knew they needed me. I am busy preparing lessons, and reading test papers every night. I enjoyed teaching these lovely and hard-working children, and I could see that they were making progress with my help. I have also learned a lot from them. I understand their lives better and we are now good friends. I have worked in Longzhou for a year now. I’m very happy, and the experience has been very useful for me. I love the small village and the children. In fact, I would like to continue working here. 1.The writer found there were only _____ rooms in that school. Some of them once belonged to him; some belonged to his friends. But soon the shoes will have new owners, poor children in the USA and 20 other countries, thanks to Greg’s Share Our Soles (鞋底) (S.O.S) charity. Greg was a high school running star in a small town in California. He had to stop running for months because his knee was injured. “I started thinking about all the things I got from running—the health, the friendships and the confidence.” he says. “And I realized there are children who don’t even have shoes.” Greg collected his own sports shoes and then called his friends and the town. Now he has set up collection boxes in his town. So far, S.O.S has collected and donated more than 3,000 pairs of shoes. And Greg has cleaned almost all of them. “People think of it as duty work,” he says, “but I like doing it, because I feel happy when I’m doing it. It’s not work I want to pass on to someone else.” For many poor children, the shoes they have received mean opportunities. Two young boys in southern California used to go to school on alternate days (隔日) because they both shared a pair of shoes. They were too big for one boy and too small for the other. Thanks to S.O.S, each brother received his own pair of shoes. The boys now go to school every day. When they graduate, they say they will help others, just as Greg helped them. 1. Now he is planning to pass on his love for farms to students. 28-year-old Mr. Feilden is going to set up a charity He plans to raise money for students from city schools who would like to visit Jamie’s Farm and experience country life. Mr. Feilden first got the idea for his project when he started working for the Teach First Project after graduating from university in Edinburgh. “When I worked in a school in Croydon, I realized the students there had little experience of farm life. Many of the students in the school had never been out of Croydon before. Of course, they had never seen farm animals,” said Mr. Feilden. “So I opened up a small farm in the school. It was a real success.” Mr. Feilden once took a group of students back to his hometown. There the students saw many animals. They had lots of fun spending time in the countryside. Since then he has done more work on his own farm project. He even started working for it full time. Mr. Feilden said, “Living and working in the countryside can give children a chance to eat food produced on the farm. They can also do some gardening, cooking and be with animals there.” Now Jamie’s Farm needs volunteers. If you are interested in donating your money or time, you can get in touch with Jamie by emailing him. 1.Did Jamie Feilden start to be interested in farms at a very young age? ________________________________________________________________ 2.Why did Jamie Feilden want to set up a farm in the school? ________________________________________________________________ 3.Why is Jamie Feilden going to set up a charity? ________________________________________________________________ 4.What can students do on Jamie’s Farm besides eating food produced on the farm? ________________________________________________________________ 5.If people want to do something for Jamie’s Farm, how can they contact with Jamie? ________________________________________________________________ 阅读理解答案 3 1. And my friend and I thought it wasn’t fair that he had to do it all the time, so now we take turns." The school had only 3 rooms. It wasn't what I expected.
