Cecily has always loved her baby dolls. When she was six, she needed them more than ever: She had to go through brain-cancer operations and MRI scans (核磁共振扫描), but she couldn’t take her favourite dolls with her into MRI machine because they had metal in them.
So Cecily and her mom - a home-schooler of seven kids and a professional doll maker made a special doll, using weighted glass and other MRI-safe materials, that could stay with Cecily during the long imaging appointments.
The doll was also unique in that it had no facial features. “That’s so they can have any emotion,” says Cecily, who was inspired to create these dolls, called “Blessing Babies”, for other sick kids. She and her mom began making more, donating some to children’s hospitals and selling others to fundraise.
Soon, doll makers worldwide also began contributing, sending boxes of their handmade dolls to support the cause. Cecily began selling handmade plush puppies and inspirational clothing patches (徽章), in addition to running toy drives and fundraisers for various charities. Including money and gift donations, Cecily has raised more than $2, 00, 000 so far.
Today Cecily calls herself a brain-cancer survivor and “childhood cancer awareness fighter,” but she is still followed closely by her team at the children’s hospital. When asked for advice on successful fundraising, she stresses the importance of generosity. “You don’t get poor by giving,” Cecily says. “Because you always get something back, one way or another.”
4. Why did Cecily and her mother make the special doll in the beginning?
A. To sell it for money. B. To cheer up Cecily’s fellow patients.
C. To donate it to a charity. D. To keep Cecily company during scans.
5. In what way are “Blessing Babies” different from other dolls?
A. They wear no expressions on their faces.
B. They are designed by famous companies.
C. They can reduce sick children’s physical pain.
D. They are made of environmentally friendly materials.
6. What do the underlined words “toy drives” in paragraph 4 probably refer to?
A. Toy-selling shops. B. Toy-producing companies.
C. Toy-collecting events. D. Toy-designing businesses.
7. What message do Cecily’s words convey in the last paragraph?
A. A good deed is never lost. B. Two heads are better than one.
C. A friend in need is a friend indeed. D. Where there is a will, there is a way.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. A

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段第二句“She had to go through brain-cancer operations and MRI scans, but she couldn’t take her favourite dolls with her into MRI machine because they had metal in them. (她不得不经历脑癌手术和核磁共振扫描,但她无法将她最喜欢的娃娃带进核磁共振仪器,因为娃娃中含有金属。)”可知,Cecily在进行脑癌手术和核磁共振扫描时,无法携带她最喜欢的娃娃,因为这些娃娃含有金属。而这个特殊娃娃,使用了对核磁共振安全的材料,以便在扫描期间陪伴。故选D项。

In a remote part of Ecuador’s Amazon rainforest, river transport is far more common than road travel. Here, boats move along the Wichimi River, a wide channel that snakes through the thick plants, and powering the silent boats is the Ecuadorian sunshine.
The boats have been provided by Kara Solar, a non-profit organization based in the region. The Achuar here are responsible for fixing, running and maintaining the boats — the solar boats are shaping daily life for the community by offering transport for education, health services and eco-tourism.
For years, many Achuar have used gasoline-powered boats on the river, but the oil must be flown in by plane from Ecuador’ s capital, Quito, making it more expensive and adding to the carbon emissions (碳排放) connected with its use. “Gasoline motors use a lot of oil and pollute the river,” said Angel Wasump, Kara Solar’s director of operations and a member of the Achuar community. “Since the solar boats arrived, families have been giving up these motors completely,” he added.
Formally launched in 2018, Kara Solar is staffed by members of the Achua r community. According to the organization, the boats operating in Ecuador have completed over 300 trips in total, carrying over 1,000 passengers and traveling over 450 kilometers per month. The most common uses are transporting local children to and from school and providing wildlife tours for eco-tourists.
As well as reducing carbon emissions and pollution, the silent boats mean eco-tourists can get a closer view of wildlife without scaring it away. “The boat serves as a symbol of what eco-friendliness could look like,” said Wasump. “It’s like a return to what’s most important in Achuar culture. These boats have represented a way for us to reconnect with this vision of what development could look like.”
8. What can we learn about the Achuar from the first two paragraphs?
A. They mostly earn their living by fishing.
B. They depend much on boats in their lives.
C. They are enthusiastic about voluntary work.
D. They have little contact with the outside world.
9. What is a reason for the introduction of the solar boats?
A. They travel faster. B. They are easy to operate.
C. They are cost-effective. D. They carry more passengers.
10. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The features of the solar boats.
B. The applications of the solar boats.
C. The effects of the solar boats on people’s lives.
D. The advantages of the solar boats over traditional ones.
11. What does Wasump intend to stress in the last paragraph?
A. Cultural difference. B. Community spirit.
C. Environmental awareness. D. Technological development.
【答案】8. B 9. C 10. B 11. C

About 1 million people use American Sign Language (ASL) as their main way to communicate. ASL is important for children’s development of language. But learning ASL is often not that easy.
Statistics show that 98 percent of hearing-impaired (听力受损) people do not receive their education in sign language and 72 percent of families do not communicate by signing. Since nine-out-of-ten children who are born without hearing are born to hearing parents, learning sign language skills are significant for these children and families.
Now, a new app makes it easier to learn. Fingerspelling. xyz, an app from Hello Monday — a creative studio — teaches the correct hand positions in real time on web browsers. The app uses people’s webcams to track their hand movements while checking their accuracy (准确性).
The app begins by giving the user a series of words and the hand positions for them. Then the app user tries the word and they are given feedback (反馈) until they can properly complete the word. While the app will not make someone fluent in ASL, the creators hope that it will encourage people to take a course on ASL and fingerspelling.
The new app is different from other language apps because of the gaming-like technology it uses. This technology offers a more attractive learning experience than the traditionally used methods of learning sign language which include books and videos. It’s important to note that in ASL, fingerspelling is used for names, when there is no sign for a word, or when a person doesn’t know the sign.
The game was created together with The American Society for Deaf Children, an organization devoted to bringing families together through sign language, is available for free. The organization also offers online courses and a directory of children’s stories that were translated into ASL. Language is a gift that is too important not to share.
12. What does the author imply in paragraph 2?
A. Many people don’t take ASL seriously.
B. ASL should be accessible to more people.
C. It is too difficult for people to learn ASL.
D. ASL enjoys great popularity in the country.
13. How does the app work?
A. By recognizing and translating texts.
B By giving and correcting the hand positions.
C. By collecting and studying the user’s feedback.
D. By tracking and improving the user’s experience.
14. What is special about Fingerspelling. xyz?
A. It is convenient for the user to search.
B. It includes various books and videos.
C. It makes the learning more interesting.
D. It is based on face recognition technology.
15. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To introduce a product. B. To record an event.
C. To recommend a course. D. To comment on an invention.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. C 15. A

____19____
If it’s been more than 2 days since you met, remind them who you are. Since you exchanged numbers when you met, they probably didn’t forget about you. Keep your first text simple by stating who you are, where you met, and mention that you really enjoyed meeting them.
Avoid over-bothering them with texts.
It can be pretty anxious-making if the person you’ve texted isn’t responding. It’s easy to get nervous and send more texts, just hoping that something will get their attention.____20____ They might be busy at work, on vacation, or dealing with a family situation. 第二节(满分20分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写一段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
One autumn day, I went out for a walk on the natural areas beyond my house and decided to go down towards the river through the valleys that cut through the cliff sides. About a mile and a half from my home, two dogs started barking in that “don’t come any closer to me” way. I couldn’t see them, but they were really loud as their barks echoed (回响) up the rocky slopes.
At this point, there were no people for at least a mile and a half and certainly no house dogs out there, so I started looking around. Up the cliff (悬崖) side, I saw these two beagles. I climbed about 50 feet up to them. The dogs’ names were Copper and Toddy, which were printed on a small wooden board tied to their neck chains. Maybe they tried to chase some deer or hare but unluckily got stuck.
Toddy, the female dog, was stuck between a fallen tree and the bank and couldn’t move. Copper, the male dog, was so weak that he could only take a few steps to try to keep me away before he had to lie down. It’s really amazing to me how devoted the male dog was, staying on that cliff side with the female dog for such a long time even though he could hardly walk. I figured that the two dogs were inseparable (不离不弃).
After about 30 minutes, the female still wouldn’t let me get close without biting at me. It was getting dark. With so many wild animals in the woods, I figured they wouldn’t make it another night. As a dog lover for 20 years, I wouldn’t allow anything like this to happen.
注意:
1.续写词数应为100左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I decided to earn the male’s trust first.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I decided to earn the male’s trust first. I slowly approached Copper, speaking softly and offering him some treats I had in my pocket. After a while, he seemed to sense my kindness and stopped growling. I then carefully reached out and gently petted him. Encouraged, I inched closer to Toddy, pulled the tree away slowly and set the female dog free, which made me earn both dogs’ trust. As the male dog was too weak to walk, I decided to carry him up the cliffs and out of the valleys with the female one following behind, which worked. As the night fell, I led the two exhausted dogs home. I posted their photos and names on local social media, waiting for their owner. Meanwhile, the two dogs were wagging their tails as if expressing their gratitude.

A They mostly earn their living by fishing.
C Environmental awareness. D. Technological development.
D
B. By giving and correcting the hand positions.
C. By collecting and studying the user’s feedback.
D. By tracking and improving the user’s experience.
14. What is special about Fingerspelling. xyz?
A. It is convenient for the user to search.
B. It includes various books and videos.
C. It makes the learning more interesting.

You’ve just met someone impressive and you even got their phone number— score! But how on earth do you get a text conversation started with them if you hardly know them? ____16____ And you know how to text someone you just met in a smooth and natural way.
Get the ball rolling with cute emojis (表情符号).
An emoji text works best if you send it a few hours after meeting them. Emojis work great because they’re casual, fun, and you don’t have to stress over a perfectly worded text. Send a short string of emojis and go with cute ones like the winking face, kissing face, or heart eyes. Hopefully, they’ll respond with their own string of emojis or simply say “hi.”____17____
Bring up something you noticed about them.
This is the perfect icebreaker as long as you remember a good detail. ____18____If so, comment on it. For example: “I noticed you were wearing a Taylor Swift shirt the other day. I’m a big fan! What did you think of her newest album?”
____19____
If it’s been more than 2 days since you met, remind them who you are. Since you exchanged numbers when you met, they probably didn’t forget about you. If some time has passed since your first meeting, though, you may not be super fresh in their mind!
Give them a day or so to respond. If they never respond, you could follow up or just delete their number and move on. After all, there are other fish in the sea!
A. Either way, you’re in!
B. Stop the desire to do this!
C. Limit how often you text them.
D. Check out our list below for tips.
E. Be casual and direct if it’s been a while.
F. If they do respond, they don’t feel embarrassed.
G. Were they wearing a band T-shirt, or carrying a book?

第二节(满分20分)
注意:
1.续写词数应为100左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I decided to earn the male’s trust first.
