Bhavin Shastri’s interest in light started young. He recalls an experiment that he saw as a child: A plastic water bottle was stuck near its base such that a steady stream of water flowed out and downward under the force of gravity. A light shined through the hole in the bottle and, to Shastri’s amazement, it didn’t continue on a horizontal path. Instead, it bent downward with the stream of water. “I was just so completely blown away by this experiment,” he says.
Since then, Shastri has been thinking about how light can be controlled, while also exploring other research interests. In college, he worked with a professor who was researching machine learning. As a postdoc at Princeton University, Shastri met physicist Paul Prucnal. He told Shastri about his research creating a light that behaves like a biological neuron (神经元), and how the team was looking to compute with such light. That idea caught Shastri’s attention.
Though researchers have used light to send, store and process data in the lab, photonic (光子的) computing is still at its early stage. Shastri has set out to push those boundaries. He engineers, builds and performs experiments on chip-sized (芯片大小的) photonic devices. His team began by studying simpler devices similar to a single neuron, analyzing how they could function like a biological neuron. Years later, in a yet-to-be-published work, the researchers have demonstrated that a chip with 100,000 neuronlike components can perform 120 billion operations per second, about 40 times faster than the average electronic computer.
Daniel Brunner, a computing researcher at FEMTO-ST Institute, praised Shastri’s groundbreaking work. “I can’t even count the publications where he basically laid the foundation” for using photonics to create physical neural networks, Brunner says.
Shastri may be set on transforming computing, but his work is motivated by a decades-old fascination with light and its properties. “I have been very lucky to be able to do something,” he says, “that has always been my childhood dream.”
4. What attracted Shastri most about the experiment in paragraph 1?
A. Effects of gravity on objects. B. Properties of plastic products.
C. The pressure of flowing water. D. The phenomenon of light bending.
5. What did Prucnal inspire Shastri to do?
A. Take an interest in light. B. Analyse the function of neurons.
C. Research into photonic computing. D. Learn about machine learning.
6. What is paragraph 3 mainly about?
A. Challenges Shastri faces in developing the chip.
B. The practical application of photonic computing.
C The computing performance of electronic computers.
D. Achievements Shastri’s team makes in photonic computing.
7. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. The Wonders of Light B. The Light Pursuer’s Journey
C. In the Footsteps of Scientists D. Development of Computing Technology
C
Grey reef sharks are having to abandon the coral reefs they call home. Scientists, using a combination of satellite remote sensing and a network of sound receivers on the seabed, have discovered sharks are deserting coral reefs at times of environmental stress from high temperatures that can lead to coral bleaching (白化) events.
An international research team attached sound trackers to more than 120 sharks and installed receivers around coral reefs to monitor shark movements in the Indian Ocean between 2013 to 2020. This has important consequences for both the sharks and the reefs. The research provides the first evidence of how reef change in response to environmental stress, something that is becoming both more extreme and more frequent, is affecting the movement of sharks. Grey reef sharks are a common, resident predator (猎食者) to the reefs of the Indo-Pacific, risking away from the reef to feed. Many are choosing to move into offshore, deeper and cooler waters, which is concerning. Many reefs around the globe have already seen significant declines in sharks due to exploitation (开采) and this finding has the potential to accelerate the trend.
Importantly, sharks moving away impacts the fragile balance in reef ecosystems. As large predators, grey reef sharks play a very important role in coral reef ecosystems. They maintain a delicately balanced food web on the reef and they also cycle nutrients onto coral reefs from deeper waters where they often feed. A loss of sharks, and the nutrients they bring, could affect the recovery of reefs during periods of high environmental stress.
As climate change brings increasing uncertainty and more and more frequent extreme stress events, the important ecological role these predators play on coral reefs is likely to change, as they spend more time away from the reefs they are attached to. The implications of this are not yet fully understood but given the complex balance of species and nutrient interactions that occur on coral reefs, there will certainly be substantial changes.
8. What is the main reason behind the changes in the reefs?
A. Global warming. B. Ocean pollution. C. Illegal hunting. D. Ecological imbalance.
9. What does the underlined word “trend” refer to in paragraph 2?
A. The hunting of sharks. B. The destruction of reefs.
C. The exploitation of human. D. The reduction in shark’s number.
10. What’s the result of sharks moving away?
A. Reducing the nutrients in the sea. B. Adding to the environmental stress.
C. Speeding up the recovery of the reefs. D. Breaking the undersea ecological balance.
11. What is this passage mainly about?
A. Sharks change their dieting habits. B. Coral reefs are left behind by sharks.
C. Sharks are faced with predatory threats. D. Coral reefs’ damage draws public attention.
D
For too long, we’ve been living on the edge of burnout, with to-do lists growing longer, calendars full, and deadlines that seem never-ending. It’s not a secret that busyness has been worn like a mark of honor, while moments of down time are seen as unproductive. But if there’s no time to breathe or room to think, how are we able to come up with new ideas, let alone carry them out?
I didn’t realize how deep-rooted this lifestyle had become for me until I stepped into self-employment in 2023. Balancing busy periods with quieter ones unexpectedly brought anxiety and self-judgment instead of the anticipated relief to pause and reflect. However, the tide is turning in the world of work: there’s a growing pushback against non-stop demands, and increased awareness about the benefits — including improved concentration, creativity and job satisfaction-of doing one thing at a time.
According to Marc Zao-Sanders, author of Timeboxing, multitasking is the attempt to attend to two things at once, for example firing off a few emails while sitting in a meeting. The pity here is that you may end up doing a poor job of both, and enjoy neither. But it’s actually a little more complex than this. If one of the tasks is familiar to you and doesn’t demand too much of you cognitively (认知地), it may well be that you can take on a second task at the same time. The main issue is thinking you can do both at once for those tasks where you can’t. This is both unproductive and can easily feel frustrated.
The phrase “multitasking” has been adopted by all sorts of typically high-achieving people and a mark of status. But our brains cannot complete tasks at the same time. They are completed in a sequence. Multitasking is tiring us out more quickly and making us less efficient. So, let’s bid farewell to the era of handling a hundred things at once.
12. What’s people’s common view to busyness?
A. It is a way to generate new ideas.
B. It shows that people are less productive.
C. It reflects people’s poor time-management.
D. It is a symbol of efficiency and excellence.
13. How does the author feel after she became self-employed?
A. Relaxed. B. Panicked. C. Uneasy. D. Stress-free.
14. What can we learn about multitasking from paragraph 3?
A. It can reduce our productivity. B. It can weaken our cognitive ability.
C. It makes us creative and concentrated. D. It is essential in today’s fast-pace world.
15. What does the author suggest in the passage?
A. Following high-achieving people. B. Working one task at a time.
C. Raising the efficiency of multitasking. D. Challenging our brain capacity.

You might feel like you’re walking on a tight rope all the time trying to be “good enough”. The feeling may play out as competence and hard work. ___16___ So, consider trying to be more aware of when you’re falling into that trap. Ahead, check out some of the signals.
Staying calm in a crisis. Those who are more used to the stress of anxiety tend to react to crisis and extreme stress more effectively because their brains are accustomed to these high-stress states. However, there is something to be mindful of. ___17___ For someone with high anxiety, they may not realize there is an issue until they are experiencing extreme reactions and even medical issues. The advice is to give yourself breaks.

James, a 34-year-old man, had faced many hardships in recent years. After losing his job during the pandemic, he struggled to make ends meet. Following the passing of his mother and an eviction (驱逐) from his apartment, James became homeless, spending his days working odd jobs and his nights in local shelters.
Despite these challenges, James maintained a positive outlook. He often volunteered at a nearby soup kitchen which was designed to provide food for the old and disabled, where he found comfort in helping others. Every day, he would rise with a sense of purpose, a rare quality that seemed to shine through even the darkest of times. James frequently shared his dream of one day having a home to call his own and getting back on his feet, inspiring others with his determination.
Recently, a local news station featured James in a column about homelessness in Seattle, sharing his inspiring story which moved the hearts of many viewers. They made contact with him, wanting to help him realize his dream of having a stable place to live in.
One day, a surprising twist unfolded. A local businesswoman, inspired by James’s perseverance, decided to pay for his first month’s rent and helped him land a job at her organization. But the ultimate surprise came during the rent signing. In an emotional moment, the businesswoman revealed that she had purchased a small house in a nearby neighborhood for James. Tears filled James’s eyes as he realized the power of the kindness returned to him. “I never expected such a thing could happen to me,” James said. But he turned down her offering politely and said: “I appreciate your generosity more than you can imagine, but I need to rebuild my life on my own. There are still many other homeless people needing your help.” Inspired by his words, she set up a non-profit organization in the small house.

C. The computing performance of electronic computers.
D. Achievements Shastri’s team makes in photonic computing.

【答案】12. D 13. C 14. A 15. B

【答案】范文
James was invited to take charge of it a few days later. With unwavering dedication, he transformed the small house into a community hub. His firsthand experience enabled him to design practical programs—job training workshops, counseling sessions, and temporary accommodation services. Every weekend, James organized donation drives, encouraging locals to contribute clothes and groceries. His compassionate leadership gradually attracted more volunteers. One afternoon, he noticed a familiar face among newcomers—a teenager he’d once shared sandwiches with at the shelter. “You taught me kindness isn’t about receiving,” the boy smiled, holding a box of supplies. James nodded, warmth swelling in his chest.
James’s efforts did not go unnoticed. Local newspapers featured his initiative, sparking citywide support. Within months, the organization expanded to three neighboring towns. The businesswoman proudly allocated funds for its growth while James secured stable housing through his salary. At the annual charity gala, he stood beside donors, now equals in rebuilding lives. Years later, the original small house displayed a plaque: “Where dignity begins.” James often lingered there, remembering how rejecting one gift had multiplied hope for countless others.
