The last time I visited my parents, I borrowed a novel from the shelves in my old bedroom. The books there once belonged to me, but over the decades, my father has taken over the space. It’s fitting.
I grew up in a house full of books, free to explore anything, as long as I returned it. But that’s harder now. My parents, in their 80s, still live in Manhattan, while I’m in Los Angeles. The book I grabbed was a novel by S. A. Cosby. At first, I was surprised my father knew of him, but why not? For as long as I can remember, he’s been a regular at his neighborhood bookstore. He used to say he wouldn’t mind aging as long as he could read. Even now, I often find him with a book, though I fear he’s begun to fall out of the narrative (叙述).
I didn’t read the book until I was back in Southern California. I didn’t want my father to know I had the book. I didn’t want him to feel any stress about it, though the two of us have been talking books ever since I was 12. I didn’t want to know what he might or might not recall.
Opening it felt like opening a conversation with my father, retracing his steps and reading through his eyes. I enjoyed the novel, though that’s beside the point. What struck me most was a plotline about feeling sad for one’s parents, a process I’m beginning to understand. When I finished, I ran my fingers over my father’s mark on the cover, those letters he’d pressed into the cover with a hand-held metal press, spelling out a name the same as mine. Then I slipped the book into my suitcase, certain to return it next time I visit.
24. Why is it fitting for the father to take over the author’s old space?
A. Because both are attached to reading.
B. Because the father loves collecting books.
C. Because the author’s books are preserved there.
D. Because the father needs space for bookshelves.
25. Why did the author not want his father to know he had the book?
A. To put the book into his own collection.
B. To avoid pressure on his father to discuss it.
C. To free his father from too much reading.
D. To maintain a sense of privacy in reading.
26. How did the author feel while reading Cosby’s novel?
A. Inspired by the plotline. B. Connected to his father.
C. Eager to share with others. D. Surprised at his father’s mark.
27. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Returning Home B. Love through Pages
C. The Power of Books D. My Father, a Great Reader
C
Cats perform better than human babies on a simple measure of language comprehension. The research, published Oct. 4 in the journal Scientific Reports, revealed that. Research in the past five years has shown that cats can recognize not only their own names but those of familiar humans and animals. But can they associate words and objects more generally?
To test this theory, Saho Takagi and her team gave 31 adult cats a simple word game used to investigate the same ability in human babies. The cats were shown two nine-second cartoon clips (电影片段) with recordings of their owners repeating a made-up word over each image. The two clips-a red sun labeled “paramo” and a blue unicorn with the word “keraru”-were repeated until the cats appeared to get bored and paid 50% less attention to the screen.
After a short break, the image clips were repeated, but this time, half of the pairings were switched. The switched clips visibly affected the cats, with recordings of “paramo” alongside the unicorn and “keraru” with the sun holding their interest an average of 15% longer. That the cats noticed this change and were clearly perplexed by it is good evidence that they had formed a link between the words and images, written in the study.
The experiment revealed that the cats were able to learn the combinations from just two nine-second exposures - significantly faster than babies, who required at least four 20-second trials.
However, these comparisons should not be overinterpreted. “You’re comparing an adult animal with an immature animal from a different species,” said Dr. Carlo Siracusa, an animal behaviorist at the University of Pennsylvania. “Moreover, a certain number of the cats have to be excluded, so there’s already a bias (偏见)-not a fault of the research. Interacting with cats in the experiment is no easy task.” he added. Despite its limitations, the study does show that cats are capable of forming picture-word associations, the team wrote in the paper, although whether this is an inborn ability or a product of domestication remains a mystery.
28. Why did Saho Takagi and her team carry out the experiment?
A. To test cats’ recognition of familiar names.
B. To explore cats’ word-object association ability.
C. To reveal cats’ secret of language understanding.
D. To compare cats’ memory with that of human babies.
29. What is presented in paragraph 2?
A. Data collection. B. Result analysis.
C. Practical examples. D. Experimental methods.
30. What does the underlined word “perplexed” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Attracted. B. Surprised.
C. Frightened. D. Confused.
31. What is one limitation of the study, as mentioned by Dr. Carlo Siracusa?
A. It’s difficult to engage cats.
B. There’re not enough clips involved.
C. The cats tested are chosen randomly.
D. Similarities between species are ignored.
D
There is a tendency among how-to enthusiasts to talk about creativity as if it had fixed goals: things you know from the start will turn out to be novels or symphonies (交响乐). Writers and musicians who have suffered many failures know this is an unlikely task. If they have to talk about it, they use “artistic vision” and leave it at that. However, experience tells me that creativity often lies to one side of a declared aim.
Some young writers are attracted by the idea that they can identify a model and knock out a thriller. Well, maybe so, but novels can take on countless shapes. The problem becomes clear when you start work creatively, because the need to believe in a fixed goal will hold you back.
Scientists call this need the set effect. It finds that a general tendency exists to favour known methods in problem-solving at the expense of alternatives. It is also a good way of describing what can happen when an artistic approach stops producing results. A few years ago, when I finished Murmur, a novel about Alan Turing, I knew I wouldn’t be working that way again. Nevertheless, I tried a second historical fiction. Failed. Meanwhile, I was playing the piano and composing on the side, which worked nicely.
So, the side-long view is important. The world of nature also offers similar cases. Insects and some birds rely less on an inbuilt map of the world to locate food than on what they see when they are moving. When a bee flies sideways, generating motion parallax (运动视差), a flower can be clearly located.
Perhaps artistic vision is a part of physical seeing, where looking from different angles is more important than staring straight at something. Creative projects and artistic vision come from our inborn response to the world around us. And since the world is always changing, so is our creativity — it’s never fixed or set in stone.
32. How do writers and musicians view creativity in the first paragraph?
A. It has uncertainties. B. It is hidden in failures.
C. It comes with a fixed goal. D. It is limited to specific fields.
33. What made the author fail in the creation of the fiction?
A. Influence of the set effect. B. Lacking historical knowledge.
C. Trying a new artistic approach. D. Distraction from playing the piano.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. Explanation of the set effect. B. Deep research into insect life.
C. Supporting evidence in nature. D. Doubts on insects’ inborn abilities.
35. What does the author suggest in the last paragraph?
A Staying flexible. B. Living to the fullest.
C. Keeping exploring. D. Holding on to your goal.

He wanted to help and be the same good friend like before, but it was hard.
Charley came back to middle school in the fall, but he had a tough time. Tad helped him get to class on time by pushing his wheelchair, but sometimes, Charley had to find someone else if Tad was at ball practice, or he would be late.

In Chengdu, a Canadian has become fascinated by the art of penjing, or Chinese bonsai. His name is Chad Sinclair. He’s 46 years old. He came to China 21 years ago to learn Chinese penjing. He fell in love with Chengdu and decided to stay here. Since then, he has been seeking inspiration from mountains, rocks, plants and trees to design his own penjing creations. From a young age, under the influence of his grandmother, Sinclair developed a strong interest in Chinese culture, especially the art of bonsai. In 1997 at the age of nineteen, Sinclair began to learn from Takayama, a world-class Japanese bonsai master. But he had always wanted to visit China, where the art originated. In Chengdu’s parks, Sinclair learned of Sichuan style penjing. As one of the five schools of Chinese penjing, Sichuan style penjing is a national intangible cultural heritage with elegant shapes. He hopes to combine his own style with the Sichuan style concept and introduce the Sichuan style penjing to the world. He took a lot of pictures and his friends who are outside of China reposted them. Today, Sinclair has become a somewhat famous penjing artist in Sichuan. He has also been selected as the Expo promotion ambassador for the International Horticultural Expo 2024 Chengdu.

A Returning Home B. Love through Pages
C. The Power of Books D. My Father, a Great Reader
A 25. B 26. B 27. B
根据第二段中“I grew up in a house full of books, free to explore anything, as long as I returned it. (我在一个充满书籍的房子里长大,可以自由探索任何书籍,只要我归还它们)”和“For as long as I can remember, he’s been a regular at his neighborhood bookstore. He used to say he wouldn’t mind aging as long as he could read. Even now, I often find him with a book, though I fear he’s begun to fall out of the narrative (叙述). (从我记事起,他就一直是附近书店的常客。他过去常说,只要还能阅读,他就不介意变老。即使现在,我经常看到他手里拿着一本书,尽管我担心他已经开始跟不上故事情节了)”可知,父亲接管作者的旧空间是合适的,因为两人都对阅读有着深厚的感情。故选A项。
根据第三段中“I didn’t want my father to know I had the book. I didn’t want him to feel any stress about it, though the two of us have been talking books ever since I was 12. I didn’t want to know what he might or might not recall. (我不想让父亲知道我拿了这本书。我不想让他因此感到任何压力,尽管我们俩从我12岁起就一直在讨论书籍。我也不想知道他可能记得或可能不记得的内容)”可知,作者这样做事希望避免让父亲感到需要讨论这本书的压力。故选B项。
【26题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中“Opening it felt like opening a conversation with my father, retracing his steps and reading through his eyes.
B 29. D 30. D 31. A
第一段提到“But can they associate words and objects more generally.(但它们能更普遍地将单词和物体联系起来吗?)”和第二段“To test this theory, Saho Takagi and her team gave 31 adult cats a simple word game used to investigate the same ability in human babies.(为了测试这一理论,Saho Takagi和她的团队让31只成年猫玩了一个简单的文字游戏,这个游戏用来调查人类婴儿是否具有同样的能力。)”
根据第二段“To test this theory, Saho Takagi and her team gave 31 adult cats a simple word game used to investigate the same ability in human babies. The cats were shown two nine-second cartoon clips (电影片段) with recordings of their owners repeating a made-up word over each image. The two clips-a red sun labeled “paramo” and a blue unicorn with the word “keraru”-were repeated until the cats appeared to get bored and paid 50% less attention to the screen.(为了测试这一理论,Saho Takagi和她的团队让31只成年猫玩了一个简单的文字游戏,这个游戏用来调查人类婴儿是否具有同样的能力。给猫看两段九秒钟的卡通片段,同时播放主人重复一个虚构单词的录音。这两段片段——一段是标有‘paramo’的红色太阳,另一段是标有‘keraru’的蓝色独角兽——重复播放,直到猫似乎感到厌烦,对屏幕的注意力减少了50%。)”可知,第二段主要介绍了实验方法,包括实验对象、实验过程和实验材料。故选D项。
【30题详解】
词义猜测题。根据第三段“The switched clips visibly affected the cats, with recordings of “paramo” alongside the unicorn and “keraru” with the sun holding their interest an average of 15% longer.(交换后的视频片段明显影响了猫, paramo的录音与独角兽一起播放,以及keraru的录音与太阳一起播放,平均吸引了它们15%更长时间的注意力)”以及“That the cats noticed this change and were clearly … by it is good evidence that they had formed a link between the words and images, written in the study.(研究报告中写道,猫注意到了这种变化,并且显然被它……,这是它们已经在单词和图像之间建立了联系的有力证据)”可知猫对交换后的片段明显有反应,兴趣平均延长了15%,可推测猫是对这种变化感到困惑,所以“perplexed”意思是“困惑的”,与“Confused”同义,故选D项。
Perhaps, artistic vision is a part of physical seeing, where looking from different angles is more important than staring straight at something.
A. Staying flexible. B. Living to the fullest.
C. Keeping exploring. D. Holding on to your goal.
A 33. A 34. C 35. A
根据第一段中“There is a tendency among how-to enthusiasts to talk about creativity as if it had fixed goals: things you know from the start will turn out to be novels or symphonies (交响乐). Writers and musicians who have suffered many failures know this is an unlikely task. (在那些热衷于“如何做”的人中,有一种倾向是谈论创造力,仿佛它有固定的目标:从一开始就知道会变成小说或交响乐的东西。经历过多次失败的作家和音乐家知道,这几乎是不可能的任务)”可知,作家和音乐家认识到创造力具有不确定性,不是从一开始就有固定目标的。故选A项。
根据第三段中“Scientists call this need the set effect. Failed. (科学家将这种需求称为定势效应。研究发现,人们在解决问题时普遍倾向于使用已知方法,而忽视了其他选择。这也是描述当一种艺术方法不再产生结果时会发生什么的一种好方式。几年前,当我完成了Murmur——一部关于艾伦·图灵的小说时,我知道我不会再以那种方式工作了。然而,我还是尝试了第二部历史小说,结果失败了)”可知,作者在创作小说时失败,是因为他试图重复之前的方式,受到了定势效应的影响。故选A项。
根据第四段“So, the side-long view is important. The world of nature also offers similar cases. Insects and some birds rely less on an inbuilt map of the world to locate food than on what they see when they are moving. When a bee flies sideways, generating motion parallax (运动视差), a flower can be clearly located. (因此,从侧面着眼很重要。自然界也提供了类似的例子。昆虫和一些鸟类在寻找食物时,较少依赖内置的世界地图,而是更多地依靠它们在移动时看到的东西。当蜜蜂侧飞时,产生运动视差,花朵的位置就能被清晰地确定)”可知,本段主要通过昆虫和鸟类的例子说明从侧面着眼的重要性,提供了自然界的支持证据。故选C项。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Perhaps, artistic vision is a part of physical seeing, where looking from different angles is more important than staring straight at something. Creative projects and artistic vision come from our inborn response to the world around us. And since the world is always changing, so is our creativity — it’s never fixed or set in stone. (或许,艺术愿景是物理视觉的一部分,从不同角度观察比直盯着某样东西更为重要。创意项目和艺术愿景源于我们对周围世界与生俱来的反应。既然世界总是在变化,我们的创造力也是如此——它从来不是固定不变的)”可知,作者认为创造力也应该是灵活的,需用从多角度出发,而不是固定不变的。由此可知,作者建议保持灵活。故选A项。
We all do it. We look at our mountain of work to be done and the feeling of fear settles in. Suddenly everything else you could be doing begins to look so much more appealing. What’s the deal? ____36____ But when facing a task that is challenging, we question our abilities and even ourselves. That’s where procrastination (拖延症) begins.
____37____. While these are good tools, they don’t show the whole picture of how to think about this all-too-common and frustrating phenomenon. We need to deal with the feelings hidden under the surface that both lead to procrastination and originate from it.
If we look at a task, say doing the dishes, we do an internal assessment and conclude that task won’t make us feel good. So what do we do? Anything other than that task. So what’s the solution here? Waiting until the problem is so bad that we have no choice? ____38____ What if instead, we begin to welcome the idea that unfulfilling tasks are also acceptable? In a world where instant pleasure and self-fulfillment are pushed on us, we forget that a large part of being human is just boring. And that is OK.
Compassion (同理心) can and should be invited in as well. When we begin to procrastinate, we know it and that can be it. ____39____ In fact, your worth as a human being does not disappear if dishes are left in the sink.
Procrastination can and will continue to happen because we live in a busy world where tasks will roll your way and you will need to deal with them as they come. When the lists and techniques for better organization fail, don’t be surprised. ____40____
A. Not exactly.
B. The problem’s urgency counts.
C. Simply put, we want to feel good.
D. Make a plan and stick to it to avoid procrastination.
E. We need not link this kind of act with self-judgment.
F. Just return to the root of the emotions and be kind to yourself.
G. Common reactions to it focus on making lists, setting times, etc.
C 37. G 38. A 39. E 40. F
根据上文“We look at our mountain of work to be done and the feeling of fear settles in. Suddenly, everything else you could be doing begins to look so much more appealing.(我们看着堆积如山的工作,恐惧的感觉油然而生。突然,你能做的其他所有事情看起来都更有吸引力了)”可知,人们在面对大量工作时,会感到害怕,进而选择做其他更吸引人的事情。由此可知,人们拖延是因为想做让自己感觉好的事情,与C项“Simply put, we want to feel good.(简单地说,我们想要感觉良好)”表达的含义一致,故选C项。
【37题详解】
根据下文“While these are good tools, they don’t show the whole picture of how to think about this all-too-common and frustrating phenomenon(虽然这些都是好工具,但它们并没有展示出如何思考这种常见且令人沮丧的现象的全貌)”可知,下文提到了“虽然这些都是好工具”,空白处提出了应对拖延症的一些常见的应对方法。这与G项“Common reactions to it focus on making lists, setting times, etc.(常见的应对办法是列清单、设定时间等)”表达的含义一致。故选G项。
根据上文“Waiting until the problem is so bad that we have no choice?(等到问题变得非常糟糕以至于我们别无选择吗?)”以及下文“What if instead, we begin to welcome the idea that unfulfilling tasks are also acceptable?(相反,如果我们开始接受那些不能让人满足的任务也是可以接受的这个想法呢?)”
根据上文“Compassion (同理心) can and should be invited in as well. When we begin to procrastinate, we know it and that can be it. (同理心也应该被邀请进来。当我们开始拖延时,我们知道这一点,这就够了)”可知,文章在强调自我同情的重要性,指出当人们开始拖延时,不必对自己过于苛责。这与E项“We need not link this kind of act with self-judgment.(我们不需要将这种行为与自我评判联系起来)”表达的意思一致。故选E项。
根据上文“When the lists and techniques for better organization fail, don’t be surprised. (当更好的组织的清单和技巧失败时,不要感到惊讶)”可知,文章在讨论当常见的应对拖延的方法失败时,人们应该怎么做。F项“Just return to the root of the emotions and be kind to yourself.(只需回到情感的根源,对自己友善一些)”表达的含义符合语境。故选F项。

The doctor said he had seriously broken his leg and would stay at hospital for several weeks. When Tad went to visit him in the hospital, Charley was in a low mood, unwilling to talk to others.

He wanted to help and be the same good friend like before, but it was hard.
Charley came back to middle school in the fall, but he had a tough time. Tad helped him get to class on time by pushing his wheelchair, but sometimes, Charley had to find someone else if Tad was at ball practice, or he would be late.
One day Charley dropped his book. As he tried to lean(倾斜) down and pick it up, he fell out of his wheelchair. Tad and one of his classmates helped him back into his chair. Charley wasn’t hurt, but he was so embarrassed that he didn’t speak to anyone the rest of the day. Another time, Charley tried to get through the gym door, but it closed on him.
