三、阅读理解
Cruises (海上航游) are becoming more and more popular among tourists. Around 20 million passengers now enjoy having holidays on cruise ships every year. More people consider travelling by cruise ships as the perfect way to have a good rest and relax themselves. But have you ever thought about the influence on the environment because of this trend (趋势)?
According to The Guardian, cruise ships cause lots of pollution both on the sea and on land. The biggest cruise ship can carry 6, 000 passengers. Moving such a large ship requires huge engines which burn as much as 300, 000 liters of fuel a day. It is reported that a cruise ship causes as much pollution as 1 million cars or 0.7 million buses going over the same distance. Sometimes, they even travel on the sea by burning dirty fuel that isn't allowed on land. People who care about the environment become very worried and think that with the development of cruise industry, more pollution will be produced on the sea. However, no government controlled the air pollution. Cruises also produce huge amounts of rubbish which usually cannot be recycled. Waste water from showers and toilets is usually poured into the sea. Waste food from restaurants isn't put into the sea. But it still causes problems when it is brought back to land.
Cruise ships also cause problems in the cities where they stop. Every day, some popular places can receive five or six ships which are full of thousands of tourists. Is it good for the business in local cities? Not really. Restaurant owners say that the visitors just walk around for a few hours and then return to their ships to eat. What’s more, the crowds make the streets too busy, which annoys local people very much.
Luckily, some cities have taken actions to solve these problems. They start to control the number of cruise ships that will stop at the port (港口). A few cities even don't allow cruise ships to enter.
21.How many people take trips by cruise ships every year?
A.More than 6, 000. B.Around 300, 000. C.Around 20, 000, 000. D.More than 1, 000, 000.
22.According to the passage, which of the following vehicles make the most pollution?
A.Cars. B.Cruise ships. C.Bikes. D.Buses.
23.Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A.Cruise ships cause a lot of air pollution.
B.Cruise ships’ waste water and food are put into the sea.
C.Every cruise ship needs to burn 300,000 liters of fuel a day.
D.Cruise ships are not controlled by the government.
24.Why aren’t the cruise ship passengers popular in some port cities?
A.Because they don’t spend money on meals. B.Because they fill up the restaurants and make noise.
C.Because they always say the city is too crowded. D.Because they are sometimes rude to other tourists.
25.What is the writer’s purpose of writing the passage?
A.To introduce a new way of travelling. B.To encourage people to try cruise ships.
C.To advise the government to stop cruise ships. D.To explain some problems that cruise ships cause.
Dear Sir or Madam,
Last Thursday, I traveled on the 8:00 a.m. train from Glasgow to London King's Cross and I was quite angry with the service of your company.
The train didn't come on time and it was forty minutes late when it left Glasgow. A man at the station said sorry to us, but he didn't give us any reasons for the delay(误点). We then had further delays on the way and had to wait another thirty minutes. As a result, I missed my plane from London to Frankfurt and had to wait for several hours.
What's more, the service on the train was also very poor. The trip took more than five hours. Unluckily, we could buy nothing but some soft drinks on the train. Worst of all, something was wrong with the air conditioning(空调系统) and it got hotter and hotter in the train. Before we reached King's Cross, the temperature was over 40℃.
Because of your poor service, I feel you should pay me compensation(赔偿).
I am looking forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
David Roberson
