Reshi completed a 12-page children’s book, Alice and Sparkle, with the help of a chatbot called ChatGPT. A chatbot is a computer program that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to imitate human thinking and writing. The book’s text was produced using it, and Reshi created illustrations (插图) using another AI program, Midjourney, which uses special computation (计算) rules to translate words into images.
When Reshi posted the book online, it became very popular with children. Some people praised Reshi for being clever. However, not everyone was happy. Some artists criticized the book. They said the pictures were of poor quality, and more importantly, the way the pictures were made was a big problem.
Midjourney works by searching through millions of images on the internet. It uses algorithms to find patterns in these images and make new ones. The problem is, Midjourney takes images from artists’ work without asking for permission.
Some companies have already started using AI instead of human workers. For example, an AI robot told jokes at a comedy club instead of a person. The San Francisco Ballet also used AI-created images for advertising a ballet show called The Nutcracker.
Many artists and writers are worried about their jobs. They fear that if AI can create art and writing for less money, people may not pay them for their work.
Josephine, a journalist who makes money from writing, says, “I love writing, but it’s troubling to see people looking for cheaper choices instead of supporting real human writers.”
There is a real concern about protecting the work of artists and writers who could have their creations used by AI programs. The technology industry that develops these tools should include artists in the process of making them.

B. To show the popularity of Reshi’s book Alice and Sparkle among children.

Uncle Vernon and Dudley came in the kitchen. Uncle Vernon opened his newspaper, and Dudley admired his own Smeltings stick.
Suddenly, they heard the sound of the mail slot (邮递投递口). Mail dropped onto the front door. Uncle Vernon ordered Harry to get the mail. Harry went to pick up the mail and found: a postcard from Uncle Vernon’s sister Marge, a bill and…a letter for Harry.
Harry picked it up in surprise. No one had ever written to him before. Who would? He had no friends or other relatives. But here it was, a letter for him, with just a simple address:
“Hurry up! What are you doing, checking for letter bombs (炸弹)?” Uncle Vernon laughed at his own joke.
Harry went back into the kitchen, still holding the letter. He handed Uncle Vernon the bill and the postcard. Uncle Vernon quickly opened the bill and then read the postcard.
“Marge’s ill,” he said, looking at the postcard. “Ate something strange.”
Just as Harry wanted to open the letter, Dudley suddenly shouted,
“Dad! Harry’s got something! ”
Uncle Vernon grabbed (抓) it from him.
“That’s mine! ” Harry said, trying to grab it back.
“Who’d be writing to you?” said Uncle Vernon, opening the letter and looking at it. His face went from red to green, then to white, like old porridge.
“Petunia!” Uncle Vernon shouted.
Dudley tried to grab the letter, but Uncle Vernon held it high. Aunt Petunia turned around and took the letter and read the first line. She looked like she might fall down.
“Vernon! Oh my god -Vernon!” she said.
They stared at each other, not noticing that Harry and Dudley were still in the room. Dudley wasn’t used to being ignored (忽略).
“I want to read that letter,” he said loudly.
“I want to read it,” Harry said angrily, “because it’s mine!”
“Get out, both of you! ” Uncle Vernon shouted. He grabbed Harry and Dudley by the necks and threw them into the hall, shutting the kitchen door behind them.

“The red walls and green tiles (瓦) set each other off beautifully. It’s so Beijing,” said a 33-year-old Beijing person with the family name of Lin. Lin and her 14-year-old cousin were enjoying a city walk along the Beijing Central Axis (中轴线). On this walk, they saw most of the old city buildings of Beijing, like the Forbidden City and the Bell and Drum Towers.
Since the show “Glory Is Back! Beijing (《登场了!北京中轴线》)” was shown in July, people like Lin traveled on foot to know the axis better themselves.
Dating back to the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368), the 7. 8-kilometer-long Beijing Central Axis starts with Yongdingmen Gate in the south and ends with the Bell and Drum Towers in the north. It matches Forbidden City and the markets at the Bell and Drum Towers area. This way of city planning is described as “court (宫廷) in the front, market in the back”. Other buildings like the Imperial Ancestral Temple (太庙) stands in the east and the Alter of Land and Grain (社稷坛) lies on the west side of the axis.
Chinese professor Lyu Zhou said that when he walked around the Bell and Drum Towers, he could find peace in the busy city life. At a square between the Bell Tower and the Drum Towers, you can see people relaxing, cycling and playing games and even celebrating life events.
“The towers were once our meeting places. We used to go on dates there. You could say that the towers have seen our love grow,” said a young couple who were taking wedding photos under the Bell and Drum Towers.
The traveler Marco Polo (1254-1324) wrote about what he saw along the Central Axis back in the Yuan Dynasty in The Travels of Marco Polo: “Up and down the city there are beautiful palaces... and fine houses in great numbers.” And Osvald Siren (1879-1966) from Sweden took many photos in Beijing back in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. These western records have given people around the world a taste of its history.
32. How does the writer lead in the topic in the first paragraph?
A. By asking questions. B. By giving an example.
C. By making comparisons. D. By listing numbers.

C. D.
35. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Marco Polo took many photos when visiting there.
B. These western records caused much trouble in the 19th century.
C. Osvald Siren was one of those western visitors.
D. More foreigners will be interested in the Beijing Central Axis.

—Do you know what holiday falls on November 19?
— World Toilet Day, of course!
①Have you thanked your toilet today? Maybe take a moment to thank this useful invention. Unfortunately, many people around the world do not have good toilets. World Toilet Day started in 2001 to draw attention to the problem. Since then, inventors around the world have been hard at work on designs for better toilets. The goal is clean toilets for all.
②Why do so many people live without good toilets? One problem is water shortage. Traditional toilets use water to flush (冲) the waste away. But lots of places don’t have enough water. And if there’s no sewer system (下水道) or water treatment plant, the flushes might go into rivers or onto fields. For almost half of the world’s population, flush toilets are just not practical. As a result, there are always different kinds of toilets that do not need to be flushed.
③Composting toilets might be a good choice. They do not need water, so they’re good for areas that are dry or don’t have sewer systems.
④Haiti’s EkoLakay toilets look like a normal toilet. When you use one, wastes fall into different containers. Some plant parts, like peanut shells or shredded sugar cane stalks are added instead of flush water. This stops smells efficiently.
⑤A pit toilet is the oldest and most basic toilet, which is just a hole in the ground, maybe with an out-house over it. This is simple, but not very clean. Germs (细菌) can escape into the air and get into water. But replacing the pit with a septic tank (化粪池) is a big improvement. Septic pits are lined with plastic or clay, to stop germs.
⑥Tiger toilets get help from an unexpected partner — a kind of worms (蠕虫) on the earth known as tiger worms. These worms love to eat the wastes. Under a tiger toilet is a box with a screen in the middle. Solid (固体) waste stays in the top of the box, where the worms live. Liquid (液体) flows through small holes into sewer systems. Tiger toilets are simple to build. They are recently being tested in India and are proving quite popular.
⑦Educational ways have also played an important role in changing public attitudes towards good toilets. Schools and community programs are teaching people about the importance of them, encouraging behavior changes.
⑧The road to achieving world-wide good toilets is still long. On this World Toilet Day, let us continue to thank the convenience of the wonderful invention. By doing research on more efficient toilet technologies and raising senses of keeping clean surroundings, we can work towards a future where every person has a clean and safe toilet.

37. What can we know about Haiti’s EkoLakay toilets?

D. They use a special kind of worms for wastes.
38. What’s the author’s attitude towards the future of good toilets?

Dear Jim,
I’m glad to hear from you. Let me tell you something about short videos in China.
As the name suggests, most short videos are short. It is easy to make. And it is possible to enjoy several videos in a short time. They always cover different contents like cooking, singing, travelling, or just the funny moments in life. It’s a good way to share life and spread knowledge. Through short videos, people can relax as well.
However, every coin has two sides. Some people are addicted to these videos and waste their time. They have poor eyesight by watching videos for a long time without relaxing. And some videos may mislead them in some way. So I think we should make good use of short videos. Never follow the trends blindly.

C. To discuss the advantages and challenges of AI in art and writing, especially on human creators.
D. To blame (责备) the poor quality of AI-generated illustrations in Reshi’s book.

B. They look like normal toilets but don’t use water to flush.
C. They are just all-holes in the ground with out-houses.
D. They use a special kind of worms for wastes.

“I know you’ve been thinking about this scooter a lot, Sophie. The sale price is pretty good. though it’s still a lot of money. I can’t just buy this for you. But what if I pay for part of it, then lend you the money for the rest, and you must pay me back?” her dad asked.
“Really?” Sophie said excitedly. “I promise I will pay you back!”
As they were walking towards the cashier desk (收银台), her dad asked Sophie if' she knew what it meant to borrow money.
“Yes, it means that I have to give it back to you,” Sophie answered:
Her dad replied “You’re right, but you can give it back to me a little at a time. Now you get five dollars a week for your pocket money and of course, you can get more if you do well in your exams or help with some housework, You could pay it back to me once a week until you pay off your part of the scooter. ”
