Della Steward got the standard well-wishes on her blog on her 53rd birthday, but she got some unusual messages too. One was about the Smith family who had just lost their four-year-old son to cancer. His older brother was in deep sorrow. Could Della help?
That message and the 30 or so others like it were exactly what Della was looking for. To celebrate her 53rd,the long-time social service professional had put out a call on her blog. She wanted to commit 53 random acts of kindness by the end of her birth month, and she needed information on people who could use one. When she got the note about the Smith family, she sent a wind chime(风铃)with the message “Listen to the wind and know that I am near” written on it. It now hangs in the four-year-old's bedroom, where his older brother can go to listen to it whenever he wants.
This is not the first time that Della has decided to give gifts for her birthday. For her 47th,in 2016,she founded Love in Action,an organization committed to doing something good near her home and beyond. Its aim is simple:Do Your Best,Show Your Love!
Over the years, the organization has reached out and touched well over 100 strangers, some found via Della's blog, others with help from her grandkids. The organization also shares inexpensive and creative gift ideas for others to help people in need.
Della pays for everything herself:gift cards,pay-it-forward purchases at drive-throughs,and care packages,as well as the gas it takes to play fairy. Her family often gives her some extra birthday cash with a serious warning against spending it on anyone else, which she naturally ignores. “I got a couple of gift cards for my birthday this year and was like ‘YESSS’!”It's Della's party, and she'll give if she wants to.

I'd say I quarrel with my parents a lot.Throughout high school,I was always jealous of some of my friends who didn't seem to have those problems at home, but I've come to see over the years that no one's situation is perfect.
Part of the reason I work all week during my break,in addition to the money,of course,is to be out of the house to avoid continuing quarrels. At work,I eat lunch with my friend Krysta every day,but the best days are when our favourite workmate,Lucy,is on her lunch break at the same time as us. Her funny way of storytelling always has us laughing happily, and although she is almost old enough to be our mom,she feels more like a best friend.
A few weeks ago, however, there was a change in our lunch conversation, and the story she told had us in real tears instead of our usual tears of laughter. A more serious topic had come up,and she sat us down to explain the importance of forgiveness, especially when it came to our parents. Telling stories of her troubled relationship with her mother, she changed my whole outlook on life and my feelings towards my parents. She reminded us that no matter how much resentment (怨恨) we're feeling in a moment of anger,we have to be thankful for the support they provide and learn to forgive everything else.
This week I've spent my break at home, having very small quarrels and lots of quality time together with my parents. Sometimes you need a reminder to make you realize how important it is to let go of past resentment and work to repair broken relationships. My workmate's moving stories not only brought me to tears in the break room at work that day but served as that wake-up call as well.

What are the hidden messages in the storybooks we read to our kids? That's a question that may occur to parents as their children dive into the new books that arrived over the holidays. And it's a question that inspired a team of researchers to set up a study.
For a taste of their findings, take a typical book in China:The Cat That Eats Letters. Seemingly it's about a cat that has an appetite for sloppy (马虎的) letters—“written too large or too small,or if the letter is missing a stroke (笔画),” explains one of the researchers, psychologist Cecilia Cheung,a professor at University of California Riverside.“So the only way children can stop their letters from being eaten is to write really carefully and practice every day.”
But the underlying point is clear:“This is really instilling (逐步培养) the idea of effort—that children have to learn to consistently practice in order to achieve a certain level,” says Cheung. And that idea, she says,is a core concept of Chinese culture. The book is one of dozens of storybooks from a list recommended by the education agencies of China, the United States and Mexico that Cheung and her collaborators (合作者) analyzed for the study.
They created a list of “learning-related” values and checked to see how often the books promoted them. The values included setting a goal to achieve something difficult, putting in a lot of effort to complete the task and generally viewing intelligence as a trait that can be acquired through hard work rather than a quality that you're born with.
The results—published in the Journal of Cross Cultural Psychology:The storybooks from China stress those values about twice as frequently as the books from the U.S. and Mexico.
根据第二段画线词所在句以及下文“So the only way children can stop their letters from being eaten is to write really carefully and practice every day.”
9.What does the underlined word “appetite” mean in Paragraph 2?
A.Skill. B.Desire.
C.Talent. D.Sense.
√
根据第三段中的“This is really instilling (逐步培养) the idea of effort...to achieve a certain level”可知,这本书是在灌输努力的理念——孩子们必须学会持续练习,才能达到一定的水平。
10.What is the implied message of The Cat That Eats Letters?
A.Helping children get rid of sloppy habits.
B.Developing children's writing skills.
C.Analyzing the focus of children's writing practice.
D.Encouraging children to keep practicing to achieve their goals.
√
11.What can we learn about “learning-related” values from the last two paragraphs?
A.They are stressed more in China.
B.They are often promoted by researchers.
C.They can be got without effort.
D.They are part of human intelligence.
√

Erin Alexander was having a hard day.A waitress working at Starbucks was too. Erin ordered an iced green tea and told the waitress to cheer up.After picking up the order, she noticed a message on the cup:“Erin, your soul is golden.” Erin Alexander recalled the incident,“Of course,I was still really sad,but that little thing made the rest of my day.”
New findings, published in the Journal of Experimental Psychology in August, prove just how powerful experiences like Erin's can be. Researchers found that people who perform a random act of kindness tend to underestimate how much the recipient will appreciate it.And they believe that miscalculation could hold many of us back from doing nice things for others more often.
A recent experiment recruited 84 participants at an ice skating rink in Chicago, where they were given a hot chocolate and asked to keep it or give it to a stranger as an act of kindness. The 75 participants who gave away their hot chocolate were asked to predict how the recipient would feel on a scale from 0(very small) to 10(very large),and the recipients were then asked to report their actual feelings on the same scales.
In that experiment, the people doing the kind thing consistently underestimated the appreciation they receive, according to Amit Kumar,a psychology professor at the University of Texas.“People tend to think that what they are giving is kind of little, maybe it's relatively inconsequential,” Dr. Kumar said.“But recipients are less likely to think along those lines. They consider the gesture to be significantly more meaningful because they are also thinking about the fact that someone did something nice for them.” Dr.Kumar continued,“With an experiment like this,I hope it will inspire more people to actually commit random acts of kindness.”
13.What's the function of Paragraph 1?
A.To present a fact.
B.To introduce the topic.
C.To describe a scene.
D.To explain an opinion.
√
根据最后一段中的“People tend to think that what...the fact that someone did something nice for them.”
14.What can we learn about the experiment?
A.All participants give away their hot chocolate.
B.Recipients received kind gestures from their friends.
C.Recipients showed more appreciation than givers think.
D.Participants reported their feelings on a scale from 0 to 10.
√
根据画线词前文“People tend to think that what they are giving is kind of little”和后文“But recipients are less likely to think along those lines...did something nice for them.”
15.What does the underlined word “inconsequential” in Paragraph 4 mean?
A.Insignificant. B.Substantial.
C.Beneficial. D.Unbelievable.
√
16.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Power of Small Acts of Kindness
B.The Magic of Receivers' Appreciation
C.The Importance of Appreciating Kindness
D.The Impact of a Simple Message on a Cup

_______________ That's why your sense of responsibility depends only on you. All of it depends on your own decision. Here are a few tips on how to improve your sense of responsibility.
D.You choose your own behavior, actions and words.
上文“However, you can hear...and bad.”提到我们会了解到许多不同的事情,好的、坏的都有,D项承接上文,是下文“your sense of responsibility depends only on you”的原因,因此D项符合语境。
________________________________ If you make a mistake, admit it. Instead of making excuses, give the true reason why you failed.By coming up with an excuse, you actually admit to being irresponsible.
B.Stop making excuses for yourself.
由下文“If you make a mistake, admit it.Instead of making excuses, give the true reason why you failed.”
Stop complaining.Complainers are usually those who talk too much and do nothing. By always complaining about the world around you,you actually fill yourself with negativity. ____________________________________________ Therefore, stop complaining!
C.By being negative, you are suffering terribly.
上文“By always complaining...negativity.”
Overcome postponement. The first step to success is to stop putting things off. Postponement will lead you nowhere. You're responsible for your own future,so stop delaying now and start taking action on what truly matters. __________________________________________________________
F.The hours you wasted could have been used for better things.
上文“You're responsible...what truly matters.”
上文“Having a routine is good.”
