A non-profit group in Greece, called Gentle Carousel Greece, uses small horses to provide pet therapy to sick and disabled people.
The horses are bred as miniature animals and stand about 72 centimeters tall. They are specially trained to provide comfort to disabled children, sick people, or older adults. During two years of training, the horses are taught how to work in confined environments with children and adults with special health needs. Caregivers say the horses provide a form of pet therapy that offers valuable social interactions and new learning experiences.
Gentle Carousel Greece is run by 68-year-old Mina Karagianni. She learned about the Florida-based organization over the Internet while she was searching for information on a pony she had rescued. After learning about the group’s activities, she got the idea to start her own operation.
So she made changes to her land to care for the horses. She turned her property into what she called a “Magic Garden.” She had everything she needed to care for the horses. She also ran a small restaurant and party area. Karagianni launched her Greek group in 2014. The organization has served about 12,000 children since it began.
The horses were recently brought to a school outside Athens for children with special needs. Nine-year-old Josifina Topa Mazuch seemed drawn to Ivy, a small gray horse standing no taller than her pink wheelchair. She ended up leading the animal down a school hallway. “They made me feel really happy, and I really want them to come again,” she said.
At the special needs school, teacher Eleni Volikaki said she saw “incredible” reactions from the children. “It seems that something awakens their senses.” Volikaki noted the horses could often get students to make more progress than with other therapy methods.
Although facing financial difficulties, Karagianni keeps going because she sees the great benefits the children and adults receive from the animals. She plans to seek help and inspire more people to get involved.
24. What is Gentle Carousel Greece intended to do?
A. Help people interact with the disabled.
B. Comfort people with special health needs.
C. Teach children how to look after horses.
D. Rescue animals in confined environments.
25. What do we know about the therapy horses?
A. They were rescued and bred by Karagianni.
B. They cater to the needs of different people.
C. They are larger in size than average horses.
D. They go through a series of special training.
26. What can we learn from Eleni Volikaki’s words?
A. The horses have a positive impact on the children.
B. More fund is expected to be raised for the disabled.
C. Pet therapy is as effective as other therapy methods.
D. More horses should be arranged to come to schools.
27. Which of the following best describes Karagianni?
A. Courageous and humble. B. Open-minded and humorous.
C. Energetic and demanding. D. Strong-willed and considerate.
B 25. D 26. A 27. D

根据第二段中“During two years of training, the horses are taught how to work in confined environments with children and adults with special health needs.(在两年的训练期间,这些马被教会如何在封闭环境中与有特殊健康需求的儿童和成人一起工作)”可知,这些治疗马会经过两年的训练,学习如何在封闭环境中与有特殊健康需求的儿童和成人一起工作,即它们会经历一系列的特殊训练。故选D。

The question of audience behavior during live performances has long troubled cultural institutions. Recently, this issue has emerged in the classical music world, focusing on mobile phone use at concerts.
The debate was sparked when tenor Ian Bostridge paused a performance in Birmingham, disturbed by audience members recording him. He later learned that he was out of line with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra’s (CBSO) policy, which allows photography and short video clips. Bostridge’s supporters flooded the orchestra with complaints about the policy. The CBSO’s management promised to clarify and refine but not withdraw it.
The CBSO is not alone in viewing mobile phones as potential assets in attracting younger, diverse audiences. The English National Opera encourages patrons to share photos of curtain calls, while other venues (举办地), like London’s Wigmore Hall and Royal Opera House, enforce strict no-recording policies. In contrast, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall adopts a flexible approach, consulting musicians for input on policies, except for classical concerts.
The problems for performers are clear — not only distraction, as in Bostridge’s case, but being caught on the blink, or on a bad day. But even so they are not all against the mobile phone. The violinist Esther Abrami, who has built large followings online, recently said that tagging felt like the modern equivalent of getting flowers after a performance.
On the audience side, the argument rests largely on the belief that phones are part of the lifestyle of young people, who are allowed to use them at other cultural events. In live comedy, however, there is a general understanding that it is in nobody’s interest for jokes to spread online before the end of a run.
While it is undesirable for classical concerts to become mere selfie sessions, where recording rights overshadow the experience of listening and watching, phones are not going away. The viral potential they offer is crucial for the marketing strategies of ambitious cultural venues. Finding limits based on general agreement is going to be part of their future.
28. What sparked the debate about mobile phone use at concerts?
A. The interruption of a performance.
B. A video clip of a concert.
C. Complaints from the audiences.
D. A policy clarified by CBSO.
29. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. All venues allow photography during performances.
B. Musicians have a say on how the policies are carried out.
C. The policies on mobile phone use vary in different venues.
D. How different venues attract younger, diverse audiences.
30. What is Esther Abrami’s attitude towards tagging on social media?
A. Indifferent. B. Favorable. C. Opposed. D. Doubtful.
31. What does the underlined word “overshadow” probably mean?
A. Highlight. B. Strengthen. C. Transform. D. Outweigh.

故选A。
根据第三段中“The CBSO is not alone in viewing mobile phones as potential assets in attracting younger, diverse audiences. The English National Opera encourages patrons to share photos of curtain calls, while other venues(举办地), like London’s Wigmore Hall and Royal Opera House, enforce strict no-recording policies. In contrast, Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall adopts a flexible approach, consulting musicians for input on policies, except for classical concerts.(CBSO并非唯一将手机视为吸引年轻、多元化观众潜在资源的机构。英国国家歌剧院鼓励观众分享谢幕时的照片,而其他场所,如伦敦的威格莫尔音乐厅和皇家歌剧院,则执行严格的禁止录制政策。相比之下,曼彻斯特的布里奇沃特音乐厅则采取灵活的方式,在制定政策时会征求音乐家的意见,但古典音乐会除外)”可知,本段主要讲述了不同场所在手机使用政策上的差异。故选C。
【30题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“The violinist Esther Abrami, who has built large followings online, recently said that tagging felt like the modern equivalent of getting flowers after a performance.(在网络上拥有大量粉丝的小提琴家埃丝特·阿布拉米最近表示,被标记(或收到标记)就像是现代版的演出后收到鲜花)”可知,小提琴家埃丝特·阿布拉米最近说,在社交媒体上标记(即被提及或分享)就像在演出结束后收到鲜花一样。
D
If you want to seem sincere and receive more responses to your texts, spell out words instead of abbreviating them, according to a new research published by the American Psychological Association.
Researchers conducted eight experiments with a total of more than 5,300 participants using various methods. Across the experiments, individuals who used texting abbreviations were perceived as more insincere and were less likely to receive replies because they were seen as putting less effort in text conversations. The research was published online in the Journal of Experimental Psychology.
“In daily interactions, we often encounter people who could be considered good texters or poor texters,” said lead researcher David Fang, a doctoral student at Stanford University. “We thought texters might like abbreviations because it would convey an informal sense of closeness, so we were surprised that abbreviations created negative perceptions about people who use them.”
Texting has become a dominant form of digital communication, and most texters use some abbreviations, such as IDK for “I don’t know” or GOAT for “greatest of all time”. In a preliminary survey by the researchers, 99% of respondents reported they used texting abbreviations, and 84% of them believed that others would like abbreviations. But people might not realize that abbreviations come with costs.
In the experiments, texters who used abbreviations received shorter and fewer responses and were less likely to receive contact information from the other texter. Texting abbreviations could contribute to loneliness if people find that social bonds weaken over time because they receive less frequent or positive replies to their texts, Fang said. But he doesn’t believe people should stop using abbreviations altogether.
“We often tailor the effort we put into conversations to match the significance of the relationship. In some cases, it makes sense to invest less effort and accept being perceived as less sincere, like quickly texting with a delivery driver,” Fang said. “However, our findings are especially relevant when we want to appear more sincere and strengthen social ties, such as at the beginning of a relationship or when we need to make a good impression.”
32. What was unexpected about the research results according to David Fang?
A. The research attracted over 5,300 participants.
B. People cared so much about how others texted.
C. The texters using abbreviations were considered insincere.
D. Abbreviations were considered to convey a sense of closeness.
33. How is a recipient likely to react to messages full of abbreviations?
A. Respond with shorter messages. B. Ignore the messages.
C. Spell out responses in full words. D. Stop using abbreviations.
34. Why is a delivery driver mentioned in the last paragraph?
A. To illustrate the fact that abbreviations are widely accepted.
B. To indicate abbreviations can be used in some interactions.
C. To emphasize the importance of sincerity in communication.
D. To explain the necessity to put more efforts into conversations.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Pros and Cons of Abbreviations in Texting. B. IDK is OK, Why Bother with “I Don’t Know”?
C. The Hidden Cost of Abbreviations in Texting. D. Shortcuts to Better Interpersonal Relationships.
C 33. A 34. B 35. C

根据第二段“Across the experiments, individuals who used texting abbreviations were perceived as more insincere and were less likely to receive replies because they were seen as putting less effort in text conversations. (在整个实验中,使用短信缩写的人被认为更不真诚,收到回复的可能性也更小,因为他们被认为在短信对话中投入的精力更少)”以及第三段“We thought texters might like abbreviations because it would convey an informal sense of closeness, so we were surprised that abbreviations created negative perceptions about people who use them. (我们以为发短信的人可能喜欢缩写,因为它能传达一种非正式的亲密感,所以我们很惊讶缩写会给使用它们的人带来负面印象)”可知,根据David Fang的研究结果,出乎意料的是使用缩写的短信者被认为不真诚。故选C。
【33题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“In the experiments, texters who used abbreviations received shorter and fewer responses and were less likely to receive contact information from the other texter. (在实验中,使用缩写的发短信者收到的回复更短、更少,也不太可能从另一个发短信者那里收到联系信息)”可知,收到全是缩写的信息,收件人可能会回复简短的信息。故选A。
根据最后一段“In some cases, it makes sense to invest less effort and accept being perceived as less sincere, like quickly texting with a delivery driver (在某些情况下,投入较少的精力,接受被认为不那么真诚的感觉是有意义的,比如快速地给快递员发短信)”可知,提到了快递员是为了表示在某些互动中可以使用缩写。
根据第四段“In a preliminary survey by the researchers, 99% of respondents reported they used texting abbreviations, and 84% of them believed that others would like abbreviations. But people might not realize that abbreviations come with costs.

前文“We all know the usual tips for shopping smart during the festive season— make a list, budget well, and haggle like your life depends on it.(我们都知道在节日期间明智购物的常用技巧——列一个清单,合理预算,像你的生活依赖于它一样讨价还价。)”提到了购物时的常用技巧,设空后文“If you really want to unlock shopping greatness this season, you need the secrets that most people haven’t even thought about.(如果你真的想在这个季节开启购物之旅,你需要知道大多数人都没有想过的秘诀。)” A“But those are just the basics(但这些只是最基本的)”为“But”转折句,“those”呼应前文内容,在句意方面可以引出后文。故选A项。
根据后文“They’ll feel pressured to match it or risk losing face.(他们会感到压力,要么匹配,要么冒着丢脸的风险。)”可推知,应是设空句提及的某种行为导致售货商出现了这种情况;同时结合空前“By the time it’s your turn, you’ll know the vendors’ limits and can negotiate better without the guesswork.(轮到你的时候,你会知道售货商的底线,并且可以更好地进行谈判,而无需猜测。)” D“You can casually mention you overheard the lower price(你可以随便说你无意中听到了更低的价格)”提到了该行为,可使前后衔接紧密。
根据段落内容“In big stores or markets, vendors often store discounted items at the back or in less visible corners. That’s where you’ll find those deals that others miss.(在大型商店或市场中,售货商经常将打折商品放在后面或不太显眼的角落。在那里,你会发现其他人错过的交易。)”可知,该段主要阐述了寻找角落里的打折商品。选项C“Check the ‘hidden corners’ for discounts(查看“隐藏角落”以获取折扣)”贴合该段主旨。故选C项。
根据前文“They just want to go home and might offer better deals to avoid hauling their goods back.(他们只是想回家,可能会提供更好的交易来避免把货物运回。)” F“This works best for perishable goods like vegetables, fruits, or even meat(这最适合蔬菜、水果甚至肉类等易腐货物)”提到了相关货物,同时句子中“This”呼应该段主旨。故选F项。
根据后文“Instead, pause, stare at them with a mix of disbelief and amusement, and wait for them to talk again.(相反,停下来,带着怀疑和娱乐的混合表情盯着他们,等他们再说话。)” E“When a vendor quotes a ridiculous price, don’t argue immediately(当售货商报价荒谬时,不要立即争辩)”提到的“售货商报价荒谬”符合分析,前后文衔接紧密。故选E项。

Twelve-year-old Oliver often felt like an invisible shadow among his talented peers at Willow Creek Middle School. Surrounded by friends good at sports, academics, and the arts, he often doubted his own worth, despite his mother’s encouraging words: “You’re special in your own way.”
One morning, Oliver noticed a flyer for the upcoming “Willow Creek Talent Show.” The categories included singing, dancing, drawing, magic, etc. Although Oliver loved singing in the shower, the thought of performing in front of others terrified him. His best friend, Jake, a soccer star, urged him to participate. “You never know what you might discover!” he said.
As the talent show approached, Oliver felt a mix of excitement and envy watching his friends prepare their acts. One day, while doodling (涂鸦) in class, his art teacher, Ms. Thompson, encouraged him to show his drawing talent. “You could create a live drawing while someone else performs!” she suggested.
Inspired by Ms. Thompson, Oliver began to draw more often, finding joy in every stroke of his pencil. One evening, he proudly showed his mother a drawing of their dog, Max. “You’ve captured his personality perfectly! You should really consider entering the talent show,” she exclaimed.
Oliver’s heart raced at the thought. “But what if I mess up? Or what if nobody likes it?” His mom smiled softly. “Remember what I always say? Everyone is special in their own way. You have nothing to lose by sharing your talent. Just be yourself, and you’ll shine.” With a determined nod, Oliver decided to enter the talent show. He would create a live drawing while Jake juggled (颠球), combining their talents into one performance.
Every day after school, Oliver met Jake in the park to practice their routine. With each passing day, he grew more confident, ready to embrace the spotlight and show his creativity.

The day of the talent show arrived. Oliver’s hands trembled as he stood backstage, his heart pounding like a drum. Jake, sensing his nervousness, patted him on the shoulder. “You got this, Oliver. Just focus on your drawing.” When their names were called, they walked onto the stage. The bright lights made Oliver’s eyes squint. At first, his hand shook slightly as he picked up the pencil. But as Jake started juggling, Oliver gradually got lost in his drawing. Stroke by stroke, a beautiful scene of Jake juggling emerged on the paper. The audience was amazed by their combined performance and burst into thunderous applause.
After winning the award, Oliver was no longer just a shadow. He held his head high, filled with a newfound sense of pride and confidence. His classmates, who had never noticed his artistic talent before, now gathered around him, asking for drawing tips. Teachers praised his creativity and courage. Oliver realized that he was truly special in his own way. He understood that everyone had unique gifts, and it was important to believe in oneself and have the courage to share those gifts. From then on, he no longer doubted his worth, and he was always ready to embrace new challenges, knowing that he could shine brightly in his own field.

So, she made changes to her land to care for the horses.
C
A. Highlight. B. Strengthen. C. Transform. D. Outweigh.
A Respond with shorter messages.
