Having spent numerous hours of her middle school days working on the SmartCane, a sensor-enabled walking assistance stick intended for people with vision problems, Riya Karumanchi made it and won multiple awards for it. Her inspiration for the cane was stimulated when she visited a friend’s house and spotted his blind grandmother struggling with her moving and sensing. She found herself feeling sympathy for her helplessness and bitterness.
Riya’s initial idea began with smart shoes, which would provide feedback in the form of vibration (震动) to guide the wearers to their destinations. However, if the shoes were to lose power, it would leave the users stuck where they were. “The reason why we chose to adopt the technology on the SmartCane was that if it failed to work, we wouldn’t be putting the user at risk,” said Riya.
Her next idea built upon the traditional white cane for the blind by adding an ultrasonic sensor that could detect barriers above the knee level. Vibration motors in the cane’s handle indicate barriers to the user. However, Riya didn’t want to stop there and added a panic button that would alert emergency services, as well as GPS navigation through haptic (触觉的) feedback. For example, the cane’s handle would vibrate twice for “turn right", and once for “turn left’.
Along the way to developing her full-featured design, Riya took advantage of every opportunity she had to get exposure for her design, to receive feedback on it and advance it. She first presented it at her school and regional science fair with her partner. She then took her design to a challenge to create a health-care product, where Riya joined a team of eight participants and set to work developing the SmartCane’s cutting-edge features.
“I met with many real-world challenges in the project. For example, people may not always like your idea. So you have to put in effort and time to improve it continually. I got a taste of real life. Now I’ve got used to presenting my ideas, talking to judges, answering questions, and managing my time between school and the SmartCane projects,” said Riya.
24. What set off Riya’s idea for the invention of SmartCane?
A. Her wish for a prize. B. The request from her friend.
C. The school assignment. D. Her pity for a visually disabled lady.
25. What is the problem with smart shoes?
A. Their power failure will trap users.
B. They can’t give real-time feedback.
C. They’re heavy and uncomfortable to wear.
D. Their sensors will lead users to wrong positions.
26. What quality of Riya is highlighted in paragraph 3 and 4?
A. Her generosity. B. Her innovative spirit.
C. Her cooperativeness. D. Her optimistic attitude.
27. How has the project affected Riya?
A. It has shifted her personality. B. She has acquired many skills.
C. She has experienced loneliness. D. It has solidified her belief in humanity.

As a renewable and clean energy source, wind energy is sharply rising in the United States. In 2020, turbines (风力涡轮) generated about 8 percent of the country’s electricity-more than 80 times the share of wind-generated electricity in 2000-according to the U.S. Energy Information Department. While the growth is a positive step toward curbing climate change, scientists say, it could be bad news for birds.
An estimated 140,000 to 500,000 birds die each year due to turbine crashes. Bird deaths could rise to 1.4 million per year if the U.S. Department of Energy achieves its goal of expanding wind energy to 20 percent of the country’s total electricity generation by 2030.
To prevent avoidable deaths, some scientists are supporting the use of citizen science data when deciding where to construct wind farms. Unlike traditional survey data, which cover limited time periods or locations, the citizen science data stretch over the entire United States and reflect the entire year. The wind energy industry could use such information to get a more all-round picture and minimize harm to birds.
Citizen science is already proving that it can fill vital information gaps. From 2007 to 2018, more than 180,000 birders uploaded observations about bald eagles to the eBird database. Using that treasure house of data, conservation scientist Viviana Ruiz-Gutierrez, of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, and his work fellows estimated where in the United States the birds would be most plentiful throughout the year and face the highest risk of crashing with wind turbines.
“Citizen science data should inform decisions about where to build wind turbines,” Viviana argues. “What we’re able to do is really drawing on the strength that only citizen science has.” The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has recommended using the team’s bald eagle maps to identify low-risk crash areas suitable for building wind turbines.
28. What does the underlined word “curbing” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Monitoring. B. Strengthening. C. Documenting. D. Tackling.
29. What advantage do citizen science data have over traditional survey data?
A. They’re more extensive. B. They’re less restricted in use.
C. They’re more easily available. D. They’re less expensive to collect.
30. In writing paragraph 4, the author aims to _______.
A. make a definition B. offer suggestions
C. illustrate with an example D. reach a conclusion
31. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Wind Turbines: Threats to Birds.
B. How to Decide Where to Build Wind Farms.
C. Wind Energy: America’s Major Electricity Source.
D. Citizen Science Contributes to Turbine-related Bird Safety.

Physical cash not only influences how much we spend but also facilitates an intense sense of psychological ownership that digital payments don’t have, according to new research.
The study suggests as cash disappears from our wallets, so too does our awareness of spending, leading to unthinking and unnecessary buying. Maintaining a physical element in our payment systems may be vital for promoting responsible spending behaviors. Dr Jashim Khan, lead-author of the study said, “The nature of cash — its smell, feel and the act of counting it — creates an emotional connection that digital payments lack. When handling cash, we aren’t just spending money; we’re parting with a piece of ourselves.”
The research team conducted their study in two distinct cultures, New Zealand and China, using focus groups and open-ended questionnaires to gather rich, detailed data about consumer experiences with cash and cashless payment methods. Participants were asked to describe their feelings and behaviors surrounding the use of different payment modes.
They found that cash promotes heightened awareness of spending, while cards and apps often lead to a disconnection from the money being spent. While 50% of transactions in China are made through app-based payments, participants expressed a lessened sense of ownership over their funds. Plus, happy and secure as people feel using third-party payment apps, they at times struggle with a sense of loss when parting with cash.
In contrast, the ease of digital payments often results in mindless spending, as the credibility of cash is replaced by abstract numbers on a screen.
The research shows cash. isn’t just money — it’s a way to stay connected to what we spend. Holding cash in our hands reminds us of its value, something that digital payments can make easy to forget. Moving to a cashless society means we need to understand how different payment choices affect us, not just financially but emotionally. Keeping this in mind enables us to make better decisions concerning money in a world where money often feels invisible.
32. What is paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The emotional weight of cash. B. The popularity of digital payments.
C. The reasons for currency exchange. D. The consequences of overconsumption.
33. How did the researchers get the outcome of their study?
A. By interviewing high-income groups.
B. By studying existing theories on money.
C. By summarizing replies from respondents.
D. By observing consumers’ behaviors firsthand.
34. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. People should use money wisely.
B. Money makes the world go round.
C. Cash is inconvenient and outdated.
D. Cash payment is safer than digital payments.
35. In which publication is the text most likely to appear?
A. Motor Trend, B. Science Daily.
C. Art and Design. D. Muscle and Fitness.

Kids in a Michigan neighborhood turned the 2024 Halloween from a simple night of trick-or-treating into an unforgettable display of kindness for a young boy in hospital.
Jacob, a bright-eyed and energetic boy, had great memories of the Halloween night. The air was clear and cool, filled with the smell of autumn leaves and the distant sound of laughter. As the Halloween night settled over the neighborhood, the streets were brightened with the warm, shining light of pumpkin (南瓜) lanterns. Wearing a variety of colorful costumes, the children, dressed up as supermen, ghosts, batmen, spider men or princesses, wandered in the streets excitedly. Carrying their big candy bags from house to house, they knocked at every neighboring door, shouting “Trick or Treat”, and the house owners who answered the door would hand them candies smilingly.
Before Halloween, Jacob had been looking forward to its coming in a splendid way. He had particularly planned his costume and couldn't wait to fill his candy bag. But things didn't go as planned. Just two days before the big night, Jacob was struck with a severe illness that landed him in the hospital. He received a medical operation and it was clear that there would be no trick-or-treating for him this year.
The hospital room Jacob stayed in was decorated with get-well cards, flowers and balloons from his friends and relatives. Jacob lay in bed with a pale face, weak and sad. Seeing Jacob's condition, the single mother Amy was heartbroken. She knew how much Halloween meant to her son, and she couldn't bear the thought of him missing out on the fun. Meanwhile, she knew kids who knocked at their door would be disappointed if there was no answer to the doorbell without a reason. She thought about it over and over again and finally an idea occurred to her: A visual camera (可视化摄像头) connected to her cellphone, a note, and a basket full of candies would work.
注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;
(2)请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Amy returned home and took immediate action.

【原文】Is it hot enough out there? It’s Manny, Miami’s weatherman, back with a Channel 5 weather update. I have good and bad news for my lovely viewers, and both are that this hot and sunny weather isn’t going anywhere until autumn. From now, in mid-August, until the end of September, expect nothing but warm sunshine. Great news for my beach lovers but difficult news for anyone stuck in an office. So, turn on that air conditioning or get some sun screen because this weather is here to stay. If you look at this weather map, you can see the warm pressure keeping the rain away for the near future. Plus, with temperatures rising above 40 degrees, we can expect winds to calm as well. I’m sorry, Miamians — I wish there was calmer weather for you. But instead, here’s some inspiration. The weather is hot, but the beaches are on fire! For the rest of the summer, there will be volleyball, swimming, barbecue and live music on the beaches. If you’re like me, some fun in the sun will help you enjoy this hot weather! That’s all from me; stay here with Bill for sports and then Lily with local news. Stay happy, Miami!

【答案】28. D 29. A 30. C 31. D

【答案】32. A 33. C 34. A 35. B

故填which。
故填was set。

注意:
(1)续写词数应为150个左右;

_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version
Amy returned home and took immediate action. She had a camera fixed above the door, on which she taped a note reading, “Dear trick-or-treaters, Jacob is in hospital but he still wants to spend the Halloween with you. Please take candies from the basket and smile at the camera. He’ll be looking at you.” Having placed the candy basket outside, she hurried back to the hospital. As the excited and noisy kids in different costumes came and read the note, they suddenly fell silent. One by one they took a candy and expressed their best wishes at the camera with big smiles. Now it was the turn of a “superman”.
The “superman” put all his candies into the basket instead of taking one from it. He waved at the camera, saying “Jacob, I know you like candies. Hope you’ll recover soon.” Inspired by his act, other children followed suit and started pouring their candies into the basket, which soon turned into a mountain of colorful candies. Viewing what the kids were doing in front of the cellphone screen, Amy and Jacob were deeply touched. The great love and kindness from his playmates left Jacob’s face lit up with a huge smile. The unique heartwarming Halloween will stick in the memories of both Jacob and his playmates.
