“We need to deal with the enemy superman courage, and to adhere to a friend in front of their position, but also a great deal of courage.” Dumbledore said in Harry Potter.
The magical world of Harry Potter has fascinated and engaged all ages for over two decades. With seven books and eight movies, this series has brought in over $24 billion in income worldwide. Besides the amusing characters and creative plot lines, the Harry Potter series has taught strong life lessons that apply to Muggles (麻瓜).
Take a look at a few of the life lessons from the magical world.
People are complicated. Fairy tales teach children that the world is only split into good and bad people. The Harry Potter series however, gives characters a lasting gift by giving them personalities in many aspects and changeable characteristics. Harry is loyal, brave, kind yet has moments of selfish impulsivity and hot-temperedness. Ron, for all his likeable everyman qualities has, as Hermione puts it, “the emotional range of a teaspoon.” Even Hermione’s fierce intelligence can occasionally seem bossy and overpowering. If learning that no one is perfect isn’t a good life lesson for young people, then what is?
True friendship is invaluable. Harry, Ron, and Hermione are arguably the most famous friends in literary history. Throughout the novels, their friendship is tested but always survives, stronger than ever. Yet through it all we learn the most important lesson: don’t take your friends for granted because they will be there through anything life throws at you.
Other important life lessons we can learn from the Harry Potter series are: Bravery comes in many forms. Competence is worth more than reputation. Virtue isn’t determined by abilities, but by choices. Always treat those below you with kindness.
4. Why does the author present the quote in the first paragraph?
A. To present the topic. B. To share an opinion.
C. To state a fact. D. To introduce the background.
5. What has made the Harry Potter series so successful?
A. The seven books and eight movies. B. The creative plot lines and the life lessons.
C. The fact that it is a fairy tale. D. The income that it brought in.
6. How does the Harry Potter series describe people compared to fairy tales?
A. It only shows good people. B. It only shows bad people.
C. It shows people are either good or bad. D. It shows multi-sided people.
7. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Friends should be used whenever needed.
B. Appearance is the most important one.
C. Bravery exists in diverse forms.
D. Virtue is up to abilities.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. D 7. C

Listening to music after surgery seems to ease a patient’s pain and anxiety, which could be a cheap and easy way to reduce painkiller (止痛药) use.
“Many people, when they are awakening from anesthesia (麻醉), are lost,” says Eldo Frezza at California Northstate University College of Medicine. “They have anxiety or maybe they feel pain of the surgery.” Research has repeatedly shown that music can be calming, which encouraged Frezza and his colleagues to investigate if it may help after an operation.
The team analyzed the results of 35 studies that explored how listening to music immediately after surgery affected people’s pain, anxiety, heart rate and painkiller use.
Each study involved about 100 people, half of whom were asked to listen to music, of different genres, after abdominal (腹部的) or bone-related surgery. The studies varied in how long the participants did this, ranging from half an hour to until they were discharged. The other participants who were matched to the former group for age, sex and surgery type didn’t listen to music after their procedures.
After comparing, Frezza’s team found that music seemed to reduce pain levels by about 20 percent, on average. Those who listened to music also required less than half as much morphine while in hospital as those who did not.
The team also found that listening to music seems to reduce anxiety. It lowered heart rates by around 4.5 beats per minute, on average, and reduced self-reported anxiety levels by about 2.5 points.
“A 2.5-point reduction is pretty small, but it’s moving in the direction we want it to go,” says Annie Heiderscheit at Anglia Ruskin University in Cambridge, UK. “Music diverts our attention from pain by boosting levels of a signaling molecule called serotonin (血清素) that passes between brain cells and makes us feel good.” she adds.
“Future research should include large studies. This would give a more reliable result than combining the results of previous small studies.” Eldo Frezza says.
8. What inspired Frezza and his team to study the effect of music after surgery?
A. The high cost of painkillers. B. The lack of effective post-operative treatments.
C. The patients’ strong requests. D. The previous research on music’s calming effect.
9. How did Frezza’s team find that music after surgery seemed to reduce pain and anxiety?
A. By listing data. B. By giving examples. C. By doing surveys. D. By making comparisons.
10. What does the underlined word “diverts” mean?
A. Transfers. B. Increases. C. Sharpens. D. Attracts.
11. What does Frezza suggest about future research?
A. Stopping doing research. B. Carrying out large-scale studies.
C. Interviewing the study participants. D. Focusing on different types of music.
【答案】8. D 9. D 10. A 11. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了音乐能够缓解术后患者的疼痛与焦虑,专家通过一系列实验验证了这一观点,以及对后续研究的展望。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Research has repeatedly shown that music can be calming, which encouraged Frezza and his colleagues to investigate if it may help after an operation.(研究一再表明,音乐可以让人平静下来,这鼓励了弗雷扎和他的同事们去研究音乐是否可以在手术后帮助患者)”可知,之前关于音乐有镇静作用的研究激励了Frezza和他的团队去研究手术后音乐对患者的作用。A选项“止痛药的高成本”文章未提及;B选项“缺乏有效的术后治疗”不是他们研究的灵感来源;C选项“病人的强烈要求”在文中没有体现。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第五段“After comparing, Frezza’s team found that music seemed to reduce pain levels by about 20 percent, on average. Those who listened to music also required less than half as much morphine while in hospital as those who did not.(经过比较,Frezza的团队发现,音乐似乎将疼痛水平平均降低了约20%。听音乐的人在住院期间所需的吗也比不听音乐的人少了一半以上)”可推知,通过比较,Frezza的研究小组发现,手术后听音乐似乎可以减轻疼痛和焦虑。故选D项。
【10题详解】
词句猜测题。根据文中“Music diverts our attention from pain by boosting levels of a signaling molecule called serotonin that passes between brain cells and makes us feel good.(音乐通过提高一种叫做血清素的信号分子的水平来diverts我们对疼痛的注意力,这种分子在脑细胞之间传递,让我们良好)”可知,音乐通过提高一种叫作血清素的信号分子的水平,让“我”们感觉良好,这种做法其实是转移了我们注意力。由此可知,是提高做血清素的信号分子的水平来将“我”们的注意力从疼痛中转移出来。划线词“diverts”意为“转移”。而 B 选项“增加”;C 选项“加强”;D 选项“吸引”均不符合语境。故选A项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章最后一段“Future research should include large studies. This would give a more reliable result than combining the results of previous small studies.(未来的研究应包括大型研究。这将比结合以前的小型研究结果更可靠)”可知, Frezza建议未来的研究应该包括进行大型研究,这样会比结合之前小规模研究的结果更可靠。故选B项。

The electric vehicle (EV) revolution is in full swing, with significant effects on various aspects of society and the economy.
Advancements in battery technology have been a game-changer. Contemporary EV batteries, such as the latest iterations of lithium-ion batteries, showcase improved energy density, permitting vehicles to travel further on a single charge. For example, leading EV models can now achieve ranges comparable to those of traditional gasoline vehicles under certain conditions.
At the same time, the expansion of the charging facility is underway. Governments and private companies around the world are investing in the installation of charging stations, not only in urban areas but also along highways. This relieves the range anxiety that was once a major presenter for potential EV buyers. In response, major automakers are ramping up production and introducing new models at a rapid pace. This has led to a wider range of choices for consumers. For example, some companies are now offering electric SUVs with long driving ranges and advanced safety features, catering to the needs of families.
While challenges remain, the production of EV batteries requires the extraction (提取) of rare earth metals, which can have environmental and geopolitical consequences. Moreover, the recycling of these batteries is still a developing field, and proper disposal methods need to be further refined to minimize waste. The last concern is the impact on the power grid (电网). The rising electricity demand for EV charging may stress the grid, especially at peak times. Companies are working on solutions such as demand response programs and the development of smart grids to manage the load more efficiently.
The EV revolution is a complex journey filled with both opportunities and obstacles. The path forward requires continued innovation, collaboration between industries and governments, and a concerted effort to address the environmental, economic, and technological challenges.
12. What has enabled EV to travel longer distances?
A. Enhanced battery energy. B. Larger vehicle size.

In order to enable us to get close to nature and understand the value of labor, a planting activity was held in the backyard of our school last month.
Under the guidance of an experienced gardener, we planted tomatoes. At first, we carefully selected the seeds and dug holes. Then we placed the seeds in and covered them with soil. After that, we watered them regularly and watched them grow with anticipation.

In the heart of Boston, stood a high school named Milton Academy. It was a place where dreams took flight and friendships blossomed, but more importantly, it was where a student’s optimism sparked a transformation throughout the entire school community.
Emily Parker was a freshman at Milton Academy, known for her bright smile and optimism. Her hair, a cascade of auburn curls, always seemed to bounce with an infectious energy. Emily’s classmates often admired her ability to see the bright side of every situation, even when faced with adversity (逆境).
One autumn morning, the school announced a surprise project: a school-wide talent show, to be held in just two weeks. The news spread like wildfire, lighting a mix of excitement and fear among the students. Many were eager to showcase their talents, while others, like Mark Thompson, a shy and introverted boy, felt a wave of anxiety rising in their stomachs.
Mark’s artistic talent was widely recognized, yet his shyness prevented him from displaying his works to the public. He often spent his lunch breaks sketching (素描) in the art room, far away from the noisy cafeteria and the stares of his peers. Emily, always on the lookout for opportunities to spread joy, noticed Mark’s loneliness and decided to approach him.
“Hey, Mark, I heard about the talent show,” Emily said, her eyes twinkling with excitement. “You should definitely participate! Your drawings are amazing, and everyone would love to see them.”
Mark shook his head, his cheeks turning a shade of crimson (猩红色). “I don’t think so. Emily, I’m too nervous. What if no one likes them?”

【答案】 But Emily continued to encourage him. Emily’s smile remained steadfast. “Mark, art is sharing your heart. One appreciator makes it worth it. I’ll cheer you on.” she said. Reluctantly, Mark agreed. Emily’s optimism influenced him, reducing his fears. She helped him prepare, urging him to embrace his talent. On the talent show day, the auditorium buzzed with excitement. Various talents were displayed. When Mark’s name was called, Mark, with courage in his heart, stepped onto the stage. His heartbeat pounded, but his steps were firm.
His hands trembled as he walked to the front of the stage, holding his best drawings. During his painting presentation, the audience were captivated by its emotional depth and detailed work. They applauded enthusiastically, recognizing Mark’s talent. Mark’s face beamed with a long-absent smile, feeling confident and accomplished. He noticed Emily in the crowd, applauding proudly. This marked a turning point for Mark, as he realized he had overcome his fears and found his own stage.

The Harry Potter series, however, gives characters a lasting gift by giving them personalities in many aspects and changeable characteristics.
8 What inspired Frezza and his team to study the effect of music after surgery?
A. The high cost of painkillers. B. The lack of effective post-operative treatments.
C. The patients’ strong requests. D. The previous research on music’s calming effect.
9. How did Frezza’s team find that music after surgery seemed to reduce pain and anxiety?
A. By listing data. B. By giving examples. C. By doing surveys. D. By making comparisons.
10. What does the underlined word “diverts” mean?
A. Transfers. B. Increases. C. Sharpens. D. Attracts.
11. What does Frezza suggest about future research?
A. Stopping doing research. B. Carrying out large-scale studies.
C. Interviewing the study participants. D. Focusing on different types of music.

___16___ It means saying no to unnecessary things. For example, refusing single-use plastics like straws and plastic bags. This prevents them from ending up in landfills or oceans. This helps cut down on waste from the very beginning.
Reduce focuses on minimizing consumption. We can reduce our energy usage by turning off lights and unplugging electronic s when not in use. ___17___ Buying only what we need and avoiding over-purchasing also falls under this category.
Reuse is about finding new ways to use items. Old jars can be used to store food or as vases. ___18___ Clothing can be passed on to others or transformed into something new like a quilt.
Recycle involves processing materials so they can be made into new products. Paper, plastic bottles, and aluminum cans are commonly recycled. ___19___ However, it’s important to note that recycling should be the last resort after reducing and reusing.
Rot refers to composting organic waste. Kitchen scraps like fruit peels and vegetable trimmings can be composted. ___20___ The compost can then be used to fertilize gardens, enriching the soil.
By following the 5Rs, we can all contribute to a more sustainable future.
