Passengers of a superyacht (豪华游艇) caused a large wildfire on the charming beach of Saint Nicholas on the Greek island of Hydra in the late hours of June 21.
The individuals who were near the beach of the beautiful Greek island were seen by people on land throwing fireworks from their ship at around 10:45 pm local time. This seemingly innocent and fun activity, however, ended up setting the surrounding forest area on fire.
According to Fire Service authorities from the island, the fire began burning in a particularly difficult-to-access location of Hydra with no road infrastructure (基础设施).
Luckily, the centre of the incident was far from any urban settlements and villages. Firefighters approached the site using Coast Guard ships in an attempt to put out the fire from the sea. Many volunteer firefighters also joined the effort to contain the large flames and prevent them from spreading further inland. This could have had destructive consequences for the beautiful Greek island of Hydra.
Late on June 22, the Greek Fire Service announced that a total of thirteen people had been arrested, accused of causing a wildfire in the forested area on the island of Hydra. The individuals are expected to be on trial. The island of Hydra belongs administratively to Piraeus, a port city in the region of Attica to which Athens belongs.
Greek media reported that all those arrested were crew members of the superyacht. It is available for summer charter(包租)at €249,000 per week, according to several superyacht dealers online.
“We are indignant that some people so irresponsibly throw fireworks into a pine forest,” Hydra’s mayor, Giorgos Koukoudakis, told Greek broadcaster ERT. There was also criticism on social media, “Rich people with more money than brains,” wrote one person.
4. Why was it difficult for the firefighters to get close to the fire?
A. The fire was too fierce.
B. The fire broke out late at night.
C. Coast Guard vessels weren’t available.
D. The road to the site didn’t exist at all.
5. What does the underlined word “indignant” probably mean in the last paragraph?
A. Cross. B. Indifferent. C. Embarrassed. D. Impatient.
6. What can we learn from the passage?
A. Piraeus is an inland city in Attica.
B. Passengers of the yacht were all arrested.
C. Wealthy people are not necessarily socially responsible.
D. Throwing fireworks around is an innocent and fun activity.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text?
A. To inform an accident. B. To call for actions to take.
C. To give some advice to follow. D. To persuade to believe the truth.

A Northwestern University-led team of researchers has developed a new fuel cell that harvests energy from microbes (微生物) living in dirt. About the size of a standard paperback book, the soil-powered technology could fuel underground sensors used in modern agriculture and green infrastructure. This could potentially offer a sustainable, renewable alternative to batteries that release harmful chemicals into the ground.
To test the new fuel cell, the researchers used it to power sensors measuring soil condition and detecting touch, a capability that could be valuable for tracking passing animals. To enable wireless communications, the researchers also equipped the soil-powered sensor with a tiny antenna to transmit (传输) data to a neighboring base station by reflecting existing radio frequency signals. Not only did the fuel cell work in both wet and dry conditions, but its power also outlasted similar technologies by 120%.
The research was published on Jan. 12 in the Proceedings of the ACM on Interactive, Mobile, Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies.
“The number of electronic devices used in modern agriculture as a way to improve crop productions is constantly growing,” said Northwestern’s Bill Yen, who led the work. “If we imagine a future with numerous devices like these, we cannot build every one of them out of lithium (锂) and heavy metals that are dangerous to the environment. We need to find alternatives that can provide low amounts of energy to power a widespread network of devices.”
In a search for solutions, the researchers turned to soil microbial fuel cells(MFC), which use special microbes to break down soil and generate a low amount of energy to power sensors. As long as there is organic carbon in the soil for the microbes to break down, the fuel cell can potentially last forever.
“These microbes are common; they already live in soil everywhere,” said Northwestern’s George Wells, a senior author of the study. “We can use very simple engineered systems to collect their electricity. We’re not going to power entire cities with this energy, but we can collect tiny amounts of energy to fuel practical, low-power applications.”
The researchers plan to develop a soil-based MFC made from fully biodegradable (生物可降解的) materials as their next step.
8. What can we know from the new fuel cell?
A. It was not limited by soil conditions.
B. The power it produced increased by 20%.
C. It was made from fully biodegradable materials.
D. It will completely replace conventional batteries soon.
9. What can we infer from Bill Yen’s words in paragraph 4?
A. Electronic devices are widely used in industries.
B. It is essential for our environment to develop the new fuel cell.
C. Lithium and heavy metals are dangerous to the environment.
D. Current electronic devices can’t provide large amounts of energy.
10. What is George Wells’ attitude toward the fuel cell?
A. Doubtful. B. Dismissive. C. Pessimistic. D. Approving.
11. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. Conventional Batteries Are Giving Way to New Fuel Cell.
B. Microbes Can Break Down Soil and Generate Energy.
C. New Fuel Cell Harvests Energy from Microbes in Soil.
D. New Fuel Cell Fuels Underground Sensors in Agriculture.

Who do you hold in higher regard: Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple, who said he wakes up at 4 am. and is the last to leave the office, or UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer who said he won’t work past 6 pm on Fridays? Time magazine reported that the answer seems obvious in the US where business and a lack of leisure time have become symbols of high status.
Historically, long work hours weren’t associated with wealth or status. In the Roman Empire, the rich divided their day between business and leisure, with business only conducted in the morning. In his 1899 book The Theory of the Leisure Class (《有闲阶级论》), US economist Thorstein Veblen wrote that “obvious lack of labor becomes the conventional mark of superior achievement.” In other words, the wealthier one was, the less one worked.
Today, however, reality contradicts Veblen’s theory. Researchers at the Washington Center for Equitable Growth found that those who work more than 40 to 45 hours a week are usually in “highly paid professional positions”, such as lawyers, architects and engineers. But regardless of the profession, a culture of overwork thrives in the US as long hours have become a marker of career success. As Time magazine noted, one reason behind this dramatic shift is “the rise of knowledge-intensive economies”. On the supply side, workers focus heavily on education and skill development, believing their knowledge and skills are most valuable. On the demand side, companies and organizations compete to attract top talent. Essentially, long work hours imply that an individual is in high demand.
Rising economic inequality and financial insecurity are also key factors. As the job market grows more competitive, even those near the top of the income ladder feel financially insecure. Study shows that the professions with the largest income gaps are also the ones where people are most likely to work more than 40 hours a week. This indicates that highly paid professionals are more willing to accept a busy schedule because, if they don’t, there are plenty of lower-paid workers ready to take their jobs.
In a 1930 essay, British economist John Maynard Keynes predicted that the US could “look forward to an age of leisure and abundance without fear”. That vision has clearly not materialized. As AI boosts workplace productivity, will we use the extra time to enjoy our lives, or will we continue to overload our schedules in pursuit of status and self-worth?
12. What marks high status in the US at present?
A. Controlling work hours autonomously.
B. Going on extended vacations regularly.
C. Having a well-balanced work-life style.
D. Working long hours with little free time.
13. Why does the author mention the book The Theory of the Leisure Class?
A. To indicate the development of society.
B. To lead readers to reflect the significance of work.
C. To prove wealth is little related to long work hours.
D. To persuade people to change their opinion of status.
14. What is a key reason for the shift in how work hours relate to status?
A. The change of economic form.
B The widespread availability of AI.
C. The decline of traditional industries.
D. The rising value of seizing more wealth.
15. What can be inferred about highly paid professionals?
A. They hardly experience job competition.
B. They feel pressured to keep their positions.
C. They are more insecure than others in finance.
D. They believe success means long work hours.

Like many other sports tennis is a very old game. Historians think that the ancient Egyptians, Greeks, and Romans played a game similar to tennis thousands of years ago.
Lawn tennis used to be played on neatly manicured (修剪) lawns. ____16____ Today, the only major tournament played on grass is the All-England championships at Wimbledon.
As we know, a tennis court is a rectangular area 78 feet long and 36 feet wide. At each end of the playing area is a baseline. ____17____ The area between the two sidelines is called the alley. In the middle of the court is a three-foot-high net. On each side of the net are two service courts.
Other than a court, all you need to play tennis are a racquet, some tennis balls, and one or three other people, depending on which game you play. ____18____ When four people play, it is called doubles. The players rally, or hit the ball back and forth over the net. The ball cannot bounce more than once before a player has to hit it back over the net.
You score a point when your opponent hits the ball outside the lines or fails to return the ball over the net on the first bounce. The first player to score four points wins a game. After you have won six games, you’ve won a set. ____19____
Like other sports, you need to practice in order to become a good tennis player. ____20____ Who knows, someday you may be good enough to play at Wimbledon!
A. Several sets make up a match.
B. Tennis is about serving and returning.
C. The more you practice, the better you’ ll get.

Jana Benally grew to be five feet eleven inches and a star on her high school volleyball team. She spiked(大力扣), blocked, and picked up impossible smashes(扣球)from the other team before they hit the floor. Her team members trusted her skills and depended upon her honesty.
But Jana hadn’t always been completely honest.. When she was in fifth grade, her friends and she had a huge social studies assignment. They divided up the parts and copied from each other. Then her teacher found three of their notebooks in one desk, all with the same answers. The teacher called in the girls and their parents for a talk. When Jana and her parents went to see her teacher, Jana burst into tears and admitted her mistake. From then on, she promised that she would never cheat again or lie.
And she didn’t, even under great pressure. When she was at San Juan High School, her team played Morgan High School in the state volleyball championship. The game was tight. Morgan would score, and then San Juan would score.
Near the end of the game, the score was 12 to 14, with Morgan ahead. Morgan only needed one more point to win the state championship. Morgan served to San Juan, and Jana’s team passed the ball to the center. Jana set it up and spiked it down hard on Morgan’s side of the net. A Morgan player dove for the ball and dug it up from the back row. The Morgan setter went underneath it and set the ball up to the hitter, who spiked it to San Juan. Jana blocked the ball and it smashed down, inbounds, on Morgan’s side.
The referee(裁判). blew his whistle(哨子)and gave one point to San Juan. Jana knew that her team could tie the game and maybe even win. But there was just one problem. As Jana had blocked the spike from Morgan, she had felt the underside of her arm brush the net. The referee hadn’t seen it. Nobody knew but Jana.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Jana hesitated for a moment about whether to tell the referee about her mistake.

B Passengers of the yacht were all arrested.
【答案】4. D 5. A 6. C 7. A

【答案】8. A 9. B 10. D 11. C

B. The widespread availability of AI.

Last Friday, our school held a cultural exchange activity with the theme of “Entering the Spring Festival and Appreciating the Charm of the Intangible Cultural Heritage”. The purpose of this activity was to help foreign exchange students have a deeper understanding of the Spring Festival, one of China’s intangible cultural heritages.
During the activity, we had various interesting and meaningful programs. We learned how to write Spring Festival couplets and make paper-cuttings. Some students even tried their hand at making traditional Chinese dumplings. We also watched some wonderful performances related to the Spring Festival.

The final whistle blew, and the gym erupted in cheers — for Morgan.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Jana hesitated for a moment about whether to tell the referee about her mistake. She knew that revealing the truth might cost her team the precious opportunity to tie the game or even snatch the championship. However, the promise she had made years ago when she cheated in fifth grade resonated loudly in her mind. With a deep breath and a determined look in her eyes, Jana mustered up the courage and walked up to the referee. In a shaky but clear voice, she admitted that she had touched the net. The referee, looking both surprised and impressed, reversed the point, and now Morgan was just one point away from claiming victory.
The final whistle blew, and the gym erupted in cheers — for Morgan. Jana’s teammates stared at her in disbelief and disappointment at first. But when she explained what had happened and why she had made that decision, understanding dawned on their faces. Jana felt a weight lifted off her shoulders. Even though her team lost the game, she knew she had done the right thing. Her integrity and commitment to honesty were more valuable than any championship.
