B As I lay in bed, my four-year-old daughter, Shawn, asked over and over again, “Daddy, please take me to AstroWorld. Can you? Will you?” I didn’t want to go to the amusement park, but what was I going to say, especially when I looked into my daughter’s big, brown eyes? It was made even more difficult by the fact that I was disabled (有残疾的), having been shot in the head as an innocent (无辜的) bystander in an accident. Plus, we were in the middle of a hot Houston summer. But I continued to stare into Shawn’s big eyes, asking me, her father, to take her to AstroWorld. In the end, I gave in. We stood in line for the first ride, inching our way up for forty-five minutes until we finally got to the front. Shawn climbed onto the ride first, her excitement building, followed by me climbing in awkwardly to sit down next to her. The ride attendant approached us, buckled (系安全带) us in, and said, “Sir, I could tell by the way you walked that you have some problems with your body. We at AstroWorld have two policies for disabled guests: They get to go to the front of the line and they get to ride twice.” With these words, the attendant finished buckling us in and walked away to help another group of riders. I did not think much of the woman’s comments. However, my daughter looked up at me, smiled from ear to ear, and yelled with excitement, “DADDY THANK GOD YOU WERE SHOT!” At first, I sat there, shocked. However, I quickly realized that my young daughter was teaching me something very valuable that day: With everything that is bad, there has to be some good. Shawn was teaching me to always look for the silver lining in our life. 4. What was the author’s initial response to his daughter’s request? A. He was kind of hesitant. B. He refused immediately. C. He thought little of it. D. He was excited to go. 5. What special treatment could the author get at AstroWorld? A. Receiving a ticket free of charge. B. Jumping the line to play. C. Gaining a good gift. D. Riding with a guide. 6. What did the daughter think of the author’s disability? A. She regarded it as stress. B. She was sorry for him. C. She considered it a fortunate thing. D. She felt awkward because of it. 7. How did the daughter’s comment affect the author? A. It made him feel much sadder. B. It encouraged him to be more patient. C. It taught him to learn to appreciate life. D. It helped him to recover his confidence. C We know quality sleep is good for our overall health, and there are many studies about it, but does it have something to do with other aspects, like brain health? Now scientists carried out a study with the aim of finding that. In the study, published Wednesday in online journal Neurology, researchers found people with poor sleep quality have more signs of poor brain health in late middle age. Of the 589 participants (参与者), those who reported two to three poor sleep characteristics had an average brain age that was 1.6 years older than those with no more than one poor sleep characteristic. And those with more than three poor sleep characteristics had an average brain age that was 2.6 years older. Participants, who had an average age of forty at the start of the study, completed sleep questionnaires about six sleep characteristics. Five years later, they completed the same survey. Then, fifteen years after the study began, researchers examined participants’ brain scans where the level of brain shrinkage (萎缩) matched a specific age. Of the sleep characteristics, bad sleep quality, difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep and early morning awakening were linked to greater brain age, especially when people consistently had these poor sleep characteristics over five years. Some experts say the participants only reported their own sleep problems in the experiment, which could include mistakes. “While the study does not prove the cause-effect relationship, it shows a connection between poor sleep quality and signs of brain aging. That’s important in furthering our understanding of the importance of sleep.” Dr. Fouzia Siddiqui, a medical director, who was not part of the study, said. “These findings show how important sleep is for our brains, especially as we get older. Getting enough good sleep can help keep our minds sharp and improve our overall health,” said Dr. Shelby Harris, a clinical psychologist who was not part of the study. He says fast brain aging is associated with cognitive decline, memory problems and an increased risk of neurodegenerative diseases, including dementia. “When the brain ages before a normal time, it can bring some pitfalls in daily functioning and mental clarity, significantly impacting the quality of life,” she said. “Understanding these risks emphasizes the importance of prioritizing sleep as part of a healthy lifestyle. Luckily, there are many things you can do to address many problems related to being short of sleep.” 8. Why did the scientists carry out the study? A. To show the effect aging has on sleep quality. B. To present the best ways to improve sleep quality. C. To find the reason why quality sleep is good for health. D. To uncover the relationship between sleep and brain health. 9. What can we know about the study? A. It consisted of more than one stage. B. It proved that poor sleep causes brain aging. C. It focused on the sleep situation in various age groups. D. It suggested that some sleep characteristics are more influential. 10. What does Dr. Fouzia Siddiqui think of the study? A. Fruitless. B. Valuable. C. Meaningless. D. Pioneering. 11. What does the underlined word “pitfalls” in the last paragraph probably mean? A. Solutions. B. Opportunities. C. Difficulties. D. Improvements. D When Cirkel watched his son’s soccer team play, he found the kids lay in the shade after the game. They’d put their feet in the air and cry, “Our feet are burning!” Their games had been played on artificial turf (人工草皮). This heat-trapping plastic can get so hot that it burns. Now a new water-storage system that Cirkel’s research team has just developed works to avoid that problem. His team’s new system collects and stores rainwater about 8.5 centimeters below a playing field. Eventually, that water will evaporate (蒸发). As it does, it will cool the playing surface. It’s like the way sweating works. There, the released moisture (水分) from the body carries heat away from our skin. Fields of artificial turf are built of layers, like a sandwich. The artificial grass sits on top. Some filler material, often made of rubber (橡胶), lies below that. In Cirkel’s team’s experiment, they added a rainwater-storage area below the filler and a waterproof (防水的) liner under that. The team also replaced the usual rubber with a fiber filler. They hoped — but wasn’t sure — the water would move up the layers to evaporate at the surface. So they were “pleasantly surprised that such a huge amount of water was evaporating,” recalls Marjolein van Huijgevoort. She’s another researcher on the team. For their outdoor tests, the researchers created four small fields in the city of Amsterdam. Each was five meters on a side. Two fields topped the new rainwater-cooled system with artificial turf. One field had real grass planted on top of that system. The last field used standard artificial turf with no water storage below. The new artificial-grass system did a good job in storing rainwater and preventing runoff. It stored up to six times as much rainwater as typical artificial turf. This water would later evaporate to cool the surface. “If many urban fields were covered with such a system, they might help limit a city’s warming from what’s known as the heat-island effect,” says Cirkel. “The rainwater-cooled system was a big improvement over today’s artificial turf. And in the outdoor tests, rain fell often enough to supply all the water the system needed. But in hotter, drier cities, the system may need watering, as real grass does.” 12. What problem did Cirkel’s son’s team face when playing? A. The weather was not pleasant. B. The artificial grass was too uneven. C. There was little shade for them to relax in. D. The artificial turf made them extremely hot. 13. Why is sweating mentioned in paragraph 2? A. To tell how the human body cools itself. B. To explain the principle of the new system. C. To stress the importance of the water-storage system. D. To compare the performance of different cooling methods. 14. What does the text say about Cirkel’ s experiment? A. The four fields in the experiment had artificial turf on top, B. It proved the new system could replace natural grass one day. C. The new system stored as much rainwater as real grass. D. The system’s effectiveness was satisfactory. 15. What’s the main idea of the text? A A new system developed to cool artificial turf. B. A method to effectively manage artificial turf. C. A new technology to make playing soccer easy. D. The comparison between natural grass and artificial turf. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Fast fashion is having bad effects on the environment. The latest must-have item? Superhero-style jerseys (球衣), decorated with bright colors and the logos of everyone’s favorite heroes. They were cool and expensive. Almost everyone pre-ordered one, except Dylan. Dylan lived with his grandmother, Mrs. Hargrove, in a small house. Money was tight, but they made do. When Dylan saw the jerseys at school, he couldn’t help but want one. Mrs. Hargrove looked at the price tag online and said gently, “I’m afraid we can’t afford one right now.” Dylan’s face fell, but he forced a smile, “That’s okay, Grandma. I understand.” But Mrs. Hargrove couldn’t bear to see him disappointed. That night, after Dylan had gone to bed, she sat down with her knitting needles (针) and a plan. She stayed up all night and made a homemade jersey with all the love she had. By morning, she was tired but satisfied, holding the finished product with a smile. At breakfast, she presented the jersey to Dylan. Dylan’s heart sank when he saw the jersey. It was a bright, hand-knitted sweater with a superhero picture that wasn’t exactly perfect. But he saw the look in his grandmother’s eyes and knew he couldn’t hurt her feelings. “Thanks, Grandma,” he said, forcing enthusiasm into his voice. “It’s great.” On Monday, Dylan put on the homemade jersey and went to school. As soon as he entered the classroom, some kids started to laugh at him. Dylan tried to ignore them, but the comments kept coming. By lunchtime, he couldn’t take it anymore and ran home, tears streaming down his face. Mrs. Hargrove held him close, her heart broken for him. I’m writing this letter to tell you that I’m free this weekend and would like to show you around. In the morning, we’ll begin our journey at the history museum, where we can learn about the city’s history and culture. Following that, we’ll head to a local park famous for its unique natural scenery. We can go to Laocai Ji to have its specialties for lunch. In the afternoon, we’ll wander around the ancient street, trying various local snacks. What’s more, there is a traditional handicraft workshop on the street. We can join in a hands-on pottery-making activity there. Looking forward to your reply. Yours, Li Hua 第二节(满分25分) 【47题答案】 【答案】Mr. Pickford decided to take action. He organized a special class activity called “The Value Behind Clothes”. In the class, he asked each student to share the story behind a special piece of clothing they owned. Some talked about the dresses their mothers made for their birthdays, while others shared the significance of the worn-out items passed down from their grandparents. Mr. Pickford then asked Dylan to come to the front and show his jersey. In a trembling voice, Dylan told the whole class how his grandma had stayed up all night to make this jersey for him because they couldn’t afford the expensive store-bought ones. His words touched the hearts of his classmates, and many of them hung their heads in shame for their earlier behavior. After the class, the students’ attitudes changed completely. They started to appreciate the effort and love put into every piece of clothing, no matter how it looked. Some students even asked Mrs. Hargrove to teach them how to knit. The next week, a “Handmade Clothes Day” was organized in the school. All the students wore their self-made or family-made clothes with pride. Dylan’s jersey became the most special one among them. From then on, instead of being laughed at, Dylan was admired for having such a loving grandmother and the unique jersey filled with love. The school atmosphere became warmer, and everyone learned the true meaning of kindness and respect. 1—5 BBACA 6—10 ABCCA 11—15 ABCBC 16—20 BCABC 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
